On Wednesday evening, February 12, 2014, family, friends and artists will come together to celebrate the life of and to pay tribute to SID BERNSTEIN, the legendary promoter also known as “the man who brought The Beatles to America” and “The Father of the British Invasion” at The Cutting Room, 44 East 32 Street, New York City.  This one-night only event is the only official memorial tribute to Sid, sanctioned by The Bernstein Family and presented by Sid Bernstein Presents…

Sid, who passed away on August 21, 2013 at the age of 95, helped shape the careers of some of the greatest and most popular celebrities of our time. As a visionary, he was the very first impresario to organize rock concerts at sports stadiums (Shea and Forest Hills Stadiums), was the first to stage a rock show in an arena setting – at Madison Square Garden – and was also the first white promoter at The Apollo Theatre.

If it were not for Sid’s persistent overseas phone calls to Brian Epstein in 1963 to discuss bringing The Beatles to America, the music industry as we know it today might have been totally different.  An agreement on a simple “handshake”    across the pond, changed the music industry forever.  Even the formidable Ed Sullivan sought Sid’s advice as he was skeptical about booking them on his show several days before the historic shows Sid was promoting at Carnegie Hall on February 12, 1964.

Sid not only single-handedly brought The Beatles to America, he also brought us The (Young) Rascals and also promoted or managed many more notable artists including Tony Bennett, The Rolling Stones, Fats Domino, Tito Puente, Judy Garland, Frank Sinatra, Jimi Hendrix, Laura Branigan, Sly & the Family Stone, The Dave Clark Five, The Kinks, The Moody Blues, Herman’s Hermits, Eric Burdon and The Animals, Gerry and the Pacemakers, Blood, Sweat & Tears, The Blues Project, Miles Davis, Ray Charles, and many others.  Sid also alternated featured acts at the Paramount and booked such artists as James Brown, Sam Cooke, the Four Seasons, Ruby & the Romantics, Rufus Thomas, Leslie Gore, King Curtis, Bobby Rydell, Terry Stafford and Diane Renay.

In a yet to be released documentary on the life and career of Sid Bernstein, produced and directed by Jason Ressler and Evan Strome, James Brown noted that in the 1960s, Sid was the only impresario booking black entertainment and thus, according to Brown, Sid “was in the forefront of race relations.”  In addition, the audience will hear directly from Sid, in his taped interviews from this classic documentary, about the conversations he had with Brian Epstein regarding the booking of the Carnegie Hall shows and the engagements of The Beatles at Shea Stadium, and more.

At age 93, Sid recorded and released his first and only CD of songs near and dear to his heart, “Sid Bernstein Presents” along with singer/composer Deirdre Broderick.  On this CD, Sid (and Ms. Broderick) sing such memorable songs as Imagine, La Vie En Rose, Crying, It’s All In The Game, and more.

The evening is being produced by Sid’s long-term representative and talent associate, Joseph Gargano, and will highlight many of Sid’s pioneering accomplishments as an Agent, Promoter and Manager in celebration of the 50^th anniversary of The Beatles’ historic first concerts at Carnegie Hall.  Music reflecting the acts which Sid had promoted and developed in the early to mid-1960s will be performed by a variety of talented artists near and dear to Sid, whom he and his creative associates promoted and guided in his later years (in the mid-2000’s), featuring: Deirdre Broderick, Bob Bisaccia, David Ippolito, Larry Russell’s BeatleStock and The Myles Mancuso Band.

This will be a night to remember and an evening of sincere tribute and love, of the kind Sid shared with all he knew and met along the path of his life’s journey.

Sid Bernstein was a legend for Peace before Woodstock.  Only on Faith he brought the group The Beatles to America.  The rest is history.  Sid lives forever in our soul.  We are humbled by him and he has taught us so much.  Our Peace Day Party is dedicated to Impresario Sid Bernstein.

Sid Bernstein (born August 12, 1918) is an American music producer and promoter. Bernstein changed the American music scene in the 1960s by bringing The Rolling Stones, Herman’s Hermits, The Moody Blues, The Kinks and The Beatles to America. He was the first impresario to organize rock concerts at sports stadiums.

Biography

Sid Bernstein was born in New York City in 1918. During World War II, he served in France.

Impresario career

Bernstein helped start the British Invasion by bringing The Beatles over to the United States from Britain. They played at Carnegie Hall after their appearance on the Ed Sullivan Show. Bernstein also booked them at Shea Stadium, a concert that Bernstein described as “inaudible.” During the Beatles Shea concert, Bernstein had the phrase “The Rascals are coming!” displayed on the Shea Stadium scoreboard. “I had met the Rascals in the summer of ’65; I put their name up on the scoreboard (at Shea) – ‘The Rascals are coming! The Rascals are coming!’ A lot of people who hadn’t seen pictures of them thought they were a black group. I sensed something big about them.”

He worked with the Rascals for five years, helping along their rise from obscurity, changing their name from “Young Rascals” to “the Rascals” in an attempt to avoid controversy.

Bernstein also organized concerts for Lenny Kravitz, Frank Sinatra, Jimi Hendrix, Laura Branigan, and Sly & the Family Stone. In 1964, he brought many Israeli singers to the United States for their first major concerts, among them Shoshana Damari, Shaike Ophir and Yaffa Yarkoni, who appeared at Carnegie Hall a year after the Beatles.

Bernstein was the first to stage a rock show at Madison Square Garden.

Sid Bernstein Presents…

Sid Bernstein is also the subject of Sid Bernstein Presents…, a documentary film set for completion in 2010 that details his storied career and life. Sid Bernstein Presents… made its world premiere at the DocNZ film festival in Auckland, New Zealand in February 2010.

In a world of conglomerates, our long term survival as an independent company has been based on the ability to make quick, savvy decisions over many decades. Through four generations, we’ve always been able to adapt to new innovations and challenges, and have strived to maintain very close relationships with our clients and songwriters.”

Incorporated in 1913 (but with roots dating back to the 1890’s), the company began publishing out of offices on Manhattan’s West 28th Street, better known as Tin Pan Alley, in the age of ragtime and vaudeville. The founding partners, Louis Bernstein and Maurice Shapiro, teamed up with composer, Harry Von Tilzer, fresh on the heels of his first hit song, “My Old New Hampshire Home.”

In the years that followed, the company went through many changes and partners before Louis Bernstein, Maurice’s brother-in-law, took over the business after his untimely death in 1911. The name was restored to Shapiro Bernstein & Co., Inc. and that year the company had its first major hit with “Trail of the Lonesome Pine.”

Louis Bernstein went on to become a founding member of ASCAP and serve as its Vice-President for 26 years. During the formative years of the modern music industry, Shapiro Bernstein was a consistently outspoken advocate for the rights of the creative community, engaging as a plaintiff in several landmark cases still cited by specialists in copyright law.

The company was able to adapt to the changing industry of the 1930’s, utilizing favorite bands of the Swing Era, emerging jazz stars, and Hollywood movie musicals to popularize songs that are now considered American classics. Benny Goodman launched “The Glory of Love”; Gene Autry performed “You’re The Only Star (In My Blue Heaven)” in three of his films; and Tommy Dorsey launched “In the Blue of the Evening,” sung by a young man named Frank Sinatra. In 1940, Glenn Miller debuted “In the Mood” – which spent 12 weeks at #1 and became perhaps the best-known dance song in American history.

At the close of the 1940’s, Shapiro Bernstein ushered in the era of rock ‘n’ roll with the ground-breaking “Guitar Boogie” by Arthur Smith, and followed it with Fifties and Sixties pop standards like “Cry,” “Papa Loves Mambo,” and “Harlem Nocturne.” When Louis’ son-in-law Dick Voltter took the reins of the company in 1962, he continued to expand the diversity of their catalog, securing rights to and eventually purchasing the Columbia Pictures catalog acquiring score classics like The Guns of Navarone, The Bridge on the River Kwai, and Lawrence of Arabia.

Seeing an opportunity in the emerging country music market, the grandson-in-law of Louis Bernstein, Leon Brettler, formed Painted Desert Music and opened a Nashville office in the early 1960’s. It was a move that paid off quickly and continues to pay, yielding hits like “Wolverton Mountain” and the Johnny Cash all-time country classic, “Ring of Fire,” penned by his wife-to-be, June Carter and his best friend, Merle Kilgore.

Today Shapiro Bernstein remains a current leader in the world of independent music publishing and continues to publish songs that top the charts. They actively court new writers and expose their current hit makers to the public and the industry.

Under the leadership of Michael Brettler, who became president in 2000, Shapiro Bernstein is committed to continuing in its long tradition: “I am proud to be at the helm of such an iconic music company which has maintained its role in developing and championing music writers for 100 years.
