Imagine living in the perfect home. By that I mean breathing in air that is pure and super healthy for you, having insulation that keeps all critters out, and enjoying the same lovely temperature wherever you go, whether standing by the window or in your cozy bed.

It’s already a reality – a positive trend in the construction and design business. Focusing on the optimal health and longevity of humans, buildings, and planet.

It’s referred to as, “Passive House Standards.” Establishing excellence and efficiency, which then creates limitless opportunities for better living.

For example, during new construction or when retro-fitting an older building, you can have fun testing for “air tightness” and insulation to make sure that air pollution, harsh weather, and creatures of all sizes will not share your home with you. Then you add the “energy recovery ventilation,” which is filtered fresh air, to really get the best level for breathing. Don’t worry, you can still open your high-performance window whenever you want. You’ll be an energy efficient citizen and can brag to your friends about how low your heating and air conditioning bills are.

By doing all these things, your building emits fewer greenhouse gases and you’re saving energy, which in turn produces significantly lower utility bills and a much healthier indoor environment. In addition to improving air quality, it creates a comfortable and consistent temperature inside, and “acoustically superior” conditions (reduced noise from neighbors and street). What’s not to love?

Wait, how much does all this cost upfront? Don’t worry, each building can be carefully assessed for its exact needs and there are ways to get help with financing, discounts, and incentives. Besides, the savings from lower utility bills will quickly make up for it, as will the quality of life for you and the planet.

If you’re an owner, developer, or enthusiastic tenant, it’s not only an excellent idea, but with certain earth-improving laws these days – and more coming – it’s increasingly a part of a building’s requirements. It’s a prudent business decision to get on board now.

The difference between goals and new laws depends on various components such as square footage and the building’s location in the world.

In NYC, buildings are the largest contributor to climate change, so “Local Law 97” sets limits on their gas emissions in order to help reach the goal of a 40 percent reduction of emissions by the year 2030. In a longer range plan, city officials have committed to achieving double that: 80 percent reduction of greenhouse gas by 2050. (Also known as “80 by 50.”)

“It’s a standard of comfort and health just as much as it is for energy,” says Sara Bayer, an Associate Principal and Director of Sustainability at Magnusson Architecture and Planning. With new buildings, she strives to make sustainable, healthy, and uplifting design achievable for all.

“I’m hoping the real estate industries learn how to sell it,” says Sara. “So when someone looks at a new home and asks, ‘Where’s my fresh air coming from?’ the realtor answers, ‘Oh yeah, you’re in a passive house.'”

With new buildings or retro-fitting old ones, certain factors are considered “passive” and can be optimized for greater good, hence the word passive. The methodology and coding originate from Germany’s Passivhaus Institute (PHI). They provide official certification as does Passive House Institute US (PHIUS).

“The tightness of the passive house is where the magic is, the most bang for your buck, basically,” Sara continues. “You test that on site during construction until you prove that you’ve done it. Quality control. To get passive house certified, you have to use the software from that certifying body. There are two of them, international and national. It’s just a way that the physics are calculated.”

Amy Failla is a Certified Passive House Designer and Principal at Ingui Architecture. One of her specialties is retro-fitting older buildings and she sees New York as a leader in the field.

“We say to clients, ‘You’re already doing this amount of work, why not build a better house?’ I think in general it’s intimidating to a lot of people. I’m from the Midwest and it hasn’t really picked up there yet. People automatically think, oh, I can’t afford that. So I think there has to be some precedent set first. There are definitely precedents getting set, especially in New York, where we have so many buildings with multi-families that need attention. NYU is a good example. They’re really taking initiative to improve their buildings.”

Maybe your place is not as big as NYU or you’re not quite as rich yet. Whatever your building size, type, and budget might be, you can reach out to New York Passive House (NYPH) to guide you through the many options. Financial help can be available from places like New York State Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA), Inflation Reduction Act (IRA), and ConEd. (See also the list at the end of the article.)

“I look at the intelligence of nature,” says Amy. “We have hundreds of years of data, so how can we bring some of it to the interior and architectural design elements to enhance human health and productivity?

“We can use AI if we’re looking across the design of buildings and the actual engineering and construction. Looking at what’s healthy and what’s sustainable, both for the people inside and for the environment. AI can analyze this. It can help us do the calculations so much faster. It really excels at being a super advanced calculator and recognizing patterns. It’s about how we organize and interface with that data.

“From a conceptual and design element, we could recognize patterns in nature that are healthy for us. We can go all through the process of then recognizing how to implement it in a sustainable way that’s healthy for people and the environment – with the statistics. And what are the price points of doing that? Where do we have to make compromises? Where are the different opportunities and the return on investment?

“It can also be used to help us understand how to develop new materials. We can look at how to design materials that respond and react to the environment and people’s needs for health. It can be incorporated in very easy ways, with plant life, water features, and then go to natural materials. Put AI to work. Program a responsive interior system.

“The biggest things that I think are necessary are collaboration and working with other people. Creative and critical thinkers. The more creative and critical you are, the more you can use the tools to help your work shine. You need the right mindset, the right questions, and then with other creative thinkers, to all together keep asking.”

Fellow artist and innovator, Amelia Winger-Bearskin, is the Banks Preeminence Endowed Chair of Artificial Intelligence and the Arts at the University of Florida and the Digital World Institute. She’s also the founder of the University of Florida’s AI Climate Justice Lab, where they simulate just futures using environmental research data in artificial intelligence systems.

Ms. Winger-Bearskin recently patented an algorithm for a home device she invented. It measures air quality, temperature, and other sensory and scientific information. One thing she discovered is that a lot of previous research had been done on tall men.

“They studied only men who are over six feet tall,” says Amelia. “They’re very warm, they’re large, and it’s generally made toward their body type. So I said, ‘Let’s make a new algorithm!’ It’s a bit more diverse and you can even say to it that not everyone here is over six feet tall, we’re actually kind of shorter. It will automatically know that you might need it to be warmer, or you can give it feedback. More customized to you.”

Amelia is Haudenosaunee (Iroquois) of the Seneca-Cayuga Nation of Oklahoma, Deer Clan. She seeks to bring greater accountability to technology.

“I’m beginning to frame this idea of AI and ‘human thriving’ and am having conversations with my university, other researchers, and people who are in startups” she explains. “It’s not just about the singular User Experience (UX), but is this technology having a net gain for human thriving? What do we need? We need safe water, healthy air, and a comfortable, safe living environment. We need education, each other, communities, and to trust our governments. We need to trust our schools and our neighbors. And so all of those things are part of human thriving. And I’m trying to think of AI in that way, how it can contribute. If AI isn’t contributing to human thriving. I don’t think we need it.

“Even though I’m working with really complicated systems and interdisciplinary fields that don’t often speak the same language. I try to speak plainly so that I can include all of my different diverse community members and collaborators to expand the conversation.”

“Regenerative architecture makes so much economic sense if you look at the impacts to all of our systems – and not a narrow view of the immediate interest of one. The interests of that one entity will benefit from the thriving of all others. Your investment in the thriving of others comes back to you!”

Amy Failla: “In an ideal future, passive house wouldn’t be really an option anymore. It would just be how we build, a standard. We wouldn’t debate whether it’s better or not, it just is. Also having more products and solutions here in America. A lot of the stuff, we get from Europe. Even windows.”

Thanks to the very smart women and men creatively collaborating in all fields, we can look forward to limitless opportunities for better living.

In the meantime, what is the state of your indoor existence? You can take a deep breath and make it better. Jump on the trend of consumer demand.

“Pollack’s titular hero shines; she’s likable and relatable, an even blend of relatable worries and drama-queen moments…. An endearing, plucky girl endures and overcomes in this absorbing quick read.”
–Kirkus Reviews

Ever since she was in fourth grade – back in 1960 – Amy Meislin Pollack was writing and telling stories about a character named Jelly Bean. She never stopped telling those stories, sharing them with her students over a teaching career that spanned 40+ years. She shared them with her three children when they were younger – and then with her seven grandchildren. Now her stories have been made available to everyone with the recent publishing of two coming-of-age books intended for middle-graders, The Adventures of Jelly Bean and The Further Adventures of Jelly Bean.

“My books touch upon topics of friendship, popularity, death, race, drugs, alcohol, feeling neglected, family issues, and the types of things many kids today are confronting as they look to find their way in an ever-changing world,” says Pollack.

The Adventures of Jelly Bean and The Further Adventures of Jelly Bean are the stories of a fourth-grader who faces challenges that just about all children her age can recognize. Her parents don’t approve of her favorite friend in the whole world. She has trouble getting along with the brother who is closest in age to her. The uncle she loves so much is about to marry the most awful woman she could ever imagine, and the girl who used to be her best friend has turned on her. Jelly Bean faces these and other stumbling blocks, including: the difficulties in achieving and maintaining popularity and how important having certain friends should be to her; difficulties inherent in relationships with various friends and family members; and learning how to make decisions on her own. In these first two books of my middle-grade series, Jelly Bean comes to understand that much of life is trial and error, and that the only constant in life is that it is always changing.

Pollack is available to discuss the following:

Why coming-of-age stories are always needed for children.

What parents can do when they have strong disagreements with their children.

Why some kids need help making friends and dealing with issues of popularity.

The dialogues she hopes to see people launch into as a result of her books.

Solid generational advice that still holds true for our youth confronting challenges.

What parents need to know about raising healthy and successful kids today.

How grandparents and parents can help kids navigate the problems of growing up today.

Why a retired teacher of four decades and a grandma of seven recently took to publishing her middle-grade fiction after developing the story 60 years ago.

About The Adventures of Jelly Bean:

What if the start to your day was falling into the toilet, which caused you to miss your carpool, that in turn caused you to get to school late, that ultimately caused you to miss getting one of the decent parts in the upcoming Thanksgiving play? That is exactly what happens to fourth-grader Jelly. Bean on the day we first meet her. Things only go downhill from there and no one at home seems to have much time for her. Except Roger-Over, her beloved dog.

About The Further Adventures of Jelly Bean:

Jelly Bean in the continuation of her adventures as she seeks solutions to the challenges that confronted her in book 1. Michael, her oldest brother, has dropped out of school and joined the Marines, which usurps much of her parents’ attention. Kylie, the new girl in school, faces a medical emergency. And Jelly Bean is still forbidden from going to her best friend’s house.

She has to decide how to deal with these dilemmas and more. Along the way she learns about love, death, pain, relationships, the difference between right and wrong and the value of friendship. See the world through the eyes of this forthright fourth-grader as she discovers two truths about life – that it is always complicated, and always changing.

5-Star Amazon Reviews:

“Understanding a young girl’s feelings, capturing her mind’s world in a fun, loving way. This debut novel will win the hearts of school children because they will relate, feel heard and laugh along the way.” *****

“I am so glad I was with my grandchildren (11 & 12 years old, boy and girl) when they both read the book! They had planned on sharing the book by reading one chapter then letting the other read one…but they had such trouble giving up the book!! Each chapter simply made them want to continue on!” *****

“Bought this for my 12-year-old granddaughter. She read it easily, and had a good time following the stories. Beautiful, fun illustrations.” *****

Building a Brighter Tomorrow

What began with a book about helping young professionals navigate the ‘corporate jungle’ has evolved into a community coming together to support one another and create positive change for our environment and those affected by the autoimmune disease Lupus.

Drawing on 30 years of experience carving out his path in the corporate jungle, author Chuck Saia wrote YOU GOT THIS, KID! Words of Advice for Young leaders to share his experiences and learnings with young professionals looking to develop the skills needed to build self-confidence, navigate uncertainty and achieve their greatest goals.

Chuck’s passion for mentoring young professionals shines through in his speaking engagements, but it’s his compassion for family, friends, colleagues and every person he connects with that has inspired our foundation’s board to mobilize our mission of inspiring action to reduce toxins in our environment that have a particularly adverse effect on those with autoimmune diseases.

The Saia family has closely witnessed the trials and tribulations the autoimmune disease Lupus can place on a family. Chuck, Allison and their two sons, Ethan and Matthew, have supported Allison’s sister Amy Szoke and her family, through two lupus induced strokes, daily joint pain and fatigue as well as a recent diagnosis of Lupus Nephritis.

The Saia and Szoke families are just two of the thousands of families and millions of people impacted by Lupus in the United States alone. There’s not a cure nor even a trivial understanding of the root cause.

The latest research studies, however, are discovering more about how our environment plays a role in our health. Environmental toxins’ effect on Lupus activity is part of the 2021 Pre-Matriculation program at Quinnipiac University where Professor and YGTK Board member Courtney McGinnis. will be teaching pre-med students about the connectivity. The students will also hear from other board members Amy Szoke and Karin Wagner in a fireside chat discussing the patient provider relationship and their personal journeys with Lupus.

Our foundation’s influence has only just begun, and we welcome you to join us in our journey to drive positive change for young professionals, those affected by Lupus and all of our local communities to make for a brighter tomorrow.

“What started with a book became a community of people coming together to build this foundation and mobilize our mission.”

For some Army Reserve Soldiers, their mission extends beyond land operations. Every day Soldiers take to the skies with careers in aviation and aerial defense. Army Reserve crew members perform a multitude of missions, including transporting troops and personnel, distributing supplies and equipment, directing search and rescue missions, providing combat support, and more in support of the Army’s mission here in the United States and around the world. This National Aviation Week, the Army Reserve commemorates the achievements and innovations of Soldiers in this field.

The Army Reserve has a range of opportunities in the aviation community. Most notably, Army pilots are responsible for flying fixed-wing aircraft, helicopters, and drones. However, careers in Army aviation also include aviation operations specialist, air traffic control, aircraft electricians, helicopter mechanics, aircraft structural repair, and flight paramedics.

It takes a team of highly specialized professionals to make aviation missions successful. The skills and hands-on training Soldiers gain in an Army aviation and aerial defense career can’t be matched anywhere else. Soldiers help defend the nation from above, while also exploring the skies and working with some of the most advanced machines in the world.

Join U.S. Army Reserve Command Aviation Directorate, Fixed Wing Division Chief, Lieutenant Colonel Amy Buck as she discusses the importance of celebrating National Aviation Week and the unique opportunities the Army Reserve offers to Soldiers serving in the aviation community.

Inspiring business book “From Farms to Incubators” puts a spotlight on women leaders of the agricultural technology revolution
“You’ll never think about food and farms the same way again.”
—David Kirkpatrick, Techonomy

April 28 — Climate change, water shortages and an ever-growing global population are making the world’s food supply more precarious than ever, but a new generation of female entrepreneurs is using high technology to secure the future of agriculture, as documented in the new book “From Farms to Incubators: Women Innovators Revolutionizing How Our Food Is Grown” (Craven Street Books, publication date May 4, 2021) by award-winning journalist Amy Wu.

Speaking of the inspiration for her new book, Wu noted, “‘From Farms to Incubators’ strives to document a time in history that captures an intersection when agriculture and technology and the workforce behind it began a shift that will be of value years, decades and generations from now.” “From Farms to Incubators” presents nearly 30 inspiring case studies of how women entrepreneurs from diverse cultural and ethnic backgrounds are meeting the challenge of feeding a global population projected to reach 10 billion by 2050. The women profiled in “From Farms to Incubators” are leaders in using drones, artificial intelligence, sophisticated soil sensors, targeted microbes, data analytics, blockchain and robotics to transform agriculture into the growing field of agtech—the integration of agriculture and technology. “These women are trailblazers in the sectors of agriculture and technology that are traditionally male dominated. Their intelligence, knowledge, creativity and passion for tackling big-impact issues have led to tangible solutions that are helping growers be more successful in producing food for all of us,” said Wu. Agtech has become essential to farm profitability and securing a sustainable food supply, as more agribusiness firms seek out technological solutions to increase productivity and profitability. Women who care about community health, wellness and nutrition are turning toward agribusiness opportunities, and grower families are becoming more likely to pass their land to daughters interested in farming.

Each agribusiness leader profiled in “From Farms to Incubators” tells her own story of how she used agtech innovation to solve specific business problems and succeed. These business cases demonstrate the influence of female innovation, the new technologies applied to agribusiness problems, and the career opportunities young women can find in agribusiness. The women profiled speak frankly on the advantages and drawbacks of technological solutions to agriculture and offer lessons in making technology productive in real work. A must-read book for business leaders, policy makers, and everyone interested in tech innovation, “From Farms to Incubators” offers inspiring role models for young women, a thought-provoking glimpse into the future of food production, and a fascinating investigation of how women leaders are profitably disrupting the world’s oldest industry.

STORIES OF INSPIRATION
During Holiday Season
https://www.hemlibra.com/

In recent years, people with hemophilia A have found hope thanks to important developments in the treatment of this bleeding disorder. For some living with this chronic condition, this may mean experiencing the coming holiday season with a new outlook on living with hemophilia A.

Guy is in his mid-30’s and was diagnosed with hemophilia A at birth. As a child, he experienced spontaneous brain bleeds at 18-months-old and again at three-years-old, which led to him becoming legally blind and experiencing seizures. Guy remembers going to the hospital multiple times a week for treatment and having over 20 surgeries. As a young adult, he avoided certain activities that might lead to a bleed.

Hemophilia A is a rare genetic bleeding disorder, typically diagnosed at a very young age, in which a person’s blood does not clot properly, leading to uncontrolled bleeding that can occur spontaneously. There are approximately 20,000 people who have hemophilia in the United States, with hemophilia A being the most common form.1,2 For people diagnosed with this rare condition, it can be a life-altering diagnosis. Even with treatment, hemophilia A can result in bleeds in muscles and joints that may lead to joint damage and chronic pain.2

People like Guy can face significant challenges managing their condition.3 After decades of accepting this as his normal, he began a different medicine that he takes once a month and has experienced fewer bleeds requiring treatment. Guy recently earned a master’s degree to pursue a career in strategic marketing. He has so much to celebrate this holiday season–it will be particularly special as his first as a newlywed after getting married in a small ceremony this past June.

Dr. Amy Shapiro, a hematologist-oncologist and Co-Founder of the Indiana Hemophilia and Thrombosis Center along with Guy Law, to discuss the impact this latest treatment continues to have for people living with hemophilia A.

The family still runs the farm and sells some of their produce at the www.milk-pail.com in Southampton, NY. Apples have been a staple in the American diet since the settlers first landed at Plymouth Rock. They brought apple seeds, saplings and cuttings with them to establish orchards in the New World. In the 1640s the Halsey family began farming in the Water Mill and Bridgehampton area known as Mecox, named for beautiful Mecox Bay. Today, the owners and founders of The Milk Pail Fresh Market & U-Pick, John and Evelyn Halsey, along with their daughters Amy and Jennifer, are the 11th and 12th generation of Halseys carrying on a farming tradition that began more than 350 years ago. Their family farm and orchard is located on the shores of the same Mecox Bay that attracted the first Halsey settlers.

The Milk Pail Fresh Market began more than 30 years ago. John learned about farming growing up on his father’s Mecox potato farm while Evelyn got her first taste for apple growing from her parents’ apple orchard in Vermont. In 1969 they began a tiny retail store to market their vegetables and sell the milk produced by their cows. They named the store The Milk Pail, since milk was their main product at the time. The following spring they planted their apple orchard and have been perfecting and adding award-winning varieties ever since.
A Farm Family Tradition That Began in the 1640s
Today both Amy and Jennifer continue their family farm tradition in the 21st century.
Amy earned a horticulture and plant science Bachelor’s degree from SUNY Cobleskill in 1994. Her training included an internship in Holland and today she runs her own state-of-the-art greenhouse operation. She grows unique, unusual, & old-favorite plants available in mid May through August; beautiful hardy mum throughout the fall; and amaryllis for the winter holidays. Amy also helps design gardens and custom designs planters.
Jennifer earned a Bachelor of Science degree from Cornell University in 1997, specializing in pomology, the study of growing and marketing fruit. Today Jennifer harvest juicy peaches from her own 1200 peach trees planted at the family farm. Harvest begins in mid July through September. In January 2000 Jennifer was named New York Young Farmer of the Year by the New York State Farm Bureau and proudly represented her state at the national finals held in Texas.
The Halsey family invites you to make their family tradition a part of your family tradition. Visit the Milk Pail Country Store, U-Pick Orchard and enjoy Amy’s Flowers and Jennifer’s juicy peaches.
