On 28 April 2023, the book “Reflections on Earth Trusteeship. Mother Earth and a new 21st-century governance paradigm,” edited by Justin Sobion (Ed.) and Hans van Willenswaard (Ed.), was launched in Bangkok. 4. Share examples from Costa Rica that have been contributing to Planetary Well-being in different realms.

5. Expand our consciousness, understanding and vision on the importance of Planetary Well-being and to consider the implications of that to education.

Le invitamos a que nos acompañe y se registre a la Conferencia que estamos organizando titulada “Poniendo el bienestar planetario en el centro: un llamado para convertir nuestra conciencia en acción” que se llevará a cabo el 1 y 2 de diciembre del 2022, en nuestro Centro de Educación de la Carta de la Tierra, ubicado en el campus de la Universidad para la Paz. Estamos organizando este evento especial como parte de nuestra Cátedra UNESCO sobre Educación para el Desarrollo Sostenible con la Carta de la Tierra. Puede registrarse aquí.

Esta conferencia reunirá a académicos, empresarios y personas de la sociedad civil de diversos países, con el propósito de estimular el debate y la colaboración sobre el tema de nuestras contribuciones al Bienestar Planetario con los siguientes objetivos:

1. Explorar más a fondo el concepto de Bienestar Planetario, basándose en investigaciones e iniciativas anteriores.
2. Evaluar el progreso de nuestras contribuciones hacia la salud y el bienestar planetario para la gran comunidad de vida y las generaciones futuras.
3. Identificar y compartir ejemplos de políticas, decisiones y acciones generadas por los países durante los últimos 30 años que han contribuido al Bienestar Planetario y considerar qué se puede aprender de ello.
4. Compartir ejemplos de Costa Rica que han estado contribuyendo al Bienestar Planetario en diferentes ámbitos.
5. Expandir nuestra conciencia, comprensión y visión sobre la importancia del Bienestar Planetario y considerar las implicaciones de eso para la educación.
6. Establecer redes y forjar colaboración para seguir desarrollando formas de evaluar y medir nuestras contribuciones al bienestar planetario.

WHO: The Traveling Guitar Foundation, a nationwide 501(c) (3) non-profit organization to help keep music education programs alive in schools. Founded by acclaimed guitarist / songwriter Damon Marks in 2010, the Traveling Guitar foundation has worked with 30,000 students in over one hundred schools nationwide by donating musical equipment such as guitars, amps, drums and cables, as well as providing an eight week guitar curriculum to schools that are struggling to keep their arts education programs alive. In May 2013, Damon Marks and his Traveling Guitar Foundation team of musicians completed its first USO Tour to donate similar musical equipment to military schools and support the troops and their families abroad in Germany, and just recently confirmed, TGF has been invited back for another USO Tour in 2014. Throughout the years, major recording artists such as Alicia Keys, Swizz Beatz, Darryl “DMC” McDaniels, Melanie Fiona, Leon Thomas III, Ariana Grande, Victoria Justice, Mariah Carey, Michael Bolton and Rick Springfield have all donated their time and energy to the Traveling Guitar Foundation.

On November 13th, at 11AM UTC/GMT, Earth Charter International is hosting a webinar titled “Climate Change Science, Policy and Ethics: Towards Warsaw and beyond.” The panelists include former Earth Charter Council member and co-Chair Professor Brendan Mackey from Griffith University (Australia) and youth climate leader Juliette Decq (CliMates, France). The Earth Charter Center for Education for Sustainable Development is accepting applications for its January 20th – 24th, 2014 executive programme “Education and Values: Teaching What Really Matters.” This course is intended for educators at all levels and those interested in learning to use the Earth Charter for sustainability education. Hundreds of Medical Staff and Patients will Now Have Access to Clean Water Each Year

 A team from EDGE Outreach, a Louisville-based organization that provides clean drinking water to developing communities and disaster environments around the world, just completed the installation of a water sanitation system at Bethany Hospital in Shillong, N.E. India, where hundreds of medical staff and patients will now have access to clean water. Kurtis T. Daniels, Vice-President and Director of Training & Field Operations for EDGE, led the team that worked closely with hospital engineering staff and locals to train them on maintenance of their existing iron removal system and the installation of two EDGE M-100 Chlorine Generators. The two water sanitation systems will provide Bethany Hospital with up to 60,000 liters of safe water each day, making this the largest single-site project ever completed by EDGE.

Previously, the hospital’s water source was not being treated properly and it was being stored in a contaminated concrete cistern full of iron particulate. After completing testing and gathering data, Daniels supervised the cleaning and repairs of the hospital’s existing equipment. The 14′ long x 12′ wide x 14′ deep concrete cistern was emptied, cleaned and inspected. Then, the team was able to refill the cistern with water and “shock” chlorinate the cistern with chlorine generated by the two new M-100 Chlorine Generators, using salt (sodium chloride) purchased locally in Shillong, N.E. India and two 240v AC / 12v DC transformers.

“I was invited to Bethany Hospital to consult with the staff leaders about some of their water issues, and it quickly became apparent that they were not using their iron removal system as it was designed to be used,” says Daniels. “After a few days of evaluating the situation and researching solutions, I came up with a plan and discussed it with David Sailo, Hospital Administrator, and his father Dr. John Sailo, Hospital Owner. They were both very excited about the simplicity of the solution, and wanted to know if it was possible to pull off the plan in my remaining time in India. My answer was yes of course, so we got started right away. If I needed labor, an electrician, a welder, or anything else, they would arrange for it to happen within the hour. The Sailos realized the impact safe water would have in the hospital, so we all worked hard for eight days to make it happen.”

 EDGE Outreach’s M-100 Chlorine Generator Kit uses ordinary salt (sodium chloride) and a 12-volt car battery to simply and safely produce chlorine gas. When the gas is injected into contaminated water, it is highly effective in killing disease-causing pathogens. The M-100 Chlorine Generator can produce up to 38,000 liters of safe water each day, which is enough to provide 10,000 people with drinkable water on a daily basis. 

 The World Health Organization states that every year more than 3.4 million people die as a result of waterborne diseases, making it the leading cause of death around the world. The majority of victims are young children under the age of five.

Earth Charter +10 is a yearlong celebration of the tenth anniversary of the completion of the Earth Charter, which was launched at The Hague Peace Palace in June 2000. Events to celebrate and engage people with the Earth Charter will be taking place around the world throughout 2010.

Earth Charter US is inviting Americans to join the global celebration by organizing EC+10 gatherings in their homes and communities on November 2 in conjunction with the major EC+10 Event in Ahmedabad, India. Throughout this year we will facilitate online interactive conversations among Earth Charter supporters in the US to help develop and promote EC+10 gatherings next November.

We invite you to take part in an online Earth Charter regional gathering that will take place this Thursday, 8 April at 10:30am Eastern Daylight Time, where we’ll start discussing our plans for this historic celebration.

Earth Charter International is encouraging four informal regional meetings (one in each major region of the world) that will bring together Earth Charter youth groups, affiliates, some partners and council members with the following purpose:

Know more about those individuals and organizations working with Earth Charter in the region.
Have a short discussion about Earth Charter activities in 2010 (specifically on the Earth Charter +10 anniversary).
Share views regarding the Earth Charter strategy for gaining recognition for the Earth Charter at the UN.
These meetings will be executed in an online multimedia platform, which has been already used for Earth Charter online courses. To join the meetings, you need high speed internet connection; also web-camera and microphone are useful if you want to join the discussion. In case you don’t have those, you can still participate through the text chats. To enter the platform, please follow the steps on the “EC+10 Meeting Room” webpage. This will be open half an hour before our meeting Thursday, 8 April at 10:30 am.
