More than four out of five C-Suite executives agree that they need to be more accountable on human sustainability issues in their companies, and an even higher proportion want their compensation tied to human sustainability metrics, as they face increasing pressure from stakeholders and anticipate benefits from improvements in workforce well-being, according to a new study released by global professional services firm Deloitte.

With rising human sustainability challenges, the study indicated that companies are facing a series of risks on these issues, including employee retention at both the worker and executive levels, with 59% of workers and 71% of C-suite respondents reporting that they would seriously consider taking a job with another company that would support their well-being. Notably, 80% of executives said that they would be more likely to accept a job at a company advancing human sustainability, and 61% saying that they would even accept a pay cut to do so.

P3O ensures Army Reserve Soldiers are succeeding in their civilian careers which directly benefits the Army and the Nation by bringing substantial value and depth to the force. All around the world, people are planting tiny forests full of native plants on plots of land as small as a tennis court. These tiny forests — also called pocket forests, mini forests, and, in the U.K., “wee” forests — are based on principles developed in the 1970s by a Japanese botanist named Akira Miyawaki.

When I first heard about the Miyawaki forest being planted by middle-schoolers in California, I was amazed. “The reason we are planting the Miyawaki forests and using the Miyawaki method is to address climate change,” teacher Neelam Patil explained. By densely planting these small plots with native trees and shrubs, the competition between these plants for sunlight means that nearly a century’s worth of growth can be achieved in just a few decades.

Greening urban areas carries a host of benefits. These dense tiny forests cool their surrounding area, mitigating the urban heat island effect. The trees also filter pollution from the air, soak up floodwaters during heavy downpours, and provide a rich habitat for local wildlife. Because they’re so dense, these forests store more carbon than conventionally farmed trees would. And, as fifth-grader Lydia says here, “When I look at it, I feel very proud and I am happy that I’m helping the world.” That’s six wins!

Over 3000 projects around the world have already been created using Miyawaki’s methods, according to the British nonprofit Creating Tomorrow’s Forests. In Canada, six mini forests were planted last year while Amman, Jordan already has five mini forests and another in the works. Work on a new one on New York City’s small Roosevelt Island will begin this spring and an elementary schoolin McAllen, Texas is also getting one soon.

I love kittens – but even our cats Dr. Evil and Mr. Jekyll (pictured above) agree that a world with a longer, more active kitten season isn’t good for anyone.

Feral cats are typically most fertile when it’s warm out, and unfortunately, each year kitten season seems to be starting earlier and ending later. This means more kittens for already overloaded shelters, more feral cats, and more threats to biodiversity. One study estimated that outdoor, mostly unhomed, cats kill between 1 to 4 billion birds and 6 to 22 billion small mammals in the U.S. alone every year.

As you might guess, climate change – with its milder winters and earlier springtime – is likely responsible. Milder winters may mean more food, and so cats start mating earlier in the year than they have in the past. “No animal is going to breed unless they can survive,” says Christopher Lepczyk, an ecologist at Auburn University who studies free-ranging cats. Milder winters mean that last year’s kittens may survive in larger numbers, too. “I would argue that temperature really matters,” Lepczyk said.

And animal shelters cannot keep up. The Humane Society of America already likens each kitten season to a “natural disaster.” “As the population continues to explode, how do we address all these little lives that need our help?” asks Ann Dunn, director of Oakland Animal Services. “We’re giving this everything we have.”

The taxation of Social Security began in 1984, following the enactment of Amendments in 1983, which President Reagan signed into law. Under that law, up to 50% of Social Security benefits could be added to taxable income, provided the taxpayer’s total income exceeded certain thresholds.

Some States Tax Social Security for Retirees

To worsen financial matters for retirees depending on Social Security to make ends meet, some states impose their own state income taxes on benefits. Fortunately, there aren’t nearly as many states that impose their own tax on Social Security as those that don’t.

“The list of states that do not tax Social Security is much longer than those that do,” said Brian Kuhn CFP, CLU, SVP and financial advisor at Wealth Enhancement Group. “And each state makes its own rules, which sometimes change, including, recently, in Missouri and Nebraska.”

Both Missouri and Nebraska have decided to stop taxing Social Security benefits in 2024.

Kuhn pointed out that you can calculate how much you’re saving on taxes — assuming you live in a state that does not tax Social Security benefits — by looking up the effective rate of tax you paid to your state for all taxed income sources and applying that to your total Social Security benefits.

“So, for example, if your effective rate in your state was 5%, and you received $30,000 in Social Security benefits, that would be a savings of $1,500,” Kuhn said.

From a big picture perspective, the amount saved among retirees who are not taxed on Social Security benefits by their state of residence is quite impressive.

“In Missouri, for instance, retirees are looking at a collective annual saving of around $309 million,” said Jeff Rose, CFP, founder of Good Financial Cents. “Over in Nebraska, it’s about $17 million. That’s a lot of money that retirees get to keep in their pockets instead of it being drained away by state taxes.”

Today is Earth Day, but we all know that every day is Earth Day and we also want to focus on World Water Day which was March 22, and our associate Phil Sauers helped to create this UN World Water Day back in 1993. The Good News is that Billions care about MOTHER EARTH and are living a life in respect. 

Let’s take a moment in Prayer and Pray that the Minute of Silence that Ringo will Request for Peace remains forever, May Peace Prevail on Earth.

b.  1.4 million people die annually and 74 million will have their lives shortened by diseases related to poor water, sanitation and hygiene. (WHO 2022)

International Day of Education on January 24, The UPS Store – one of the world’s largest franchisors – will announce it has collected over $1.6 million for its CSR program, Start Small, Grow Big. Benefitting Junior Achievement USA, the program addresses how nearly three-in-four teens (75%) would be likely to consider becoming an entrepreneur. Both Junior Achievement and The UPS Store understand that prioritizing education is the first step to teens developing the skills they need to become the next generation of leaders.
Since the start of the program last August, customers across The UPS Store network of 5,100+ locations have raised more than $1.6M to date. The program benefits local communities by providing K-12 students with lessons in financial literacy, work and career readiness and entrepreneurship to prepare them for their professional futures.
