BP ADAMS CELEBRATES RAMADAN WITH MUSLIM BROOKLYNITES

BROOKLYN, NY, July 17, 2015: Today, Brooklyn Borough President Eric L. Adams joined Muslim Brooklynites in celebrating Eid al-Fitr, marking the end of the holy month of Ramadan. Last Thursday, he hosted an Iftar dinner in the courtroom of Brooklyn Borough Hall to break the daily Ramadan fast with over a hundred Muslim Brooklynites, including local religious leaders and ambassadors from Middle Eastern and Asian nations; over twenty-five area mosques and cultural organizations sponsored the celebration, which recognized a number of community members for their advocacy and support of issues affecting Muslim-Americans. Borough President Adams emphasized the importance of highlighting the borough’s religious diversity and strengthening interfaith ties.

“Our Muslim brothers and sisters are valued members of One Brooklyn, and we honor their commitment to faith and charity in this holy month of Ramadan,” said Borough President Adams. “Observances such as these are important times to celebrate our diversity and learn from each other’s traditions, embracing all that unites us. The desires to advance one’s ability to reflect inward and maintain self-control are not only intrinsic to Ramadan, but are universal aspirations. I hope this Ramadan was a positive spiritual opportunity, shared with family and friends, for all who practice. Eid Mubarak!”

Brooklyn Borough President Eric L. BP ADAMS PRESENTS HISTORIC BATTLE-SCARRED BROOKLYN FLAG TO LOCAL VETERANS MARCHING IN AMERICA’S PARADE

Today, Brooklyn Borough President Eric L. Adams presented a group of local veterans, including representatives of the United War Veterans Council, American Legion, Veterans of Foreign Wars, Vietnam Veterans of America, Marine Corps League, and student veterans from Operation Enduring Freedom and Operation Iraqi Freedom, with a battle-scarred Brooklyn flag carried into the Persian Gulf War, as part of a ceremony honoring the veteran community. The group will march with this flag down Fifth Avenue in Manhattan during America’s Parade, produced by the United War Veterans Council, on Veterans Day, taking place on Tuesday, November 11^th.

“The spirit of One Brooklyn, along with the support and solidarity of its residents, was carried into battle through the flag that now stands proudly in Brooklyn Borough Hall as a tribute to the bravery of those men and women who brought it safely home,” said Borough President Adams. “Now, it will once more be carried into service, this time by veterans who have bravely served our nation and are justly honored for their service and their sacrifice. I am honored to take part in this small gesture of our borough’s everlasting appreciation for our veteran community, and I am committed to using my role as Borough President to advance their general welfare with the support and resources they deserve.”

The flag was given by then-Brooklyn Borough President Howard Golden in 1990 to the 102 Maintenance Company, 244th Nation Guard Division when the unit was assigned to the Persian Gulf in Operation Desert Storm. It was scorched by burning fragments from an enemy Scud missile, which was shot down by a U.S. Patriot missile during an attack near Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. The flag was returned to Brooklyn at homecoming ceremonies for the 102nd Maintenance Company on September 15th, 1991.

“I was born and raised in Brooklyn, and went onto serve in the US Army in Vietnam War,” said Patrick Gualtieri, executive director of the United War Veterans Council. “I am honored to be here today with Borough President Adams, and those proud veterans joining us who represent the more than 52,000 Brooklyn veterans from all eras living in our great borough. As the executive director of the United War Veterans Council, producers of the now-televised America’s Parade – Veterans Day, NYC on November 11^th – I assure you that this flag will be respected and featured during the parade.”

“As a proud Marine, OIF veteran, and as someone who grew up in Brooklyn, I am truly honored to participate in the flag ceremony with Borough President Adams and the distinguished veterans groups listed,” said Sergeant Shamar Thomas, U.S. Marine Corps veteran of Operation Iraqi Freedom (OIF). “Like this flag, our nations’ veterans and their families wear the scars of war, prompting us to never forget. As we walk down 5th avenue for the Veterans Day Parade, we must never forget those who have come before us, who have made the ultimate sacrifice to ensure that freedom persists. Semper Fi.”

On Tuesday at 2:00 PM, Brooklyn Borough President Eric L. Adams will welcome the Brooklyn Bolts of the Fall Experimental Football League (FXFL) at a rally on the steps of Brooklyn Borough Hall. The Bolts will kick off their season on Wednesday with a home game at MCU Park against the Boston Brawlers. Borough President Adams will cheer on the borough’s first professional football team since 1944 and speak to the importance of sports to Brooklyn’s culture.

Joining Borough President Adams will be the team’s players, coaches, including Head Coach John Bock, FXFL Commissioner Brian Woods, Council Member Mark Treyger and Brooklyn Chamber of Commerce President Carlo Scissura.

The Bolts, who are owned and operated by the FXFL, have a marketing and facility agreement in place with the Brooklyn Cyclones. The Bolts are owned jointly by the FXFL, New York Mets, Mets owner Jeff Wilpon and the Brooklyn Cyclones. The FXFL season consists of five games, with the Bolts facing the Brawlers, Omaha Mammoths and a traveling all-star squad known as the Blacktips. Rosters for all teams consist of players who are at most three years removed from college and all of which have some experience in the NFL, with the goal of further developing in hopes of making it back to that league.

Prior to the rally, players and coaches from the Bolts will mingle with fans as part of an autograph / photo session, which will start at 12:45 PM.

Tomorrow at 12:00 PM, Brooklyn Borough President Eric L. Adams will host pet adoption organizations and advocacy groups, along with a number of dogs, on the steps of Brooklyn Borough Hall to announce an effort to advance adoption of shelter pets in the borough and across the city. He will unveil a legislative push to incentivize New Yorkers to adopt pets from animal shelters or humane societies, as well as promote his Adopt-A-Pet Day this Saturday on Brooklyn Borough Hall Plaza, taking place from 11:00 AM until 3:00 PM, where shelter pets will be present and ready for adoption.

This announcement is being made during National Adopt a Shelter Dog Month, celebrated throughout October.

Groups in attendance tomorrow, which are also taking part in Saturday’s event, will include the ASPCA, Brooklyn Bark, Mayor’s Alliance for NYC Animals, Sean Casey Animal Rescue, Urban Utopia Wildlife Rehabilitation, and Veterinary Referral Emergency Group Animal Hospital.

Yesterday, Brooklyn Borough President Eric L. Adams met with New York City Fire Department (FDNY) Commissioner Daniel A. Nigro and members of the department’s citywide and borough leadership for a meet-and-greet. They discussed potential areas for collaboration, including expanding outreach for diversity hiring and encouraging Brooklynites to be certified in administering CPR.

“Commissioner Nigro and I share a commitment to the safety of Brooklyn, and I am excited to see how we will further this partnership in the months ahead,” said Borough President Adams. “We must pursue an approach of prevention when we think of safety, learning how to avoid disaster and tragedy before they befall us and our families; this philosophy includes our approach to fire safety, in conjunction with the FDNY. I also look forward to helping Commissioner Nigro achieve a shared vision of a diverse, well-equipped corps of firefighters and EMTs.”

BP ADAMS BEGINS DISTRIBUTION OF FREE CRIBS TO FAMILIES IN NEED, TACKLING NEWBORN HEALTH AND SUDDEN INFANT DEATH SYNDROME AHEAD OF MOTHER’S DAY

Today, Brooklyn Borough President Eric L. Adams proclaimed the month of May 2014 as “Safe Sleep Month”, just days ahead of Mother’s Day, at a press conference in the rotunda of Brooklyn Borough Hall, in order to alert new parents on the importance of proper care of their infants as well as tips to prevent Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS). In partnership with Delta Children, Borough President Adams announced that he is distributing 400 free cribs and play yards to families in need through local community boards, churches and non-profit organizations.

“We want to educate parents on simple items that can potentially harm their child, and that a safe clean crib leads to a safe household and a clean pathway to raising a healthy child,” said Borough President Adams. “We are the face of individuals in order to have a safe place to sleep, and one of our goals is to ensure that Brooklyn is a place that educates and empowers parents and families.”

During the press conference, Borough President Adams unveiled a new informational video on safe sleep tips, co-starring himself, Department of Health and Mental Hygiene Assistant Commissioner Dr. Aletha Maybank and Joe Shamie, President of Delta Children. The video can be viewed online at http://youtu.be/r0d1O1z1Nuw, and plans are in place to make it available to local daycare centers, hospitals and other related institutions.

Recipients of the cribs and play yards include victims of domestic violence, homeless families, victims of fires, families of returning veterans who are in need, young single moms, including teenage moms, families with a child that has a disability, as well as low income families and unemployed/underemployed families. Local organizations that have assisted Borough President Adams in distribution to these families include the NYC Family Justice Center in Brooklyn of the Mayor’s Office to Combat Domestic Violence, the Brooklyn District Attorney’s Office, Bed-Stuy Campaign Against Hunger, Brookdale Healthy Families Program, Catholic Charities, Center for Family Life, Fort Greene Snap, Lutheran Medical Center, Mixteca Organization and Serenity House Family Residence. Entertainment will be provided by a variety of Brooklyn community dance groups, including the Greek school of Plato Dance Group and members of the Hellenic Classical Charter School of Dance.
