Book Synopsis

“Grandma’s Hands” is a timeless, universal song originally featured on Bill Withers’ 1971 album, Just As I Am. With soulful lyrics, the song captures the significant impact that Withers’ grandmother had on his life as a child. Multiple award-winning artist R. Gregory Christie has brought the iconic song to life through vibrant illustrations, painting a tender portrait of Bill’s grandmother. Through the illustrations, readers are transported back in time to experience the comfort, security, and unconditional love that he found in his grandmother’s hands. A heartwarming tribute to the enduring bond between grandmothers and their grandchildren, “Grandma’s Hands” represents how the simple acts of care and affection during childhood can leave an indelible mark for a lifetime.

Called Peripheral Artery Disease (PAD), When Advanced, It’s the Leading Cause of Amputations Worldwide
and Results in High Rates of Fatal and Non-Fatal Cardiovascular Events2,3
Peripheral artery disease (PAD) is a common chronic circulatory condition that often goes undiagnosed and undertreated.1 In fact, PAD impacts an estimated 20 million Americans,4 yet only 8.5 million are diagnosed.5 If left untreated, PAD can increase the risk of serious health outcomes such as heart attack, stroke, acute limb ischemia or even a lower limb amputation.6 Despite being largely preventable, amputations can be a devastating complication of PAD associated with high mortality.3
Earlier this year, the American Heart Association (AHA) issued a charge to reduce nontraumatic lower-extremity amputations by 20% by 2030. Despite a steady decline in the rate of amputations in two previous decades, the amputation rate among patients with peripheral artery disease (PAD) and diabetes – the patient group among the highest risk for lower extremity amputations – increased by 50% over a span of only six years (from 2009 to 2015) and the rate of amputations continues to rise in the U.S.3
Further, significant health disparities exist in the prevalence, diagnosis and care of patients with PAD. For example, Black Americans – who have a higher prevalence of asymptomatic PAD, less access to quality vascular care,6 and are at risk for delays in care8 – are up to 4x more likely to have an amputation as a result of PAD compared to White Americans.3
Serious outcomes, including lower-extremity amputation, cannot be effectively prevented if its leading cause, PAD, is not diagnosed and managed.6 By elevating PAD awareness and increasing access to screening and treatment, both patients and physicians can be empowered to better understand the symptoms of PAD, seek care at the optimal time, and have the right conversations at their visits to help reduce the chance of serious outcomes.5
Dr. Geoffrey Barnes, cardiologist, vascular medicine specialist, and faculty member at the University of Michigan Frankel Cardiovascular Center and Institute for Healthcare Policy and Innovation, to discuss the importance of early identification, intervention and management of PAD.

Everyone knew Olga was a princess, even if one of her own devising. Princess Olga is her fictional memoir. Olga, beginning at age 97, dreams of her childhood in Port of Spain, untangling a family mystery of political intrigue: why her Venezuelan family, living in luxury, fled Trinidad for Harlem in 1924.

Olga was named, she claimed, in 1913, by and for a real Russian Princess:Princess Olga, sister of the reigning Tsar Nicholas. Olga, a babe in arms, was onboard ship going from Margarita, Venezuela to Port of Spain in the Crown Colony of Trinidad.

Port of Spain was where Olga first learned her power as Princess.

Except when she is ushered out of bed, or to the dining room table, Olga, beginning at age 97, dreams back to her childhood in Port of Spain. Her family was intimately connected to the Venezuelan regime; her uncle was its Consul General in Trinidad; her father worked for the dictatorship in the gold fields of Amazonas and most of his brothers worked for the regime, as well. In her dreams, she untangles a mystery of political intrigue and why her family fled Trinidad. She discovers the important part she played, causing her family, living in luxury, to abandon Port of Spain for Harlem in 1924.

She then dreams of her arrival in New York, and of her eventual triumph in her new country: a scholarship to Mount Holyoke, marriage into an old literary family, (Hawthorne and Smyth) but, until she receives a steamer trunk full of cash, she is still connected to the regime in Venezuela.

Princess Olga: Uncovering My Headstrong Mother’s Venezuelan Connection was published on December 8, 2017.

Hardback and paperback copies are available and may be ordered at all book retail venues, including Amazon and Barnes & Noble. E-books are also available.

honors General David Howell Petraeus. Part Two. (Note: We ran out of tape, but we have the end of his philosophical comment in text)

‘I’ll keep in mind a Cautionary tale of young schoolboy who gave a report about Julius Caesar: he was a great general, he won some important battles, he made a long speech, they killed him.” – I will try to avoid Caeser’s fate this evening.

“Addressing such eminent company in this great city with this great organization, one can almost begin to feel a little bit important- thankfully I have plenty of experiences from early days in the army to keep that impulse in check…

One episode in particular- I was fresh out of West point, a new second lieutenant, out with my new platoon for the first time, we’d a long day and we didn’t crawl into our sleeping bags until just before midnight. I’d only been asleep for an hour or so, when my platoon sergeant, a Wise old airborne veteran elbowed me and woke me up, “Sir Look up and tell me what you see.” So I looked up at a beautiful night sky and I told him, “I see a million stars, platoon sergeant” — And what does that tell you sir?” he asked. I wasn’t quite sure what he was getting at, so I thought about it for a moment and then gave an answer I thought was truly indicative of a keen intellect. “…Well (there’s) millions of galaxies and potentially billions of planets. Theologically it tells me that God Is great and we are but small and insignificant. Meteorologically, it tells me that we’re going to enjoy a beautiful day for training tomorrow.

There was a long pause as my platoon sergeant considered this obviously weighty answer. He seemed to be speechless in fact after that impressive response.

So I finally asked him, “What does it tell you, platoon sergeant?”

“Well sir, it tells me, that’s somebody stole our tent.”

“While Americans may debate being for or against various endeavors undertaken by our government, it is heartening that virtually all our citizens agree on one political point, that we should all support those who put themselves in harms way to serve our country.”

I was privileged to serve in some tough places during my final decade in particular. —

Founded in 1919
“Serving Those Who Have Served Their Country”
Mission
“To promote the general welfare of men and women of the Armed Forces of the United States and its Allies, and their families, by maintaining and offering club and lodging rooms”
In 1919, Mrs. Cornelia Barnes Rogers and Mrs. Theodore Roosevelt, Jr. with General John J. Pershing founded The Soldiers’ and Sailors’ Club. In war and peace, without any U.S. Government funding and supported solely by donations of patriotic Citizens, it has ever since been a “Home Away From Home” for over 2,500,00 men and women of the Armed Forces and their families. We have exisited now for over ninety years with our warm, friendly, and safe enviroment providing hospitality and accommodations for 15,000 Armed Forces personnel annually.
With the continued help of our patriotic friends, it always will be.
