Good, quality sleep is integral for one’s physical and mental health, but for people with narcolepsy – this can be a challenge. Narcolepsy is a chronic neurological disorder that affects the brain’s ability to control sleep-wake cycles1 and often results in poor quality sleep.

Typically, during a 24-hour day, people have periods of sleep and periods of wakefulness but for people living with narcolepsy, periods of sleep are not consolidated – meaning they experience excessive sleepiness during the day and often have trouble sleeping at night – which results in them missing out on continuous, restorative sleep that often makes one feel refreshed.

A disrupted sleep cycle can mean a disrupted life. During the day, excessive daytime sleepiness can mean missing out on work, school, and time with family and friends. Because this condition is misunderstood, or mistaken for other conditions, those with narcolepsy often also experience delays in receiving a proper diagnosis and treatment.

For those who have been diagnosed, fortunately there are treatments available to help manage symptoms of excessive daytime sleepiness and cataplexy – two hallmark and disruptive symptoms of narcolepsy. People can also take an active role in managing their sleep-wake cycle by tracking their sleep patterns to help give them and their doctor a better picture of their days and nights to help spot trends and make changes accordingly.

Dr. Asim Roy, M.D. will help bring awareness to the impact of narcolepsy and offer insights on treatment options. He is joined by Katie who has narcolepsy and will share her experience with the condition and how it’s affected her life.

Two large asteroids are set to safely pass by Earth this week, arriving just before Asteroid Day on June 30, according to a new report from the European Space Agency (ESA).

Although neither poses any danger to our planet, one of the asteroids was discovered only a week ago, underscoring the importance of enhancing our ability to detect potentially hazardous objects in the vicinity of our planet.

Asteroid 2024 MK

Asteroid 2024 MK, measuring between 120 and 260 meters, was discovered on June 16, 2024. It will pass by Earth on Saturday, June 29.

This sizable near-Earth object (NEO) will come within 290,000 kilometers of Earth – approximately 75% of the distance to the moon.

Despite no risk of impact, the proximity of 2024 MK emphasizes the need for improved detection techniques.

“There is no risk of 2024 MK impacting Earth. However, an asteroid this size would cause considerable damage if it did, so its discovery just one week before it flies past our planet highlights the ongoing need to improve our ability to detect and monitor potentially hazardous near-Earth objects,” noted ESA.

Amateur astronomers can observe 2024 MK with a small telescope or good binoculars in clear, dark skies on June 29, using ESA’s NEO toolkit for guidance.

Asteroid 2011 UL21

Asteroid (415029) 2011 UL21, is 2,310 meters in diameter, which makes it larger than 99 percent of near-Earth asteroids.

However, 2011 UL21 will not come as close to Earth, passing at over 17 times the distance to the moon on Thursday, June 27.

This asteroid’s steeply inclined orbit around the sun is unusual for such a large object, possibly due to gravitational interactions with a planet like Jupiter. Understanding these interactions is crucial, as Jupiter can deflect asteroids towards Earth.

“2011 UL21 is in an ’11:34 resonance’ with Earth. It completes 11 revolutions about the sun in almost the exact same amount of time in which Earth completes 34 revolutions (i.e. 34 years),” explained ESA.

“The result is a pleasant repeating pattern when you visualize the asteroid’s location relative to Earth over a period of 34 years while keeping Earth fixed in place.”

Asteroid Day 2024

Asteroid Day commemorates the largest observed asteroid strike in recorded history – the 1908 Tunguska event in Siberia. This UN-endorsed day highlights the need for planetary defense.

ESA, with the cooperation of its member states, is uniquely positioned to coordinate data, information, and expertise to understand and respond to asteroid hazards, contributing to global planetary defense efforts.

ESA’s Planetary Defense Office is undertaking several projects to enhance the detection, tracking, and mitigation of hazardous asteroids.

Hera mission

The Hera mission, launching later this year, will perform a detailed survey of asteroid Dimorphos following NASA’s DART mission’s impact in September 2022, contributing to developing a repeatable planetary defense technique. The Hera team will participate in Asteroid Day celebrations.

Flyeye telescopes

ESA is also developing a network of Flyeye telescopes with a wide field of view to scan the sky nightly for new hazardous asteroids.

The future NEOMIR satellite, positioned between Earth and the sun, will use infrared light to detect asteroids obscured by the sun’s glare.

Planetary Defense Office

Meanwhile, ESA’s Planetary Defense Office continues to monitor the skies. ESA’s fireball camera in Cáceres, Spain, captured a meteor on the night of May 18-19, 2024.

Catalina Sky Survey

Additionally, the Catalina Sky Survey in Arizona discovered a small asteroid on June 6, 2024, triggering an alert from ESA’s imminent impact monitoring system.

The asteroid flew over the Catalina Sky Survey telescope at just 1,750 km, making it the second closest pass of a known, non-impacting asteroid ever.

More about near-Earth asteroids

Near-Earth asteroids (NEAs) are a category of asteroids with orbits that bring them close to Earth’s orbit. They are classified based on their orbits into three main groups: Atira, Amor, and Apollo asteroids. NEAs can vary significantly in size, from just a few meters to several kilometers in diameter.

They are remnants from the early solar system, providing clues about its formation and evolution. Due to their proximity to Earth, NEAs are of particular interest for scientific research, resource exploration, and planetary defense.

Understanding their composition and trajectories helps in developing potential strategies to mitigate any future impact threats. Advances in technology have allowed for missions to visit and study these asteroids up close, such as NASA’s OSIRIS-REx mission to Bennu and JAXA’s Hayabusa2 mission to Ryugu.

CHEN WANG’s, Journey to Love & Peace on Sunday, October 23, 2022, at 7:30pm to a full house at Zankel Hall at Carnegie Hall. This marked her New York Concert Debut which was met with great admiration and applause. The concert was sponsored by the Young Global Leadership Foundation with UN NGO ECOSOC Special Consultative Status, together with Michigan State University School of Music, Australian International Culture Industries Association, Global Stress Initiative, Global Corporate Social Responsibility Foundation, Global Wealth Elite Club, International Strategies Alliance & Good News Network, to name a few. The recital promoted awareness, advocacy & action for the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDG’s) & launched the recital tour that Wang is performing this year.

Wang performed Lizst’s Liebestraume and Chinese classics from the Tang Dynasty with great passion and brilliance. TONY and Award Winning Broadway Producer of “Passing Strange”, Regional Theater and Film , Vasi Laurence states:

“In difficult life moments, music can be a way to express who you are and Chen excels in that. Her playing is powerful and compelling and transports you on a very visceral level from deep reflection and calm to feeling joyful and exultant. Chen’s versatility and choice of music by Franz Liszt illustrates her ability to play some of the most technically difficult music that has ever been composed for piano…and the inclusion of music from the Tang Dynasty (which was the Golden Age of culture and the arts) was beautiful and exquisite. Chen is a fascinating and unique pianist who mesmerized the audience for ninety minutes. During intermission a patron turned to me and said, “She has magic fingers. She is magnificent.” I am sure that we will see and hear more of Chen Wang on the global concert stage. Congresswoman Grace Meng issued her a certificate of Outstanding and Invaluable Service to the Community.

A patron stated:
“The program Dr. Wang offered was important to note as it was at the top level in piano repertoire in terms of musicality and technical difficulty. The success of her performance can be attributed to Dr. Wang’s reputation as a promising and respected talent in piano performance. The extreme difficulty of the repertoire, which included Franz Liszt’s Soirées de Vienne, S.427, No. 6 (Valses caprices d’après Schubert), Three Petrach Sonnets from Années de pèlerinage, S.161, Second Year, and “La danza from Soirées musicales de Rossini, S. 424 gained the attention of music aficionados. Pianists must possess outstanding skills to execute the works of Liszt successfully. Dr. Wang met that challenge. Her extraordinary musical expression was truly effective in delivering the dramatic impact to the audience which warranted two standing ovations after the last piece finished.
Her musicianship was fine and profound, with strong and well controlled connections of all phrases. Her rare skills allow her to deliver music in ways others cannot and distinguishes her from other musicians.”
Chinese pianist Chen Wang began her piano studies at the age of five & was admitted to the middle school affiliated with Central Conservatory of Music in Beijing at the age of eleven. She continued her studies in the United States with famous pianists & educators including Deborah Moriarty, Panayis Lyras, Stephen Drury & William Heiles at the New England Conservatory, U niversity of Illinois at Urbana Champaign & Michigan State University. She holds a DMA in Piano Performance from Michigan State University.
In China, Chen was invited to be a spokesperson & guest pianist in the ninth World’s Children Call for Peace event in Beijing, together with over 100 institutions & children from more than 60 countries. In the US, Chen has given performances for the City of Boston, Omaha Summit at the 53 rd Warren Buffett Berkshire Hathaway Meeting & Massachusetts General Hospital. She received the Global Youth Leadership Award at the United Nations Headquarters Global Social Responsibility Summit in New York in 2018. This year, she gave solo piano performance at World First Metaverse Lantern Festival & North America Virtual Lunar New Year Gala. While working towards a double performance major in piano & percussion in the U.S. on a full scholarship, Chen discovered the interconnection between the two & developed her own performance style. Incorporating East Asian philosophy & western classical music, from Chinese poetry in the Tang Dynasty to Italian Renaissance literature, she explores the connections among nations, people & nature.

Chen Wang is Vice President of the Arts of Young Global Leadership Foundation (United Nations NGO ECOSOC Member), Vice Chairman & Guest Artist of Australian International Culture Industries Association & a member of expert committee of the China Association for Promoting Children’s Culture & Art. Chen is a multi-winner of several international piano competitions. She is a signed artist on Ivory Classics Music & ChinaWise USA.

INVOLUNTARY MOVEMENT DISORDER IMPACTS THOUSANDS OF AMERICANS

One in five U.S. adults live with a mental illness. Some people living with a mental health condition may also experience an involuntary movement disorder called tardive dyskinesia (TD). TD is a chronic condition, associated with taking certain mental health medicines (antipsychotics) to treat conditions like depression, bipolar disorder, schizoaffective disorder, or anxiety disorder. It is unlikely to improve without treatment.
Approximately 600,000 people in the U.S. may be affected by TD, yet only approximately 25% have been diagnosed. The condition is characterized by uncontrollable, abnormal, and repetitive movements often seen in the face, torso, limbs, and fingers or toes. It can impact patients socially, emotionally, and physically–these movements can cause worry, frustration, and self-consciousness. According to a survey of 350 patients with diagnosed or suspected TD, patients reported the condition moderately or extremely affected them in the following areas:

Ability to work: 46%

Ability to sleep: 53%

Ability to eat & drink: 35%

Despite the number of people impacted by the condition, many people are still unfamiliar with TD. However, for patients living with the condition, their families, and their care partners it’s important to know they’re not alone.

As of this year, 50 states and Washington, D.C. and various advocacy groups have recognized Tardive Dyskinesia Awareness Week as the first full week of May (May 1-7, 2022) to support people in the U.S. with TD. May is also Mental Health Awareness Month, and as efforts are underway to increase awareness and support for those impacted by mental health conditions, it’s important to remember those living with a mental illness and taking antipsychotics for a prolonged time may develop or already have TD.

Dr. Rakesh Jain, Clinical Professor Department of Psychiatry, Texas Tech University School of Medicine, Austin, TX, will be available to discuss the emotional, physical, and social impact of TD as well as talk about the condition’s signs and symptoms. Dr. Jain will also explain how critical TD Awareness Week is to those living with a mental health condition and TD.

Deb Fabricatore lost her younger brother to ALS in 2014, and became involved in ALS advocacy. Indu Navar lost her husband in 2019 and immediately stepped up into action by building a nonprofit devoted to honoring her husband. Both women and the members of the Everything ALS team have vowed to create a legacy of treatment and cure for their loved ones lost to ALS by building a non-profit determined to tackle the mission of Care to Cure for those diagnosed with ALS.

ALS also known as Lou Gehrig’s disease is a progressive, fatal neuro degenerative disease. It discriminates against no – one It can affect young, old, any race, age, background. It has no treatment and no cure. Those stricken with the disease lose their ability to move, talk, eat while their muscles whither away, causing paralysis and being trapped in their own bodies. Indu Navar and Deb Fabricatore are two of the co-founders of EverythingALS. There are many other dedicated team members including Austen Eadie-Friedman. Everything ALS is Navar’s brainchild a non-profit bringing technological innovations and data science to support efforts–from care to cure– for people with ALS, by offering an open data platform for direct engagement with patients, caregivers, researchers drug companies and using citizen driven research. Their non-profit has grown rapidly in their two short years of existence.

As patient advocates EverythingALS hosts bi-monthly community talks that are designed to provide patients and caregivers with the support and information that they will need throughout their ALS journey. They garner top tier speakers from research, medicine, technology and advocacy to present and answer questions as people watch and participate from their homes. This information and ability to communicate with such high-level experts from the comfort of their homes has been invaluable to the ALS community.

The Everything ALS team believe technology will be the key enabler for the innovation to end ALS. They support efforts to find a cure and or treatment for ALS by creating a platform for direct engagement with patients, researchers and cutting-edge Cloud and AI technologies.
The diverse team is composed of patient advocates, students, nurses, physicians, biologists, ALS patients. They are committed to helping provide information to those who are affected by ALS.

One example of an Everything ALS projects is the Speech Research Study, which is the development of speech analysis of audio and facial metrics for biomarkers for early detection and diagnosis, clinical endpoints and better voice recognition tools for ALS. As of now ALS has no test, or biomarker to assist in diagnosis. Everything ALS shares their data and works in collaboration with various research institutions such as, MIT, Mass General Harvard, UT Austin and Google to name a few. They are also supporting researchers by providing multi-omics analysis with machine learning and big data to uncover ALS causes, subtypes, pathways and drug targets.

EverythingALS continues to recruit participants for this Speech Study of control subjects (those with no ALS diagnosis) and those diagnosed with ALS. They believe citizen driven research will help solve the puzzle that will lead to treatment and cure of ALS. The study takes about 10 minutes per week on your computer, pad, or phone at any time that is convenient for the participant.
They ask people interested to go to www.EverythingALS.org/research or email Deb@EverythingALS, or call Deb directly at 908-420-4751.

Just as you may not run as fast or jump as high as you did as a teenager, your brain’s cognitive power—that is, your ability to learn, remember, and solve problems—slows down with age. You may find it harder to summon once familiar facts or divide your attention among two or more activities or sources of information. These changes affect your ability to focus, so you may find yourself getting more easily distracted than you were when you were younger.Hearing loss that often accompanies aging makes it more difficult to distinguish speech in a noisy environment. Because hearing then requires more concentration than usual, even mild loss of the ability to focus can affect speech comprehension.

Most people start to notice changes as they enter their 50s and 60s. Although these changes can cause consternation, most age-related memory and thinking problems don’t stem from an underlying brain disease such as Alzheimer’s disease. Instead, what appears to be a memory problem may simply reflect a slower processing speed and poor encoding and retrieval of new memories as a result of diminished attention. However, even though your brain may be slower to learn and recall new information, your ability to make sense of what you know and to form reasonable arguments and judgments remains intact.

Many of these limitations are reversible and related to poor sleep, but structural changes that take place in your brain as you age can explain some of these developments, too. Brain regions involved with memory processing, such as the hippocampus and especially the frontal lobes, undergo anatomical and neurochemical changes over time.

The result is that as you age, it takes longer to absorb, process, and remember new information. The natural loss of receptors and neurons that occurs with aging may also make it harder to concentrate. Therefore, you not only learn information more slowly, but you also may have more trouble recalling it because you didn’t fully learn it in the first place. With slower processing, facts held in working memory may dissipate before you have had a chance to solve a problem.

In addition, the ability to perform tasks that involve executive function declines with age. Many people learn to compensate for these changes by relying on habit most of the time and devoting extra effort to focus on new information they are trying to learn.

Even the aches and pains of getting older can affect focus. Pain itself is distracting, and some of the medications used to treat it also can affect concentration.
