I just returned from Los Angeles, where my mother posthumously received the Arthur Ashe Courage Award at the ESPYS. What an incredible night! My parents are deceased but continue to inspire me and countless others each and every day. Seeing the video tribute to my mom, hearing the Special Olympics athletes tell the world that she gave them hope, a place to belong, a reason to live and that they themselves are agents of change....wow!
I was most touched by an old video of mom saying that “it’s welcome, inclusion, love…that’s what built our country.” Those words hit home and I think are a good reminder, and a good challenge, to us all.

The Willis-Ekbom Disease (WED) Foundation and XenoPort, Inc. (Nasdaq: XNPT) announced today the preliminary results from the “Patient Odyssey” survey, which reveal the challenges experienced by patients with Restless Legs Syndrome/Willis-Ekbom Disease (RLS/WED). The survey kicked off during this year’s National RLS/WED Awareness Week, and examined treatment, lifestyle and emotional burden on both RLS/WED patients and their spouses/partners. Results regarding treatment burden are now available on the WED Foundation website (www.Willis-Ekbom.org); results regarding lifestyle and emotional burden, including spouse/partner responses, will be released in 2014.

Our second meeting, held October 8, was very exciting! We presented our members’ checks, totaling $3,700, to the Theresa Academy of Performing Arts Founder and President – Susan Russo and her husband Vincent.

She recalled her daughter, Theresa’s short life and the impact it had on her family
Why they formed the Academy - to touch the lives of special needs children through workshops and programs of enrichment support
