NEW YORK, NY — Alina Bonsell, candidate for New York State Senate District 28, announced today that she will be running on an additional, independent ballot line named “Jewish Safety” alongside her Republican candidacy in the November 3, 2026, general election.

The announcement comes as independent petitioning will start April 14 through May 23, 2026, during which Bonsell’s campaign must collect 5,000 total signatures to ensure at least 3,000 qualified signatures from registered voters across the district.

New York State Senate District 28 spans Manhattan’s East Side, including East 14th Street through East 96th Street, Central Park South, and Roosevelt Island.

“The Jewish Safety line is about bringing people together across party lines around something fundamental: safety, identity, and shared values,” said Bonsell. “This is about building a coalition that reflects the reality of our community, not forcing people into political boxes.”

Bonsell previously ran for New York City Council in 2025, where she built a broad base of support across the district and demonstrated strong crossover appeal among Republicans, Independents, and Democrats alike.

The creation of the “Jewish Safety” line reflects that same coalition-building strategy, aimed at engaging voters who may not align with a single party but want leadership that prioritizes safety, stability, and common-sense solutions.

For Bonsell, the issue is deeply personal. “My family came to this country from the former Soviet Union because of antisemitism,” she said. “Jewish safety is not abstract to me, instead it’s part of my family’s history and part of why I’m running. No one in this city should feel unsafe because of who they are.”

“To move New York forward, we need leadership that is practical, not ideological,” Bonsell said. “People want safer streets, lower costs, and a government that actually works. That’s what I’m running to deliver for my neighbors.”

With a compressed petitioning timeline, the campaign is mobilizing aggressively to meet ballot requirements and is seeking to raise $20,000 to fund staffing and operations necessary to collect signatures across the district.

“This is a grassroots effort with a clear goal,” Bonsell added. “If we want real representation, it takes real participation. I’m asking people across our community to step in, sign, volunteer, and help us get this done.”

WE WIN TOGETHER

Alina is running on the Republican line this election, but her prospects for victory increases if voters can choose her on an Independent, “Jewish Safety” line, with all votes on both lines counting toward her total. This is about protecting the safety of all Jews in New York City and creating legislation that punishes those who commit religious crimes.

To make that possible, we need to hire staff and collect 5,000 registered voter signatures, so that at least 3,000 will be valid. These signatures need to be from any D28 registered voters who have not already signed any other petition.

Your support will directly fund trained petition staff and help ensure we qualify for the “Jewish Safety” Independent line on this November’s ballot.

We need to raise funds to get this done between April 14th – May 26th so we legally qualify our Independent line.

Alina
Bonsell
candidate for ny
state senate
Alina Bonsell is a Yorkville
resident, mother, and small
business owner, not a career
politician. In 1989, her family
immigrated to the United States
as Jewish refugees from the
Soviet Union when she was a
small child. She has spent her
life building businesses and
fighting to stay afloat in a city
that is increasingly hostile to the
people who make it run.
With 20 years of experience in
pharmaceutical operations and
private sector leadership,
including roles in regulatory
affairs, executive management,
and complex systems oversight,
Alina brings a track record of
accountability and measurable
results. She will bring that same
discipline to Albany.

Average U.S. gasoline prices hit $3.98 per gallon on Tuesday, according to AAA, on the cusp of a level that was last hit when Russia invaded Ukraine in 2022.

The last month has seen the second-largest gas price spike in three decades, with average prices climbing more than 30 percent since the war in Iran effectively shuttered the Strait of Hormuz, a narrow waterway that conveys up to a fifth of the world’s oil.

Though there’s no hard and fast rule that dictates exactly what choices consumers make at $4, $5, and $6 per gallon, higher gas prices are already stressing household budgets. At $4 per gallon, more than half of Americans said they’d change their driving behavior, according to a 2022 survey by AAA. More recent data has also shown that Americans are delaying some forms of spending.

The energy shock has hit Asia hardest: The Philippines declared a state of emergency on Tuesday, and President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. said grounding planes because of a jet fuel shortage was a “distinct possibility.” South Korea is urging citizens to ride bicycles instead of driving.

Transportation, of course, is the single-largest source of planet-warming greenhouse gas emissions in the United States, and a big contributor globally. Here’s what we know about how a long period of high gas prices could change how willing people are to drive gas-powered vehicles, both here and abroad.

Driving less, window-shopping

Already, Americans are looking for ways to cut back. In New Orleans, drivers are lining up at gas stations with the best prices. Michele Tafoya, a Republican candidate for the U.S. Senate in Minnesota, encouraged people to take “one less trip to Starbucks.” The state of Georgia has implemented a fuel tax holiday, waiving a 33-cent-per-gallon tax.

When gas prices spike, drivers tend to respond by cutting out unnecessary trips, by car-pooling and using public transportation, according to AAA. Spending on discretionary expenses like plane tickets and restaurant meals has fallen, too, as transportation costs eat up a bigger share of household budgets.

Yet while plenty of people who own electric vehicles have been boasting about their fuel savings on social media over the last few weeks, gas prices would have to stay high for a much longer period of time to trigger a broader shift away from gas-powered vehicles, according to Stephanie Valdez Streaty, research and development director at Cox Automotive, a research firm.

Still, the war in Iran appears to have driven a modest uptick in E.V. curiosity among U.S. drivers, according to the car shopping site Edmunds. If high prices persist, more people may feel the urge to hop off what Jessica Caldwell, the head of insights at Edmunds, called the “gas price roller coaster.”

New E.V.s in the U.S. are still more expensive than gas-powered cars, but the gap is closing for used vehicles. In February, the average listing price for a used E.V. was $34,821, about $1,300 more than a gas-powered car, Valdez Streaty said.

Hundreds of thousands more used E.V.s could enter the market this year as leases expire, Valdez Streaty said. “Consumers are going to have a lot of good options at a lower price point,” she said.

The global E.V. tipping point

If you’re curious about buying whether the economics of buying an E.V. are in your favor, The Times has a calculator that can help. The math looks very different abroad, where gas price shocks have been more intense and E.V.s are often far more affordable than in the U.S.

In a conversation as uplifting as his music, Randy Edelman graced the microphone of the Good News Podcast hosted by the brilliant Paul Sladkus — delivering an episode that feels like a breath of fresh inspiration.

Recorded with warmth, wit, and heartfelt insight, Randy shared stories from his remarkable career as a composer — from writing unforgettable themes for beloved films to the deeper personal reflections that shape his art. With each answer, he radiated the same generosity and joy that have made his music resonate across generations.

Paul guided the dialogue with thoughtful curiosity, creating space for Randy to open up about the power of creativity, the bridges between emotion and melody, and the moments that define a life in music. The conversation was candid yet poetic, inviting listeners into a rare glimpse of the man behind the scores.

Listeners will find themselves smiling, nodding, and ultimately walking away with something rare: true Good News — a reminder of how beauty, perseverance, and heartfelt expression can uplift the world.

Whether you’re a longtime fan or discovering Randy’s genius for the first time, this episode is an inspiring journey — one that echoes long after the final note.

Tune in, turn up the volume, and let the good news play on.

It follows a rotating, four-year cycle focused on EARTH, WIND, FIRE, and WATER, ensuring students explore a broad range of environmental systems and solutions over time.

The 2026 Challenge features EARTH, with students exploring issues such as soil health, tree canopy, composting, and food waste.
Since its launch, the Challenge has shown growing, measurable impact. In recent cycles, hundreds of student teams have progressed from ideas to formal project plans, with an increasing percentage advancing to implementation. Past winners have secured additional funding, expanded beyond their schools, and built long-term community partnerships, including teams in Atlanta and Houston continuing work well beyond the Challenge timeline. Across cohorts, student-led projects have tackled composting and food waste, erosion control and reforestation, water quality, repair-and-reuse systems, and circularity efforts reducing fast fashion and single-use waste.

Realscreen is honoring the late Dr. Jane Goodall during the Realscreen Awards ceremony set for February 3, during the 2026 Realscreen Summit.

The world-renowned ethologist, conservationist, founder of the Jane Goodall Institute and UN Messenger of Peace is being celebrated with the Realscreen Action Award, which recognizes individuals whose work within the unscripted and non-fiction content sector has inspired meaningful social impact and driven positive change in the industry and beyond. Last year’s recipient of the Action Award was acclaimed filmmaker Dawn Porter.

Dr. Goodall’s work in the field as a pre-eminent scientist and animal behavior expert, and as a global voice for community-centered conservation and biodiversity protection, has been the focal point of scores of documentary films and series, dating back to 1965’s Miss Goodall and the Wild Chimpanzees, narrated by Orson Welles for National Geographic, to Brett Morgen’s riveting 2017 documentary Jane, also for Nat Geo. Through Jane Goodall Productions, she and her team have been in production and development on many upcoming projects, including Matriarch, a collaboration with BBC Studios, PBS and the WNET Group. Her passing in October of this year led to an outpouring of love from around the world, spanning world leaders, noted celebrities and inspired citizens — all of whom have been touched by her legacy.

“Over the span of decades, Jane Goodall’s name has been synonymous with the ideas of conservation, care for the animal kingdom and curiosity, and her presence and creative leadership in more than 40 documentaries and films, reflecting the important work of the Jane Goodall Institute, has cemented that status,” said Barry Walsh, content director and editor-in-chief for Realscreen. “We are honored to celebrate her lifetime of contribution — not only to the world of wildlife documentary, but to our understanding of the world around us — with our Action Award.”

Accepting the award on Dr. Goodall’s behalf will be her longtime film collaborator and the Jane Goodall Institute’s wildlife cinematographer, Bill Wallauer.

Established in 2010, the Realscreen Awards, held annually during the Realscreen Summit, have become a benchmark for excellence in non-fiction and unscripted content, celebrating the most innovative and impactful work from around the globe.

Jane Turton, CEO of All3Media, will also be inducted into the Realscreen Hall of Fame, and will take part in a keynote conversation at the Summit, bringing her unique perspective on the evolving global content industry.

For more information on the Realscreen Summit, taking place from February 2-4 and once again co-locating with NATPE Global at Miami’s InterContinental Hotel, visit the official site here.

—Walter Isaacson

A heartfelt memoir about the search for religion and identity

“I’m not Jewish.” For years, that’s what David Weill told anyone who asked about his religious background. Yes, his father was a Jew who had left Nazi Germany as a boy. But his mother was a Southern Baptist. Growing up in New Orleans, religion wasn’t something his family discussed, let alone practiced. As an adult, he developed a fervent zeal and profound devotion to his work as a specialist in organ transplants. Transplantation was all he needed to define and fulfill him—until a crisis shook him to the core.

As a boy, Weill’s only experience with religion was when he accompanied Deborah, the family’s domestic help and his second mother figure, to her all-Black Baptist church. As a young doctor, he fell in love with Jackie, a nurse from rural Iowa and a devout Catholic. Much to the chagrin of her parents, they were married in a Dallas hotel rather than a church. After settling in Palo Alto, close to Stanford University Medical Center where Weill headed the heart and lung transplant program, their two daughters were baptized and confirmed at a local Catholic church. When his oldest daughter, Hannah, was around ten and asked him why he never joined them at mass on Sundays, he told her, “I’m not Catholic.” She looked at him, brow furrowed, and raised a question that would prove to haunt him, “What are you then?”

TELL ME I BELONG follows David Weill’s search for the answer. In 2015, after the simultaneous unraveling of his carefully crafted career and the death of his father, Weill began to doubt everything, including his purpose in life. While grappling with emotional pain and sinking deeper into despair, he began to suffer perplexing physical symptoms. In his moment of crisis, he was seized by a strong desire to practice a formal religion. But for Weill, the real question was, Which religion? Eventually, he chose Catholicism and was baptized at age fifty. He found solace in heart-to-heart talks with a priest and his daughters’ happiness at having the whole family at church together. Everything was fine—until 2020, when he learned that his mother had converted to Judaism right before marrying his father. He was born a Jew. And in the eyes of the Jewish faith, he would always be Jewish. That realization sparked his second quest. In an interview, David can talk about:

· What drew his mother, a native of Selma, Alabama, to Judaism—partly because, to quote her, Jews “always seemed like such practical people,” and largely as a rejection of Baptists who preached love for all God’s children and practiced racism.

· His father’s complicated sense of being Jewish, which he viewed as a source of pride for its association with smart and successful people while remaining wary of being ostracized or stigmatized for the religion he was born into.

· His determination, with the help of investigators, to learn more about his grandfather’s time imprisoned in the Buchenwald concentration camp, and the role of his famous relative, the composer Kurt Weill, in orchestrating his family’s escape to the United States.

· His heart-wrenching trip to Berlin, accompanied by his daughter Hannah, to find his father’s first home, and the inner work of defining himself.

Ultimately, David Weill made peace with who he is and where he belongs. “I am not turning away from Catholicism as much as I am embracing Judaism, because it is mine, always was,” he reflects. “It just took me a while to get there.”

DAVID WEILL, MD, is theformer Director of the Center for Advanced Lung Diseases and the Lung and Heart-Lung Transplant Program at Stanford University Medical Center. A sought-after advisor to various transplant programs across the country, he also serves on the Board of TransMedics, a company focused on improving availability of donor organs. Dr. Weill has also served on several non-profit boards including the Tulane Medical School, Xavier University of Louisiana, SFJAZZ, the Isidore Newman School, the New Orleans Center for Creative Arts (NOCCA) Foundation, NextGen Personal Finance, and the Bellevue Literary Review. Dr. Weill’s writing has appeared in the Wall Street Journal, USA Today, Salon, Newsweek, the Chicago Tribune, STAT, the Washington Post, The Hill, LitHub, Tablet, The Times of Israel, TODAY.com, and the Los Angeles Times.
As the government shutdown passed the one-month mark and the Trump administration said it would make only partial payments in November to sustain the program — known as Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, or SNAP — roughly 42 million people were at risk of receiving food aid late and in reduced amounts, including nearly 1.8 million New York City residents.

Stepping in to be a lifeline for families felt like second nature for some churches in New York City.

“We’ve always done this,” said Father George Sears, pastor of the Church of Good Shepherd, who was bagging food in the hallway with volunteers at 7 a.m. on Saturday, preparing to feed over 450 people.

Many religious institutions have continued to make it their mission to provide food and meals to those in need, even as membership and attendance at services have declined. In many cases, more people line up for their pantries than sit in their pews.

Pantries have long filled the gap for people who don’t qualify for food stamps or whose benefits don’t stretch far enough. The threat of reductions or funding delays has put the programs under new strain.

Met Council, the largest Jewish nonprofit organization in the country, serves more than 200 locations across New York City, and last week, it saw a 17 percent increase in turnout and is preparing for a 40 percent boost this week, according to the organization’s chief executive, David G. Greenfield.

In New York City, there are about 600 food pantries scattered across the five boroughs. Gilford Monrose, executive director of Faith-Based and Community Partnerships in the mayor’s office, said at least 90 percent of those pantries are run by either a religious organization or a nonprofit connected to a place of worship.

“As pie is to America, I would say food pantry would be to churches,” Mr. Monrose said. “Especially houses of worship in low-income neighborhoods.”

In Inwood, Ama Kofi, 51, stepped in line at 7:45 a.m. with her two neighbors from the Bronx. Ms. Kofi said the church pantry, which is open weekly, eases her anxiety about putting food on the table for her husband and three children.

“It doesn’t stress me because I know if I come here, I’ll get something,” she said.

In the two years she has used the pantry, Ms. Kofi has seen a rise in the number of people who need food.

“There are so many people that come here that don’t qualify for food stamps but they need it,” she said, holding her ticket, No. 219.

Paul Kwon, the food pantry coordinator, said the pantry, which collaborates with Cabrini Immigrant Services, helps more than 400 people each week.

He said the government’s reluctance to sustain SNAP made him “furious.” The pantry he leads is trying to stay afloat after a $20,000 loss in funding from the Federal Emergency Management Agency, after the Trump administration took back $80 million that New York received for migrants. The reduction has led the pantry to cut back, he said, and clients are noticing that “the bags aren’t as full.”

Mr. Kwon said the pantry spent around $4,600 a week on food assistance, funded by donors and federal, state and local aid. With demand high, the pantry has relied more on community fund-raisers and food drives. As of this year around 35 percent of people who use their pantry are SNAP recipients.

Because of the growing need, his pantry will stay open for an extra hour from 7 a.m. to 10 a.m. starting on Nov. 15.

According to the Food Research and Action Center, 39 percent of children, 20 percent of seniors and 10 percent of disabled people across the country depend on SNAP to put food on their tables each month.

Grocery prices have increased around 20 percent since 2020, leaving people who may not have religious affiliations dependent on their neighborhood church pantry.

Some who line up at the Church of the Good Shepherd in Inwood are elderly; many do not attend church services.Credit…Marco Postigo Storel for The New York Times

Alixa Cruz, 70, a retired office worker, walked with a cane from her public housing apartment to the pantry at St. Peter’s Chelsea, an Episcopal church. Ms. Cruz is not a member of St. Peter’s, but comes to find reasonable nutritious foods that would be outside her budget otherwise.

In a year, she went from seeing the funds on her SNAP card drop from $300 to a bit under $190 a month, but said every little bit still counts.

“SNAP helps me because you cannot live in the city,” Ms. Cruz said. “Everything is expensive.”

In the Bronx, Lowell Murray, 48, a former contractor, sat on a black stool he brought from home while waiting for the Throggs Neck Community Alliance’s food giveaway to start at the Church of St. Benedict, a Catholic church on Otis Avenue.

Mr. Murray, who said he was not able to work for health reasons, said his neighborhood pantry was a resource for healthy food that could be “expensive” even with SNAP.

Angela Torres, executive director of the Throggs Neck Community Alliance, said there was already an intense need for food aid in the Bronx, which has the highest percentage of food insecurity among city boroughs.

The pantry serves roughly 450 people weekly, she said, and recipients are on edge. “It already wasn’t enough,” Ms. Torres said. “Without SNAP, they are desperate.”

In Inwood, Ethlyn Colbourne, 81, who is retired and relies on her children, said all she could do was wait to check her SNAP card for funds.

“Maybe they will change their mind or something will happen,” Ms. Colbourne said, pushing her cart slowly. “I’m just waiting.”
