Despite many people believing the HIV crisis is “solved,” HIV remains a critical public health issue with more than 31,000[1] new diagnoses in the US each year.
Thankfully, as science and research have advanced, there are many tools available to help prevent HIV, including PrEP (pre-exposure prophylaxis) which is medicine that prevents people from getting HIV. PrEP, when taken as indicated, is highly effective, and yet many who might benefit do not receive a prescription.

According to preliminary data released by the CDC[2], in 2022, only about 36% of the 1.2 million people who could benefit from PrEP were prescribed it.

The CDC[3] also estimates that only 10% for women who could benefit from PrEP receive a prescription for it.

October 21 marks the start of PrEP Aware Week which shines a light on the importance of HIV prevention and the communities that are disproportionately impacted by HIV. The dedicated week is a time to educate everyone on the incidence rates of HIV, who could benefit from PrEP, and where to learn more about the different options available, including a daily pill or a long-acting injectable.
On Wednesday, October 23, Dr. Kimberly Smith, Head of Research and Development at ViiV Healthcare, will discuss ViiV’s comprehensive and innovative approach to HIV prevention and treatment and the role of prevention in ending the HIV epidemic once and for all.

Recognizing the Disproportionate Impacts of Lupus on Hispanic and Latinx Communities

Women of color are disproportionately affected by systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), the most common form of lupus. SLE is a chronic, inflammatory disease that can result in permanent damage to major organs.[1] Notably, it is estimated that 21 percent of those living with lupus in the U.S. are Hispanic.[2] Patients of color, including Hispanic people living with SLE, also have significantly higher rates of lupus nephritis (LN), a potentially life-threatening complication of lupus, compared to White patients.2

Hispanic and Latinx individuals may also face distinct challenges that can impact access to healthcare that may make managing the disease even more difficult, such as language barriers.[3],[4]

Fortunately, early intervention with the use of FDA-approved medications can help reduce the risk of organ damage progression.[5]

In honor of Hispanic Heritage Month, on Tuesday, September 24, Guillermo Valenzuela, M.D. is available to discuss the effect of lupus on the Hispanic and Latinx communities. Dr. Valenzuela, who is the Medical Director of the Internal Rheumatology and Immunology Specialists medical center, can also discuss the unique challenges these communities face and the importance of early disease intervention.

Their next event, “Hampton’s Summer Preview Party: An Evening of Philanthropic Fashion” will be held May 23rd, 2011. The company’s major fashion sponsors include Peace Love World, Same Sky, Native Honey, and their non-profit partners include the Somaly Mam Foundation and Print4Change/Healing Haiti, and their corporate sponsors include the Body Shop, Equinox, and many more. Sheri Sanders is a force of nature and when it comes to succeeding in the pop/rock genre of musical theatre, she wrote the book, literally.

Sheri had 20+ years behind her as an actor when she noticed that rock and pop musicals were beginning to dominate Broadway, so she piloted her very first Rock The Audition class at Pace University. She listened to her new students sing, assigned them all of her favorite hits off the radio, and taught them how to interpret rock songs and bring themselves into the stories that popular music tells.

She began giving master classes all over the country, from colleges to private musical theatre training programs, to teach voice teachers, acting teachers and their students how to style rock music.

Eleven of her current students are on Broadway and 62 of her students have been in rock musicals on Broadway, on tour, in workshops and regionally since she began.

Sheri has written the very first book on how to audition for rock musicals. Rock the Audition (Hal Leonard Books, May 24, 2011) outlines what it takes for the actor/singer to succeed, and Sheri interviews prominent members of the Broadway theater community, from Bernie Telsey and Jay Binder to Steven Oremus, Andy Blankenbuehler, Kerry Butler and Alex Lacamoire. Sheri gives the aspiring performer the proper tools to successfully audition for every genre of rock musical on Broadway. Rock the Audition teaches performers how to pick songs that create a dramatic arc, create their own appropriate cuts and arrangements, and successfully communicate the feel of a song to a pianist for proper support, and truly understand the vocal styles of different genres and how the styles changed over time.

Sheri’s students have been found in the Broadway, touring companies, and regional productions of Rock Of Ages, Wonderland, Priscilla, Queen of The Dessert, Spiderman: Turn off the Dark, Sister Act, Mamma Mia, Bloody Bloody Andrew Jackson, Spring Awakening, Wicked, Rent, The Wedding Singer, Hairspray, Legally Blonde, All Shook Up and Shout.
