Civil Society Leaders Call on United Nations:
Declare a GLOBAL PEACE DAY!

NEW YORK. Leading peace advocates, diplomats, educators and artists gather online Tuesday, September 20 to insist that the United Nations make Global Peace Education Day an annual United Nations event. The conference spotlighted the success of peace education in transforming lives of individuals and communities around the world, even in the face of the war, pandemic and climate change. Last year more than 1,500 people attended from 86 countries.

The Global Peace Education Network, year-old global collaboration, is taking grassroots action to share skills, know-how, and best practices to achieve the United Nations Sustainable Development goals. It includes the Global Movement for the Culture of Peace, Fundación Cultura de Paz, Spanish Federation of UNESCO Associations and Clubs, Malaga Club of UNESCO, International Institute for Peace Education, Global Campaign for Peace Education, Institute for Economics and Peace, Pathways to Peace, IONS, The Prem Rawat Foundation, the National Peace Academy, Unity Foundation, PeaceChannel.com and a growing number of others. The Global Peace Education Network promotes cooperation, resource sharing and information exchange about peace education strategies, structures and curricula.

Gabriela Ramos, UNESCO Assistant Director General for Human and Social Sciences will chair the event. “The search for peace may be as old as humanity itself,” she says. “Peace cannot be secured through economic and political cooperation alone. But it must be nurtured through the everyday elevation of the knowledge, skills, values, and attitudes needed to understand, appreciate and cooperate across differences.” She continues, “We learn war, and we learn peace. If viruses can learn and spread, then we can learn and spread peace.”

Screen actor Michael Nouri will host the Global Peace Education Day event. “If we prepared for peace the way we prepare for war, we wouldn’t be in this mess,” he said. “That’s why I’m an ambassador for Seeds of Peace, preparing young leaders around the globe to be ready for peace with training, skills, knowledge and experience to build a peaceful world.”
“I was honored to be the inaugural speaker for a Global Peace Education Day” says Ambassador Anwarul Chowdhury, former UN Undersecretary General. “As human beings we must empower ourselves to contribute more effectively to bring inner as well as outer peace. This realization has now become more important, especially for women, youth and children, in the midst of the ever-increasing military expansion that is destroying both our planet and our people.” The ambassador has served the United Nations as UN Under-Secretary-General, president of the UN Security Council, the UNICEF board, and high representative of the UN, advocating for the most vulnerable countries of the world.

“For me, to assemble a global network of peace educators is very important, because it allows us to establish a culture of peace,” said Tunisia’s Nobel Peace Prize recipient Ouided Bouchamaoui. “Peace Education must be widely accepted by all nations, societies, and cultures. They require the abilities and knowledge to foster peace.”

“A United Nations Global Peace Education Day will provide a transition from a culture of imposition, domination and war to a culture of encounter, conciliation, dialog, alliance & Peace,” said former UNESCO Director General Frederico Mayor Zaragoza. “We need educators who can educate in a culture of peace and non-violence. We know that our earth faces an irreversible threat but now we the people will act to prevent all this by implementing the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals.”

Global Peace Education Day speaker Kehkashan Basu was only 12 years old when she founded the global Green Hope Foundation to educate her peers about the Sustainable Development Goals. She is a Climate Reality Mentor, former Global Coordinator for Children and Youth, UNEP MGFC, and a UN Human Rights Champion. “The way we facilitate peace education is to empower women in underserved communities to drive change. We’ve just opened a sewing school where women and girls make masks, clothes, bags and sell these products to earn their livelihood.

“We no longer understand the simple need to be kind. Even in environments that should be full of love, full of encouragement, full of understanding, you find that people are fighting,” said keynote speaker Prem Rawat, founder of the Peace Education Program which partners with governments, NGOs and volunteers in more than 70 countries. “On the other hand, you have a Peace Education Program in India’s Telengana State that closed down five prisons! The people that were released did not come back. This is what the Peace Education Program has done.”

I am Mojima Etokudo from Akwa Ibom State in southern Nigeria, West Africa. I came in contact with May Peace Prevail on Earth International then World Peace Prayer Society in 1995 at the age of 19 during my short course on music at the National Theological Academy Ukanafun in Akwa Ibom State as a circular musician. I became Interested about the philosophy of the organization which centered on peaceful coexistence with all race and I applied for membership through regular mail.

In 1996, one of my musical album with the title “Give Them Right” was dedicated to the World Peace Prayer Society.

I was involved in various activities geared towards the promotion of the universal Prayer for world Peace “MAY PEACE PREVAIL ON EARTH” I also engaged students in our local schools and youths in our community on peace club, raising the consciousness of Peace on young people on the need for peace among their fellow human being and all life on Earth.

I 2001, I was recognized as the official Nigeria Peace Representative for the World Peace Prayer Society now May Peace Prevail on Earth International.

In 2002, I was privilege to participate at the All African Peace Representative Conference in Accra, Ghana, in this conference, the international president of May Peace Prevail on Earth International Mr Hiroo Saionji, the then Executive Director Rev Deborah Moldow, the Germany Representative Mr Patrick Petit, the Minister of Finance in Ghana and many others across the world.

It was a great privilege to meet other Peace Representative and Peace Enthusiasts at the conference.

In 2003, we organized our first United Nations International Day of Peace Celebration in Nigeria at Ukanafun Local Government Council Hall which has in attendance, Religious leaders, Legislators and other Political leaders, Traditional Rulers School Children and the media. Peace Pole was planted in front of the Ukanafun Local Government council Secretariat and other leaders in attendance receives it Desktop Peace Poles.

Since then, we have been celebrating yearly the UN International Day of Peace across Nigeria and many Peace Poles planted in schools, private homes, please of worship, Palaces of some Kings in the area and over 1000 Desktop Peace Pole to many in Nigeria and the Palestine during my trips to Israel and the Palestine.

When I recalled my pains as an orphan who lost both parents at the age of 8 and 14 years old without government scholarship to go to school and Family feeding support, I think of the downtrodden in the society and mostly the hinterland, we build in as part of our UN International Day of Peace activities to raised funds to trained the vunrable on Free Skill acquisition which we have successfully trained 50 young people on various trades and equipped some based on our available resources.

More would have been done but no sponsorship from the government of Nigeria and I hope we will have their support in the future so we can do more for humanity.

I pray for international support and locally to do more for humanity.

PLANS FOR 2022 UN INTERNATIONAL DAY OF PEACE IN NIGERIA:

Our plans for this year’s UN International Day of Peace is in top gear as we plan for a week long event that will climax on September 21, 2022. Our planned activities include the following to compliment the theme of the 2022 UNIDP : “END RACISM, BUILD PEACE’.

1. We will visit Traditional Rulers in various county/ State council as much as our resources can go, and sensitize them on the need to live in harmony.

2. Same with some political leaders
3. Same with Religious leaders
4. Same with Media houses
5. Same with School children and Teachers etc.

Then on September 21, we hope to gather at Uyo the Akwa Ibom State Headquarters for the grand finale at a ceremony that hopes to bring leaders and students together for a public lecture on the theme “END RACISM, BUILD PEACE” . Desktop Peace Poles will be awarded to leaders at many levels and World Peace Ceremony where Flags of all Nations will be raise for Prayers and lot more. Pray for resources to implement all these lofty plans.

In 1985, The leading Chinese Media asked Paul to assist them and he started a full service multi-cultural marketing and advertising company for all communities called Milestone Broadcast Corporation (MBC) of which MBC still focuses on. in 1998 he created www.goodnewsbroadcast.com & www.goodnewsplanet.TV sharing the Good News of the world and have over 5,000 shows and growing.
Paul founded nonprofit Good News Corporation (GNC), in 2002 and has been involved with humanitarian projects including their Central Park and Times Square world broadcast for the International Day of Peace, www.peacedayparty.org held every year on September 21 for over 20 years. As representatives of the Asian, Black and Hispanic communities, we stand together against all acts of racism and violence and stand against those who would divide us and sow mistrust and fear.

We mourn the deaths of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor and Ahmaud Arbery, and call for swift and sure justice to prevail.

We embrace the fact that the United States is a multiracial, multiethnic nation, and affirm our commitment and responsibility to advance the many elements that unite us: a belief in the value of diversity, the contributions of immigrants and the power of multi-cultural collaborations.

We believe that taking action is as important as expressions of support, and will soon be announcing a groundbreaking effort to provide long-term support for Black, Latinx and Asian small businesses impacted by Covid-19. We are also preparing a webinar that will bring together journalists from our communities to have an open discussion about how race relations are being reported, and how the media can influence a change in perspectives. These efforts are just a beginning.

Today, we reaffirm our solidarity with diverse leaders and institutions all across our nation and pledge to fight to turn the tide against racism everywhere.

Mildred C. Crump, president Newark Municipal Council; Hazel N. Dukes, president New York State Conference, NAACP; and Rev. Calvin McKinney, general secretary National Baptist Convention, USA on Wednesday, January 1, 2020, from 2 pm-6pm ET in the Grand Ballroom at The Robert Treat Hotel in Newark, NJ.

The awards banquet purposely takes place on New Year’s Day, an important date in American history, especially for African Americans. On New Year’s Day, January 1, 1863, President Abraham Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation declaring slaves within the rebellious states free. The Great American Emancipation Day Awards Banquet is sponsored by The City of Newark Mayor Ras J. Baraka, Prudential Financial, AARP, McDonald’s, PSEG, RWBarnabas Health, Two Fish and Five Loaves and Berkeley College.

“January 1 is a date of deep meaning to African Americans,” says Adrian A. Council, co-founder and publisher of The Positive Community. “It is our day of liberation, the start of our freedom journey. Without this day there would be no Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., no Motown, no Juneteenth, no Godfather of Soul no Queen of Soul.”

Joining the three honorees will be organization honorees: African American Chamber of Commerce of New Jersey, John Harmon, president; African-American Clergy and Elected Officials (AACEO Brooklyn), Rev. Robert Waterman, president; and Friends of Harlem Hospital, Rev. Jacques A. DeGraff, president.

The vision of TPC co-founders Council and Editor-in- Chief Jean Nash Wells was to create a balanced medium that accurately reflects the community building efforts of churches, small businesses, corporations, and concerned individuals.

“TPC was founded to keep our churches and communities informed,” says Wells. “Above all else, we value the progress of our children, and the integrity of African American culture, values, and traditions.”

Today, their vision is alive and well with TPC growing in circulation and influence and participating in and co-sponsoring church and community events that focus on health and financial literacy.

In 2012, TPC created and introduced The Cultural Narrative. Written to commemorate the 150th anniversary of the Great Emancipation, the document is an account of America’s freedom journey condensed into 281 words. On New Year’s Eve 2012, hundreds of churches participated in TPC’s Great Watch Night Initiative which involved singing the Negro National Anthem; having a young person read The Cultural Narrative before the congregation; and concluding with everyone exiting the sanctuary singing the Negro hymn We’ve Come This Far By Faith. What started as an initiative is now an established tradition among many churches and clergy groups.

As TPC observes its 20th year, the publication remains faithful to accurately reflecting the very best of the communities it serves. Like the pages of TPC, the Great American Emancipation Day Awards Banquet commemorates the best of black life and culture from fashion, music, and the arts to economic development and intellectual and cultural achievements. Enhancing the celebration will be a special New Year’s Day cuisine prepared by Rev. Kevin Smallwood, owner of Two Fish and Five Loaves.

Launched in 2000 by Adrian Council, Publisher and Jean Nash Wells, Co-Publisher and Editor-in-Chief, The Positive Community (TPC) is the only faith-based lifestyle magazine targeted to the African American consumer in the New York/New Jersey market.
