As we are approaching Pain Awareness Month in September, it is a time to highlight the issues of postoperative pain and postoperative pain management in the United States. Recent data shows that 67% of patients filled an opioid prescription between 30 days before through 14 days after surgery. In the past, postoperative pain management has been a one-size-fits all approach and there is an urgent need for it to be more individualized.
While patients routinely are searching for a safe and effective way to manage the pain they experience following surgery, many tell doctors they want to avoid the adverse effects that are commonly experienced by those receiving opioids to reduce their pain. The most common adverse effects are dizziness, nausea and constipation. But even more than that, patients want to avoid any risk of misuse and addiction.
Now there’s been a new development; what some surgeons are calling a “game-changer” for postoperative pain. The FDA recently approved a treatment that works on both inflammation and pain at the surgical site for up to 3 days for those who undergo bunion surgery, hernia repair and total knee replacement surgeries. Clinical trials have shown that this new treatment reduces the need for and can eliminate in many patients, potentially addictive opioids. The safety and efficacy of this new treatment has not been established in highly vascular surgeries, such as intrathoracic, large multilevel spinal, and head and neck procedures. The new treatment also contains an NSAID (non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug), a type of medicine which:

can increase the risk of a heart attack or stroke that can lead to death. This risk increases with higher doses and longer use of an NSAID.

cannot be used during heart bypass surgery.

can increase the risk of gastrointestinal bleeding, ulcers, and tears.

Dr. Alan Rechter, an orthopedic surgeon, will be available to discuss the newest method of effectively managing postoperative pain. He will explain why this latest development is such an important step in helping patients who are undergoing a variety of procedures.

Dr. Alan Rechter is a board-certified orthopedic surgeon and has practiced medicine in Houston since 1995. He joined Orthopaedic Associates in 1999 and has staff privileges at Methodist West & Houston Orthopedic & Spine Hospital in Bellaire. He is a former Clinical Assistant Professor of Orthopedics at the University of Texas Medical School.

“I was SO PROUD tonight. There I was, at St. Luke’s Theater, holding a flyer for Wicked Clone. Tears of joy and sisterly pride were in my eyes, as I said to myself, “They did it! They did it!” I have never been more proud of my good friends, Mihaela and Gabriela. I’ve seen their talent all along, and KNEW they’d make it in a famous venue like this someday; and today was that day. The Cinema Musical of Wicked Clone definitely did the book justice! I felt like I was really there, in medieval Transylvania, and then in Times Square; just as the cinema novel transported me to those places. And, like the novel, the emotions, suspense, and imagery were really intense!!! Those film projections were really scary, action-packed, and awesome; they truly brought it to life! WOW! It was cool, because I got to see what the different characters look like! I got to see Vlad, Lucifer, David, and Rommy, for the first time ever! I also FINALLY got to hear how certain songs go. I knew the words, because of the poetry book; but I finally heard the melodies for the first time. These songs included “Honey Money” and “Dracula’s Land”. I was AMAZED at Mihaela’s vocal range! At one point in the musical, she belted out an impressively high note- I think it was a B5, which is one note away from the soprano “high C!” That was amazing; and a cool surprise, since Mihaela’s usually the one who sings the lower parts. I bet Queen’s Roger Taylor would be proud! It made me so happy to see I actually contributed to the play, in a small way! I remember giving the Twins a few requests. I loved the playful romance between Mihaela and Charlie Chaplin in the “Tell Me Less” video, and I told the Twins I wanted to see more of “#Miharlie”. I also requested Mihaela pronounce her “L’s” with her lip more often, since it suggests a fangless mouth; and that she and vamp Gabriela have a human vs. vampire “la la la” because of this difference. Sure enough, in the cinema musical tonight, Mihaela and Gabriela sang “la la la” back and forth; with Mihaela’s “la la la” pronounced with her lip. And later on, Charlie made a guest appearance; I saw a whole 20 minutes of Mihaela and Charlie falling in love, and dancing together for two songs. And I saw Mihaela singing “Love Flu” about Charlie, which was straight out of a fanfiction I wrote a while ago! So when I noticed the Twins took my requests, AND referenced my fanfiction, I was thinking to myself, “YAAAAAS!” I had the biggest smile in these parts! I was the very first to pick up on the fact that the narrator’s and male characters’ voices were Gabriela’s, pitched down with an effect. I asked Gabriela backstage, “Was that you?” because I had a feeling it was her. She said yes; and she said everyone else, not even the tech guy, was able to figure that out! So I felt cool! I LOVED the last fight, the duel, between Mihaela with a cross and Gabriela with a weapon. That was INTENSE!!! I loved when Mihaela bit Gabriela with her human bite, winning the fight; and just when you thought Mihaela was dying, Gabriela’s piano music brought her back to life. What a great ending, seeing the Wicked Clone turn good. I especially loved the inspirational message at the end, about acceptance, and about being like God. That was very empowering. I had an amazing time yesterday when I went to see “Wicked Clone”. It reminded me of old fashioned heartfelt emotions that films of the past instilled emotions of a higher being that all people could share and relate with one another. It reminded me of Italian art and movies of great artists who were not afraid to integrate Great stories with God. The cinematography was great and not in the least pretentious. These two actresses gave a heartwarming and wining portrayal of this Cinema Musical. I also enjoyed the artistic dancing and beautiful style of singing! It has made me feel that my life has been more than passing through life without experiencing all the miracles that God has bestowed on all of us.

100: The Apollo Celebrates Ella will honor the career of the “First Lady of Song” and her relationship to the Apollo Theater, where she won Amateur Night at the age of 17 and performed regularly throughout her storied career. This concert marks the inaugural performance of the Theater’s celebration of the jazz icon’s centennial, with events and performances through the spring of 2017.

Ella Fitzgerald was a regular performer at the Apollo Theater over the course of her illustrious career. Her relationship with the Theater began in the midst of the Harlem Renaissance, when she made her singing debut in the fall of 1934 as a nervous 17-year-old competing in the Amateur Night variety show. Apollo legend has it that she originally planned to dance, but made the last minute decision to sing after being intimidated by the competition. Ella was so nervous she improvised song lyrics by imitating its instruments—a technique that would become part of her signature repertoire, scatting. That night, she won the top Amateur Night title, making her the first female performer to earn such a distinction. Soon after her win, she joined the Chick Webb Orchestra and began touring with the group throughout some of the city’s most famous venues. In 2006, Ella Fitzgerald was inducted into the Apollo Walk of Fame in in honor of her long history with the Theater, as well as her continued influence on the American music landscape.

“Long before anyone knew her as a powerhouse performer, Ella Fitzgerald made a name for herself at one of the earliest editions of Amateur Night,” said Kamilah Forbes, the Apollo Theater’s Executive Producer. “Her innovations in vocal jazz that started on our stage exemplifies the Apollo’s tradition of nurturing creativity and pushing artistic boundaries. For Ella’s centennial birthday, we’re thrilled to celebrate the Queen of Jazz, the timeless talent she represents, and the generations she has inspired.”

Music highlights for 100: The Apollo Celebrates Ella include “A Ticket a Tasket,” “Blues in the Night,” “Miss Otis Regrets,” “You’ll Have to Swing It” and more. The concert is produced in collaboration with seven-time GRAMMY® – winning producer Gregg Field, who at the age of 24 toured as the drummer for both Count Basie and Ella Fitzgerald. Field also produced the Emmy nominated PBS special “Great Performances: We Love Ella,” for Ella’s 90th birthday.

This extraordinary concert is the first of the Theater’s four events that will honor the “First Lady of Song’s” centennial birthday. The Apollo’s celebration of Ella will extend into Spring, 2017 with Live Wire: Ella! A Centennial Celebration a discussion commemorating Ella’s legacy (Thursday, March 23, 2017); Apollo Music Café: Ella Fitzgerald Tribute an evening featuring contemporary jazz artists celebrating the songstress (Friday, April 7, 2017) and a special Jazz edition of Amateur Night celebrating the first female to win the Theater’s signature program (Wednesday, April 19, 2017).

About the Artists

David Alan Grier has earned many accolades and awards throughout the years for a stellar career that spans across multiple mediums. The three-time Tony and GRAMMY® Award nominee studied Shakespeare at Yale University where he received his MFA from the Yale School of Drama. He went on to build a diverse resume with countless credits in television, film, theater and comedy under his belt. Most notably, he was an integral cast member of the classic hit variety television show In Living Color and was named among Comedy Central’s list of Top 100 Greatest Stand-Ups. He has appeared on Broadway in the Gershwins’ Porgy and Bess in 2012, alongside Audra McDonald , and was nominated for a Tony Award and a Grammy for that role. In fall 2015, he adopted a role in NBC comedy series The Carmichael Show, which will return for its third season this spring. Shortly after this debut, he appeared as the Cowardly Lion in NBC’s live performanceof The Wiz Live!, for which he earned two Image Awards and two Critics’ Choice Awards nominations.

GRAMMY® award-winning singer and Harlem native Patti Austin, whose unique sound crosses all musical genres, has released an incredible 17 solo albums and a string of hit singles (like the R&B classic “Baby Come To Me”) over the course of her 60 plus years in the entertainment business. In striking similarity to Ella Fitzgerald, Austin is an Apollo legend in her own right and her storied career also began on the Apollo stage when at the age of four she performed on Amateur Night. She signed a contract with RCA Records shortly after and went on to become a mainstay on Billboard’s jazz and r&b charts, respectively.

Considered one of the premiere voices in jazz music, Cassandra Wilson is a world renowned vocalist, songwriter and producer celebrated for her rich, dusky sound, improvisational and interpretive gifts. A two time GRAMMY® winner and Down Beat magazine’s Jazz Vocalist of the Year for three consecutive years, Wilson has been hailed as “America’s best singer” and “the true heir of Billie Holiday and Sarah Vaughn” by TIME magazine. Making her name in the 1980s as a founding member of Steve Coleman’s free-ranging M-Base Collective, Wilson’s breakthrough 1993 album Blue Light Until Dawn was a prime collection of originals and songs by Robert Johnson, Mitchell, Hank Williams and Van Morrison. She won a GRAMMY for 1996’s New Moon Daughter, and the following year sang on the recording and tour of Wynton Marsalis’ Pulitzer Prize-winning oratorio Blood on the Fields.

Citing Billie Holiday, Ella Fitzgerald, and Dinah Washington, as her musical influences, soul music chanteuse Andra Day is considered soul music’s brightest new star, having been nominated for two GRAMMY® Awards this year for her debut album Cheers to the Fall and her hit single, “Rise Up.” Already in her career, the singer has performed at the White House, at the 2016 Democratic National Convention and appeared alongside Stevie Wonder in an Apple TV commercial singing Wonder’s song, “Someday at Christmas.” In late 2015, she embarked on her first national tour when she opened up for rock legend Lenny Kravitz. Known for her vocal blend of R&B, jazz, blues and gospel, The New York Times calls Lizz Wright “a smoky-voiced goddess.” Wright has been mesmerizing music fans worldwide ever since she appeared on the late pianist and composer Joe Sample’s 2002 disc, The Pecan Tree. The following year, she gained even wider recognition for her critically acclaimed debut record, Salt on Verve Records. Produced by the legendary Tommy LiPuma – best known for his award-winning work with George Benson, Diana Krall, and Natalie Cole – the album helped introduce her as one of the most fascinating female vocalists of her generation as it raced to number two on the charts. After a move to Concord, she released Freedom & Surrender, her fifth album, in 2015.

Two time Academy award-winning actor, director, producer, and singer Kevin Spacey catapulted to international stardom with films such as LA Confidential, The Usual Suspects and American Beauty. Even more diverse roles followed, and his turn to TV acting in 2013 garnered across-the-board acclaim, as he began inhabiting the character Frank Underwood on Netflix’ first original, multi-award winning drama series House of Cards. In addition to film acting, Spacey has earned acclaim for his work as a film producer and director, and is a well-respected theatre actor who served as Artistic Director of London’s legendary Old Vic theatre for 11 years. Spacey’s most recently performed at PBS’ “Billy Joel: The Library of Congress Gershwin Prize”, and in “Tony Bennett Celebrates 90: The Best Is Yet To Come” airing in December on NBC.

Monica Mancini, the daughter of famed film composer Henry Mancini and notable studio singer Ginny O’Conner Mancini, has carved out an impressive career of her own as a concert performer, appearing with major symphony orchestras worldwide, including the Chicago Symphony, Dallas Symphony, Seattle Symphony and the London Metropolitan Orchestra. She is a two-time GRAMMY® nominee whose program often includes the classic songs “The Shadow of Your Smile,” “Moment to Moment,” “Moon River,” “Soldier in the Rain,” “Alfie,” “Charade,” “Days of Wine and Roses” and “Over the Rainbow.”

A Talk by Ágnes Kőry, Director of the Béla Bartók Centre for Musicianship (London)

Judith Pisar has devoted her career to building cultural bridges across the Atlantic. As President of Arts France-USA, an organization committed to cultural exchange between the two countries, she regularly produces concerts and festivals of American music in Paris – including tributes to Leonard Bernstein, George Gershwin, Broadway, Duke Ellington and Louis Armstrong. Prior to that she served for 17 years as Chairman of the American Center of Paris, the avant-garde meeting place for French and American artists. In that capacity she selected Frank Gehry to design a new building in 1988 – one of his first in Europe. Described by Philip Johnson as “America’s Cultural Czarina in Europe,” she has also served on the French Ministry of Culture’s Conseil Supérieur du Mécénat, on the board of the Régine Chopinot Ballet and as a founding signatory of the World Charter against Cancer. Earlier in her career, she served as Director of Music at the Brooklyn Academy, Executive Director of the Merce Cunningham Dance Company and founded The Composer Speaks, a lecture bureau which brought some of the greatest composers of the 20th Century — Pierre Boulez, Karlheinz Stockhausen, Iannis Xenakis, John Cage, Luciano Berio and others — to cities and universities throughout the United States. She is an Officer of the French Legion of Honor and a Knight of the Order of Arts and Letters.
Performers
Vilmos Szabadi (violin)
Mr. Szabadi is Hungary’s foremost violinist, a regular soloist and frequent guest artist in the most prestigious concert halls around the world. Vilmos Szabadi studied at the Franz Liszt Academy of Music of Budapest where on receiving his diploma, he became the youngest ever to join the Professors’ team. His career as an international Concert violinist took off when he played Bartók 2nd Violin Concerto during the Bartók Festival at the Royal Festival Hall in London. The success of this Concert, led to invitations from the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra and the BBC Philharmonic Orchestra as well. Mr. Szabadi was also among the privileged musicians invited by HRH Prince Charles to perform at the celebration in honor of Sir Georg Solti’s 80th birthday held at the Buckingham Palace in 1992. In 1993 the prestigious “Franz Liszt” prize has been awarded to Vilmos Szabadi by the Hungarian Government. In 1995 he also appeared on the Stradivarius series, played the Strad violin owned by Spanish Royalty in Madrid. Mr. Szabadi is a recent double prize winner of the renowned MIDEM Festival in Cannes, France. He plays a cremonese Laurentius STORIONI instrument dated 1778.

Mariann Marczi (piano)
Mariann Marczi started playing piano at the age of four and now she holds a PhD from Franz Liszt Academy of Budapest, where she is a Professor. Ms. Marczi is a winner of many national and international awards, scholarships and piano competitions. She performed almost in every country in Europe, and she is also a frequent guest artist at many music festivals, such as the Bartók Festival; Prague-Wien-Budapest Festival etc. Her repertoire includes a wide range of works from early Baroque to contemporary music. Ms. Marczi turns with particular attention towards the works of J. S. Bach, Béla Bartók and György Kurtág. Since 2012 she is also a member of the World Piano Teachers Association and she often participates as lecturer at international conferences, such as the World Piano Conference (Novi Sad, Serbia) and the London International Piano Symposium.
Eszter Karasszon (cello)
Eszter Karasszon is a young Hungarian cellist, student at the Franz Liszt Academy of Music of Budapest. She is already a winner of many national and international awards, such as the Dohnányi Chamber Competition (2013) and the VI. David Popper Competition (2015). In 2010 she has been granted a scholarship giving her the possibility to participate in a master class of Indiana String Academy to Janos Starker. Ms. Karasszon has not only performed in Hungary but in many European countries and in the United States as well.
Ágnes Kőry (talk)
Hungarian-born Ágnes Kőry is a graduate of the Béla Bartók Conservatoire Budapest, Royal Academy of Music London (DipRAM) and University of London (MPhil). An ex-professional cellist, she focuses on research into a variety of fields (which include baroque string instruments, composers Béla Bartók and Zoltán Kodály, Holocaust history ). Ágnes Kőry presented her papers on musicological conferences (University of Edinburgh, University of London, University of Manchester, Institute of Musicology Budapest) . She is an author of many musicological journals such as the Galpin Society Journal, Studia Musicologica, Early Music, The Consort, Ethnomusicological Forum and Parlando. Ágnes Kőry’s scholarly papers are also published on a variety of scholarly websites in the United States, United Kingdom, Hungary and Israel. Ágnes Kőry is a regular contributor to classical music websites. Ágnes Kőry leads the Béla Bartók Centre for Musicianship (London), where specialized musicianship training coexists with comprehensive music education

More about the Memorial concert on Thursday. Over 400 people have signed up!
The performers were all people who knew and in some way worked with Ellen and I.

Patti Rothberg is a Scarsdale based singer-songwirter who had a gold album in the 90’s, who writes and performs very moving songs. Patti and I collaborated on a song entitled Genius Bar after she performed with a then unknown artist. They had both just broken up with people who worked at the same Apple store on 5th Ave. This inspired our song at bit.ly/a5f5cm. The other artist’s song was a little different and turned out to be a little more successful onceChristine Aguilera picked up on it. It is called Say Something and that other artist was Ian Axel. It is also sadly ironic……

Jennie Walker is a terrific singer and songwriter who has charmed us with her performances and collaborated on a musical play I wrote called Broad on Wall. She will sing Its Our Time, a song she once dedicated to Hillary Clinton’s presidential campaign. The Clintons got to meet Ellen at her part-time job at ICD Jewelry store, and they too, were taken by Ellen’s warmth and wonderful presence. The Clintons have been very kind and supportive in the wake of this tragedy.

Nthomb’Khona Dlamini is one of the original performers at our legendary South African-style Barbecues (The Scarsdale Braai) that began in our backyard and over the years brought hundreds of people to various parks in Westchester. She and her husband, bass-player,Jimmy Mgwandi were the hit of our events and her voice is reminiscent of a young Miriam Makeba. Even after Disney discovered her and put her in the Lion King, she continued to perform at our events. Ellen loved her version of Pata Pata and many other songs in Zulu and Xhosa whose meanings she may not have understood but whose emotional impact she got completely.

The musical director, Berklee School of music graduate and professional drummer, Joel Arnow is a family member.

This is not a fundraiser but we are asking people, if they wish, to help us offset the cost of mounting this kind of event at a top performance venue in midtown Manhattan.

We have not forgotten the other victims in this tragedy and can only hope this will begin the healing and inspire the best minds of our industry to help those in legacy industries to do better. We never knew we were interdependent. Sadly, now we do.
