A New Study Reveals How to Fill a Vital Gap In Infant Gut Health
New research is showing that a specific probiotic bacteria is key to restoring a baby’s gut to its protective, natural state and providing a foundation for life-long optimal health.
When babies are born they begin to acquire a collection of bacteria called the microbiome –trillions of microorganisms that co-exist in our bodies and live all over us, on our skin, nose, mouth, eyes and gastrointestinal tract, or gut. Research shows that the infant gut microbiome plays a critical role in healthy immune and metabolic development, as well as meeting babies’ dietary needs.
The bacteria in a baby’s microbiome are passed down from their mom at birth. For generations, one strain called B. infantis dominated the infant gut. However, modern medical practices such as increased antibiotic use and C-sections have led to a microbial imbalance in the infant gut and a loss of this key bacteria. This imbalance has been associated with a range of chronic health issues including allergies, asthma, obesity, type 1 diabetes and a host of immunological disorders.
Now, recently published data shows for the first time that supplementation with activated B. infantis can completely transform the gut environment in babies that are fed breast milk. Along with restoring a healthy gut microbiome, the study results show that the supplementation significantly reduced levels of potentially harmful bacteria linked to disease in infants born either through natural or C-section delivery.
Mark Underwood, M.D., Chief Pediatric Neonatologist at UC Davis discussed the study results and explain how the activated form of this beneficial bacteria can be helpful for babies and about other ways to encourage the health of infants.

As soon as her plane touched down in America, Riley knew she wanted to go back. At the age of 14, Riley started a non-profit, Generation Next, to help collect school supplies for Kenyan schools and returned the following year with 200 backpacks filled with donated supplies.

“I had no idea that God was going to use what happened at that school, with those kids, to begin weaving Africa into the fabric of my story,” says Riley. “God put a love for Kenyan children in my heart and gave me an impulse to want to help them.”

They will teach women to sew, provide a feeding program, a safe house for kids and a sports complex for the kids to play on as well as farming. She and her new husband Graham plan to live part time in Kenya when Graham is finished with college. They will make their home at the community center, to oversee the day to day operations.

Riley Banks is the founder and executive director of Generation Next, a non-profit she established at the age of 14. Generation Next has built and oversees a school in Kibwezi, Kenya, and runs a thrift shop and food pantry in Branson, Missouri, to fund operations. Even though there are more than half a million babies born prematurely every year in the U.S., many parents are not aware of the risks prematurity brings. Moreover, three out of ten mothers with preemies were not aware of the possibility of preterm birth, the leading cause of neonatal death, until they gave birth prematurely. It’s time to raise awareness and educate all parents.

Welcoming a new baby into the world is full of excitement, joy, and many new experiences. Fortunately, most parents are able to bring their healthy newborn babies home from the hospital soon after birth, but parents of premature babies may not be so lucky, as preterm birth can come with complications, often requiring special medical attention.

Nearly half a million babies in the U.S. are born prematurely each year, and although the U.S. has one of the highest rates of preterm birth in the world, a recent survey found that 75 percent of parents don’t know the definition of prematurity (birth at or before 37 weeks gestation). As prematurity disrupts a baby’s development in the womb, preemies often have specialized health needs, and are susceptible to a variety of illnesses, including Respiratory Syncytial Virus, or RSV. As Prematurity Awareness Month gets underway, here is what all parents, especially parents of premature infants, need to know:

•    Preemies have underdeveloped lungs and fewer antibodies, causing them to be at heightened risk for developing severe cases of infections.
•    RSV is a common seasonal virus, typically occurring November through March, and causes mild to moderate cold-like symptoms in healthy, full-term babies, but can potentially develop into severe RSV disease in preemies.
•    RSV is the leading cause of infant hospitalization for babies during their first year of life, but surprisingly, one-third of mothers have never heard of the virus.
•    There is no treatment for RSV disease once it’s contracted, so it’s important for parents to know specific prevention methods to protect their children.

Dr. Gregory Sysyn (Neonatologist at the Pediatrix Medical Group, Atlanta, GA) and Crystal Diehl (prematurity advocate and mother of two preemies) will provide essential information about prematurity and RSV to help educate all parents.

March of Dimes Presents $1 Million Grant in Honor of Kmart Fundraising Milestone

Hoffman Estates, Ill. (April 11, 2012) – In one of the most significant fundraising achievements by one company for a singular cause, Kmart announced it has reached the $100 million fundraising milestone in support of March of Dimes. After nearly three decades of charitable giving by its customers and associates, March of Dimes will recognize Kmart for its fundraising efforts with a $1 million grant in honor of the retailer for transdisciplinary research into premature birth. The grant will help fund clinical studies with scientists from different fields working together to investigate areas including maternal genetic biomarkers, placental function and genetics, and the patterns of preterm births in the U.S., among others.

As part of Kmart’s ongoing commitment to children’s health and wellness, the retailer will collaborate with March of Dimes for the 29th consecutive year to raise funds to help improve the health of babies by preventing birth defects, premature birth and infant mortality.

“We are delighted to have reached such a remarkable fundraising milestone, with $100 million raised, to help improve the health of babies tomorrow,” said Lou D’Ambrosio, CEO and president, Sears Holdings. “Our associates and customers have proven the very principle on which March of Dimes was founded—that many people giving a little can make a tremendous impact. But, we can’t stop here. We challenge everyone to contribute in some way today, one small act of kindness, because together we can make an enormous difference.”

As the March of Dimes’ longest-standing corporate supporter, the two organizations have helped achieve a six percent decline According to March of Dimes. in the premature birth rate, yet more than 1,400 babies are born prematurely every day. The event featured speeches from Deidra Merriwether, SVP, Chief Operating Officer – Sears and Kmart formats, Dr. Jennifer Howse, President, March of Dimes and Kristina Theiss Manganiello, a mother of premature twins, who shared her inspiring story. The event also included 100 moms and dads who represent those who have been helped by the $100 million raised by Kmart and countless babies who have benefitted.

For the 20th consecutive year, Kmart also is a national sponsor for the annual March for Babies® walks, which will take place this spring in 900 communities across the country. This year, March of Dimes anticipates that more than seven million people will walk to raise money and awareness to give hope to the more than half a million babies born too soon each year. Since 1970, the March for Babies has raised $2 billion to benefit all babies.
