During this holiday season, Paws of War is on a mission to deliver gratitude, joy, and much-needed supplies to U.S. military dog handlers and their K-9 partners overseas

NESCONSET, N.Y. – (December 2, 2025) – The holiday season is a special time of the year when people give to others to show their gratitude and appreciation for all that they do year-round. Now, people have a unique and critical opportunity to give back to dog handlers in the U.S. military who are stationed overseas. Paws of War is on a holiday mission to send special care packages to U.S. K-9 teams overseas and is seeking community members to help ensure its success.

“We are all so honored to help support them in doing what they do for our country,” said Derek Cartwright, U.S. Army veteran and international logistics coordinator for Paws of War. “We know people are looking for ways to support military members, and we would love for them to join us with this mission.”

Not only is it the season of giving, but Giving Tuesday is also upon us, reminding us to give now and beyond. Paws of War is seeking monetary donations of all sizes to help fill the care packages being sent to military bases overseas. The care packages will include sun goggles, socks for handlers, Kong toys for the K-9s, hydrating drinks, cooling fans, booties for the dogs, and more.

Individually, it would be difficult for people to make much of a difference in getting a care package to military members stationed overseas. By coming together to help Paws of War with their care package mission, we can make a significant impact that will be appreciated by all those who receive the items. By teaming up with Paws of War to provide the care packages, people will show their appreciation and support, help them feel more connected to home during the holidays, boost their morale, and provide them with practical supplies. It also helps to create a sense of community between military members and civilians.

“This is a great time to get in on the mission and excellent care packages that they are going to use and love,” said Cartwright. “We invite everyone to give a monetary donation in any amount to help and appreciate everyone’s effort in helping these military members.”

June Is Dedicated to Myasthenia Gravis Awareness

Myasthenia gravis (MG) (Mai-uhs-thee-nee-uh   gra-vuhs) is a rare, chronic, heterogeneous, and unpredictable autoimmune disease.

MG results from a problem in signaling between nerves and muscles. This problem happens in the neuromuscular junction (NMJ), the place where nerve cells and muscles communicate. Generalized myasthenia gravis (gMG) is caused by antibodies in your immune system that get in the way of signals between nerves and muscles at the NMJ that can weaken muscles throughout the body.

Shanaz, a single mom and interior designer in Los Angeles, was living an active life in 2022 when she began experiencing trouble swallowing and was diagnosed with gastroesophageal disease. That diagnosis didn’t feel quite right to her. In 2023 her symptoms took a turn for the worse: She lost her vision and couldn’t talk or swallow. At that time, she was correctly diagnosed with gMG.

Those living with gMG may experience a variety of symptoms that can make activities of daily living very challenging – activities like talking, chewing, swallowing, breathing, brushing teeth or hair, or even getting up from a chair. Those living with gMG may appear healthy on the outside, but what is happening on the inside can seriously impact every part of life.

Shanaz’s story highlights the challenges of misdiagnoses and delayed diagnosis, and underscores the critical role of self-advocacy in navigating complex medical conditions. Shanaz will tell her story. She’ll be joined by Dr. Said Beydoun (Suh-eed Bay-doon) who will discuss the symptoms and triggers of gMG and a treatment option that addresses the underlying causes of the condition.

Teaming up with the Active Family Project, soccer legend Brandi Chastain – member of the World Cup and Olympic-winning women’s soccer teams – is encouraging families to play for a change through media appearances and social media engagement. Brandi Denise Chastain

Brandi Denise Chastain (born July 21, 1968) is a professional American soccer defender and midfielder who plays for the team California Storm of Women’s Premier Soccer League and is a former member of the United States women’s national soccer team.

Chastain has played for San Jose CyberRays of the WUSA and FC Gold Pride of Women’s Professional Soccer. She is best known for her game-winning penalty shootout kick against China in the 1999 FIFA Women’s World Cup final and her bra-baring celebration afterwards. Amongst her many achievements, Chastain has won two Women’s World Cup championships, two Olympic gold medals, and an Olympic silver medal.
