Sun safety habits are important all times of year, and that includes in the winter. Winter activities, such as snow skiing, can result in significant exposure to ultraviolet (UV) radiation from the sun – the leading cause of skin cancers – as UV rays reflect off surfaces, even on cloudy and hazy days. This winter, sun exposure may be a special concern as people spend more time outside, due to COVID-19.

Of particular concern is melanoma, a form of skin cancer. When diagnosed in its early stages, melanoma can be treatable, but it may come back in 20-30% of patients. And in its advanced stages, melanoma can be deadly.

As COVID-19 Cases Continue to Increase in Many US States, Doctors Are Looking to Prepare
Families for What They Can Better Control – The Seasonal Flu

While the number of people infected by the flu each year fluctuates based on a variety of factors such as virus strains and characteristics of the person being vaccinated, the CDC findings suggest that about 8% of the United States population contracts symptomatic flu illness every year. However, this flu season will be different than those of the past, as this year the US is also navigating the COVID-19 pandemic.

Many questions and anxieties remain surrounding the global pandemic, including when a vaccine will be available, whether a second wave is coming, or even when the first wave will end. This year, an important action that parents can take for their families is to talk to a healthcare provider about getting a flu vaccine. While some people regularly get a flu vaccine, others do not. There are several vaccine options available, even for those who prefer a needle-free option. The CDC does not recommend one flu vaccine over another. It is important to speak to your healthcare provider to determine which vaccine is right for you and your loved ones.

Chicago native, George Goetschel has emerged on the scene, not only as an accomplished musician, but as a talented improvisational actor as well. His two passions came together, resulting in his Grammy Nominated CD, 21 in the Moment, a collection of 21 improvised musical poems composed and performed by Goetschel. And while the CD may have been recorded twenty years into his career, Goetschel’s musical talents date back to the 70’s.

Goetschel hit the road, touring for nearly two decades alongside of musicians who accompanied legendary jazz greats Miles Davis, Dizzy Gillespie, Charlie Parker and Ramsey Lewis. In addition, Goetschel performed with Metropolitan Opera tenor, Edward Ruivenkamp and in prominent jazz clubs throughout Chicago.

Goetschel’s immense piano and performing talents have captured the attention of major publications including The Chicago Tribune, The Sun Times and The Chicago Reader, all of whom have praised his skill and originality. Few musicians have mastered Goetschel’s command of piano and trumpet/flugelhorn. Fewer still have had their work acknowledged by the Grammy Association. Music critics are not the only ones taking note of George Goetschel. Many prominent medical professionals have recognized the healing and spiritual benefits of his music.

Goetschel’s gift as a powerful, charismatic performer led him to film and stage, working with director John Hughes and actors Jim Belushi, Chris Farley and Tim Meadows. And while his talent would have allowed him to pursue both disciplines, Goetschel’s main focus remains his first love, his music. “USCIS is proud to collaborate with Mayor de Blasio and the Mayor’s Office of Immigrant Affairs in a meaningful community partnership to help permanent residents learn more about citizenship and the naturalization process,” said USCIS Director Léon Rodríguez. “The Statue of Liberty is one of our nation’s greatest symbols of welcome, while the public libraries are the city’s most welcoming resources. Now more than ever, New Yorkers can begin their journey to U.S. citizenship at their local libraries. It is fitting that we sign this agreement with the city so close to Ellis Island, and with its own rich history as a beacon for new Americans.”

New York City and the New York public library systems have supported immigrants for many years; however, this initiative formally establishes “New Americans Corners” in all branches of the Brooklyn Public Library, New York Public Library, and Queens Library systems. These libraries will support permanent residents by offering citizenship and English as a Second Language classes, along with tools and resources to help them prepare for the naturalization interview and test.

“These new, creative partnerships will spread our message far and wide that the City is on the side of new Americans, and we are ready to help immigrants who are eligible to achieve U.S. citizenship,” said Mayor Bill de Blasio. “We know that citizenship opens up opportunities – opportunities to vote, to get a better job, to feel more like a part of the community – and we want to support our immigrant friends and neighbors however we can.”

As the largest city in the United States, New York is home to immigrants from more than 190 countries. Since 2004, more than 1.1 million permanent residents have become U.S. citizens in the New York City metropolitan area.

USCIS and the City of New York also plan to:

Provide citizenship information through the City of New York and public library websites;
Expand community partnerships to hold naturalization information sessions throughout the City of New York;
Offer training on the naturalization process to library staff members; and
Raise public awareness of immigration services scams.

New York is USCIS’ fifth municipal partner, joining Los Angeles, Chicago, the Metropolitan Government of Nashville and Davidson County, and Atlanta.

NEW YORK— El Servicio de Ciudadanía e Inmigración de Estados Unidos (USCIS, por sus siglas en inglés) y la Oficina del Alcalde de la Ciudad de Nueva York han unido esfuerzos para fortalecer esfuerzos relacionados a la educación y concienciación sobre la ciudadanía en la ciudad. El nuevo esfuerzo de colaboración comenzó hoy como parte de la firma de una Carta de Acuerdo de Colaboración entre el Director de USCIS, León Rodríguez y el Alcalde de Nueva York, Bill de Blasio. EL acuerdo permanecerá en vigor hasta el 31 de diciembre de 2018.
