People with Lung Cancer, Like Others with Serious Underlying Medical Conditions
Might Be at an Increased Risk for Severe Illness from COVID-19

Lung cancer is the second most common cancer in both men and women. This year, an estimated 228,820 adults (116,300 men and 112,520 women) in the United States will be diagnosed.

The fight against lung cancer continues with new research and scientific advances, including cancer experts investigating potential ways to treat the disease in earlier stages. Some of these latest findings in non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC), including investigational studies in earlier stages of the disease, were presented at the American Society of Clinical Oncology ASCO20 Virtual Scientific Program.

Roy S. Herbst, MD, PhD of Yale Cancer Center and Smilow Cancer Hospital talks on the latest news from ASCO in the fight against lung cancer.

Lung cancer makes up almost 25% of all cancer deaths. There are two main types of lung cancer: non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) and small cell lung cancer (SCLC). NSCLC is the most common type of lung cancer. In fact, about 80%-85% of lung cancer cases are NSCLC. About 40% of patients are diagnosed at a later stage of disease, such as Stage IV, when the cancer has progressed to other organs. Approximately 10-15% of NSCLC patients in the US and Europe, and 30-40% of patients in Asia have EGFRm NSCLC. The prevalence of EGFR mutations in early stage are estimated to be ~33% in a global NSCLC population.

Until December 2016, there were no treatment options available for the nearly 9,000 individuals in the United States living with a rare disease called spinal muscular atrophy (SMA). Individuals with SMA often experienced symptoms related to the deteriorating effects of the condition, which may include the gradual onset of muscle weakness that can lead to the inability to stand or walk independently.
With scientific and treatment advances, patients of all ages have now been given hope. While commonly thought of as a pediatric disease, today 65% of individuals living with SMA are adults. One adult living with SMA is 28-year-old Kailey McCallister.
Despite being diagnosed with SMA at an early age, Kailey refused to allow the disease to keep her from having a positive outlook on her life and is eager to share her story. Kailey is joined by Dr. Margaret Frey, a neurologist specializing in SMA at Memorial Healthcare in Michigan, discusses the medical advances and initiatives that have helped the community fight back against this progressive disease
Today, an HIV diagnosis is no longer a death sentence, and people living with the virus are leading longer and healthier lives. In fact, thanks to highly effective medications, those living with HIV who have access to treatment can expect to live nearly as long as the general population.

HIV has been thrust into the spotlight recently, with innovative new therapies becoming available and the President pledging to end transmissions of the virus in the U.S. by 2030.

In just three decades, HIV has gone from an untreatable virus to one that is manageable with the right treatment regimen. Clinicians and people living with HIV can now focus on addressing the quality of life challenges that remain, namely those associated with stigma and the overall impact of lifelong therapy.

Some HIV advances in the past few years include:
•	Increased awareness and new information related to transmission – when the virus is undetectable it is untransmittable
•	Understanding the challenges facing people living with HIV while taking HIV medications over a lifetime
•	New HIV treatment focused on decreasing exposure to the number of antiretroviral medications

Dr. Debbie Hagins, Medical Director of Coastal CARE Clinics in Savannah, Georgia, who is also an Infectious Disease specialist and HIV clinical investigator, research and advances in HIV.

BIO: Loretta – Epilepsy Patient and Advocate
Loretta has a long history of living with epilepsy, from her older sister’s epilepsy to her own seizures as a teenager, to the epilepsy diagnoses of three of her sons. During her own seizures, Loretta struggled with feeling different. Even after she gained greater seizure control by getting serious about taking her various epilepsy medications as directed, something she continues to this day, the stigma lingered.
But the real challenges with epilepsy began when her son Daniel began having seizures as a toddler. The number of his daily seizures skyrocketed and the family had trouble keeping track of his seizures. Although Daniel was on medication, the seizures continued and he began having severe side effects that affected his behavior. Brain surgery and a VNS implant did little to lessen his seizures.
She didn’t give up on finding something that would help Daniel, and eventually worked with his doctor to add a new medication that would control his partial seizures. Today, they’ve found medication that works for Daniel and he is able to live and work more independently.
Despite SUDEP taking the lives of two of her three sons, Loretta has made peace with epilepsy being part of her life. As an Epilepsy Advocate, Loretta hopes sharing her personal experiences will build further awareness and understanding on living well with epilepsy.

WHAT: The Charles Evans PCF Pro-Am Tennis Tour was held in Bridgehampton, NY, over the weekend on Friday, August 22, to Sunday, August 24, 2014, raising over $2.5 million for the Prostate Cancer Foundation (PCF).

This wonderful event, returning for its tenth year, sees 32 charity amateur players take to the courts against members of the ATP Tour over two exciting days of round robin competition. Guests and participants enjoy dining and socializing with the purpose of raising funds for the PCF in its efforts to eradicate prostate cancer, which affects one in six American men. The event kicked off on Friday with a cocktail party and dinner at the home of Julia and David Koch in Southampton. On Saturday, the first three rounds of the Pro AM tournament took place, followed by a lunch at the Palin residence. On Sunday guests enjoyed lunch at the final rounds of the Pro AM tour at the Bridgehampton Tennis and Surf Club and the Trophy Award Ceremony followed.

Larry Leeds ABOUT: The Charles Evans PCF Pro-Am Tennis Tour consists of four exciting tournaments each year that are calendared during peak season at each venue. Each location brings an opportunity to provide not only a unique and individual experience for the amateur player but provides a platform to the community to generate awareness of prostate cancer and the work of the Prostate Cancer Foundation.

The PCF Pro-AM Tennis Tournaments has raised over $12.5 million to date over 13 years. The Pro-Am Tour is a fitting memorial to the life of Charles Evans. He was committed to helping others, turning his personal tragedies into philanthropic causes. Charles Evans, an avid tennis player, would be proud of what is being done to fight prostate cancer through these events. When his father developed Alzheimer’s disease in the late 1960s, Mr. Evans made large donations to Alzheimer’s research and eventually became national director of the Alzheimer’s Association. In 1975, his former wife, Frances, and their two daughters, Elizabeth and Melissa, died in a fire caused by errant ashes from their fireplace. Mr. Evans created the Crusade for Fire Detection, aimed at educating the public on the need for fire detectors and lobbying for laws to make them mandatory. Charles sent out hundreds of fire detectors as gifts and chain letters. Countless lives have been saved through the mandatory laws of fire alarms. Charles had a true zeal for life. From WWII veteran to successful entrepreneur, feature film producer, to a dedicated philanthropist. Charles was a dynamic, charismatic, old school Gentleman. He was one of a kind and adored by all worldwide.

Firmly committed to curing prostate cancer, the Prostate Cancer Foundation is the leading philanthropic organization funding and accelerating research globally. Since 1993, its unique strategies for identifying and investing in the most promising research programs have generated life-saving results. The organization channels resources to the world’s top scientific minds—cutting red tape and encouraging collaboration to speed breakthroughs. As a champion for increased government and private support, PCF has helped build a global research enterprise of nearly $10 billion. Through the generous contributions of our donors, it has funded more than 2,000 programs at more than 200 research centers in 18 countries. For more than 16 million men and their families fighting prostate cancer globally, PCF is a primary source for new standard-of-care and research information. It connects patients, loved ones, care providers and scientists to critical updates, the latest developments, best practices and news from the treatment pipeline. For further information on the PCF, please visit http://www.pcf.org/
