BP MARKOWITZ CELEBRATES GRAND RE-OPENING OF RED HOOK’S FAIRWAY SUPERMARKET

March 14, 2013 By David Katzmire Leave a Comment

On Friday, March 1, Brooklyn Borough President Marty Markowitz joined Mayor Bloomberg, Senator Charles Schumer, Miss America 2013 Mallory Hagan, Fairway executives, other elected officials and community members for the grand re-opening of Fairway in Red Hook, which had been closed since sustaining damage from Superstorm Sandy. “Fairway Market is more than just a store; it is the quintessential grocery experience with something for everyone—from our foodies and artisan advocates to even Brooklyn’s own Miss America, Mallory Hagan” said BP Markowitz. “Since Hurricane Sandy, Fairway’s absence in Red Hook left Brooklynites with an emptiness in their daily routines—and their refrigerators. I can personally attest that no week was quite the same without my wife and I taking our … [Continue reading...]

BP MARKOWITZ STATEMENT ON PASSING OF BROOKLYN NATIVE AND FORMER U.S. SURGEON GENERAL C. EVERETT KOOP

February 27, 2013 By David Katzmire Leave a Comment

“C. Everett Koop was an extraordinary leader who transformed the office of U.S. Surgeon General by putting aside his conservative personal beliefs in the name of public health—changing the way our nation confronted some of its most pressing and controversial issues, from smoking and condom use to HIV/AIDS. It really should come as no surprise that long before Dr. Koop was a powerful player in Washington he was just a kid from South Brooklyn who enjoyed stickball and sandlot baseball and played in Prospect Park. No doubt it was those ‘street smarts’ and Brooklyn attitude that served him so well in his capacity as Surgeon General. Dr. Koop lived a long and amazing life, and it’s because of his legacy that all of us have a chance to live one as well. Brooklyn joins a grateful … [Continue reading...]

BP MARKOWITZ HAILS ANNOUNCEMENT THAT WALGREENS, KEY FOOD WILL OPEN FULL SERVICE GROCERY STORE IN WINDSOR TERRACE

February 25, 2013 By David Katzmire Leave a Comment

“I couldn’t be more thrilled that Walgreens and Key Food are teaming up to ensure that Windsor Terrace residents, who were organized by leaders like Ryan Lynch, Lauren Collins and Chris Huntington, will have everything from A to Z—from aspirin to zucchini. When the community works together with retailers, my office and elected officials such as Councilman Brad Lander and Assemblyman Jim Brennan, the result is a comprehensive, efficient and organized solution that prevents Windsor Terrace from becoming a food desert and instead guarantees a one-stop shopping solution. As someone who lives in Windsor Terrace, I know just how important it is for this location to provide access to fresh, affordable food. Walgreens clearly has its fingers on the pulse of the community, and this … [Continue reading...]

BP MARKOWITZ STATEMENT ON HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES INACTION ON HURRICANE SANDY RELIEF BILL

January 3, 2013 By David Katzmire Leave a Comment

“Thousands of families—not just in our beloved Brooklyn but across New York City, Long Island, New Jersey and beyond—are struggling: homes have been destroyed, businesses shuttered and lives permanently changed. After Hurricane Katrina, it took barely a week for Congress to pass a relief bill offering immediate assistance. But now, months after Hurricane Sandy, Congressional Republicans ‘led’ by Speaker Boehner have chosen to play politics instead of helping storm victims. The Speaker should know that America begins with New York. We are a national city, essential not only to the identity of this nation but also to its survival, paying a lot more in tax dollars than we get back. However, in our time of need, when all we have asked for is our fair share, the Speaker and House … [Continue reading...]
