Inaugural Accessibility Stage Elevated Accessibility at CES The CTA Foundation debuted CES’s first-ever dedicated Accessibility Stage powered by Verizon Accessibility, with accessibility services provided by Microsoft and Aura cast broadcast audio provided by Bluetooth SIG. Located in a high-traffic area of The Venetian Convention Center, the stage featured three full days of programming and quickly became a central hub for accessibility at CES. The stage welcomed strong engagement from attendees throughout the week, bringing together industry leaders, nonprofits and innovators to share insights and showcase technologies improving independence and quality of life. We are excited to announce a groundbreaking partnership with The Mark Foundation for Cancer Research (MFCR). Together, we are launching a global initiative to fund innovative research projects exploring the complex connection between aging and cancer.

Later this month we will be inviting leading scientists from across the globe to submit novel research proposals that are focused in this field.

Selected projects will receive $500,000 in funding over three years, during which time, SWCRF along with MFCR, plan to invest up to $11 million into specific aging-cancer research.

New Treatment for Liver Cancer Slows Progression and

Improves Survival

A recent study by SWCRF-investigator, Dr. Josep Llovet (Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai), and colleagues has discovered a new treatment approach for unresectable,

non-metastatic hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC)—a form of liver cancer that cannot be surgically removed and has not yet spread to other parts of the body. Around 45,000 cases of HCC are diagnosed yearly in the US and about 1M globally.

According to their research, published in The Lancet (January 2025), combining transarterial chemoembolisation (TACE) with the drugs lenvatinib (a targeted therapy) and pembrolizumab (an immunotherapy) significantly improved patient outcomes compared to the placebo group.

Specifically, patients receiving this combination therapy experienced slower tumor progression and a trend towards overall higher survival rates. Additionally, the drug combination was well-tolerated, with manageable side effects, supporting its potential as a viable treatment option in patients with intermediate HCC.

“SWCRF has been instrumental in supporting the development of the HCC program at Mount Sinai since 2004. Their commitment to funding innovative cancer research has allowed us to make these significant strides in understanding and treating this devastating disease. This breakthrough would not have been possible without their continued support”, said Dr Josep M Llovet, Professor of Medicine and Director of the Liver Cancer Program at the Ichan School of Medicine.

This remarkable improvement marks the first clinical breakthrough in treating this challenging and often fatal form of cancer in more than 20 years.

Just as you may not run as fast or jump as high as you did as a teenager,your brain’s cognitive power—that is, your ability to learn, remember, and solve problems—slows down with age. You may find it harder to summon once familiar facts or divide your attention among two or more activities or sources of information. These changes affect your ability to focus, so you may find yourself getting more easily distracted than you were when you were younger.Hearing loss that often accompanies aging makes it more difficult to distinguish speech in a noisy environment. Because hearing then requires more concentration than usual, even mild loss of the ability to focus can affect speech comprehension.

Most people start to notice changes as they enter their 50s and 60s. Although these changes can cause consternation, most age-related memory and thinking problems don’t stem from an underlying brain disease such as Alzheimer’s disease. Instead, what appears to be a memory problem may simply reflect a slower processing speed and poor encoding and retrieval of new memories as a result of diminished attention. However, even though your brain may be slower to learn and recall new information, your ability to make sense of what you know and to form reasonable arguments and judgments remains intact.

Many of these limitations are reversible and related to poor sleep, but structural changes that take place in your brain as you age can explain some of these developments, too. Brain regions involved with memory processing, such as the hippocampus and especially the frontal lobes, undergo anatomical and neurochemical changes over time.

The result is that as you age, it takes longer to absorb, process, and remember new information. The natural loss of receptors and neurons that occurs with aging may also make it harder to concentrate. Therefore, you not only learn information more slowly, but you also may have more trouble recalling it because you didn’t fully learn it in the first place. With slower processing, facts held in working memory may dissipate before you have had a chance to solve a problem.

In addition, the ability to perform tasks that involve executive function declines with age. Many people learn to compensate for these changes by relying on habit most of the time and devoting extra effort to focus on new information they are trying to learn.

Even the aches and pains of getting older can affect focus. Pain itself is distracting, and some of the medications used to treat it also can affect concentration.

Time may be an illusion (lunchtime doubly so), but apparently that does not stop its steady march from wreaking havoc on our bodies. As humans age, we experience a wave of physiological effects from head to toe: graying hair, deteriorating eyesight, heart problems, and weakened bones, just to name a few of the possibilities.

The conundrum is that we’ve also made leaps in improving medical care so that, on average, a person born today can expect to live longer than someone born a couple hundred years ago. But living longer does not mean the aging process itself takes a holiday, and people are still faced with the prospect of physical and mental decline. Understanding how and why we age is therefore of great interest the world over. And, as it happens, one of the best laboratories for decoding these mysteries is currently soaring about 260 miles above our heads.

A fleet of studies conducted on board the International Space Station shows that space travel affects our bodies in ways that are strikingly similar to aging, just put on fast forward. “It’s estimated that the heart, blood vessels, bones, and muscles deteriorate more than 10 times faster in space than by natural aging,” Shi En Kim writes for Nat Geo.

In some cases, these effects are reversed once the person returns to terra firma, which is certainly good news for astronauts. Still, the ISS provides scientists with a unique opportunity to study age-related maladies on shorter time scales—and experiment with drugs that may help treat the worst effects of getting older. Of course, it may be a while yet before any of this foundational science leads to major medical breakthroughs. But don’t panic. As long as astronauts are in orbit, discoveries about longevity are sure to come flowing back down to Earth.

The fifth astronaut in the Senate: The previously mentioned Mark Kelly today follows in the footsteps of John Glenn, Harrison Schmidt, Jake Garn, and Bill Nelson to serve both in space—and in the upper house of Congress. Kelly, who won Arizona’s Senate election, not only is the twin brother of another former NASA astronaut, Scott Kelly, but he is the husband of former U.S. Rep. Gabby Giffords. Glenn and Schmidt served with NASA before coming to Congress; Garn and Nelson flew on the space shuttle after being elected to Washington, Space.com reports.

Vaccine news: Britain today approved a COVID-19 vaccine from Pfizer, paving the way for the first 800,000 of an estimated 40 million shots for the UK to roll out next week, CNN reports. Here’s the latest on vaccine efforts and a report on why some people can become reinfected with the virus.

Slow burn: Why were experts and others so late to the realization that COVID-19 was spreading to rural and small-town America? Limited resources, stigma, and politics made the coronavirus difficult to track in rural areas, allowing its spread to go largely unnoticed all summer, Lois Parshley writes for Nat Geo. Since the coronavirus first hit U.S. cities in force, “it was just a matter of time before we saw it in more rural settings,” says Johns Hopkins epidemiologist Stefan Baral. More than 270,000 Americans have died since February from the virus, and more than 13,7 million people have been infected.

From discarded PPE to bricks: That’s what an Indian entrepreneur is doing with the rising stocks of disposable face masks from the pandemic. “I have eco-anxiety,” says Binish Desai, who already has molded 40,000 bricks for construction from the used (and well sanitized) personal protective equipment and is gearing up to produce 15,000 such bricks a day. The masks are often made of polypropylene plastic, which can take hundreds of years to degrade, the Washington Post reports.

The 12,500-year-old story: It has been hailed as “the Sistine Chapel of the ancients”—a cliff face with tens of thousands of paintings that was recently discovered in Amazon rainforest. The age of the paintings was partly determined by what these early Amazon settlers painted; the portraits include Ice Age animals such as the mastodon and the palaeolama, the Guardian reports. The discovery was made by a British-Colombian team in Colombia’s Serranía de la Lindosa.

The W: On the next clear night, take a tour of a group of stars that form a large lopsided W high above the northeastern horizon. That’s the constellation Cassiopeia. Its five most visible stars shine with similar brightness, but their distance varies greatly, with the star Caph only 54 light-years away while Gamma Cassiopeiae sits 650 light-years from Earth. Cassiopeia is also home to two jewel-like open star clusters easily visible with binoculars. The easiest to pick out is NGC 663, but look near the bright star Ruchbahm and you can also glimpse the majestic Owl Cluster, a swarm of 200 newborn stars over 9,000 light-years away. A humble bean to the rescue: For centuries, the Wayuu people of Colombia survived a harsh desert environment by herding goats and harvesting wild fruits. They also cultivated the brown-patterned cowpeas dubbed after the Spanish name for their home, guajiro beans. That sacred bean may save the Wayuu, whose land has been plagued by droughts and a dam that has dried their watershed. According to the latest statistics from the NYC Department for the Aging, more than 18 percent, (over 1.52 million) of New Yorkers are over the age of 60. And this number is growing daily as the Boomer generation becomes the Senior population. To commemorate this wide and varied group, and to continue providing services and activities to keep them engaged, vital and cared for, JASA, one of New York’s largest and most trusted agencies serving more than 43,000 older adults in the New York metropolitan area, will host its annual Celebrating Seniors fundraiser on Tuesday, May 10. WASHINGTON–(BUSINESS WIRE)–Today during the White House Conference on Aging, Philips announced the creation of the AgingWell Hub (AWH), a unique new research center for open innovation that will examine and share solutions for aging well. The initiative will identify new technologies, products and services, as well as provide thought leadership in collaboration with older adults, caregivers, healthcare systems, payers, policy makers, corporate innovators, entrepreneurs and academia. The AWH will also seek solutions to improve technology adoption among older adults and make aging well a reality for more people, by enabling them to better connect with their communities and healthcare providers.

As part of the first phase of this initiative, Philips will collaborate with industry and issue experts, including leaders with a common interest in aging well such as American Architectural Foundation (AAF), eHealth Initiative, the Global Social Enterprise Initiative (GSEI) at Georgetown University’s McDonough School of Business, Georgetown University Urban and Regional Planning Program, Humana, MedStar Health, Merck, Respect a Caregiver’s Time (ReAct), Smart Living 360, StreetScape USA, Westchester County’s Department of Senior Programs and Services (New York) and The Gary and Mary West Health Institute. AWH thought leaders and experts will create a blueprint for a research hub, expected to be based in Cambridge, Massachusetts. In addition, Philips is in discussion with the MIT AgeLab to advise on the lab design and research program.

The Philips AgingWell Hub will have three key areas of focus:

1.

Drive Open Innovation by creating learning labs to accelerate transformation and improvements in the aging journey. This would allow for open co-creation by engaging older adults, caregivers, healthcare systems, payers, policy makers, corporate innovators, entrepreneurs and academia. The goal is to understand the true cost and performance of care and how it can be improved with innovation and collaboration.

2.
Share Thought Leadership by leveraging data, analytics and dialog to create and share insights that foster transformation. These insights will allow healthcare systems to be more proactive and preventative, enabling aging adults to live at home for as long as possible. As part of this commitment, AWH will share insights, as well as collaborate with other industry leaders on how to improve the efficacy of care delivery, solutions and services for living well.

Promote Positive Image of Aging by working with others to promote a positive image of senior care, helping to tackle the “stigma” that can limit caregiving support and seniors’ access to it. AWH would develop communications materials and drive a positive and enabling image of aging and older adults.

The AWH expands on the Philips Center for Health and Well-being Aging Well Think Tank, as well as its work and researchwith GSEI, which has examined the attitudes and behaviors among the aging population and their caregivers regarding the adoption of technology. Through this work, Philips and its collaborators have found that a new approach is needed – a consumer-centric approach that involves government, industry, healthcare systems, academic institutions and nonprofit organizations as partners in the design of new programs and smart technologies that will empower older adults to thrive.
