HCP Bio: Dr. James Dugan

Dr. James Dugan is a hematology/oncology specialist, and the physician lead for the transplant and cellular therapy department for Novant Health Cancer Institute in Winston-Salem, North Carolina.

Dr. Dugan was drawn to the field of oncology by the opportunity to improve a person’s life during a difficult time. He believes that to properly treat the whole person and not just the disease, physicians need to engage in active conversations with the patient throughout the treatment process. Dr. Dugan approaches medicine and oncology as a partnership between the physician and the patient.

Dr. Dugan is a member of the American Society of Hematology, as well as the American Society for Transplant and Cellular therapy. His membership in these organizations keeps him up-to-date on the latest research and treatment options in the field.

When he is not seeing patients, Dr. Dugan enjoys time with his wife and three daughters. He is an outdoor enthusiast who enjoys skiing, scuba diving, kite surfing, and long-distance running. He is passionate about the shared human experience and loves meeting new people and exploring new ideas and places.

Patient Bio: Jen

In 2014, Jen was diagnosed with Philadelphia chromosome positive chronic myeloid leukemia (Ph+ CML) in chronic phase (CP).
Prior to her diagnosis, Jen devoted her career to serving others. After dedicating 20 years to running inner-city youth programs, Jen became a social worker, supporting women as they rebuilt their lives after incarceration or experiencing domestic violence.
Jen was actively working as a social worker when she was diagnosed with CML. Unfortunately, her diagnosis required her to step away from her career for a period of time. Working closely with her doctor, she navigated the treatment landscape to find a treatment option that worked for her.
Today, she is a teacher in her rural community, educating K-8 students in a one-room schoolhouse. She is also passionate about sharing her journey and advocating for other adults with CML, helping them access the information and support they need to have meaningful conversations with their doctors and navigate their own patient journeys.

For well over a century and a half the people of Indiana have been called Hoosiers. It is one of the oldest of state nicknames and has had a wider acceptance than most. True, there are Buckeyes of Ohio, the Suckers of Illinois and the Tarheels of North Carolina — but none of these has had the popular usage accorded Hoosier.

The only comparable term in American experience is Yankee. And that started out as a synonym for New Englander. In the Civil War era Southerners applied it indiscriminately to all Northerners. In the world wars, many a boy from Dixie doubtless felt a sense of shock when he discovered that in the eyes of our British (Limey) allies that all Americans were Yanks!

But where did Hoosier come from? What is its origin? We know that it came into general usage in the 1830s. John Finley of Richmond wrote a poem, “The Hoosier’s Nest,” which was used as the “Carrier’s Address” of the Indianapolis Journal, Jan. 1, 1833. It was widely copied throughout the country and even abroad. Finley originally wrote Hoosier as “Hoosher.” Apparently the poet felt that it was sufficiently familiar to be understandable to his readers. A few days later, on January 8, 1833, at the Jackson Day dinner at Indianapolis, John W. Davis offered “The Hoosher State of Indiana” as a toast. And in August, former Indiana governor James B. Ray announced that he intended to publish a newspaper, The Hoosier, at Greencastle, Indiana.

A few instances of the earlier written use of Hoosier have been found. The word appears in the “Carrier’s Address” of the Indiana Democrat on January 3, 1832. G. L. Murdock wrote on February 11, 1831, in a letter to General John Tipton, “Our Boat will [be] named the Indiana Hoosier.” In a publication printed in 1860, Recollections . . . of the Wabash Valley, Sandford Cox quotes a diary which he dates July 14, 1827, “There is a Yankee trick for you — done up by a Hoosier.” One can only wonder how long before this Hoosier was used orally.

As soon as our nickname came into general use, speculation began as to its origin. The speculation and argument have gone on ever since. On October 26, 1833, the Indiana Democrat reprinted an article published earlier in the Cincinnati Republican: “The appellation of Hooshier has been used in many of the Western States, for several years, to designate . . . an inhabitant of our sister state of Indiana.” The Ohio editor then reviews three explanations of the nickname and concludes:

Whatever may have been the original acceptation of Hooshier this we know, that the people to whom it is now applied, are amongst the bravest, most intelligent, most enterprising, most magnanimous, and most democratic of the Great West, and should we ever feel disposed to quit the state in which we are now sojourning, our own noble Ohio, it will be to enroll ourselves as adopted citizens in the land of the “Hooshier.”

Among the more popular theories:

When a visitor hailed a pioneer cabin in Indiana or knocked upon its door, the settler would respond, “Who’s yere?” And from this frequent response Indiana became the “Who’s yere” or Hoosier state. No one ever explained why this was more typical of Indiana than of Illinois or Ohio.
That Indiana rivermen were so spectacularly successful in trouncing or “hushing” their adversaries in the brawling that was then common that they became known as “hushers,” and eventually Hoosiers.
There was once a contractor named Hoosier employed on the Louisville and Portland Canal who preferred to hire laborers from Indiana. They were called “Hoosier’s men” and eventually all Indianans were called Hoosiers.
A theory attributed to Gov. Joseph Wright derived Hoosier from an Indian word for corn, “hoosa.” Indiana flatboatmen taking corn or maize to New Orleans came to be known as “hoosa men” or Hoosiers. Unfortunately for this theory, a search of Indian vocabularies by a careful student of linguistics failed to reveal any such word for corn.
Quite as plausible as these was the facetious explanation offered by “The Hoosier Poet,” James Whitcomb Riley. He claimed that Hoosier originated in the pugnacious habits of our early settlers. They were enthusiastic and vicious fighters who gouged, scratched and bit off noses and ears. This was so common an occurrence that a settler coming into a tavern the morning after a fight and seeing an ear on the floor would touch it with his toe and casually ask, “Whose ear?”
The distinguished Hoosier writer, Meredith Nicholson (The Hoosiers) and many others have inquired into the origin of Hoosier. But by all odds the most serious student of the matter was Jacob Piatt Dunn, Jr., Indiana historian and longtime secretary of the Indiana Historical Society. Dunn noted that “hoosier” was frequently used in many parts of the South in the 19th century for woodsmen or rough hill people. He traced the word back to “hoozer,” in the Cumberland dialect of England. This derives from the Anglo-Saxon word “hoo” meaning high or hill. In the Cumberland dialect, the word “hoozer” meant anything unusually large, presumably like a hill. It is not hard to see how this word was attached to a hill dweller or highlander. Immigrants from Cumberland, England, settled in the southern mountains (Cumberland Mountains, Cumberland River, Cumberland Gap, etc.). Their descendents brought the name with them when they settled in the hills of southern Indiana.

As Meredith Nicholson observed: “The origin of the term ‘Hoosier’ is not known with certainty.” But certain it is that . . . Hoosiers bear their nickname proudly. Many generations of Hoosier achievement have endowed the term with connotations that are strong and friendly . . . .

The Peace Center is a performing arts center located in Greenville, South Carolina. It is composed of a concert hall, theater, and amphitheatre. It is located adjacent to Falls Park. It hosts over 300 events each year, including classical music, Broadway shows, and appearances by popular artists such as David Copperfield.

The Peace Center is named after the local Peace family who donated $10 million towards its development. The center was opened in 1990 and is built on the former site of three dilapidated factories – one building wagons for the Confederate Army, a textile plant built in the 1880s, and a building serving as the home for Duke’s Mayonnaise. There are four resident companies: Greenville Symphony Orchestra, Carolina Ballet Theatre, South Carolina Children’s Theater, and the International Ballet. In January 2004, the Peace Center hosted a debate among Democratic presidential candidates. In May 2011, it was the site of the first Republican debate for the 2012 presidential election. In February 2016, it was the site of the ninth Republican debate for the 2016 presidential election.

TD Stage at the Peace Center (formerly the Peace Center Amphitheatre) opened September 12, 2012 hosting Vince Gill. The night started with Mayor Knox White and TD executives hosting a ribbon cutting ceremony. Seating capacity is projected to be 1,400+. Patrons are able to sit along the tiered seat-walls or use blankets or lawn chairs in the open-seating areas.

Do you have vivid dreams or sometimes laugh so hard your knees give way? It could mean you have narcolepsy – the chronic neurologic condition where the brain is not able to control sleep-wake cycles normally. If you do, you’re not alone. It’s estimated that 1 in 2000 people in the U.S. experience this condition, but more than half of them don’t know they have it. Now, one woman who was finally diagnosed with narcolepsy is on a mission to educate others about it. UNC professor Julea Steiner has teamed up with Jazz Pharmaceuticals to share her story. She, joins us now with more. www.morethantired.com
Bio
Julea Steiner
Julea Steiner is a sleep health advocate and Assistant clinical professor and director of professional development in the Public Health Leadership Program at the University of North Carolina. After suffering with sleepiness and cataplexy for more than 20 years, she was finally diagnosed with narcolepsy at age 36.
Before she was diagnosed, Julea felt tired all the time and experienced vivid dreams and hallucinations. She saw a number of doctors who misdiagnosed her with everything from ADHD to vitamin deficiency until finally one physician suggested she go in for a sleep test. Julea is passionate about raising awareness about narcolepsy. She encourages others to explore their symptoms and break through the cultural stereotypes of the disorder.

Our little family and the trusty schooner have returned home. The schooner rests peacefully on her river of birth, the Cape Fear River. Soanya, Darshen and I are in the family home in Greensboro.

We had a great voyage home. Besides our stopover in St. Thomas VI, we never lowered a sail the whole voyage. The winds blew out of the NE all the way to the mouth of the Cape Fear River.

We had some tech savvy delivery crew with us in the VI and when they opened their computers to Passage Weather, the weather maps showed four days of contrary winds and squalls. They decided they didn’t have time to deal with that. So they jumped ship and caught the next plane home. That left us with only Jennifer, who had never been to sea before.

Despite the contrary weather forecast, we were eager to get to sea and deal with whatever nature sent our way. It was late November and the hurricane season was over. We motored twenty miles offshore, turned off our motor and drifted on a beautiful blue sea and enjoyed the view. Black rain squalls arrived from all directions and we milked them for a few miles at a time. During the night when all was pitch black we decided to heave-to and let the wind blow. When the wind picked up, we took off for North Carolina averaging 150 to 180 miles a day. During a momentary calm Soanya saw a big fish swimming by our underwater window and called out to me. I grabbed my fishing line and with my ever present partner, Darshen, by my side, I quickly pulled two Mahi Mahi aboard. Darshen squealed in joy and fear and ran back to the cockpit where he energetically did his happy dance, jumping in place and waving his arms.

A stiff wind picked up again and we continued on our 330 degrees course back to North Carolina. We were heading home to leave the schooner indefinitely to help Dad adjust to his new life without his wife, Anne, of 60 years. Her framed picture in the pilot house gave me solace and courage and I knew I was doing the right thing in her eyes.

The wind died completely as we approached the mouth of the Cape Fear River. A heavy blanket of fog blocked our entrance, but as we motored forward it lifted and let us under. It was a great surprise to be met by my Uncle Bill and Cousin Bo as they drove up in a speedboat. We anchored across the river from Southport and they ferried my Dad and sisters out for a visit and Jennifer to the airport.

We still had twenty miles to sail up the river to Wilmington, so at dawn the next day we caught the tide up. We landed on the dock December the fifth. That was the day I was aiming for, my mother’s birthday. It was also the day my brother Bobby and I arrived home on the last voyage of the catamaran Tantra 38 years ago. I don’t know how these things happen, but they make the milestones in life memorable and magical.

Dad climbed aboard the schooner Anne and we all enjoyed a warm December sun. “Look Dad, the stainless steel fittings you made 35 years ago are still strong. They are almost the only thing on the schooner that has not broken.” Dad smiled and looked around. Soanya busily cleared the galley and packed food to take to Greensboro. Darshen ran back and forth from bow to stern and Dad said, “No running”. I said, “Dad, the halyards and lifelines run along the edge of the boat and Darshen knows he is not supposed to go near the edge of the deck or even touch the lifelines. I can’t stop him from expressing his playful energy.” We watched Darshen running and bouncing like a frog. “We are home Dad. We are here to be with you”.

Ed. Note: More pics and blogs from Guyana coming soon as well as how Reid and family adjust to a “normal” life!
