Welcome Back

We’re excited to announce Restart Stages—an outdoor performing arts center with 10 outdoor performance and rehearsal spaces—to help kickstart the performing arts sector and New York City’s revival. Restart Stages is part of the Stavros Niarchos Foundation-Lincoln Center Agora Initiative, a collaboration that reimagines and reactivates public space for a new era. Fostering a dynamic environment for artists, community organizations, and audiences, Restart Stages is a welcoming and safe place for live performances, family activities, and civic engagement.

Offering an array of vibrant programming that represents the rich tapestry of the city, Restart Stages will feature events by organizations from across the five boroughs, including Lincoln Center’s resident companies. Audience members can expect free and low-cost events, an outdoor reading room, and a wealth of dedicated family programming. New Yorkers can also participate in a range of civic and community events, including blood drives and food distributions, and Lincoln Center will serve as a designated primary election polling place.

Restart Stages will celebrate the full spectrum of New York City’s artistic talent and create a welcoming home for all of the city’s residents and neighbors to enjoy. It launches on World Health Day, April 7, with a special performance for healthcare workers.

Art is the language without words, the language of that which is not spoken because the silences often express all the forbidden sides of a society that tries to control or standardize everything. That which art manages to share is that which cannot be expressed; that which is not sufficiently understood or digested to be able to be transmitted by words, those little, scrunched up things that are so unidimensional.

Art frees us of the need for speaking that which cannot find a means to be articulated out loud by a being who is ultimately riddled by fears. This makes art the real historian of its time and the oracle who will express its future; as such, it is infinitely precious.

Art is the universal definition of that which is the most profound and the most intimate in man. Whatever the form or materials used, the artist expresses a need to communicate that goes beyond the barriers of nationality, culture or language and shares the soul of humanity in all its splendor and agony.

The Arts express that which cannot be expressed verbally because that which we seek to transmit may not be sufficiently understood or digested to be transmitted by words alone. For all intents and purposes, words are little, unidimensional things compared to music, the visual and performing arts like dance or the theatre.

The Arts free us of the perpetual need for words that may be misunderstood or cannot be spoken out loud by a being who is ultimately riddled by anxiety, damaged egos and fears. This makes Art the undisputed, in depth historian of its time and the oracle who expresses its several possible futures; as such, it is infinitely precious and should be perpetuated as a formal element in education.

Mission
The three main goals of Les Couleurs Charity are to inspire, educate and
empower children who come from underprivileged socio-economic backgrounds
and have very few educational opportunities to thrive. With our CREATE
Program, we give them the tools to unleash their wonderful creative energy,
make them feel empowered and appreciated, and teach them skills that will
create artistic opportunities or careers for them. Children thus inspired
feel and express so much joy and it tremendously helps their overall
cognitive development as well. Our group arts projects make children create
stronger bonds with each other and yet it also enhances their individual
talents and skills. As a result, we strongly believe that our CREATE program
makes a big difference in the lives of those children. Looking at the happy
faces, seeing their art and hearing their stories, makes us feel inspired
every day to continue developing and expanding our mission.

Philosophy
We believe that to achieve a long lasting change and to break a cycle of
poverty we should in children’s education, because they are the future. We
believe in strong local partnerships and understanding the needs of the
communities we serve. We collaborate with local schools, orphanages and
share the best and most efficient practices.

We invest into the training of our local teachers so the can provide better
quality education to the children they work with. Our teachers are trained
by local professionals and become role models and mentors to the most
disadvantaged children. That way we create a cycle of continuous learning
that trickles down from local educated professionals all the way to the most
vulnerable children.

ReelAbilities Film Festival is the largest festival in the US dedicated to promoting awareness and appreciation of the lives, stories and artistic expressions of people with different disabilities.
Initiated in NY in 2007, the festival presents award winning films by and about people with disabilities in multiple locations throughout each hosting city. Post-screening discussions and other engaging programs bring together the community to explore, discuss, embrace, and celebrate the diversity of our shared human experience.

ABOUT US
ReelAbilities Film Festival
ReelAbilities Film Festival was initiated in New York at the JCC Manhattan in 2007, founded by Anita Altman and Isaac Zablocki. The festival was the first of its kind to present a series of award-winning films by, about and for people with disabilities. As the festival progressed, screenings continued to take place at multiple venues across the city and all films are followed by discussions that engage the community in promoting inclusion and celebrating diversity, while providing accessible conditions to match the different needs of our multi-layered society.

ReelAbilities North American Program
In 2012, other cities across the US followed New York’s footsteps by hosting a ReelAbilities Film Festival, starting at Cincinnati, Ohio. Since then, Reelabilities events have been held in over a dozen cities in North America. ReelAbilities events have expanded from the US to Canada and soon – Latin America, and take place in many different forms – film festivals, year round screenings and special programming that goes beyond film. Since its start, ReelAbilities has been consistently receiving an increasing number of outstanding film submissions from across the globe.
The ReelAbilities North America headquarters has recently moved back to the Marlene Meyerson JCC Manhattan in NYC.

Compose a New Theme Song for the Theater’s Signature Program

The Apollo Theater today announced the public phase of a $20 million campaign to extend the institution’s role in fostering artistic innovation and in building appreciation of American culture around the world.  The Apollo has already raised $10 million towards the $20 million goal of its 21^st Century Apollo Campaign with support from the Ford Foundation; Upper Manhattan Empowerment Zone;

Time Warner, Inc.; Citi; the Peter Jay Sharp Foundation; and the Apollo Board of Directors; among others.

The Apollo has initiated a range of new programs that support the work of emerging artists, deepen its engagement with its audiences, and expand the Theater’s reach nationally and internationally.  The 21^st Century Apollo Campaign supports the growth of these initiatives—including the Africa Now! Festival, Apollo Club Harlem, and the institution’s first dance production, James Brown: Get on the Good Foot.

The funds from the 21^st Century Apollo Campaign will be used to sustain and expand the Theater’s programming and also its education and community offerings—including the Uptown Hall series, which presents discussions on cultural and civic issues important to the Harlem community and a range of programs for local school children and families.  The Campaign will also establish a reserve fund that will invest in the development of new artistic and civic programs, ensuring the Apollo remains a vital cultural center and an artistic and economic cornerstone of Harlem and greater New York.

For the first time in its history the Apollo will present an international tour of its original production James Brown: Get on the Good Foot—A Celebration in Dance. An Apollo dance presentation showcasing Brown’s influence on choreography and music, the production includes new works commissioned from choreographers around the globe.  James Brown: Get on the Good Foot is currently touring the U.S. and will begin touring internationally in February 2015, and be presented in cities in Germany, Switzerland, and Luxembourg.  Additional information about the tour will be announced in the coming months.

Additionally, the Apollo Theater’s signature program, Amateur Night, will soon have a new theme song.  Reflecting both the evolution of the show and its enduring relevance as a catalyst for developing and discovering new talent, the Amateur Night Song Competition challenges musicians from across the country to compose a song that captures the vitality of the show that has launched countless legendary artists since 1934—from Ella Fitzgerald in its very first year to recent winners Machine Gun Kelly, NUMBERS, Matthew Hashimoto, Moses Harper,Matthew Whitaker, and Nathan Foley—and continues to be one of the nation’s most important training grounds for performing artists.  The competition is open through February 27, 2014.  The contest’s final winner will be chosen—in Amateur Night tradition—by the cheers and boos of the show’s audience on April 30, 2014.  More about the competition is available at amateurnight.org/song.

“As we ask ourselves the question, ‘What’s next?’ we are so proud to continue expanding the work on our stages beyond the music we’re best known for—to dance, theater, comedy, spoken word, and cultural debate—and to bring this work from our home in Harlem to audiences around the nation and the world,” said Mikki Shepard, the Apollo Theater’s Executive Producer. “The Apollo serves as a home for artists at all points in their careers—a place where some of our greatest artists return time and again to hone their craft, and where audiences discover new talent almost every week.”

The Apollo Theater’s signature program, Amateur Night, is also marking eight decades of launching legends.  The season kick-off edition of the show, held the evening of January 29^th, features special guest Doug E. Fresh and honors artist Chuck Jackson with a plaque on the Apollo’s Walk of Fame.  Mr. Jackson joins Aretha Franklin, Michael Jackson, Smokey Robinson, Gladys Knight, Stevie Wonder, and Chaka Khan, among others.

APOLLO THEATER SPRING GALA

The Apollo Theater’s Annual Spring Gala will be held the evening of Tuesday, June 10, proceeds from which support the nonprofit theater’s year-round programming.  Comedian Wayne Bradywill return as host for the event, which this year, in honor of the Theater’s 80^th anniversary, spotlights eight decades of artistic innovation on the Apollo stage.  BNY Mellon will be honored for its support of the Apollo, with Chairman and CEO Gerald L. Hassell accepting the Theater’s Corporate Award on the company’s behalf.  Apollo Board of Directors Chairman Richard D. Parsons will also be honored for his longstanding service to the Theater.  Legends Natalie Cole, The Isley Brothers, and Smokey Robinson will perform, alongside some of contemporary music’s brightest stars. Additional artists and details will be announced in the coming months.

In the past few seasons, David has led numerous orchestras including the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra, Ensemble Orchestral de Paris, North Czech Philharmonic, Rouse Philharmonic, Bulgarian Opera, Bourgas, and Hungarian Opera, Cluj, in addition to working with some of his generation’s most exciting artists, such as Stefan Jackiw and Time for Three. As a participant in numerous competitions, he has placed in the semi-finals of the Bartok Opera Competition and was the youngest person to pass the preliminary round of the Cadeques Competition in 2008. In addition, Mr. Glover has held positions as the Ansbacher Fellow to the Salzburg Festival, and as Conductor of the Indiana University All-Campus Orchestra. He holds degrees from the University of Georgia and Boston University in violin performance, as well a master’s degree in instrumental conducting from Indiana University, where he was named an Adjunct Lecturer in 2007.

Starting as a violinist, David Glover began to work extensively on conducting in 2005 when he founded and became Artistic Director of L’Orchestra da Camera, Boston. With this orchestra, he led its inaugural two seasons, which included a complete performance of The Marriage of Figaro. Richie Havens was an American folk singer and guitarist.
He is best known for his intense and rhythmic guitar style (often in open tunings), soulful covers of pop and folk songs, and his opening performance at the 1969 Woodstock Festival.

Early life

Born in Brooklyn, Havens was the eldest of nine children.  At an early age, he began organizing his neighborhood friends into street corner doo-wop groups and was performing with the McCrea Gospel Singers at 16.

Early career

At age 20, Havens left Brooklyn, seeking artistic stimulation in Greenwich Village. “I saw the Village as a place to escape to, in order to express yourself”, he recalled. “I had first gone there during the Beatnik days of the 1950s to perform poetry, then I drew portraits for two years and stayed up all night listening to folk music in the clubs. It took a while before I thought of picking up a guitar.”

Havens’ reputation as a solo performer soon spread beyond the Village folk circles. After cutting two records for Douglas Records, he signed on with Bob Dylan‘s manager, Albert Grossman, and landed a record deal with the Verve Forecast label. Verve released Mixed Bag in 1967, which featured tracks such as “Handsome Johnny” (co-written by Havens and future Oscar-winning actor Louis Gossett Jr.), “Follow”, and a cover of Bob Dylan’s “Just Like a Woman“.

Pre-Woodstock rise

By 1969, Havens had released five more albums. Something Else Again (1968) became his first album to hit the Billboard chart and also pulled Mixed Bag back onto the charts. Two of those albums were unauthorized “exploitation albums” released by Douglas Records (or Douglas International): Electric Havens (released June 01, 1968) and Richie Havens Record (1969):

This [Electric Havens] was one of two albums (the other being The Richie Havens Record) comprised of overdubbed solo demos, probably from sometime between 1963-1965, that Havens had done prior to recording for Verve and making his official recording debut. In the late ’60s, as Havens rose to stardom, producer Alan Douglas took the original solo demos and overdubbed them with electric instruments. The albums were pulled from circulation and are hard to find today. The eight-song set is oriented toward the kind of traditional material that he was likely doing in clubs around that time, such as “Oxford Town”, “C. C. Rider”, and “900 Miles From Home” as well as an early Dylan cover, “Boots & Spanish Leather”.

Woodstock: opening act

Havens’ reputation as a live performer earned him widespread notice. His Woodstock appearance proved to be a major turning point in his career. As the festival’s first performer, he held the crowd for nearly three hours (in part because he was told to perform a lengthy set because many artists were delayed in reaching the festival location), and he was called back for several encores. Having run out of tunes, he improvised a song based on the old spiritual “Motherless Child” that became “Freedom”. The subsequent Woodstock movie release helped Havens reach a worldwide audience. He also appeared at the Isle of Wight Festival in late August 1969.

Following the success of his Woodstock performance, Havens started his own record label, Stormy Forest, and released Stonehenge in 1970. Later that year came Alarm Clock, which included the George Harrison-penned hit single, “Here Comes the Sun“. This was Havens’ first album to reach Billboard’s Top 30 Chart. Stormy Forest went on to release four more of his albums: The Great Blind Degree (1971), Live On Stage (1972), Portfolio (1973), and Mixed Bag II (1974). Memorable television appearances included performances on The Ed Sullivan Show and The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson. On the latter program, the audience reacted with such enthusiasm that when the applause continued even after the commercial break, Carson asked Havens to return the following night.

Havens also branched out into acting during the 1970s. He was featured in the original 1972 stage presentation of The Who’s Tommy, and appeared as Othello in the 1974 film Catch My Soul. He also appeared in Greased Lightning alongside Richard Pryor in 1977. In 1987, he landed a role in the Bob Dylan vehicle Hearts of Fire.

Havens increasingly devoted his energies to educating young people about ecological issues. In the mid-1970s, he co-founded the Northwind Undersea Institute, an oceanographic children’s museum on City Island in the Bronx. That, in turn, led to the creation of the Natural Guard, an organization Havens describes as “a way of helping kids learn that they can have a hands-on role in affecting the environment. Children study the land, water, and air in their own communities and see how they can make positive changes from something as simple as planting a garden in an abandoned lot.”. In July of 1978 he also was a featured performer at the Benefit Concert for The Longest Walk, an American Indian spiritual walk from Alcatraz to Washington DC affirming treaty rights, as a result of legislation that had been introduced to abrogate Indian treaties.

1980s–1990s

During the 1980s and 1990s, Havens continued a world touring schedule and a steady release of albums. The release of the 1993 Resume, The Best Of Richie Havens Rhinocollected his late 1960s and early 1970s recordings. In 1982, Havens composed and performed a promotional slogan for NBC‘s 1982-83 television season entitled, We’re NBC, Just Watch Us Now. He also performed slogans for CBS and ABC, and recorded commercials for Amtrak, singing the slogan “There’s something about a train that’s magic.” Havens also has done corporate commercial work for Maxwell House Coffee as well as singing “The Fabric of Our Lives” theme for the cotton industry.

In 1993, Havens performed at the inauguration of President Bill Clinton. Among the selections was the “Cotton” song, made famous by a series of television ads in the early 1990s. In 1999, Havens played at the Tibetan Freedom Concert for an audience of more than 100,000.

Havens also played a small role as a character named Daze in a 1990 film named Street Hunter starring John Leguizamo.

Havens was the twentieth living recipient of the Peace Abbey Courage of Conscience Award, presented in Sherborn, Massachusetts, on April 12, 1991.

In addition to performing at charity benefit concerts, Havens formed the Northwind Undersea Institute, an oceanographic children’s museum on City Island in The Bronx. The museum led to the creation of The Natural Guard, an organization that educates children about the environment.

2000s

In 2000, Havens teamed with the electronic music duo Groove Armada for the retro 1970s-style song, “Hands of Time”. The song was featured on the soundtrack of the film Collateral starring Tom Cruise and Jamie Foxx; the same song was also used in the films Dominostarring Keira Knightley, and Tell No One with François Cluzet. Havens was also featured on “Little By Little” and “Healing” on the band’s third album, Goodbye Country (Hello Nightclub).

In 2000, Havens published They Can’t Hide Us Anymore, an autobiography co-written with Steve Davidowitz. He maintained his status as a folk icon and continued to tour. In 2002, he released Wishing Well, followed by the 2004 album Grace of the Sun.

In 2003, the National Music Council awarded Havens the American Eagle Award for his place as part of America’s musical heritage and for providing “a rare and inspiring voice of eloquence, integrity and social responsibility.”

On October 15, 2006, Havens was inducted into the Long Island Music Hall of Fame.

In 2007, Havens appeared as “Old Man Arvin” in the Todd Haynes film I’m Not There. In a classic front-porch jam scene, he is shown singing the Bob Dylan song “Tombstone Blues” with Marcus Carl Franklin and Tyrone Benskin. Havens’ version of the song also appears on the I’m Not There soundtrack.

Havens was invited to perform at the 2008 Cannes Film Festival opening ceremony. He played “Freedom” in tribute to his fan and jury president, Sean Penn. He also performed at the London, Ontario, Blues Festival in July 2008.

In March 2008, Havens released a new studio album entitled, Nobody Left To Crown. The first single release was the country-tinged “The Key”.

Havens appeared in the acclaimed 2009 film Soundtrack for a Revolution, which provided a general history of the modern Civil Rights Movement, and had modern artists performing many of the era’s musical classics. In the film, Havens performed a haunting rendition of “Will the Circle Be Unbroken”.

On May 3, 2009, Havens performed at the fundraising concert in honor of Pete Seeger‘s 90th birthday. In June 2009, he performed at the fifth annual Mountain Jam Festival. The event, hosted by Allman Brothers Band and Gov’t Mule guitarist Warren Haynes, was held at the Hunter Mountain Ski Resort in Hunter, New York. As is the tradition, the festival took place on the weekend following Memorial Day. On June 20, 2009, Havens performed at the Clearwater Festival. On July 4, 2009, he performed at the Woodstock Tribute festival in Ramsey, New Jersey. On August 8, 2010, he performed at Musikfest 2010 at Foy Hall at Moravian College in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania.

On March 20, 2012, Havens announced on his Facebook page that he would stop touring after 45 years due to health concerns. On April 22, 2013, Earth Day, Havens died of aheart attack at home in Jersey City, New Jersey. He was 72
