Website for more information: Qelbree.com

Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is one of the most common psychiatric diagnoses in adults that affects ~1 in 16 adults and 1 in 10 children in the U.S. The condition is defined as a persistent pattern of inattention and/or hyperactivity-impulsivity that can interfere with daily life.

ADHD symptoms can include inattention (like struggling to pay attention or stay organized), hyperactivity (like being restless or talking excessively) and impulsivity (like interrupting or acting without thinking). However, ADHD symptoms aren’t always universal, especially when it comes to men and women. These symptoms can have a serious impact on those living with it and can lead to people having a hard time performing daily activities or fulfilling work responsibilities because of symptoms.

Despite ADHD being a 24/7 chronic disorder, there are options for those living with the condition to help manage symptoms, which can include a combination of behavioral management techniques as well as medication. When it comes to treatment options, there is no one-size-fits-all, and sometimes it takes trying several treatment options to figure out which works. For people with ADHD, the first step is in recognizing symptoms and having open and honest conversations with a trusted healthcare provider.

To shed light on ADHD during the awareness month, Dr. Mattingly is available for interviews to discuss how ADHD can present, various treatment options, and relevant data for doctor-patient conversations. He can also speak to:

What ADHD is and how it is known to affect the brain

How men and women may experience ADHD differently, plus symptoms that are often overlooked

Ways for managing symptoms, whether for the individual or their family and loved ones

The evolving ADHD treatment landscape and updated information on how one non-stimulant treatment option interacts with the body

CTA Foundation Executive Director Steve Ewell has been on the move this month, meeting with leaders across the aging and accessibility tech landscape. From national conferences to local events, these conversations are key to strengthening our partnerships and deepening our involvement.

Earlier in June, Steve attended On Aging 2025 , hosted by the American Society on Aging — one of the largest events focused on issues impacting older adults. With sessions on policy, design, and innovation, the conference highlighted the importance of technology in creating more accessible communities for all generations.

Just last week, Steve joined Verizon’s ADA anniversary event at Civic Hall in New York City, celebrating 35 years of progress at the intersection of people and technology.

He joined CTA Foundation Trustee Sally Lange for a fireside chat on AgeTech and how innovation can help aging adults live more independently.

The program also featured a keynote by disability activist Anastasia Somoza, who shared her experience as a member of the ADA generation and the role of technology in shaping futures.

Most think that for the approximately 2.8 million adults in the U.S. that are living with schizophrenia, life is permanently disrupted, every day is anticipating the next crisis or onset of intense symptoms, and it’s not worth planning for the future.

Despite schizophrenia being a complex and chronic brain disorder characterized by distortions in thinking, perceptions, emotions, language, and behavior, there is hope for people living with this condition to lead a normal life. Not many people living with schizophrenia or their loved ones know that long-acting injectable (LAI) treatments for schizophrenia offer potential advantages over oral medications.

This includes providing long-acting symptom control in each dose without the burden of a daily medication, improved patient outcomes, and delayed time to episodes of symptom relapse. This can allow adults living with schizophrenia to focus less on daily treatment management and more on the things that are important to them.

On May 23rd, ahead of World Schizophrenia Day (May 24th), certified psychiatric mental health nurse practitioner, and clinician regularly treating patients living with schizophrenia, Jonathan Llamas PMHNP-BC, will be available to discuss:

The obstacles his patients face managing schizophrenia symptoms and the importance of understanding that recovery is possible.

How he cultivates a positive and culturally sensitive patient-provider relationship and helps patients find a treatment regimen that’s tailored to their specific treatment goals and lifestyle.

How a specific LAI treatment option can enable adults living with schizophrenia to focus more on the things in life that are important to them.

With the height of summer in full swing, it’s now more important than ever that those 65+ are aware of the dangers that the extreme summer weather can pose.
While the warm weather allows for walks through the woods or even just a longer walk on a favorite paved trail, those activities can also include stumbling on unexpected rocks and through puddles, common when weather is humid and prone to bouts of rainfall.
Swimming can be quite slippery around the pool and wearing sandals can lead some people to trip more often – so these are other hot weather issues that can lead to falls.
Statistics from the CDC show that:
• About 36 million falls are reported among older adults each year—resulting in more than 32,000 deaths.
• Each year, about 3 million older adults are treated in emergency departments for a fall injury.

But older Americans should know that there are many practical measures they can take to avoid any falling injuries while still enjoying the physical benefits of being outdoors in summer.

Former dancer Amanda Rees draws on her extensive background in ballet, yoga and tai chi in order to develop a unique personalized, science-based program that can help reduce falls risks. The Bold Program includes customized researched-based exercises designed to improve balance, flexibility, and strength. The program is proven to reduce the incidence of falls by 46% and the exercises can all be done from the comfort of your home.

Words of Advice for Young Leaders
You Got This, Kid! challenges young leaders to find the secret sauce that will help them carve their unique path through the corporate jungle. Drawing on 30 years of experience, author Chuck Saia makes seven unforgettable analogies between the business world and the animal kingdom, from developing an armadillo’s thick skin to spotting scorpion-like managers to building a team of dolphins. All proceeds from You Got This, Kid! Words of Advice for Young Leaders will be donated to the Saia Family Fund at Quinnipiac University benefiting Lupus research and environmental sustainability efforts. The book

by Darby Fox

Publisher: Oxford University Press (January 15, 2020)

www.Darbyfox.com

The teenage years. . . parents fear this stage, dreading it even while watching their adorable toddlers explore the world. When it arrives, they try to control their teenager, in turn causing their teenager to push back more intensely. It’s a natural instinct on both sides: teenagers are changing in every way while trying to assert their independence, and parents are faced with the challenge of coming up with rules, expectations, and standards for behavior without a genuine understanding of what is happening. But the result of this pattern is a parent-child relationship defined by conflict and reactivity–a breeding ground for stress, anger, and anxiety, all of which reinforce those same cultural stereotypes and worst fears.

But it doesn’t have to be this way. In this book, family therapist Darby Fox challenges parents to redefine the goals of adolescence by reorienting their focus from what they want their child to be to on who they want their child to be. Darby not only equips parents with the insight to understand the changes taking place in their child’s brain and body and support their adolescent’s bid for independence but also offers an approach that allows parents to engage their adolescent in a relationship instead of struggling in an endless battle for control. The book is organized around a series of persistent myths about adolescence, each of which the author tears down with a combination of cutting edge neuroscience research, developmental psychology, and her own mix of clinical observations and experience raising four children.

Darby offers a new model for the parent-child relationship, encouraging parents to let go of the attempt to control their teenager and focus instead on creating mutual respect, providing structure and nurture, and encouraging independence in their developing teenager. She walks through the keys to combining structure and nurture and teaches every parent how to connect with their teen while holding them accountable for their behavior. If parents approach teen years with the same thoughtful preparation, sense of awe and wonder, and responsibility that they do the early childhood years, it can be an enjoyable and rewarding developmental stage that deepens, rather than damages, parent-child relationships.

In an interview on your program Darby can discuss:

• How to create win/win situations when a teen becomes upset.

• How to decode the language of teenagers in order to gain respect.

• How to buck the stereotype that dealing with teens is a headache nobody wants.

• Giving your teen the tools they need to make smart decisions instead of controlling their decisions

• How to debunk the myths of adolescence that make it more difficult to actually handle your adolescent child

• Understanding what is happening in your teen’s mind and body beyond the basics

• How to handle online learning

• and much more!

“Darby Fox is a true champion of her field. Rethinking Your Teenager illuminates the complex lives of teenagers in an in-depth yet accessible way.

New Survey Shows AdultsAges 50-59 See Value

But Lack Awareness of vaccines

Nearly three quarters(73%) of adults ages 50-59 say it is absolutely essential, extremely important or very important for adults their age to get vaccinated, however, more than one-third of older adults have never heard of or are unfamiliar with the vaccines recommended for their age group. In fact, 36% of adults ages 50-59 think that only high-risk people (e.g., managing chronic conditions, immuno-compromised, etc.) need adult vaccines, when in fact, many vaccines are recommended for most older adults. www.broughtbyvaccines.com/

Now, more than ever before, it is important to fully utilize the vaccines we have to help prevent the spread of disease.

A new data cut of a national survey of 3,000 US adults ages 50-79 and 300 US primary care physicians, found:

Less than half of adults in the US receive most vaccines recommended for them, in part because awareness is low.
More than three-quarters of older adults (76%) describe their current overall health as excellent or good, with a majority (67%) reporting typically seeing a healthcare provider (HCP) at least once a year, but despite this, they still are lacking on vaccine knowledge and vaccination habits.

Most physicians (80%) say getting recommended vaccines is one of the most important things older adults can do to stay healthy. Further, nearly all (96%) agree that talking with patients about the value of vaccines should be a priority for all healthcare providers.
A recommendation from an HCP is the most important factor in motivating older adults (48%) to get their vaccines.

Adults ages 50 and older may need a number of vaccines, based on their age, underlying medical conditions, lifestyle, prior vaccinations, and other considerations, including flu, shingles, pneumococcal disease, hepatitis, pertussis, and tetanus. For all adults, even those who are more health-conscious, more information and discussions with an HCP could play a critical role in improving vaccination and health outcomes.

Vaccines help protect the moments that matter in our lives and are important to help stop the spreadof disease.

Dr. Len Friedland, Vice President, and Director, Scientific Affairs and Public Health, Vaccines at GSK to learn more about the survey results and resources where your audience can learn more about recommended adult vaccines. He will be joined alternately by shingles patient advocate, Alice, who didn’t think shingles she was at risk for shingles until she contracted it at age 57.

Real Estate developers and philanthropists Don and Katrina Peebles, and their daughter Chloe, a competitive junior equestrian on the First Blue Show Circuit, saddled up with Rolls-Royce, Goldman Sachs and Georgina Bloomberg raising nearly $50,000 to benefit Give Back for Special Equestrians at a Bridgehampton benefit in support of children and veterans with disabilities. The summer soiree was held at the stunning Peebles’ estate against an opulent backdrop of serenading Juilliard School violinists and 2018 Rolls-Royce Motor Cars. A lively mix of celebrities, elite equestrians, local Hampton residents, and business executives celebrated the power of horsemanship and the unique ability horses have in healing the mind, body and spirit.

Notable attendees included: Don Peebles, Katrina Peebles, Chloe Peebles, Donahue Peebles III, Georgina Bloomberg, Sissy De Maria-Koehne, Dr. Heather Kuhl, Isabel Ernst, Ramona Singer, Nicole Cicogna, Jukai Sugarman, Tomoko Sawamura, Isabel Ernst, Dr. Heather Kuhl, Virginia Terry, Shana Kaufman, Lauren Marcus, Colin Harrison, Sarah Bray, Lynn Scotti, Dr. Guenther Koehne, Grant Kennedy, Michael Snell, Mary Kong, Lauren Reischer Sol Reischer, Libby Karmely, Shahab Karmely, Jan Juran, Bernard Lackner, Anetta Nowosielska, Joe Farrell, Chris Reardon and Paul Iritani.

The lovely evening took place on the Peebles lawn surrounded by a beautiful garden landscape. Distinguished guests mingled under the illuminated tent enjoying wine and spirits provided by event sponsor Black Stallion Winery. Greeting his guests, real estate developer, author and family man Don Peebles expressed his gratitude and what it meant to his family to be a part of the virtuous cause.

Don Peebles spoke highly of his daughter’s motivation to support Give Back for Special Equestrians. He introduces Chloe by saying, “I am so incredibly proud of you for not only your accomplishments as a competitive equestrian, but in your compassion for others and your desire to share your lifelong love of horses through your involvement with this charitable organization.”

Chloe Peebles, who has maintained a successful 14-year equestrian career, followed suit in thanking her parents and guests for joining in support of Give Back for Special Equestrians. She says, “Give Back for Special Equestrians is changing the lives of so many and to be able to support such a wonderful cause within the equestrian community has always been a dream of mine. For 14 years, especially during these past teenage years, I have come to realize and appreciate how impactful the relationship with horses and the equestrian culture can be.” Eloquently, Chloe expressed her passion for horseback riding and her fondness of the majestic animal, further describing the pivotal role the sport has played in her life. Chloe also thanked First Blue Stables, who helped sponsor the event, for all the training and support over the years. Her heartfelt words brought smiles to the faces of attendees and warmed the spirits of donors prepared to give back.

CEO and founder Sissy DeMaria-Koehne, alongside co-founders Dr. Heather Kuhl and Isabel Ernst, started the all-volunteer organization Give Back for Special Equestrians on a mission to raise funds to provide therapeutic horseback riding and equine-assisted scholarships for children and veterans with Autism, Spina Bifida, Paralysis and Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder among other disabilities. Sharing a passion for horses, they wanted to bring the joys of horsemanship, in addition to the life-changing benefits of equine therapy, to those facing some of life’s most difficult challenges. The transformative benefits of equine therapy help people with disabilities improve balance, posture, hand-eye coordination, as well as self-esteem, self-confidence and self-control.

“Thanks to the benevolence of our title sponsor, Don, Katrina and Chloe Peebles of The Peebles Corporation, Rolls-Royce and all of our generous supporting sponsors, we are able to pay forward our mutual joy for horses and horsemanship to offer more children and veterans living with mental, cognitive or emotional disabilities direct access to ‘horsepower’ that heals,” said Sissy DeMaria-Koehne.

As part of the evening’s festivities, Rolls-Royce Motor Cars presented a $5,000 donation to Give Back for Special Equestrian, supporting The Peebles Corporation’s and Give Back for Special Equestrians’ $30,000 donation to New York City therapeutic stable partner, GallopNYC. Accepting the donation, Executive Director Nicole Cicogna of GallopNYC was joined by accomplished equestrian Jukai Sugarman and her mother Tomoko Sawamura, who is also a volunteer of the nonprofit organization. The support of the generous contributions made by the Peebles Corporation and charity partner Give Back for Special Equestrians will provide therapeutic riding programs for children and adults with disabilities.

Philanthropist Katrina Peebles presented the opportunity to give back as a combined effort to provide at least 25 annual riding scholarships to riders like Jukai. One-by-one, donors raised their hands compelled to support Give Back for Special Equestrians. Guests also enjoyed a lively auction of a round-trip flight from Manhattan to the Hamptons on Blade aviation, an event sponsor. Another lucky winner received a three-night stay at Rosemary’s Cottage exquisite vacation cottage filled with historic, old-world charm and modern comfort donated by The Fisher Island Club in Miami. The event was catered by Shiraz, one of New York’s premier event companies, providing decadent hors d’oeuvres throughout the elegant evening.

Sponsors included title sponsor The Peebles Corporation, as well as supporting sponsors Rolls-Royce, Goldman Sachs, VistaJet, Fisher Island Club, Hamptons Magazine, KAR Properties, 2000 Ocean, One River Point, First Blue Stables, Alexis, Blade and Black Stallion Winery.

One of the most beloved travel personalities from the NatGeo channel, Julia Dimon. Even better we did this on a boat! We are going to be doing a live remote with her from the deck of the cruise line in Los Angeles to talk about tips on cruising and how to travel with kids when on one.
Overall 2012 Cruise Trends
Planning the trip
• Plan to stay at a nearby hotel the night before departure to minimize the stress and risk of missing the ship due to travel delays. Be sure to choose a hotel that has free transfers to the pier as well.
• Think about whom you are traveling with and the amenities you will use the most when picking your cabin. On larger ships, make sure stay close to stairwells and elevators, as it can be a long walk to everything.
• If you’re traveling to the Caribbean or Bahamas, pick a cruise that has a visit to a cruise line’s private island. The private island stops are often cruisers’ favorite parts of the trip.
Traveling with children
• Select a cabin on the deck close by to the kid’s program area and the pool.
• Make sure to take advantage of the child programs so you and your spouse can enjoy an adult evening (or two) out at one of the specialty restaurants.
• If you have small children and are not carrying on luggage, pack a carry-on with sunscreen and bathing suits, as several hours can pass between checking in and the arrival of luggage.
Cruising in a group
• If you are traveling with more than 3 guests, think twice before you try to fit everyone into one cabin. You may be able to find a combination of two cabin categories that still fit within your budget and deliver a much better experience.
Onboard
• If you plan to dine in any of the alternative dining restaurants, book in advance if possible, or as soon as you get onboard – same goes for spa appointments and shore excursions. Consider the ship times in port when making reservations too. Sea days are the toughest to get reservations for anything, so book those first. Some cruise lines offer discounts on services on the days the ship is in port.
