Help Keep Kids and Teens Engaged in Learning as Social Distancing Continues

Learning loss is a real issue every summer, but in the unprecedented era of COVID-19, many students already began the summer at an educational disadvantage. As schools closed their doors weeks ahead of time, students completed the school year at home, relying on virtual classrooms and take-home work.

The digital divide made it a lot harder for some children to complete school work, especially those from low-income and minority households, who may not have reliable internet access. In homes where parents did not have the choice of tele-work, older children may have needed to care for their younger siblings so parents could work, making it even harder to do school work under already challenging circumstances.

Now there’s concern over how to keep kids engaged in learning this summer. Research finds children typically fall behind academically each summer, losing about two months’ worth of math skills during the summer. Low-income youth lose more than two months’ worth of reading skills, while their middle-class peers make slight gains.[1] Unchecked, summer learning losses can cause disadvantaged kids to fall behind and possibly jeopardize their chances of graduating from high school.

Public schools and some afterschool programs like Boys & Girls Clubs may remain closed this summer to prevent the spread of the virus, and that means students have lost an important lifeline – a place to connect with friends and teachers, work on their social and emotional skills (which help kids achieve success in areas like academics, arts, leadership and service) and access a typical learning experience. In this segment, parents can take some valuable cues and gain advice to help their kids from a youth development expert from Boys & Girls Clubs of America.

July 6 -11 has been designated as national Summer Learning Week, the perfect time to hear from Chrissy Chen, the Senior Director of Youth Development Programs at Boys & Girls Clubs of America. She’ll discuss how parents can learn some important tips to keep kids and teens learning during summer, especially due to the changes that happened during this recent school year due to COVID-19. She’ll also explain what the important tools are to make sure young people don’t experience summer learning loss while also building their social and emotional skills so they can prepare for the new school year — and life beyond the pandemic.

This year, nearly three million young people will graduate from high schools across the United States. Many will continue their education, while others will begin pursuing careers. In both cases, they will be required to make many of their own decisions which will have financial implications and directly impact on their ability to become independent.

Junior Achievement’s and The Allstate Foundation’s annual Teens and Personal Finance Survey provides a snapshot of teens’ behaviors and attitudes around money management. It examines how teens view the importance of effective spending, saving and budgeting—and their opinions around how well they are executing those tasks. The key findings illustrate a teen population that is more optimistic now than in past years about its financial future, yet faces challenges related to effectively managing its money.

Jack Kosakowski, president and CEO of Junior Achievement, will discuss key findings of the survey along with tips for parents on how to make their teenagers smarter about personal finance.

While Changing the Lives & Futures of Millions of Young People Nationwide

The Boys & Girls Clubs of America Calls Attention to Critical Issues Facing Young People with Nationwide “Day For Kids” events in September.

Learn How This Day Can Change the lives of Millions of America’s Kids, including those in your community.

Some of the latest statistics about children in the U.S. show deeply troubling numbers. Throughout the country, kids are facing serious issues, such as lack of supervision, poverty and obesity, which can deprive them of a happy and healthy childhood.  As a result, many young people are facing a tough uphill battle to find success at home, at school, and ultimately, in adulthood.

National Statistics Today Show:

•         15.1 million school-age children are home without adult supervision after school every day

•         One in five children live in poverty

•         One in four high school students fail to graduate each year

•         Nearly 4,400 juveniles will be arrested every day

•         One-third of American children are obese or overweight

But, one day can change this trajectory and put them on the path to a great future. For many at-risk youth, that’s the day they enter a Boys & Girls Club to get the needed resources and support to help them develop into productive adults.

To elevate these critical issues facing youth in our country, Boys & Girls Clubs of America is leading a nationwide initiative called Day For Kids, which seeks to engage adults to advocate for youth and make a difference through one-day events at Boys & Girls Clubs nationwide. Throughout the month of September, Boys & Girls Clubs around the country will host local Day for Kids events where adults can participate in fun activities from childhood to elevate awareness of the obstacles these young people must overcome and support kids in local communities.

On Friday, September 6, Lorene Jackson, National VP, Program Training and Youth Development Services at Boys & Girls Clubs of America will be available to talk about the impact Day For Kids is expected to have on millions of families. She’ll also discuss how teaming up with friends, colleagues and kids to compete in a fun field day of activities can show kids everywhere that adults do care about them and the event can help teach children to acquire strong character skills to become responsible and productive adults.

I am proud to share that since Eco Boys and Girls inception at the esteemed Liberty Science Center three years ago, we have taken many strides around the world to promote the importance of environmental education. Most recently, we have been developing a 6 volume book series for Pre K to 3rd grade that is being promoted by the National Education Association.

On Earth Day 2013 a reading of our first book “Meet The Eco Boys and Girls”, alongside Dr. Seuss’s “The Lorax”, were both featured as part of the NEA’s Read Across America Program for their significance towards earth stewardship.

This past weekend, the Brooklyn Children’s Museum hosted a reading event with interactive activities.

In addition to the books, we are currently working on expanding through various digital media platforms, ebooks, apps, tv/web series, while continuing to work with major organizations on global partnerships such as the NEA and Friends of the United Nations and having been cited by the Environmental Protection Agency and Association of Science and Technology Centers in the past, we continue to develop those important partnerships.

Our goal with our original characters and content is to entertain, educate and inspire youth and families to “take action” for our planet in peril.

Our mission is to engage them to be aware of and stay connected to each other and the earth, while empowering them to take ownership of our planet. Each character promotes their individual missions.

Ernie Earth preserves the natural world and its ecosystem; Lulu Love demonstrates loving relationships between humans and all things;Patsy Peace solves conflicts so that humans, animals and things can exist in peaceful ways; Ray Recycle shows people ways to reuse and recycle and Sammy Sun spreads the word about conservation and protecting our natural resources.

Additionally, we are moving forward with our other two brands focused on sustainability  and interconnectedness.  

EcoBrands encourages sustainable fashion and educated consumerism and Peacearth promotes sustainable peace through art and media. We are building distribution channels through digital platforms as well as working with global institutions to spread the message.
