A new children’s book is being released to help families impacted by breast cancer.

“The Adventure Jar: A Story of Magic for Families Living with Metastatic Breast Cancer” is intended for children ages three to eight. The book follows the story of a family affected by metastatic breast cancer as they discover that even through the challenges of their mom’s diagnosis – involving inevitable change, uncertainty and disappointment – there is magic to be found in time shared together.

Family life can be upended when a parent has cancer, and it can be difficult for parents to bear witness to the impact it can have on young children – creating a crucial need for resources to help navigate the challenging emotions that follow.

The Adventure Jar, led by Gilead Sciences, was created in collaboration with eight diverse members of the metastatic breast cancer (MBC) community and professionals, including a psychiatrist, to help families impacted by MBC.

Among these collaborators is Gilead Patient Ambassador Lauren Huffmaster. She was diagnosed with MBC at 37 years old and struggled with the emotional impact cancer had on her husband and three young daughters, who were two, four and six at the time. Nearly a decade since her diagnosis, MBC continues to shape the lives of her daughters, but they’ve made it a habit to redefine their circumstances.

Breast cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer and leading cause of cancer death among women aged 20 to 49 years in the US[ Siegel, R. L., Miller, K. D., Wagle, N. S., & Jemal, A. (2023). Cancer statistics, 2023. CA: A Cancer Journal for Clinicians, 73(1), 17–48. https://doi.org/10.3322/caac.21763.

MBC is the most advanced stage of breast cancer that has spread to other areas of the body, most often the bones, lungs, liver or brain.[ Metastatic Breast Cancer Facts and Statistics. (n.d.). Susan G. Komen®. Retrieved June 14, 2024, from https://www.komen.org/breast-cancer/facts-statistics/what-is-breast-cancer/metastatic-breast-cancer/ It’s a lifelong disease, and treatment is an ongoing reality that doesn’t go away for most people. As younger women are being diagnosed with MBC at an alarming rate, this means that families, including many young children, are increasingly impacted.

https://www.gene.com/
When breast cancer is detected earlier, the disease is easier to treat successfully.1 Patients diagnosed in the early localized stage — meaning the cancer has not spread — have seen 5-year relative survival rates of 99 percent.2

Current research suggests that a reduction in breast cancer screenings at the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic may have contributed to fewer early-stage and more late-stage breast cancer diagnoses in 2020 (latest statistics available) than in 2019, according to a study published by the journal JAMA Network Open.3

Many people experienced delayed or cancelled mammograms because of the pandemic, and these disruptions may have contributed to later-stage breast cancer diagnoses, when the disease is more difficult to treat.3,4

While mammography screenings rebounded overall by July 2020, the cumulative deficit of missed mammograms may have important public health consequences,5 including the furthering of health disparities.6

Since 2021, breast cancer diagnoses have exceeded lung cancer diagnoses, becoming the most diagnosed cancer worldwide.7,8

In the United States, it is estimated that about 287,850 women in 2022 will be diagnosed with breast cancer.9 Breast cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer among women in the U.S., and this year it’s estimated that about 30% of all newly diagnosed cancers in women will be breast cancers.10

For those facing a breast cancer diagnosis, the treatment that follows can be challenging and time consuming. Additionally, the type of breast cancer a patient has — including triple negative, HER2+ or HR+ — impacts the type of treatment they’ll receive.

Dr. Ahmed Elkhanany, a breast cancer expert at the University of Alabama at Birmingham, will discuss the latest news surrounding delays in breast cancer screenings and some of the recent treatment options. A patient share her experience too.

Dr. Rosenberg, M.D., Ph.D., chief of the Surgery Branch in NCI’s Center for Cancer Research is one of our nation’s leading pioneers on immunotherapy — harnessing the power of a patient’s own immune syste

NIH study advances personalized immunotherapy for metastatic breast cancer

An experimental form of immunotherapy that uses an individual’s own tumor-fighting immune cells could potentially be used to treat people with metastatic breast cancer, according to results from an ongoing clinical trial led by researchers at the National Cancer Institute’s (NCI) Center for Cancer Research, part of the National Institutes of Health. Many people with metastatic breast cancer can mount an immune reaction against their tumors, the study found, a prerequisite for this type of immunotherapy, which relies on what are called tumor-infiltrating lymphocytes (TILs).

In a clinical trial of 42 women with metastatic breast cancer, 28 (or 67%) generated an immune reaction against their cancer. The approach was used to treat six women, half of whom experienced measurable tumor shrinkage. Results from the trial appeared Feb. 1, 2022, in the Journal of Clinical Oncology.

“It’s popular dogma that hormone receptor–positive breast cancers are not capable of provoking an immune response and are not susceptible to immunotherapy,” said study leader Steven A. Rosenberg, M.D., Ph.D., chief of the Surgery Branch in NCI’s Center for Cancer Research. “The findings suggest that this form of immunotherapy can be used to treat some people with metastatic breast cancer who have exhausted all other treatment options.”

Immunotherapy is a treatment that helps a person’s own immune system fight cancer. However, most available immunotherapies, such as immune checkpoint inhibitors, have shown limited effectiveness against hormone receptor–positive breast cancers, which are the majority of breast cancers.

The immunotherapy approach used in the trial was pioneered in the late 1980s by Dr. Rosenberg and his colleagues at NCI. It relies on TILs, T cells that are found in and around the tumor.

TILs can target tumor cells that have specific proteins on their surface, called neoantigens, that the immune cells recognize. Neoantigens are produced when mutations occur in tumor DNA. Other forms of immunotherapy have been found to be effective in treating cancers, such as melanoma, that have many mutations, and therefore many neoantigens. Its effectiveness in cancers that have fewer neoantigens, such as breast cancer, however, has been less clear.

The results of the new study come from an ongoing phase 2 clinical trial being carried out by Dr. Rosenberg and his colleagues. This trial was designed to see if the immunotherapy approach could lead to tumor regressions in people with metastatic epithelial cancers, including breast cancer. In 2018, the researchers showed that one woman with metastatic breast cancer who was treated in this trial had complete tumor shrinkage, known as a complete response.

In the trial, the researchers used whole-genome sequencing to identify mutations in tumor samples from 42 women with metastatic breast cancer whose cancers had progressed despite all other treatments. The researchers then isolated TILs from the tumor samples and, in lab tests, tested their reactivity against neoantigens produced by the different mutations in the tumor.

Twenty-eight women had TILs that recognized at least one neoantigen. Nearly all the neoantigens identified were unique to each patient.

“It’s fascinating that the Achilles’ heel of these cancers can potentially be the very gene mutations that caused the cancer,” said Dr. Rosenberg. “Since that 2018 study, we now have information on 42 patients, showing that the majority give rise to immune reactions.”

For the six women treated, the researchers took the reactive TILs and grew them to large numbers in the lab. They then returned the immune cells to each patient via intravenous infusion. All the patients were also given four doses of the immune checkpoint inhibitor pembrolizumab (Keytruda) before the infusion to prevent the newly introduced T cells from becoming inactivated.

After the treatment, tumors shrank in three of the six women. One is the original woman reported in the 2018 study, who remains cancer free to this day. The other two women had tumor shrinkage of 52% and 69% after six months and 10 months, respectively. However, some disease returned and was surgically removed. Those women now have no evidence of cancer approximately five years and 3.5 years, respectively, after their TIL treatment.

The researchers acknowledged that the use of pembrolizumab, which has been approved for some early-stage breast cancers, may raise uncertainties about its influence on the outcome of TIL therapy. However, they said, treatment with such checkpoint inhibitors alone has not led to sustained tumor shrinkage in people with hormone receptor–positive metastatic breast cancer.

Dr. Rosenberg said that with the anticipated opening early this year of NCI’s new building devoted to cell-based therapies, he and his colleagues can begin treating more individuals with metastatic breast cancer as part of the ongoing clinical trial. He noted that this new immunotherapy approach could potentially be used for people with other types of cancer as well.

“We’re using a patient’s own lymphocytes as a drug to treat the cancer by targeting the unique mutations in that cancer,” he said. “This is a highly personalized treatment.”

While the five-year survival rate for breast cancer has reached 90-percent in recent years, for women with metastatic breast cancer — where the cancer has spread to other parts of the body — that rate is only 28-percent. And when COVID-19 caused delays in routine mammograms, doctors saw a jump in these advanced cases. Here now to talk about the latest developments and why breast cancer awareness needs to happen year-round, is Dr. Ramaswamy (RAH-muh-swah-mee) from The Ohio State University Medical Center.

What should people be aware of in terms of breast cancer screening and COVID-19?

Can you tell us about your experience treating people diagnosed with MBC? What are the biggest unmet needs and how is the treatment landscape changing?

What are some of the major challenges in MBC today?

Why is it so important for women to not delay routine mammogram screenings?

Where can the MBC community go for more information and support?

BIO-Dr. Bhuvana Ramaswamy is a breast cancer oncologist, physician-scientist at the James. She leads the breast medical oncology section and is also the Chair of the Clinical Scientific Review Committee for the James. Her research interests are in drug-resistance and racial disparities in cancer outcomes. Her lab focuses on finding the molecular link between breastfeeding and risk of breast cancer. New research expands the number of women with a common type of early stage breast cancer who can skip chemotherapy and safely be treated with hormone-blocking therapies alone – even if their cancer has spread to some of their lymph nodes.[1] However, women whose tumors have spread to their lymph nodes are often at higher risk of worse outcomes, with the majority receiving chemotherapy.[2]
Results from the RxPONDER study, one of the largest clinical trials in hormone receptor-positive, HER2 negative early breast cancer, were presented at the San Antonio Breast Cancer Symposium in late 2020.1
Based on these new findings, postmenopausal women whose cancer has spread to between one and three lymph nodes can avoid the side effects associated with chemotherapy if their Oncotype DX Breast Recurrence Score® result, a genomic test which predicts chemotherapy benefit and risk of cancer recurrence, is between 0 and 25.1
Breast cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer worldwide, surpassing lung cancer for the first time in 2020.[3] With the growing recognition of the importance of personalized treatment for breast cancer, genomic testing can help tailor treatment decisions to a patient’s individual tumor. Facing a breast cancer diagnosis can be overwhelming but getting a genomic test to understand the unique biology of a patient’s tumor can help guide personalized treatment decisions.
Our guest, Dr. Deepa Halaharvi, a board-certified breast cancer surgeon at Ohio Health, can speak to the practice-changing impact of this recent study for postmenopausal women with node-positive breast cancer and the importance of genomic tests in enabling confident breast cancer treatment decisions.
As a breast cancer survivor herself, Dr. Halaharvi is in the unique position of seeing breast cancer from the perspective of a doctor as well as a patient. She will share her cancer story, including how the Oncotype DX® test informed her treatment, following her diagnosis with stage 1 HR positive, HER2 negative breast cancer at age 42, just 8 months after becoming a practicing breast surgeon. She’ll also talk about how her personal experience has greatly impacted the type of care she offers her patients, helping them to survive and thrive.
We seek to grow and serve a vibrant, global footwear industry, where doing business in New York is profitable and easy for our membership, and where the industry strengthens through education and unites in charity.

Our mission is to:

Serve and grow the footwear industry by making it easy and fun for buyers and sellers of shoes to do business in New York.
Drive innovation to make the buying and selling of shoes easier.
Strengthen the industry through education.
Unite the industry in charity.
Propel the industry forward.
New York City is the heart of fashion and the center of global business. That’s why we’re dedicated to growing the footwear industry by making it easy to do business in New York. The New York Shoe Expo brings together retailers, brands, designers, buyers and sellers four times a year – all right here in New York City.

Giving back is a huge part of our mission at FFANY. FFANY unites the industry in charity by rallying footwear leaders around important causes including, in particular, breast cancer research.

Growing an industry takes more than just business opportunities. At FFANY, we understand the need to strengthen the industry through education. From scholarships and workshops to e-learning courses, FFANY is paving the way for a new generation for footwear professionals.
New York, United States Rating:★ 4.0
