Dr. Vargas is a neurologist and headache specialist and Associate Vice President of US Medical Affairs for Neuroscience at Lilly who completed his undergraduate and medical school education at the University of Arizona. He served as a United States Air Force flight surgeon, completed his residency in neurology at New York University and completed his headache medicine fellowship at the Mayo Clinic in Arizona where he remained for several years before moving his practice to Dallas and UT Southwestern. Bert has been with Lilly since January 2020 based in Indianapolis.

Bert will be included in the SMT to provide information about migraine as a neurological disease and serve as a subject matter expert about understanding when migraine is having too much of an impact on the quality of life and why it’s important for patients to talk to their doctors about migraine prevention.

Kellie is a 51-year-old mother of five and grandmother of 12, who has experienced migraine for over 25 years. This debilitating disease has prevented her from being fully present in life’s milestone moments, including ball games with her grandchildren, wedding preparations with her children and time spent outdoors with her husband. She found an injectable preventive migraine treatment that works for her and has allowed her to get back to life without frequent migraine attacks.

Kellie will be available for the SMT to share her personal journey living with migraine and how it has impacted her life, as well as her experience with preventing migraines after talking to her doctor about the true impact that the disease was having on her life.

Campus Coach Lines President and Founder Bert Askwith, Honored by ABA Board of Directors
The American Bus Association Board of Directors honored longtime motorcoach owner/operator and
industry legend Bert Askwith at its spring board meeting May 2 in suburban Washington, D.C. The
presentation was made by ABA Chairman Tom JeBran to salute Askwith for nearly 85 years of
continuous service to the motorcoach industry.

In March, Bert turned 102, celebrating his birthday by going to work in Manhattan where he is President of Campus Coach Lines. Bert founded Campus Coach Lines in 1928 while he was a student at the University of Michigan, taking classmates from Ann Arbor to the east coast at a fraction of the cost of rail travel. The company was so successful that he put himself through college with the money he earned. In 1931, while the Great Depression weakened the economy; Bert moved the business to New York City where it continues operations today, 83 years later.

During his long and distinguished career, Bert has served in a variety of high-profile national and
regional industry leadership positions, including a nearly 20-year tenure on ABA’s Board of Directors.
In 2010 the Board made him an honorary lifetime member. Bert also served as the first Chairman of
the ABA Foundation Board of Governors and continues his service to the ABA Foundation as
Chairman Emeritus. Bert also served for six years as the President of the New York State Bus
Association.

Bert is also known for his generous charitable contributions. Among his favorite charities are the
United Way and his beloved University of Michigan in Ann Arbor.

In typical fashion, Bert is always looking ahead, and as he accepted the award, he told his colleagues,
“Thank you for this honor, I am looking forward to working with you for many more years.” ABA Board Chairman Tom JeBran said of his longtime friendship and associate.

Sesame Street

Back in 2009 a show we love turned 40, we thought we would share their Good News once again, since the show and company is as good as ever.  Paul

The preschool educational television program Sesame Street has aired on public broadcasting television stations since its premiere on November 10, 1969. Featuring Jim Henson’s Muppets, animation, live shorts, humor, and celebrity appearances, it was the first television program of its kind to base its contents and production values on laboratory and formative research, and the first to include a curriculum “detailed or stated in terms of measurable

outcomes”. Initial responses to the show included adulatory reviews, some controversy, and high ratings. By its 40th anniversary in 2009, Sesame Street was broadcast in over 120 countries, and 20 independent international versions had been produced.

The show was conceived in 1966 during discussions between television producer Joan Ganz Cooney and Carnegie Corporation vice president Lloyd Morrisett. Their goal was to create a children’s television show that would “master the addictive qualities of television and do something good with them”,^[3] such as helping young children prepare for school. After two years of research, the newly formed Children’s Television Workshop (CTW) received a combined grant of $8 million from the Carnegie Corporation, the Ford Foundation, and the U.S. federal government to create and produce a new children’s television show.

By the show’s tenth anniversary in 1979, nine million American children under the age of six were watching Sesame Street daily, and several studies showed it was having a positive educational impact. The cast and crew expanded during this time, including the hiring of women in the crew and additional minorities in the cast. In 1981, the federal government withdrew its funding, so the CTW turned to other sources, such as its magazine division, book royalties, product licensing, and foreign income. During the 1980s, Sesame Street‘s curriculum expanded to include more affective topics such as relationships, ethics, and emotions. Many of the show’s storylines were taken from the experiences of its writing staff, cast, and crew, most notably the death of Will Lee—who played Mr. Hooper—and the marriage of Luis and Maria.

In recent decades, Sesame Street has faced societal and economic challenges, including changes in the viewing habits of young children, more competition from other shows, the development of cable television, and a drop in ratings. After the turn of the 21st century, the show made major structural adaptations, including changing its traditional magazine format to a narrative format. Due to the popularity of the Muppet Elmo, the show incorporated a popular segment known as “Elmo’s World”. Sesame Street has won eight Grammys and over a hundred Emmys in its history—more than any other children’s show.

The park also has special relationships with a number of children’s organizations in the area, including the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia, St. Mary Medical Center Pediatric Emergency Unit, and Variety – the children’s charity.
