Thank you for watching the incredible J’Accuse movie. The movie is a brilliant documentary that gives a voice to the murdered Jews of Lithuania. The Holocaust in Lithuania resulted in an almost complete annihilation of the Jewish community. More than 95 percent of Lithuania’s Jewish population (approximately 220,000 Jews) were murdered by the Nazis and their Lithuanian collaborators during the War – mostly between June and December of 1941. This was a more complete destruction than befell any other country affected by the Holocaust. A deep and simmering level of antisemitism fueled this destruction in Lithuania – and sadly, it is not unlike the deepening and unbridled antisemitism we are experiencing around the world today.

We invite you to view the Courage and Conviction event on our website that includes Holocaust survivor speaker, Elly Gotz, who is 95 years old and is an incredible speaker. He is a survivor of the Kovno Ghetto and the Dachau concentration camp. He was liberated by Hilbert Margol (another Atlanta connection). Hilbert is a liberator who was with the US Army, Rainbow Division who liberated Dachau on April 29th, 1945. Hilbert lives in Dunwoody and looks forward to celebrating his 100th birthday in February.

Our other speakers – Grant Gochin and Silvia Foti both have incredible stories to tell about their families in Lithuania.

Grant Gochin lost over 100 family members in the Holocaust in Lithuania.

Silvia is a journalist who began writing a book about her grandfather who is held as a Lithuanian War hero – but who she discovered was responsible for the deaths of more than 14,000 Jews in Lithuania. Together they are fighting for justice in Lithuania.

The event includes a riveting and most interesting panel discussion including Grant Gochin, Silvia Foti and film director, Michael Kretzmer.

The panel discussion is moderated by Nadia Bilchik – an Atlanta based television news anchor, keynote speaker and communications specialist.

Each year on July 27th, the U.S. Army celebrates the Army Medicine Anniversary. The Army Reserve is a unique and significant contributor to the Army’s overall medical system. The Army Reserve began as a small corps of medical professionals in 1908 and has evolved into what is now the best trained, best equipped, and most ready Army Reserve in our Nation’s history. Most notably, 55% of all Army operational medical forces reside in the Army Reserve, including two deployable medical commands, the 807th Medical Command (Deployment Support), Salt Lake City, Utah and the 3rd Medical Command (Deployment Support), Atlanta, Georgia.

Today, the U.S. Army Reserve is home to over 60 percent of the total force’s critical care nurses, orthopedic surgeons, emergency physicians and obstetricians. The Army Reserve provides the active Army with 306 medical units.

Many Army Reserve medical Soldiers have skill sets that are honed by their respective civilian jobs, from specialized physicians to surgeons, offering every capability needed in order to deploy and complete medical missions. Good News visited the Rialto Center for the Arts in Atlanta, Georgia and attended an exhibit which included fiddle and accordion playing. The exhibitor also described the differences between French speaking in France compared to “old” French which is spoken in Louisiana. The Cajun two-step and zydeco dances were performed by volunteers and were explained as well. Good News also spoke to a member of a Klezmer music band called “Dark Eyes”.

That’s why the new SHE’S NEXT, Empowered by Visa is announcing a new global initiative in Atlanta to help women entrepreneurs. It’s hoped that having this important event in Atlanta it will draw more attention to challenges facing women entrepreneurs.

Even with this success, a new survey by Visa shows nearly three-quarters of women (73%) report it was difficult to obtain the funding they needed to start their own business. In fact, six in ten (61%) self-fund their business. That’s why the new SHE’S NEXT, Empowered by Visa program is announcing a new global initiative to help women entrepreneurs. USCIS and the City of New York Expand Immigrant Integration Efforts and Support for Aspiring U.S. Citizens

NEW YORK— U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) and the Office of the Mayor of New York City have joined forces to strengthen citizenship education and awareness efforts in the City of New York. The new partnership began today as part of a signed letter of agreement between USCIS Director Léon Rodríguez and New York Mayor Bill de Blasio. The agreement will remain in effect until Dec. 31, 2018.

“USCIS is proud to collaborate with Mayor de Blasio and the Mayor’s Office of Immigrant Affairs in a meaningful community partnership to help permanent residents learn more about citizenship and the naturalization process,” said USCIS Director Léon Rodríguez. “The Statue of Liberty is one of our nation’s greatest symbols of welcome, while the public libraries are the city’s most welcoming resources. Now more than ever, New Yorkers can begin their journey to U.S. citizenship at their local libraries. It is fitting that we sign this agreement with the city so close to Ellis Island, and with its own rich history as a beacon for new Americans.”

New York City and the New York public library systems have supported immigrants for many years; however, this initiative formally establishes “New Americans Corners” in all branches of the Brooklyn Public Library, New York Public Library, and Queens Library systems. These libraries will support permanent residents by offering citizenship and English as a Second Language classes, along with tools and resources to help them prepare for the naturalization interview and test.

“These new, creative partnerships will spread our message far and wide that the City is on the side of new Americans, and we are ready to help immigrants who are eligible to achieve U.S. citizenship,” said Mayor Bill de Blasio. “We know that citizenship opens up opportunities – opportunities to vote, to get a better job, to feel more like a part of the community – and we want to support our immigrant friends and neighbors however we can.”

As the largest city in the United States, New York is home to immigrants from more than 190 countries. Since 2004, more than 1.1 million permanent residents have become U.S. citizens in the New York City metropolitan area.

USCIS and the City of New York also plan to:

Provide citizenship information through the City of New York and public library websites;
Expand community partnerships to hold naturalization information sessions throughout the City of New York;
Offer training on the naturalization process to library staff members; and
Raise public awareness of immigration services scams.

New York is USCIS’ fifth municipal partner, joining Los Angeles, Chicago, the Metropolitan Government of Nashville and Davidson County, and Atlanta.

NEW YORK— El Servicio de Ciudadanía e Inmigración de Estados Unidos (USCIS, por sus siglas en inglés) y la Oficina del Alcalde de la Ciudad de Nueva York han unido esfuerzos para fortalecer esfuerzos relacionados a la educación y concienciación sobre la ciudadanía en la ciudad. El nuevo esfuerzo de colaboración comenzó hoy como parte de la firma de una Carta de Acuerdo de Colaboración entre el Director de USCIS, León Rodríguez y el Alcalde de Nueva York, Bill de Blasio. EL acuerdo permanecerá en vigor hasta el 31 de diciembre de 2018.
