Largest Student-Led Organization Tackles Food Waste to Feed Hungry Families at San Francisco’s Biggest Tailgate Party

San Francisco, CA – As excitement builds for the Big Game in Santa Clara, local tailgate parties are set to take center stage. Among the festivities, Food Recovery Network (FRN) sees these events as vital opportunities to combat hunger in our communities. At Guy Fieri’s Flavortown Tailgate, Hellmann’s Mayonnaise and FRN will work together to ensure that no surplus food goes to waste, benefiting families in need in the Bay Area.

For the third consecutive year, Hellmann’s is partnering with FRN—which has recovered surplus food from the Big Game for multiple years—to rescue high-quality food from Big Game tailgates and redirect it to communities in need.

“We’re proud to partner once again with Food Recovery Network to make food recovery part of the Big Game experience,” said Jessica Grigoriou, Senior Vice President of Condiments Marketing in North America, Unilever. “By rescuing high-quality surplus food from events like Guy Fieri’s Flavortown Tailgate and inspiring people to see the value in their own leftovers, we’re showing how small actions can add up to real impact—because good food should be enjoyed, not wasted.”

Last year, FRN achieved remarkable success during the Big Game, recovering 12,348 pounds of surplus food from two Hellmann’s-supported recovery events in one day, equating to approximately 10,290 meals that were provided to the New Orleans Mission. The recovery included high-value items such as seafood, chicken, and butter—essential ingredients that significantly impact local organizations fighting hunger.

This year, FRN is ready to make an even larger impact in the Bay Area. FRN staff, alongside dedicated students and alumni from the University of San Francisco, Cal Poly, San Francisco State University, and Case Western Reserve, will be on-site at Guy Fieri’s Flavortown Tailgate. All recovered food will be donated to the Delancey Street Foundation and Samaritan House, vital resources for people experiencing food insecurity in the area.

Regina Harmon, CEO of Food Recovery Network, expressed her gratitude, stating, “Hellmann’s has been unwavering in their support of our food recovery efforts over the past three years and in our mission to raise awareness about preventing food waste. Their partnership has been instrumental in our efforts to recover high-quality surplus food, enabling us to help local families experiencing hunger. FRN’s commitment to large-scale food recovery extends beyond the festivities of the football game. A recent partnership with Gaylord Hotels in Washington, D.C., and San Diego has resulted in over 100,000 pounds of food saved over the last few years. Ryan Verhulst, Hotel Manager at Gaylord National, stated, “Food recovery is essential to reaching our sustainability goals. As part of the Marriott family, we emphasize nurturing our world and reducing our environmental footprint. This includes decreasing our food waste and increasing our contribution to our community. If the planet is getting warmer, why is it so cold this winter?

The seeming contradiction comes up often when talking to Judah Cohen, a research scientist at M.I.T. who has been studying how global warming might also be causing colder winters in the eastern United States.

The idea, explained Dr. Cohen, is that a warming Arctic can cause a high-altitude ribbon of air called the polar vortex to stretch and wobble. That wobble can affect the flow of the jet stream that controls much of the atmospheric conditions over the United States, causing waves of high and low pressure that affect our daily weather.

For weeks, a mass of frigid air over the North Pole has dipped into eastern North America, bringing record cold temperatures for a prolonged period. In the West, a ridge of warm, dry air has stalled for weeks, panicking ski resort operators and prompting concerns for communities that rely on a healthy snowpack for drinking water in the summer months.

The polar vortex stretched and wobbled in February 2021, causing a prolonged deep freeze that killed 248 people in Texas and knocked out power for millions. The same wobble reappeared in the winter of 2024-2025 and again last month, causing blizzard conditions across the East and an icy blast.

Dr. Cohen expects the grip of cold temperatures to continue throughout February.

“It’s weird what’s going on now in the stratosphere,” Dr. Cohen said. “These stretching events happen every winter, but just how the pattern is stuck is really remarkable.”

Climate warming in the Arctic is causing this disruption of the polar vortex, Dr. Cohen said. With more snowfall in Siberia and melting sea ice in the Barents and Kara seas, just north of Norway and Russia, the ocean is feeding more heat into the atmosphere, setting up a weather pattern that leads to a burst of extreme cold in North America.

Dr. Cohen cowrote a study in the journal Science last year that linked the stretching of the polar vortex to more frequent severe winter weather in the United States in the past decade. A new analysis by Dr. Cohen and colleagues finds that a warming Arctic is also making the wobble in the polar vortex last longer.

“This is very consistent with this winter,” he said.

Not all scientists agree.

“These are interesting ideas,” said Russell Blackport, a research scientist at Environment and Climate Change Canada. “But I’m very skeptical. When I look at these papers, they’re often not that convincing.”

Compelling climate narratives in television shows and movies can help shift attitudes on climate change, a new study finds! Over a thousand participants were recruited, and researchers divided them into two groups. Half watched a climate-focused episode of Madam Secretary about a super typhoon menacing the Pacific Island nation of Nauru. The other half watched another episode of the same show about U.S. involvement in the Middle East.

People who watched the climate episode experienced “a substantial increase” in their level of concern about climate change and their support for government action. Researchers found this change persisted even two weeks after people watched the episode.

Good Energy (started by my friend Anna Jane Joyner) has a simple test for movies and TV shows to see if they’re talking about climate change. First, does climate change exist in the story world? And second, is a character aware of it?

For a long time, the answer was usually “no” – but that’s changing now. The fifth-annual Hollywood Climate Summit wrapped up this week, where creators of all stripes came together to talk about how to best include climate in their plot lines. Darius Harrison, also known by his stage name as “DEEZLE”, is an American record producer,[1] rapper and singer.

He was born and raised in New Orleans, Louisiana. Deezle has garnered many industry accolades for his creative works—including co-producing Lil Wayne’s hit single “Lollipop“, which lead to a grammy win alongside Jim Jonsin.^[2] From this, Deezle’s credits, music contributions, and numerous artistic collaborations expanded significantly. This included co-authoring Drake’s hit “In My Feelings,” engineering Chris Brown‘s single “Gimme That” & “Graffiti,” producing Lil Wayne‘s hit album “Tha Carter III,” as well as sharing a co-producing credit with Kanye West on “Let the Beat Build.” Ever since his start as a producer, engineer and artist in the music industry, he has sold over seventy-five million records. New Orleans-born saxophonist 2022 NEA Jazz Master Big Chief Donald
Harrison Jr. is a musician/composer whom master musicians consider a master
of every era of jazz, soul, funk, and a composer of orchestral classical music. He
is also a genius, according to geniuses like Eddie Palmieri and Mike Clark. His
alma mater, The Berklee College of Music, awarded him an Honorary Doctorate
in 2021. In the HBO drama Treme, Emmy-winning director David Simon
created two characters to portray how Harrison innovated new styles of music.
He appeared as an actor/musician in nine episodes of “Treme,” in Oscar-winning
director Johnathon Demme’s film “Rachel Getting Married,” in Spike Lee’s
“When The Levee’s Broke” documentary, and Marvel’s “Luke Cage.” This
talented artist is the recognized Big Chief of Congo Square in Afro-New Orleans
culture and was Chiefted in 2019 by Queen Diambi Kabatusuila from the
Democratic Republic of Congo, Africa.

Harrison honed his experiences playing with Roy Haynes, Art Blakey, Eddie
Palmieri, Dr. John, Lena Horne, Dr. Eddie Henderson, Miles Davis, McCoy
Tyner, Dr. Lonnie Smith, Ron Carter, Billy Cobham, Chuck Loeb, The
Headhunters, hip-hop legends Digable Planets, Guru’s Jazzmatazz, The
Notorious BIG, and The Chicago Symphony Orchestra. He has performed with
over 200 jazz masters and innovated three influential styles of jazz. At nineteen,
Harrison created a modern jazz take on the New Orleans second-line tradition
and introduced his composition, New York Second-Line, to the jazz world in
1979. By the mid-80s, he created Nouveau Swing, a distinctive sound that
blended the swing beat of modern jazz with hip-hop, funk, and soul music. In the
’90s, Harrison recorded hits in the smooth jazz genre. He began exploring music

Thanks to the Puglia in Rosé Association, in collaboration with the Puglia Region, New York anticipates a three-day marathon to promote the quality and sustainability of Apulian products.

The slogan? “Eat Well, Feel Wonderful “

“Eat Well, Feel Wonderful.” This is the core concept of the all-Apulian event that will take place in New York on November 15, 16, and 17 during the Italian Cuisine Week in the World, now in its eighth year. The three-day celebration is dedicated entirely to “Mangiare Bene e Sentirsi in Forma” “Eating well and Feeling great,” a simple yet impactful slogan that the Puglia Region and its Department of Agriculture are promoting abroad to emphasize how the excellent quality, combined with the sustainability of exported agri-food products, is a key point for personal wellbeing and, consequently, for society as a whole.

This theme of wellness is particularly poignant in America, especially in New York, where American and International consumers are continually searching for good products that can reduce diseases related to cholesterol, obesity, or hypertension and be the right ingredients for a lifestyle that promotes health, wellbeing, and sustainability.

Bringing together the “big names in Apulian food and wine” – Casillo Group, Gioiella, Frantoio Muraglia, Granoro, and the wines represented by the Puglia in Rosé association, including Vespa Vignaioli’s wines – American food bloggers and New York wellness experts will have the opportunity, during the three different events, to not only learn about the products of Apulian excellence but especially the characteristics that make these products highly digestible, healthy, and sustainable without compromising taste. In short, the secret of the New Sustainable Apulian Diet respecting tradition, innovation, and the United Nations Agenda 2030 goals on environment and sustainability.

Details of the 3 events

The first leg of this three-day event will see the Italian General Consulate at 690 Park Avenue host the opening conference. In addition to the host, General Consul Fabrizio Di Michele, who will welcome guests, attendees will include the Director of the Italian Trade Agency (ITA) Giovanni Mafodda, the Director of the Puglia Region’s Department of Agriculture, Gianluca Nardone, and the President of the CxRA Cuisine Experiences Restaurant Associates – Compass Group, Dean Martinus. Television journalist Francesca Di Matteo will moderate the panel discussion, which will be followed by a buffet where guests will have the opportunity to taste and experience the sustainable diet of Puglia, and its spirit of eating well and healthily. In the select choice of wines from the Puglia in Rosé association, the wines of Vespa Vignaioli’s Winery will stand out, cultivated with sustainable methods, preserving biodiversity, and reducing environmental impact.

The second leg, on November 16, features the MasterClass – Pizza Lab at San Matteo Pizzeria on the Upper East Side. The lab’s focus will be directly on the products and environmental consciousness in production practices: “Le Speciali” flour and semolina from Molino Casillo, which include the wheat germ and thus are highly digestible; Gioiella’s burrata, mozzarella and stracciatella with 100% Italian organic milk; Frantoio Muraglia’s EVO oil with its organoleptic qualities; and Granoro’s “glyphosate-free” pasta produced with 100% Apulian wheat.

The third and final leg takes place at the CxRA headquarters with an exclusive selection of guests and the involvement of the Beverage Manager of RA, a multinational catering services provider at prestigious locations like MoMA, the Morgan Library, the Guggenheim, and New York’s Lincoln Center. Here, among industry experts, four Italian chefs will perform in a live lab to impart to 15 American executive chefs the philosophies and techniques of sustainable Apulian cooking, thus promoting tradition, innovation, and culinary sustainability.

A moderare la tavola rotonda, la giornalista televisiva Francesca Di Matteo. Seconda tappa, il 16 novembre, con la MasterClass – Pizza Lab nella pizzeria San Matteo nell’Upper East Side. Al centro del laboratorio direttamente i prodotti e la coscienza ambientale nelle pratiche di produzione: “Le Speciali” ossia la farina e la semola di Molino Casillo, che incorporano il germe di grano e quindi altamente digeribili; la burrata, la mozzarella e la stracciatella di Gioiella con latte 100% italiano bio; l’olio EVO di Frantoio Muraglia con le sue qualità organolettiche; la pasta di Granoro “senza glifosfato” prodotta con il grano 100% pugliese.

Terza e ultima tappa, nella sede centrale di CxRA con una selezione esclusiva degli ospiti e il coinvolgimento di Beverage Manager di RA, multinazionale che fornisce servizi di catering in prestigiose location come il MoMA, la Morgan Library, il Guggenheim e il Lincoln Center di New York.
