New Treatment for Liver Cancer Slows Progression and

Improves Survival

A recent study by SWCRF-investigator, Dr. Josep Llovet (Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai), and colleagues has discovered a new treatment approach for unresectable,

non-metastatic hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC)—a form of liver cancer that cannot be surgically removed and has not yet spread to other parts of the body. Around 45,000 cases of HCC are diagnosed yearly in the US and about 1M globally.

According to their research, published in The Lancet (January 2025), combining transarterial chemoembolisation (TACE) with the drugs lenvatinib (a targeted therapy) and pembrolizumab (an immunotherapy) significantly improved patient outcomes compared to the placebo group.

Specifically, patients receiving this combination therapy experienced slower tumor progression and a trend towards overall higher survival rates. Additionally, the drug combination was well-tolerated, with manageable side effects, supporting its potential as a viable treatment option in patients with intermediate HCC.

“SWCRF has been instrumental in supporting the development of the HCC program at Mount Sinai since 2004. Their commitment to funding innovative cancer research has allowed us to make these significant strides in understanding and treating this devastating disease. This breakthrough would not have been possible without their continued support”, said Dr Josep M Llovet, Professor of Medicine and Director of the Liver Cancer Program at the Ichan School of Medicine.

This remarkable improvement marks the first clinical breakthrough in treating this challenging and often fatal form of cancer in more than 20 years.

Kudos to WXXI Public Broadcasting for airing “Asian Americans,” a five-part series to take us back in time from the 1800s to present. Knowing and learning history lessons will teach us to make better decisions today and for our future. Below is a description of each episode. We have partnered with WXXI to spotlight local Asian Americans from Rochester, New York. Please tune in and feel free to forward to your families, friends and networks!

Episode 1 – Breaking Ground

In an era of exclusion and U.S. empire, new immigrants arrive from China, India, Japan, the Philippines and beyond. Barred by anti-Asian laws they become America’s first “undocumented immigrants,” yet build railroads that dazzle on the silver screen, and take their fight for equality to the U.S. Supreme Court.

Episode 2 – Question of Loyalty

Monday 5/11 at 9 p.m.

An American-born generation straddles their country of birth and their parents’ homelands in Japan and Korea. Those loyalties are tested during World War II, when families are imprisoned in detention camps, and brothers find themselves on opposite sides of the battle lines.

Episode 3 – Good Americans

Tuesday 5/12 at 8 p.m.

During the Cold War years, Asian Americans are simultaneously heralded as a Model Minority, and targeted as the perpetual foreigner. It is also a time of bold ambition, as Asian Americans aspire for the first time to national political office and a coming culture-quake simmers beneath the surface.

Episode 4 – Generation Rising

Tuesday 5/12 at 9 p.m.

During a time of war and social tumult, as young generation fights for equality in the fields, on campuses and in the culture, and claims a new identity: Asian Americans. The war’s aftermath brings new immigrants and refugees who expand the population and the definition of Asian America.

Episode 5 – Breaking Through

Tuesday 5/12 at 10 p.m.

At the turn of the new millennium, the national conversation turns to immigration, race, and economic disparity. As the U.S. becomes more diverse, yet more divided, a new generation of Asian Americans tackle the question, how do we as a nation move forward together?

Have you ever heard that sickle cell disease (SCD) is contagious or people with sickle cell are lazy?

Believe it or not, these are just two of many common misconceptions people with SCD have to confront, leaving people with this genetic blood disorder feeling misunderstood and often isolated.

Cultural barriers and misinformation about SCD have contributed to its misunderstood reputation, and it is more important than ever to educate people in the U.S. about the disease so we can reduce the ignorance surrounding it. Storytelling is among the best ways to bring awareness to the disease and help squash associated misconceptions and stigmas.

The SCD experience is highly varied. By highlighting personal stories of individuals with the disease, it can help to bring about a better understanding of the challenges people face. Historically, SCD has been affected by issues of healthcare inequality, including challenges in access to care and limited funding support.

Sickle Cell Speaks is a new campaign that aims to raise awareness and understanding of sickle cell by highlighting the personal stories of individuals and families impacted.

SCD is a group of inherited red blood cell disorders which affect approximately 100,000 people in the U.S., with people of African descent making up 90% (1 in 365 births). The most talked about symptom is often severe pain episodes or crises, but one of the most serious consequences of SCD is hemolytic anemia, or the destruction of red blood cells. The damaged blood vessels reduce blood flow to organs in the body, and this reduced blood flow permanently injures key organs and puts patients at a greater risk of stroke and early death.

National Sickle Cell Awareness Month, your audience can meet Mapillar Dahn, a mom caring for three children who have SCD. She’ll be joined by Beverley Francis-Gibson, the President & CEO of Sickle Cell Disease Association of America. Both guests can discuss the new campaign, the stigmas patients face and long-term impacts of the disease.

Damone, whose smooth baritone led Frank Sinatra to famously declare he “had the best pipes in the business,” died at Mount Sinai Medical Center in Miami Beach, Fla., surrounded by several close relatives.

Damone also received a call from his friend, President Donald Trump, at the hospital in the days before he died, his family said.

Damone starred in several television series, including “The Vic Damone Show” on NBC, and hit movies including “Kismet” and “Rich, Young and Pretty,” but the singer did not consider himself a true crossover star.

“I never thought of myself that way,” Damone wrote in his memoir. “That wasn’t my particular gift. My gift was singing.”

Best known for hits “You’re Breaking My Heart” and “On the Street Where You Live,” with over 2,500 recordings under his belt, Damone was part of the golden age of lounge singers who came to fame after World War II, including Sinatra, Tony Bennett, Dean Martin and Perry Como.

Damone’s first big break came at the age of 14, with Como’s help. Damone was forced to drop out of high school and take a job as an usher at the Paramount Theater in New York City, where he bumped into Como in an elevator. Damone stopped the elevator between floors and started singing.

He asked Como on whether he should continue voice lessons and Como said simply, “Keep singing!”

Fate intervened for Damone again in the summer of 1946, when Sinatra was playing poker at a friend’s Manhattan apartment, and one of Sinatra’s classics, “Night and Day,” came on the radio. Sinatra was astounded when the singer turned out to be Damone, live in the studio. Sinatra phoned the radio station and told Damone: “This is Frank Sinatra, and I want you to stop singing my songs.”

Damone thought he was being pranked and barked back, “Yeah, if you’re Frank Sinatra, then I’m the Pope.”

Months later, Sinatra ended up introducing Damone at a charity fundraiser in Madison Square Garden.

“I’d like to introduce to you Vic Damone,” Sinatra said. “This kid’s a really great singer. He’s got stardust on his shoulders.”

Damone was born Vito Farinola on June 12, 1928, in the Bensonhurst section of Brooklyn to Italian immigrant parents, Rocco and Mamie (Damone) Farinola.

Damone is survived by six grandchildren and two sisters, Elaine Seneca and Terry Sicuso. Two other sisters died before Damone: Sandy Boucher and Pia Romeo.

Damone is also survived by three son-in-laws, William Karant, Michael Woodard, and Joel Brown.

A son named after Perry Como, Perry Farinola Damone, died in 2014.
