Last week, I shared a story about flying with my family after ten years of avoiding flights. It was a very personal and somewhat fragile story for me to share publicly. The discussion that followed reveals a deeper question facing the climate movement today: how do we accelerate the phase-out of fossil fuels while still allowing people the freedom to travel, connect, and explore the world? For this trip, we chose a non-fossil alternative by purchasing Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) that matched the flight’s full fossil fuel use. On We Don’t Have Time, the discussion has been constructive, thoughtful, and respectful. Many people have also written very encouraging messages, saying they appreciate that I dare to talk openly about solutions that already exist in aviation, even if they are not yet perfect. On social media, outside our platform, some reactions have been much harsher. There has been strong criticism, and in some cases, personal attacks directed not only at me, but also at my family. That kind of tone does not move the climate conversation forward. At We Don’t Have Time we believe in dialogue. Solving the climate crisis will require many perspectives, honest conversations, and the ability to respectfully disagree while still working toward the same goal. At the same time, the intensity of the reaction tells us something important. When discussions about real solutions create strong emotions, it often means we are touching on one of the defining questions of the transition. Most people who care about the climate agree on the destination. But we do not always agree on the best path to get there. Different people who care deeply about the climate often come to different conclusions about the best path forward. The transition away from fossil fuels is not a simple or black-and-white question. That is exactly why open dialogue matters. So instead of talking past each other, let us ask the question openly. What do you think is the best way forward? 1. Reduce first We should sharply reduce consumption and mobility across society, phase out fossil fuels as fast as possible, and accept major lifestyle changes and sacrifices in the short term. Only once fossil fuels are largely eliminated should we scale technologies that allow higher levels of consumption again. ­ Vote ­ 2. Technology first We should focus primarily on scaling clean technologies as fast as possible. Innovation and markets will replace fossil fuels without requiring major limits on people’s lifestyles. ­ Vote ­ 3. Both together We should phase out fossil fuels while at the same time embracing and scaling non fossil solutions, even if they are not perfect yet. Regulation and innovation should move in parallel. ­ Vote ­ Vote and share your reasoning in the comments. We will publish the results next week. The goal is not that everyone agrees on every step. The goal is that we move forward together toward the same destination: a prosperous and fossil free future where humanity has learned to live within the planetary boundaries. This Debate Didn’t Start Last Week Neste, the world’s leading producer of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF), has started producing SAF at its renewable products refinery in Rotterdam, the Netherlands. The refinery has been modified to enable Neste to produce up to 500,000 tons of SAF per annum. As a result, Neste’s global SAF production capability has increased to 1.5 million tons (around 1.875 billion liters) per annum. Six months ago I wrote an op-ed in Sweden responding to a column celebrating record levels of air travel in Europe. My argument then was simple: the problem is not that people want to travel. The problem is that we still travel on fossil fuels. We don’t need to stop travelling. We need to stop travelling on oil. That requires phasing out fossil fuel subsidies while scaling fossil-free alternatives such as Sustainable Aviation Fuel, e-fuels, and electric aviation. On a longer timescale, however, they have pushed world leaders toward greater investment in energy independence. This latest crisis comes at a unique time for climate diplomacy:  André Corrêa do Lago, following up on commitments made during COP30, has just called for stakeholder contributions to the much anticipated roadmap for a transition away from fossil fuels. It is expected that these contributions will feed directly into the First Conference on Transitioning Away from Fossil Fuels, to be held in Colombia this April. And that’s exactly what they’ve done. After researching potential treatment options Jordan and his family decided to enroll him into a clinical trial for a new treatment for patients with Duchenne muscular dystrophy. The family had so much hope that this could help their son.

Now, Jordan and his family are celebrating the success he’s had in the clinical trial for the treatment which was received Accelerated Approval by the FDA for Duchenne patients who have a specific mutation like Jordan. His mom says it’s been incredible to watch all the positive changes he’s been experiencing, during the four years since he’s been receiving the treatment. Jordan who is now 12-years old, says he tries to make every day the best day ever.

Jordan is one of an estimated 10,000 boys in the U.S. with this rare disease. Early signs of Duchenne include delayed ability to sit, stand or walk. Patients face increasing loss of mobility and by adolescence many require the use of a wheelchair. In teenage years patients begin experiencing problems with heart and lung function that leads to serious, life-threatening complications.

Laura McLinn talks about her son Jordan’s journey and how she and her family approach every day and never gave up hope. She’ll also discuss how she has become an advocate for helping others with Duchenne muscular dystrophy and will offer advice to other parents about options available that can help.

HISTORY
Launched as an environmental event where people could obtain information, get involved, find products, learn about services and be informed and entertained by people who care about the environment. ECOFEST started as a visionary educational program to make this a better world. Twenty two years later it is still going strong, supporting environmental causes and issues. ECOFEST is a cultural and educational environmental festival, free to the public, that is organized and produced by the West Side Cultural Center in New York. In its twenty two year track record, ECOFEST has developed an unequaled base of public and private sector support and is a mainstay on the New York City calendar of events. It has brought thousands of people to the Riverside Park, Damrosch Park at Lincoln Center Plaza, Central Park, Battery Park City the USS Intrepid and now for the 4th year at Times Square, cornerstone of the world.. ECOFEST and its participants benefit from publicity, promotions and extensive advertising, and has always been generously covered and supported by local, regional and national media of all formats since it began.
THE EVENT
A major focus of ECOFEST is conservation of our natural resources and innovative alternative-energy technologies. The SEOTO (Sources of Energy Other Than Oil) Alternative Fuels Display which demonstrates a wide variety of alternative-energy vehicles – ranging from prototypes of solar cars to electric, natural-gas, hybrid, fuel cell and ethanol vehicles already in use by private businesses and many New York City and New York State Agencies. The vehicles stay on display with exciting demonstrations and activities scheduled throughout the day. In addition to the SEOTO Alternative Energy Display, ECOFEST’s regular features include the ECO-FASHION SHOW on the World Solar Stage presenting collections made of 100% organic and recycled material and exhibits focusing in eco products and services, handicrafts, agencies and healthy food. Many children’s eco-activities, health and fitness and NYCACC pet adoptions throughout the day.
ART COMPETITION AND EXHIBIT (in association with UFT/NYCATA)

ECOFEST starts in the beginning of the year with the successful citywide Environmental Arts Program that provides the artwork that is the cover of the program and centerpiece of the annual official ECOFEST poster. The competition is open to all NYC Public Schools and the selection of the winning artwork is made by prestigious artists such as LeRoy Neiman and Peter Max. All honorable mentions and finalists’ artwork is displayed for 3 weeks in a public space in New York. In the past years the exhibit was hosted by the Time Warner Building, the Bloomingdale Library, the Park Central Hotel and most recently the stunning Landmarked Building of the Apple Bank for Savings at West 73rd Street.and Broadway. Since 2011, Peter Max has been the judge with performers and elected officials at the opening.

I retired from the New York State Dept of Education in 2010 where I was a Vocational Rehabilitation Counselor for 29.5 years. I am a Licensed Mental Health Counselor.

I am a Certified United States Bowling Congress Olympic Bowling Coach Bronze Level. I spearheaded the A Different Approach Inter-Generational (participants range in age from 4 yrs to 81 yrs old) Education Facilitation and Bowling Program in 1991. The Program has the largest number of Certified Olympic Bowling Coaches in one Program in the World. We are dedicated to Instilling in our young people respect and understanding of our Senior Citizens while allowing our Seniors to impart their wisdom to the next generation. Promoting fitness, camaraderie, respect and lasting friendships.

The A Different Approach Mayoral Campaign is a very positive Grassroots Campaign. Our aim is Growth of this Great City. Putting an End to the hopelessness and helplessness that has been plaguing our City for far too long!

I Endorse the 5 E’s: Equality, Education, Employment leads to Economic Empowerment.

I am a strong advocate of increasing the Quality of the City’s Educational System. I am very much aware of the fact that it is unacceptable that:
a. four out of ten of our students are dropping out of high school.
b. 80% of those who do graduate require remediation prior to being allowed to take college course for credits.

•Equality: Addressing Awareness, Sensitivity & Inclusion.

•Education: Review and Revamp the NYC School System to Address the deficiencies in the Service Delivery that has resulted in 80% of the graduating seniors have deficits that are so severe that they require remediation prior to being allowed to take regular college classes. That’s 11,000 students who graduate are not prepared: 21st Century Technology or Vocational Training. Main goal will be to further decrease the dropout rate but more so, elevate the preparedness of the Graduates by increasing the skill levels.

•Employment: Prepare Workforce for the Jobs of the 21st Century by including all of the Process Owners: Teachers; Parents; Students; Guidance Counselors; Administrators; as well as Business and Industry (who can not only provide accurate, current Industry needs assessments but Internships {work experience models}). Provide Employment opportunities for the current workforce many of whom are either unemployed or under-employed.

This will result in a dramatic increase in Economic Empowerment.

I am sure that with the implementation of new strategies we can curtail the trend toward prison for our young people that has been negatively impacting the city’s economy as well as the morale of our citizens. We need them paying taxes and F.I.C.A not bail and going to jail.
