Reinforcing the festival’s underlying theme of distinctive collaborations (with pairings such as Bobby McFerrin & Questlove, André Previn & Christian McBride, and Ramsey Lewis with Philip Bailey, among others), Blue Note Jazz Festival will present “Celebrate Ornette: The Music of Ornette Coleman Featuring Denardo Coleman Vibe” in partnership with Celebrate Brooklyn! on June 12 – a free outdoor concert at the Prospect Park Bandshell. Ornette Coleman’s son Denardo Coleman, an outstanding drummer who debuted on record with his father at the age of 10, convenes a deep and surprising lineup of special guests for a long-overdue exploration and celebration of Ornette’s music and spirit, with his own band (Al Macdowell, bass; Tony Falanga, bass; Charles Ellerbe, guitar; Antoine Roney, sax) at the core. Special guests include Afrika Bambaataa, Bill Laswell, Bruce Hornsby, Flea, Geri Allen, Henry Threadgill, James Blood Ulmer, Joe Lovano, and Patti Smith. Additional guests will be announced in the weeks leading up to the performance.

Adding to this year’s outdoor component, Blue Note Jazz Festival will continue its longstanding relationship with City Parks Foundation’s SummerStage program, presenting two double bills in Central Park. These free performances will spotlight four of the most exciting and progressive crossover talents on the scene today: Spanish vocalist Buika and acclaimed vocalist/violinistMarques Toliver on June 22, as well as pianist Jon Batiste and Stay Human and Hypnotic Brass Ensemble on June 29. This marks Buika’s second consecutive year headlining Blue Note Jazz Festival (following her sold out performances at The Town Hall in June 2013 and April 2014 respectively, presented by Blue Note Entertainment Group).

Several prominent festival shows have been added to various Blue Note Entertainment Group venues. Recently confirmed collaborations include: jazz icons Lou Donaldson with Dr. Lonnie Smith (Blue Note Jazz Club, June 10-11); “Sly Reimagined” – a special project with Global Noize interpreting the music of Sly & The Family Stone, featuring Jason Miles, Nona Hendryx,Maya Azucena, Falu, and Cyro Baptista (Highline Ballroom, June 8); and guitarist Fabrizio Sotti & Friends, with Tony Grey, Mino Cinelu, Algebra Blessett, M1 of Dead Prez, and Claudia Acuña, among others (Highline Ballroom, June 4). Rounding out several R&B centric shows at the festival, such as Lalah Hathaway, Ruben Studdard and Oleta Adams, vocalistChrisette Michel will perform at B.B. King Blues Club & Grill on June 27 (produced by Jill Newman Productions). Reggae icon Maxi Priest has been added to B.B. King Blues Club onJune 11 (complementing other festival reggae artists such as Sly & Robbie, Monty Alexander, and Tarrus Riley). Other new partner events include two additional film screenings at IFC Center, featuring a director’s cut of Nelson George‘s Finding the Funk  documentary on June 12 and The Pleasures of Being Out of Step, a documentary profile of legendary jazz writer and civil libertarian Nat Hentoff, June 25 through July 1; four performances at DROM, featuring AbrazOs OrchestrA (June 5), Florencia Gonzalez (June 11), Quantic (June 13), and Pacheco + Annie Chen (June 15); Rockwood Music Hall performances featuring Mark Guiliana’s Beat Music on June 5 and a residency by Glen David Andrews spanning June 11, 18, and 25; George Porter, Jr. & The Runnin’ Pardners at Brooklyn Bowl on June 20; and a performance by Sadao Watanabe at Asia Society on June 25.

Marlee Matlin is an actress and the only hearing impaired performer to win the Academy Award for Best Actress in a Leading Role (“Children of a Lesser God”). She won a Golden Globe award with two additional nominations, and four Emmy nominations. Deaf since she was 18 months old, Marlee  is also a prominent member of the National Association of the Deaf. She currently plays the recurring character Melody Bledsoe on the ABC Family television teen/family drama series Switched at Birth.

The Brooklyn Chamber of Commerce today announced that Hill Country Barbecue Market Brooklyn and Hill Country Chicken Brooklyn has become the 1600th member to join their fast growing organization.

U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) is now accepting applications for the Fiscal Year (FY) 2014 Citizenship and Integration Grant Program, which will provide up to $10 million in funding for citizenship preparation programs in communities across the country. The Citizenship and Integration Grant Program is a competitive grant opportunity for public or non-profit organizations, which promotes immigrant civic integration and prepares permanent residents for citizenship. Applications are due by May 16.

Through the Citizenship and Integration Grant Program, USCIS seeks to expand the availability of high-quality citizenship preparation services by providing grants to organizations that offer both citizenship instruction and naturalization application services to permanent residents. USCIS expects to announce up to 40 grant recipients in September.

Since 2009, USCIS has awarded approximately $33 million through 182 grants to immigrant-serving organizations that have provided citizenship preparation services to more than 78,000 permanent residents in 33 states and the District of Columbia.

Author and Scholar of Islamic Thought and Medieval Philosophy to Give Talk on 

St. Joseph’s College (SJC) is pleased to announce The Dr. Reza Khatib and Georgianna Clifford Khatib Chair in Comparative Religion Sixth Annual Lecture featuring Mehdi Aminrazavi, Ph.D., author and professor of philosophy and religion. His talk, “Shiʻism and the Politics of the Hidden Imam” will be presented on Thursday, April 3 in the Tuohy Hall Auditorium on the Brooklyn Campus and on Thursday, April 10 in the McGann Conference Room on the Long Island Campus. Both lectures will take place at 12:30 p.m. and are free and open to the public.

“Dr. Aminrazavi is a leading scholar on Shiite Islam, Persian culture and Islamic philosophy,” said Dr. Thomas Petriano, SJC professor, Department of Religious Studies. “Based on the course he is presently teaching, ‘Saints, Sufis and Warriors of God: Shi‘ism and Persian Culture,’ his lecture promises to be a timely and informative discussion of Shiite Islam and the influence of its theology on the current culture and politics of Iran. We are fortunate to have him as this year’s Khatib Chair.”

A native of Iran, Dr. Aminrazavi is a professor of classics, philosophy and religion at the University of Mary Washington in Fredericksburg, V.A., who specializes in the areas of eastern religions, Islam and the Middle East, Islamic philosophy and theology, medieval philosophy and philosophy of religion. A member of the editorial board of the Journal of Religious Studies, Cambridge University Press, he has authored and edited numerous books and articles and co-edited the five-volume set, An Anthology of Philosophy in Persia, which was recognized at the 23^rd annual Tehran International Book Fair in 2010 as a superior book in the field of humanities. Dr. Aminrazavi has been the recipient of many national and international awards and accolades for his achievements in the field. He received a Ph.D. in Philosophy of Religion from Temple University after receiving an M.A. in Philosophy and a B.A. in Urban Planning from the University of Washington.

Funded by Dr. Reza Khatib and Mrs. Georgianna Clifford Khatib ’52, the Chair’s purpose is to promote interfaith dialogue, with the study of Islam being an integral part of the initiative. Each spring, through the generosity of Dr. and Mrs. Khatib, the College hosts a noted scholar who lectures, leads faculty discussions and teaches a course to students from both campuses.

“This new direction promises to make WHDC a model organization,” said Kofi A. Boateng, WHDC Executive Director. “By investing for impact, we will be able to make measurable and significant contributions to the lives of the people of West Harlem.”

WHDC is building on the successes of its 2013 grant cycles and addressing the challenges that arose. The first grant cycle in 2013 impacted 300 more people than projected for a total of 12,910. Grant recipients leveraged their awards into $4.4 million in additional funding. The 2013 Cycle 1 grant total was $2 million.

One of the successes of note was a group of CD9 youth who earned honorable mention in the White House’s first student film awards with their oral history project on West Harlem. Another, a literacy program, bucked the trend and had 75 percent of its third grade students pass ELA testing under the Common Core compared to a 20 percent passing rate for minorities in the community.

Other highlights include:

• 243 jobs created so far
• 536 children taking part in educational programming
• 155 residents at risk of losing their home educated on their rights or saved from eviction
• 10,298 residents either educated in the arts or able to see a high-quality performance.

In 2014, WHDC’s funding priorities will shift dollars towards areas of priorities, and to good performers that will help the organization to solve the community’s problems. The priority areas will include education, workforce development, housing and health but while respecting the eight areas of need—which also include arts and culture, historical preservation, transportation and the environment—outlined in Community Benefits Agreement.

WHDC will use these priority areas as guides in its investing for impact while requiring measurable data that show who in Community District 9 is impacted and how. This move allows the organization to apply for big money from the government and foundations that require such measurable proof of impact in the community.

“When WHDC applies for funds, it must demonstrate measurable results. We shall demand no less from our grantees,” said Donald C. Notice, WHDC Board Chair. “This is the only way to tell a collective story of impact.”

• Friday, April 18: Pre-grant application deadline
• Mid May: Grant application invitations to selected organizations
• Monday, June 9: Grant application deadline
• Late July: Grant awards announced
