Snow consists of individual ice crystals that grow while suspended in the atmosphere—usually within clouds—and then fall, accumulating on the ground where they undergo further changes.[2] It consists of frozen crystalline water throughout its life cycle, starting when, under suitable conditions, the ice crystals form in the atmosphere, increase to millimeter size, precipitate and accumulate on surfaces, then metamorphose in place, and ultimately melt, slide or sublimate away.

Snowstorms organize and develop by feeding on sources of atmospheric moisture and cold air. Snowflakes nucleate around particles in the atmosphere by attracting supercooled water droplets, which freeze in hexagonal-shaped crystals. Snowflakes take on a variety of shapes, basic among these are platelets, needles, columns and rime. As snow accumulates into a snowpack, it may blow into drifts. Over time, accumulated snow metamorphoses, by sintering, sublimation and freeze-thaw. Where the climate is cold enough for year-to-year accumulation, a glacier may form. Otherwise, snow typically melts seasonally, causing runoff into streams and rivers and recharging groundwater.

Major snow-prone areas include the polar regions, the northernmost half of the Northern Hemisphere and mountainous regions worldwide with sufficient moisture and cold temperatures. In the Southern Hemisphere, snow is confined primarily to mountainous areas, apart from Antarctica.[3]

Snow affects such human activities as transportation: creating the need for keeping roadways, wings, and windows clear; agriculture: providing water to crops and safeguarding livestock; sports such as skiing, snowboarding, and snowmachine travel; and warfare. Snow affects ecosystems, as well, by providing an insulating layer during winter under which plants and animals are able to survive the cold.[1]

Snow develops in clouds that themselves are part of a larger weather system. The physics of snow crystal development in clouds results from a complex set of variables that include moisture content and temperatures. The resulting shapes of the falling and fallen crystals can be classified into a number of basic shapes and combinations thereof. Occasionally, some plate-like, dendritic and stellar-shaped snowflakes can form under clear sky with a very cold temperature inversion present.[4]

Snow clouds usually occur in the context of larger weather systems, the most important of which is the low-pressure area, which typically incorporate warm and cold fronts as part of their circulation. Two additional and locally productive sources of snow are lake-effect (also sea-effect) storms and elevation effects, especially in mountains.

The strong convection that develops has enough moisture to produce whiteout conditions at places which the line passes over as the wind causes intense blowing snow.[7] This type of snowsquall generally lasts less than 30 minutes at any point along its path, but the motion of the line can cover large distances. Frontal squalls may form a short distance ahead of the surface cold front or behind the cold front where there may be a deepening low-pressure system or a series of trough lines which act similar to a traditional cold frontal passage. In situations where squalls develop post-frontally, it is not unusual to have two or three linear squall bands pass in rapid succession separated only by 25 miles (40 kilometers), with each passing the same point roughly 30 minutes apart. In cases where there is a large amount of vertical growth and mixing, the squall may develop embedded cumulonimbus clouds resulting in lightning and thunder which is dubbed thundersnow.

A warm front can produce snow for a period as warm, moist air overrides below-freezing air and creates precipitation at the boundary. Often, snow transitions to rain in the warm sector behind the front.[7]

Main article: Lake-effect snow

Lake-effect snow is produced during cooler atmospheric conditions when a cold air mass moves across long expanses of warmer lake water, warming the lower layer of air which picks up water vapor from the lake, rises up through the colder air above, freezes, and is deposited on the leeward (downwind) shores.[8][9]

The same effect occurring over bodies of salt water is termed ocean-effect or bay-effect snow. The effect is enhanced when the moving air mass is uplifted by the orographic influence of higher elevations on the downwind shores. This uplifting can produce narrow but very intense bands of precipitation which may deposit at a rate of many inches of snow each hour, often resulting in a large amount of total snowfall.[10]

The areas affected by lake-effect snow are called snowbelts. These include areas east of the Great Lakes, the west coasts of northern Japan, the Kamchatka Peninsula in Russia, and areas near the Great Salt Lake, Black Sea, Caspian Sea, Baltic Sea, and parts of the northern Atlantic Ocean.[11]

Just as you may not run as fast or jump as high as you did as a teenager, your brain’s cognitive power—that is, your ability to learn, remember, and solve problems—slows down with age. You may find it harder to summon once familiar facts or divide your attention among two or more activities or sources of information. These changes affect your ability to focus, so you may find yourself getting more easily distracted than you were when you were younger.Hearing loss that often accompanies aging makes it more difficult to distinguish speech in a noisy environment. Because hearing then requires more concentration than usual, even mild loss of the ability to focus can affect speech comprehension.

Most people start to notice changes as they enter their 50s and 60s. Although these changes can cause consternation, most age-related memory and thinking problems don’t stem from an underlying brain disease such as Alzheimer’s disease. Instead, what appears to be a memory problem may simply reflect a slower processing speed and poor encoding and retrieval of new memories as a result of diminished attention. However, even though your brain may be slower to learn and recall new information, your ability to make sense of what you know and to form reasonable arguments and judgments remains intact.

Many of these limitations are reversible and related to poor sleep, but structural changes that take place in your brain as you age can explain some of these developments, too. Brain regions involved with memory processing, such as the hippocampus and especially the frontal lobes, undergo anatomical and neurochemical changes over time.

The result is that as you age, it takes longer to absorb, process, and remember new information. The natural loss of receptors and neurons that occurs with aging may also make it harder to concentrate. Therefore, you not only learn information more slowly, but you also may have more trouble recalling it because you didn’t fully learn it in the first place. With slower processing, facts held in working memory may dissipate before you have had a chance to solve a problem.

In addition, the ability to perform tasks that involve executive function declines with age. Many people learn to compensate for these changes by relying on habit most of the time and devoting extra effort to focus on new information they are trying to learn.

Even the aches and pains of getting older can affect focus. Pain itself is distracting, and some of the medications used to treat it also can affect concentration.

For more information on conquering distractions and finding focus, check out Improving Concentration and Focus, an online guide from Harvard Medical School.

CASSANDRA SPEAKS

When Women Are the Storytellers, The Human Story Changes

By Elizabeth Lesser

Throughout history, most of humankind’s origin stories, hero’s tales, novels, and films have been told by men. Embedded in those stories are morals about men and women, power and war, sex and love, and what it takes to be courageous, gallant, and strong. These stories stick to us, inform our values, and validate or invalidate whole swaths of people.

But what if women had been the storytellers too? What kind of world would women have longed for and led us toward? What story would Eve have told about picking the apple and leaving the garden? What would Pandora have said about opening the box? And what if the populous had listened to Cassandra… and to all the Cassandras throughout the ages who have been cast as fickle, sinful, and untrustworthy? What if women had been given the same moral authority as men? How would that have changed our culture? How will that change our world today? These are the questions that best-selling author Elizabeth Lesser explores in her highly anticipated new book CASSANDRA SPEAKS: When Women Are the Storytellers, The Human Story Changes (Harper Wave; September 15, 2020; ISBN: 9780062887184; 304 pages; $27.99).

Using her great gifts of humor and insight, feminist research, and spiritual introspection, Lesser follows the breadcrumbs from the old stories to newer films and literature, leadership classics, and business books, and adds her own stories of being a mother, wife, cultural observer and organizational leader. She empowers women to trust their instincts, speak their truths, and reclaim their authentic voices from under the weight of thousands of years’ worth of fake news from history. She encourages women and men to reimagine a world together where the stories we tell, the monuments we build, and the language we use value caretaking and communication over vengeance and violence.

The book is brilliantly structured into three distinct parts. In Part One, Lesser gives us a fresh way to consider our deeply embedded Origin tales and examines ancient stories and texts, including:

• The story of Eve: Our guiding origin story is based in misogyny and blame, and womankind bears the scars of her sin instead of the honor of her courage.

• Cassandra’s curse: Our most ancient example of gaslighting. Like Cassandra, women today know the truth of our own experiences, but it’s still “common knowledge” that women’s emotions cloud their vision, that we tend toward hysteria, and therefore are not to be trusted.

• The myth of Pygmalion and Galatea has been painted by artists and interpreted by authors throughout the ages. Modern versions of the myth abound—in plays and films, and on TV and social media. From Eliza Doolittle to Pretty Woman to reality-TV makeover shows—all perpetuate the theme that men, or the culture at large, are the arbiters and molders of acceptable female beauty and behavior. Lesser asks, “Why are we still preoccupied by an arbitrary notion of what makes a woman beautiful, sexually desirable, or worthy of love? Why do we sacrifice our comfort, time, money, authenticity, and even our health to live up to unattainable body images? Why do we curb our emotions, repress our sexuality, quiet our voices, restrict our ambition? Why are we still under the spell of Galatea?”

Part Two looks at the story of power, and encourages women to “do power differently.” Lesser asks, “What would it be like for humanity today if women had contributed to the theories and stories about what it meant to be a powerful person? What if the relational skills women had developed over the centuries had been as revered as the skills of men? It’s time for women to tell their versions of what it means to be fully human.” Delving into texts both ancient and current, from Sun Tzu and Machiavelli to the unquestioned words of business gurus, she encourages women to ask, “What is power anyway? Who gets to have it, use it, define it? Can it be shared? Does it always corrupt? Can a person wield power without violence and domination?”

And Part Three offers “A Toolbox for Inner Strength.” Lesser provides inner tools to help us be both strong-willed and kind-hearted and to look within and take responsibility for our own shadows. She encourages us to examine: how both women and men are wounded by patriarchy; how we use language—we describe almost everything we do from the major to the mundane, using words of combat (front lines, battle, etc.), which seeps into our consciousness and affects the way we go about our daily lives; how women suffer from the “imposter syndrome,” and ways of overcoming it; how we are going through “a collective rite of passage” and need to support and uplift each other; the importance of a “do no harm and take no shit” philosophy; and how we all can rewrite the hero myth by honoring and telling the stories of women who have inspired us.

Women, men, and all people will find themselves in the pages of this book and will come away strengthened, opened, and ready to work together to create a better world for all. “When I dream of a better world,” Lesser writes, “I dream of men fearlessly reclaiming traits that have been coded feminine: feelings, empathy, communication. I dream of women reclaiming traits that have been coded masculine: ambition, confidence, authority. But what I dream of most is women and men mixing it up, blending it all together, tempering power with wisdom, giving muscle and prestige to love and nurture. That’s my dream. I hope this book gives voice to yours and helps you weave the new stories the world is waiting for.”

Elizabeth Lesser’s bestselling books include Broken Open: How Difficult Times Can Help Us Grow and Marrow: Love, Loss & What Matters Most. She is the co-founder of Omega Institute, has given two popular TED talks, and is a member of Oprah Winfrey’s Super Soul 100.

When did we as women start trying so desperately to tame our feelings, our bodies, our ambition? In this powerful and beautiful book, Elizabeth Lesser brings us back to the earliest stories that convinced us to silence our voices, and then forward to a place where we trust ourselves to lead our lives — and the world.

—Glennon Doyle, #1 New York Times Bestselling author of UNTAMED, and founder of Together Rising

Cassandra Speaks is about the power of love instead of the love of power. Elizabeth Lesser speaks to the value of finding your voice in the wilderness of these times, of taking a new kind of hero’s journey—one that replaces violence and domination with deep feeling and courageous communication. What a blessing!

—Iyanla Vanzant, Author, Host, Iyanla Fix My Life (OWN)

Here’s what I learned reading this blazingly wonderful book: All those stories and myths that I unconsciously absorbed? They were wrong. They defined, limited, and contained me.

Now it’s time for women to know the truth and rewrite the tales. Every chapter of this book hit home.

—Sally Field, Academy Award-winning actor and bestselling author of In Pieces

Blessed are the truth tellers, and Elizabeth Lesser is one of them. Cassandra Speaks is astute and witty, tender, and soulful. It’s a tapestry of memoir, cultural commentary, and spiritual fuel that inspires women—and all people left out of history’s storytelling—to reclaim our lineage, to become prophetic alchemists in a world in grave need of healing.

—Jamia Wilson, Executive Director and Publisher of the Feminist Press

Cassandra Speaks is a nod to the power of storytelling in our journey to build a truly equitable society. It lays bare the relationship between gender and power and makes a compelling case for deepening our connections and embracing our collective humanity.

Elizabeth Lesser is a wise and powerful storyteller. Cassandra Speaks helps us understand the roots of women’s shame and guilt and offers a path forward—by changing our stories, we change our lives.

Three tips all organ recipients and their caregivers should know for monitoring organ health, particularly during COVID-19

Approximately 80 people undergo organ transplants each day – these recipients are presented with unique challenges during the pandemic that require them to make substantial changes in ways that they receive medical care from their healthcare professionals. Organ recipients are at higher risk of contracting the virus because the immunosuppressive drugs they take to prevent organ rejection also limit their body’s ability to ward off infection.

As restrictions start to lift, and the world seems more like normal, existing transplant patients would benefit from practical tips that help them remain informed and hyper-vigilant about safety. And as organ transplant surgeries begin to resume at centers around the country, transplant professionals can provide guidance to new patients regarding staying healthy in our “new normal” environment.

Leading transplant surgeon Adam W Bingaman, MD, PhD, Director of Abdominal Organ Transplantation at Methodist Hospital/Specialty and Transplant, is on the front lines during this crisis in his community and is available to provide tips to both patients and their caregivers about keeping safe, during the “new normal.”

•	Seek Care with Telemedicine: Consult with your doctor about available telemedicine programs. Also known as telehealth, telemedicine uses phones, tablets and laptops for virtual medical appointments, remote but in real-time, with healthcare professionals.
•	Evaluate Caregivers’ Risk: In addition to transplant patients being hyper-vigilant of their own health, they must also monitor their caregivers’ exposure to the public. If a caregiver needs to go into public areas– for example, if they are an essential worker – then they should take necessary precautions.
•	Inquire About Home Blood Draws: Transplant patients undergo frequent blood tests in labs or hospitals to monitor for the health of their transplanted organs. There are at-home services that A service allows patients to receive home blood draws from trained technicians called phlebotomists to access for organ rejection:
•	Dr. Adam Bingaman, will be available to discuss what transplant patients can expect during COVID-19 and to share helpful tips on ways to protect a transplanted organ. Additionally, CareDx CEO Peter Maag – the company behind RemoTraC – is available to discuss widespread usage of the service during COVID-19, and the company’s ongoing commitment to addressing patient needs.

The amazing changes intermittent fasting does to your body and brain
Business Insider

Stars like Beyonce and Hugh Jackman have spoken out about following intermittent fasting plans to get in shape. How does intermittent fasting work? Here’s what actually happens to your body and brain when you fast. Following is a transcript of the video. How long has it been since you last ate? People who fast intermittently often eat within an 8-hour block, leaving 16 hours of fasting in between. During that 16-hour stretch, their bodies undergo an important change that sets them apart from Read the full story

I am writing to invite you and your choir to join Music Changes the World, a new initiative of the Foundation for Small Voices (FSV), and become involved in the power of many voices joining together to make a difference.

FSV is a not-for-profit organization committed to the idea that music can empower, change, and influence lives, especially for young people. For over 15 years, we have been responding to the call from voices all over the world, and today’s requests for help from choirs and programs in jeopardy are more numerous and urgent than ever.

We are inviting you and your choir, along with thousands of choirs worldwide, to join the beginning of our initiative, with each choir pledging just $100.

Our goal is to raise a minimum of $500,000, with 100% of these funds going directly toward providing music for youth on all continents. It is only through the power of each voice in our global choir community that we can make a change. Choirs who donate more than $100 will have an opportunity to contribute to a general fund that will help those choirs who would like to participate but are unable to make a financial contribution. We are so grateful for your participation by sending your donations to: The Foundation for Small Voices, P.O. Box 1880, Brookline, MA 02446.

Your choir members will have an opportunity to touch lives around the world, sharing the joy they feel in making music together, and to become part of a global network of choirs that care about and support both choral music and each other. We all do this work because we know that music can change a child’s life, and that the more children who are touched by music, the better the world will be.

We hope that you will join our voices to change the world through music.

With deepest gratitude,

Jim Papoulis and the Foundation for Small Voices

Patterns are encoded in the human experience,
encrypted in the anecdotal evidence of our behavior
and decoded here in the map of time.

The Machine Age is Ending and the Industrial Revolution will no longer define our future.

The Map of Time is our navigational guide through the lessons of history and our lead to the future.

We are Catching Up With The Ancients who knew the keys to our future.

Physical, Emotional, and Intellectual energies progress through their four seasons of development, and points of chaos, to bring change to the nation.
