Europe’s Renewable Energy Grid

May 22, 2012 By David Katzmire Leave a Comment

FROM THE EDITOR Dear Friends, Lately, each week seems to be bookended by signs of hope and despair. The crowdfunding phenomenon has lots of potential and shows a wonderful side of humanity - Imagine being able to invest in solar or small wind in your community and get an income stream from it? Also exciting is the idea of a pan-European Super Grid, connecting renewable energy across the continent - geothermal from Iceland, wind and wave energy from Northern Europe, and solar from the south and northern Africa. Yes, there's also despair, as it becomes ever-clearer how much resistance there is to transitioning to a low carbon economy. Over the past months, sources of climate denial have become clear, whether it's from obnoxious billboards, outright attempts to prevent clean fuel standards … [Continue reading...]

May 4, 2012 By David Katzmire Leave a Comment

WITH AWARD-WINNING DESIGN BY WEISS/MANFREDI Brooklyn Botanic Garden (BBG) is pleased to announce that on May 16, 2012, it will open its new Visitor Center, a key component of the most significant renewal effort at the Garden since its founding over a century ago. Designed by the innovative New York–based firm Weiss/Manfredi, the project was recognized by the New York City Public Design Commission with a 2008 Award for Excellence in Design. Grandparents Oppose Tar Sands

April 23, 2012 By David Katzmire Leave a Comment

Alberta tar sands are estimated to be 240 GtC (gigatons of carbon); see Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (2007) Working Group 3 report.  That is about seven times greater than the cumulative historical CO2 emissions from oil use by the U.S. (36 GtC).  U.S. oil use was 28% of global oil use for the cumulative amounts over the past 200 years.  So Alberta tar sands contain about twice the total amount of carbon emitted by global oil use in history. Yet some people argue that tar sands are not so great that we need to be concerned about their effect on climate.  They argue that only about 40 GtC of the tar sands are presently economically extractable.  However, if an addiction to tar sands is established, as it would be with big pipelines, you can be confident that the addiction … [Continue reading...]
