The U.S. Army’s World Class Athlete Program (WCAP) is an incredible opportunity for Soldiers to represent the United States in top national and international athletic competitions—including the upcoming Summer Olympics. WCAP Soldiers come from all components of the Army, including the Army Reserve. These athletes are selected for their ability to perform at the highest level of their sports while also serving the country.

US Army Reserve website: https://www.usar.army.mil/

Since its inception, WCAP has helped hundreds of Soldier-athletes achieve their goals and make their Olympic dreams a reality. Soldiers receive specialized coaching and access to state-of-the-art training facilities, sports medicine, and physical therapy to help them perform at their best. Additionally, they earn the same great pay and benefits that come with being in the Army Reserve, including education and professional development support, home loan assistance, and family benefits.

Army Reserve service has a built-in support system for these elite athletes that is impossible to replicate elsewhere. Service helps strengthen Soldiers’ dedication to training, ensuring they are ready for whatever challenges come their way, whether in their career or sport. Soldier-athletes are stronger because of the larger Army team.

Soldier-athletes are among the best in their sport, with a growing medal count (100+) to prove it. Some of the WCAP Sports include:

· Boxing

· Cycling

· Track & Field

· Soccer

· Shooting

· Swimming & many others

Join Army Reserve Captain Sarah Beard as she discusses her experience in the Army Reserve and WCAP competing in 3-Position 50m Rifle and 10m Air Rifle events. In addition to earning multiple international medals over the course of her career, Captain Beard qualified as the 2020 Olympic Team Alternate in 10m Air Rifle and can speak on the once-in-a-lifetime chance to compete for a spot in the Olympic Games.

Hear How Jamie Schanbaum’s Experience Gave Her a New Mission:
Educating Others About Meningitis Vaccination

Para-athlete and GSK spokesperson Jamie Schanbaum understands struggle.
She knows what it’s like to train for the Paralympic Games and channel her pain into perserverance—winning a gold medal at the U.S. Paralympic cycling games. Years before her games, Jamie went through another battle— fighting for her life after contracting meningococcal disease, also known as meningitis.

Jamie was a college sophomore when, in 24 hours, she went from feeling completely healthy to feeling like she had the flu, to being rushed to the emergency room where she found out she had contracted meningitis. Jamie spent seven months in the hospital, ultimately losing both of her legs below the knees, and all of her fingers due to the disease. Although uncommon, meningitis can be a serious illness that can cause life-threatening complications, or even death.[i] Jamie’s athletic fortitude was born out of her fight against meningitis.
Jamie is sharing her story as an advocate for GSK’s public health campaign, “Ask2Bsure” to educate and empower parents of teens and young adults ages 16-23 to start the conversation with their child’s doctor and “Ask2Bsure” they have received vaccination for meningitis B. There are two different types of vaccinations that can help protect against the 5 vaccine-preventable groups of meningitis, and while many colleges require meningitis ACWY vaccination, meningitis B vaccination has only been available since 2014, and most colleges still do not require it.[ii],[iii]

ASK2BSURE.COM

DID YOU KNOW?
• The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends a meningitis B vaccination series for teens and young adults ages 16-23 years (preferred age 16-18 years) on the basis of shared clinical decision making- to help protect against meningitis B.[iv]
• Meningitis is an uncommon, but serious illness that can cause life-threatening complications, or even death.1 Early symptoms of meningitis may be similar to those of the flu, but can progress quickly and can be fatal.[v],[vi]
• Up to 1 in 5 meningitis survivors suffer long-term consequences, such as brain damage, amputations, hearing loss and nervous system problems.[vii] Among those who contract meningitis, 1 in 10 will die, despite treatment, sometimes in as little as 24 hours.2
• Teens and young adults are at an increased risk for contracting meningitis because it can spread through certain common behaviors such as living in close quarters like college dorms, kissing, and sharing drinks or utensils.1
• From 2011 through March 2019, meningitis B caused all US college meningococcal outbreaks, which involved 13 campuses, 50 cases, and 2 deaths among an at-risk population of approximately 253,000 students.[viii]
Although vaccination may not protect all recipients, it is the best way to help prevent meningitis B according to CDC.[ix]

She’ll be join by Dr. Iriny Mary Salib, Pharm D (doctorate in Pharmacy), medical science liaison at GSK.
HEAR HOW ONE COLLEGE STUDENT’S LIFE CHANGED FOREVER AFTER NEARLY DYING FROM A VACCINE-PREVENTABLE DISEASE

Dr. Len Friedland, practicing physician, vaccine researcher and Vice President and Director, Scientific Affairs and Public Health, Vaccines, GSK

Jamie Schanbaum, meningitis survivor, US Para-athlete and GSK spokesperson

BACKGROUND
It’s that time of the school year where teens and young adults are counting down the days to the holidays and a much-needed break from classes. In 2008, Jamie was a college freshman getting ready to complete her first semester and head home for the holidays when her life changed forever. In just 24 hours, she went from being a healthy college student to fighting for her life after contracting meningococcal disease, also known as meningitis. Jamie spent seven months in the hospital, ultimately losing both of her legs below the knees, and all of her fingers due to the disease. While many colleges require MenACWY vaccination, MenB vaccination has only been available since 2014, and most colleges still do not require it. She is sharing her story to ensure that parents are aware there are 2 different types of vaccines to help prevent meningitis – one for MenACWY, and one for MenB, , to help other families avoid her experience. During the pandemic, it’s more important than ever for parents to educate themselves and utilize the vaccines available to help protect their kids against vaccine-preventable diseases they may be at risk for, like meningitis.

DID YOU KNOW?
•	Meningitis is an uncommon, but serious illness that can cause life-threatening complications, or even death. Early symptoms of meningitis may be similar to those of the flu, but can progress quickly and can be fatal, sometimes within 24 hours. ,
•	Up to 1 in 5 meningitis survivors suffer long-term consequences, such as brain damage, amputations, hearing loss and nervous system problems. Among those who contract meningitis, 1 in 10 will die, despite treatment, sometimes in as little as 24 hours.7
•	Teens and young adults are at an increased risk for contracting meningitis because it can spread through certain common behaviors such as living in close quarters like college dorms, kissing, and sharing drinks, utensils, or smoking devices.4,
•	From 2011 through March 2019, meningitis B (MenB) caused all US college meningococcal outbreaks, which involved 13 campuses, 50 cases, and 2 deaths among an at-risk population of approximately 253,000 students.

VACCINATION IS STILL IMPORTANT
•	Even if your college-aged children are not attending in-person classes due to COVID-19 precautions, they may still be at risk for diseases like MenB.4
•	Your teen or young adult may have received MenACWY vaccination when they were younger, but most have not yet received MenB vaccination, which only became available in 2014. Recent CDC data show that still, only about 1 in 5 17-year-olds in the US received at least one dose of MenB vaccination in 2019.12
•	Winter break is a good time to schedule a wellness visit and talk to your child’s doctor about the two different types of vaccines to help prevent meningococcal disease – one for MenACWY and one for MenB.2,3

Here’s the Audio Conversation. https://fccdl.in/9KW1ZvbdNf click the link to listen.
Xiomara Getrouw is an athlete who was born in 1994. She’s a young and upcoming talent in sports. Currently her main focus is on swimming, but she is also very good at running marathons and cycling. Xiomara is a born triathlete. She’s been into sports since age 4. She was inspired by her mother who also was an athlete. My mom has a swim school in Suriname, South America.

Since the start of her career Xiomara has done many impressive things. She won a lot of prices and awards, has many records in her name and her strength is still increasing. Xiomara studied languages at AlphaMax Academy. This is an international private school based in Suriname, a country in South America. After she graduated from AlphaMax Academy she moved to the United States where she’s continuing her study. I study at MCC and graduated in May 2015. I studied liberal arts but focusing on Spanish and Sign Language. Then I moved to North Carolina where I earn a bachelor degree in Interdisciplinary studies focusing on Sport management, communication and as a minor in Spanish.

Xiomara trains on a daily basis and specialized in swimming categories: Back stroke (50m, 100m and 200m) and marathon swimming. The trainings, strength trainings amongst others, are necessary to reach the top. Xiomara is very ambitious and serious about her goals. She wants to participate at the Olympics. With the help of her Surinamese and American coaches, but mostly on her own strength and will power she reached the high level she’s currently at.

Xiomara is the first Surinamese who ever ran a 42 km marathon at age 16 and finished 1st place in her category.

A few of the highlights of Xiomara’s career:

Xiomara participated in Asatt swimming competition in Trinidad and Tobago. She won 5 medals: Gold (800m freestyle and 200m back stroke), silver (50m, 100m backstroke and 400m freestyle) and a 3rdplace most outstanding

She participated in Bigi Broki Waka that is a big bridge run over the Wijdenbosch Bridge it is about 52 meters high (10km) that was on January 2011 and won the 2ndplace inside the category matching her age. She got the 5th place in the overall standings.

In January 2011 Xiomara represented Suriname in the Miami Half Marathon. She was asked to participate by Mr. MacDonald, the manager of the Gazelle organization in Suriname.

In 2011 she also won two medals at the Anthony Nesty open swimming competition: Gold (100m backstroke) and silver (100m freestyle). She won gold (50m back stroke), silver (50m butterfly) and bronze (50m freestyle at the Neptunes Sprint swimming competitions.

Nesty is my inspiration he is the only one for now that won a gold medal for Suriname at the Olympics games in South Korea, Seoul in 1988. And also become the first swimmer with color that won a gold medal at the Olympics Games in Swimming.

In February of 2011 she won the first place within her category at the Olympic distance triathlon (1500m swimming, 40km cycling and 10km running).

In March 2011 at the Long course swimming competitions she won gold (50m, 100m and 200m back stroke), silver (50m butterfly, 100m freestyle and 400m freestyle) and bronze (50m freestyle).

In April 2011 she won the first place in her category at the Oase Sprint Triathlon (750m swimming, 20km cycling and 5km running). Overall she had the 2nd

In April 2011 she also participated in the Dutch Caribbean Invitations swimming competitions in Curaçao where she won gold (50m, 100m and 200m back stroke) and bronze (200m and 800m freestyle)

In August 2011 Xiomara participated at the World Championships Triathlon in Lausanne, Switzerland.

In 2012 she was the winner of the women’s competition of the 38thStaatsolie Swimmarathon, which is the biggest marathon swimming event that is organized every year in Suriname. It is about 18 km which is 8 miles in the Suriname river.

In March 2014 Xiomara broke the MCC (States) school record of backstroke which was set in 1998.

In March 2017 Xiomara became All American on the 100 backstroke at the NAIA championships in the States.

In March 2017 she broke a school record at St. Andrews University in North Carolina on the 50 and the 100 backstroke. She also broke a record on the 200 backstroke at the same university in 2016.

In July 2017 Xiomara swam a new Surinamese national record on the 50m backstroke in Amsterdam, The Netherlands.

In July 2017 Xiomara participated at the 17th FINA World Championship in Budapest, Hungary.

Xiomara has a special interest for the deaf community. She studies American Sign Language and wants to contribute in better communication and getting attention for this subject.

One of the nicest things about Xiomara is that even though she did and reached so much, she still is modest. She is not arrogant and is very grateful for what is granted to her. This “down to earth” approach of her is of her great features and will help her, together with her strength, faith and ambition to reach the top of the world.

To summarize the above it is safe to say that Xiomara Getrouw is an athlete to remember: a multi talent, swimmer, marathon runner and cycler.

Xiomara Getrouw is one of the persons of Surinamese descendant to be very proud of!
