Join us as we celebrate the would-be 50th anniversary of Café au Go Go, with original footage of artists performing at the Café in ‘Seven Years Underground: A 60s Tale’ directed by Jason Solomon, son of the original Café owners, Howard and Elly Solomon. A panel discussion will follow about the origination and history of the Café as music venue with David Amram, Terri Thal, Matt Umanov and moderator Ashley Kahn. Following a brief intermission,Steve Cuiffo performs Café alum Lenny Bruce’s material verbatim and in character.David Amram, the “Renaissance Man of American Music” (Boston Globe), was a frequent performer and friend of Café au Go Go since its opening 50 years ago. As a multi-instrumental musician versed in over 35 instruments, he introduced the French horn to jazz (along with Julius Watkins) more than sixty years ago while playing with many of the 1950`s jazz legends, such as Dizzy Gillespie, Charles Mingus, Lionel Hampton and Oscar Pettiford. Some of his other musical collaborators include Bob Dylan, Tito Puente, Pete Seeger, Willie Nelson, Jack Kerouac, Odetta, Leonard Bernstein, Richie Havens, Arthur Miller, Langston Hughes, Joe Papp, Elia Kazan, Antonio Carolos Jobim, Patti Smith, Paddy Chayefsky, Steve Martin, Archibald MacLeish, John McEuen and Johnny Depp. Amram has conducted 75 of the world’s great orchestras, and composed more than 100 orchestral and chamber music works, two operas, 23 Broadway scores, and 21 film scores, including the classic films Splendor in the Grass, The Manchurian Candidate, and Pull My Daisy. He is also a progenitor of international indigenous folk music to America over the past half century and has been referred to as the “Father of World Music.” Amram has authored three books, and has written the forewords to new biographies of Woody Guthrie and Pete Seeger. Andrew Zuckerman’s book and feature film documentary Wisdom: The Greatest Gift One Generation Can Give to Another, features Mr. Amram as one of the World’s 50 Elder Thinkers and Doers. The symphonic live recording of Amram’s composition THIS LAND: Symphonic Variations on a Song by Woody Guthrie, as conducted by David Amram with the Colorado Symphony Orchestra will be released in April 2014, along with the DVD release of Lawrence Kraman’s feature length documentary film, DAVID AMRAM: The First 80 Years. Website: http://david-amram.blogspot.com

Terri Thal was well known in the vibrant Greenwich Village art scene of the 1960s. During that time, she was married to (and managed) Village folk legend Dave Van Ronk, who is the inspiration behind Joel and Ethan Coen’s movie Inside Llewyn Davis. She also managed other folksingers, including Bob Dylan (for a year), the Holy Modal Rounders, Maggie and Terre Roche and Paul Geremia. A recent article Thal wrote on Inside Llewyn Davis generated intense discussion in the music and film worlds about whether the movie accurately reflected the folk music scene of the 60s.

Matt Umanov is the founder of Matt Umanov Guitars on Bleecker Street in Greenwich Village. Since 1965, his store has been a must-visit for any guitarist passing through New York City who can explore his eclectic collection of guitars, amps, pedals, and other accessories. Over the years, Umanov has become equally well known for his deep knowledge of the guitar and the history behind the instrument.

Celebrated performer Steve Cuiffo has immersed himself in the work of Lenny Bruce, delivering sublime, hyper-real, verbatim resurrections of the great American thinker’s monologues. Fifty years after his death, Bruce’s often prophetic, freedom-loving skewering of American culture is as dazzling, hilarious and insightful as ever.

It will feature cash & prizes for competitors in this year’s US Dragon Boat Open Championship.

HKDBF-NY, a multicultural celebration and sporting event, is the largest multicultural Festival in New York and the largest festival of its kind in the U.S. HKDBF NY keeps up the age old tradition of Dragon Boat Racing in colorful, custom made teak boats, which are virtual works of art gliding on water. Custom made by a small coterie of craftsmen in Hong Kong, weighing one ton each, colorfully painted with a Dragon head at the front and Dragon tail at the rear, the boats are piloted by up to 20 crewmen, including 18 paddlers, a drummer and steers person. For twenty-one successful years HKDBF-NY has attracted a diverse, multi-cultural audience of more than 60,000 attendees throughout North America. With more than 180+ well-trained teams, involving more than 2,500 participants competing from across the U.S. and Canada, this year’s festival is expected to be notable in its scale and fierce competition.

With cash & prizes at stake for the US Dragon Boat Open Championships, the festival takes place over two days on the site of the 1964 World’s Fair, featuring events for the entire family. The opening day parade at noon on Saturday, August 4th will be followed by the New York City Championship Races. The U.S. Dragon Boat Open Championship will be held on Sunday, August 5th with the teams vigorously competing for their share of the cash & prizes.

Racing starts at 9:00 a.m. and events last throughout the day until approximately 5:00 p.m. each day, rain or shine. Other festival events consist of the corporate youth, women’s invitational, and sponsors challenge, a photo contest as well as presentations on the VERIZON STAGE of traditional Chinese arts, martial arts demonstrations, the traditional Dragon dance, musical and other diverse performances and demonstrations of folk arts and crafts.

This year we have a very special appearance from the Award winning Lion Dancers from Zhanjian, Guangdong, China. This team is the recipient of China’s last Lion Dancers competition. sponsored by the Chinese Association of Lion Dancers and Dragon Dancing Teams (a division of China’s national Sport Association). They will perform the colorful and exciting Southern style of Lion Dancing.

An ethnic food court and booths staffed by sponsors of the event many of whom will be giving away promotional items, and many community-based organizations participating help make for a unique, action packed, multi-cultural, New York weekend.

The tradition of Dragon Boat Racing is an annual Chinese rite commemorating the idealistic poet and reformer Qu Yuan who drowned himself in the third century B.C. to protest against his emperor’s policies. The locals raced in their boats in an attempt to rescue the poet. To prevent fish and water dragons from eating his body, the locals beat their drums and splashed their paddles. This was the beginning of Dragon Boat Racing.
