Many Millennial-aged People with Multiple Sclerosis Put Their Own Health Challenges on the Back Burner, Not Fully Understanding the Implications of Proactively Managing their Condition
It’s no secret that the millennial generation embraces wellness and has helped bring health-mindedness to the forefront of pop culture today. But when it comes to taking care of more serious health challenges, many experts are noticing people in their 20’s or 30’s are approaching healthcare differently and often prioritizing “living their best lives” over thinking about their health.
For younger people with serious health issues, putting off talking to a doctor or not getting on an effective therapy after the diagnosis of a chronic disease can have irreversible implications in the long-term. This is especially true with chronic conditions like multiple sclerosis (MS), the most common debilitating, progressive disease, which affects one million U.S. adults – striking in the “prime of life” when people are starting careers and families, and eventually leading to irreversible physical disability for many people. With the average age of onset at 34, most people newly diagnosed with MS over the next 10 to 15 years will be millennial-aged people (ages ~22-39).
According to the National MS Society many people newly diagnosed with MS react with shock and denial, often leading to them not taking proactive steps to manage their disease or connect with the broader MS community. It is important for millennial-aged people to be proactive in their care and pursue early treatment to slow disability progression as they are at an age and point in their disease when a disease-modifying therapy may offer greater impact.
Channing Barker, a millennial-aged person living with MS, who will shed light on her experience of living with MS and working with her doctor to take control of her health. Anne Gilbert, Director of Programs at Can Do MS, a national MS advocacy group known for their work with younger people living with MS, will also share her perspectives on the need to better connect with and support this younger generation of people living with MS.

WHAT’S AT THE HEART OF A DECISION FOR PATIENTS WHO MAY NEED STENTS?
Understanding the right questions to ask about stents can have a meaningful impact on patient health

In the last 20 years, treatment options have proven so commonplace and effective in treating coronary artery disease (CAD), the most common type of heart disease, that many patients spend little time asking doctors about treatment advances and benefits. They instead limit their questions to economic or logistical matters, but what they should be asking is how quickly they can get back to their daily lives.

In fact, a recent Harris survey showed that most Americans have little information about stents until they develop CAD. So what are the other questions that patients should be
asking? What are the latest developments in stent technology? What benefits do these advances offer patients? Who are the best candidates?

Knowing the right questions to ask proved to be of special significance for CAD patient Shawna Dukes. A combination of active research and persistence with doctors enabled Shawna to ask the right questions, which ultimately saved her life. After consulting with a number of physicians who could not determine the cause of her extreme fatigue and overall discomfort, she finally found answers from her interventional cardiologist. He determined that getting a stent that promotes faster healing was the right treatment option for her, and one that gave her back control of her health again.

Shawna is just one of the more than 15 million Americans affected by CAD.[i] For the many others affected by CAD, understanding advances in stent technology can be the first step in becoming an active, knowledgeable advocate for your health.

Shawna and her interventional cardiologist Dr. Colin Barker of Houston Methodist Hospital shared their personal experience, provide an overview of this evolution in stent technology, and helped to answer the toughest questions surrounding the role of stents.

He shares his Good News about presenting and World Peace, and his family. Nigel has been a force for new ideas in the worlds of fashion, beauty and entertainment for the past 20 years. He is internationally renowned for his photography and his creative presence in all areas of the fashion, beauty and entertainment industries has been stylized by an array of fascinating projects. Nigel’s work has included commercials, spokesperson roles, books, photograph exhibitions, international editorial assignments and the creation of his own show, The Shot on VH1. As a filmmaker his projects have highlighted some of our world’s most pressing issues with documentaries such as Dreams Are Not Forgotten, which he directed and produced, earning the Film Heals award from the Manhattan Film Festival. Mr. Barker published his first and much anticipated book, Nigel Barker’s Beauty Equation, in 2010 which is being developed into a skincare and cosmetics lines designed to get women “Camera Ready.” After 17 seasons as the judge on the hit show, America’s Next Top Model, Barker is now the host on the Oxygen Network’s The Face, alongside Naomi Campbell, premiering its second season in March 2014.

Barker’s unique position as photographer, filmmaker, philanthropist, author and father has secured him highly visible spokesperson positions for prominent global brands including Avis, Microsoft, Sony, Crest White Strips, and Nine West. In 2010, Nigel appeared alongside Justin Timberlake and Peyton Manning in Sony’s national ad campaign. He has also lent his personality to television and feature film cameos, as well as event hosting and presenting, including the 2007, 2008 and 2010 Emmys. As well as being an ambassador for the UN Foundation’s Girl Up initiative he is a spokesperson and Ambassador for the Make A Wish Foundation,ASPCA, and The Elizabeth Glaser Pediatric AIDS Foundation.
