Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is one of the most common psychiatric diagnoses in adults that affects ~1 in 16 adults and 1 in 10 children in the U.S. The condition is defined as a persistent pattern of inattention and/or hyperactivity-impulsivity that can interfere with daily life.

ADHD symptoms can include inattention (like struggling to pay attention or stay organized), hyperactivity (like being restless or talking excessively) and impulsivity (like interrupting or acting without thinking). However, ADHD symptoms aren’t always universal, especially when it comes to men and women. These symptoms can have a serious impact on those living with it and can lead to people having a hard time performing daily activities or fulfilling work responsibilities because of symptoms.

Despite ADHD being a 24/7 chronic disorder, there are options for those living with the condition to help manage symptoms, which can include a combination of behavioral management techniques as well as medication. When it comes to treatment options, there is no one-size-fits-all, and sometimes it takes trying several treatment options to figure out which works. For people with ADHD, the first step is in recognizing symptoms and having open and honest conversations with a trusted healthcare provider.

Now For First Time in 12 Years There Are Updated Clinical Practice Guidelines for RLS Treatment

Restless Legs Syndrome (RLS) is a disruptive sleep-related movement disorder characterized by a strong urge to move one or both legs (and sometimes the arms), usually accompanied by an uncomfortable feeling in the legs.  rls.org

The condition is common and impacts 2-3 % of adults in the United States.

RLS is most prominent in the evening or at night and symptoms may get better with movement. This often leads to sleep disruptions that impact quality of life and can lead to difficulty falling asleep or staying asleep, the urge to get out of bed to stretch or move their legs, fatigue or daytime sleepiness, behavior or mood changes, difficulty paying attention, remembering things or contextualizing as well as depression or anxiety.

Now, for the first time in 12 years, the American Academy of Sleep Medicine (AASM) has published an update to its Clinical Practice Guidelines for the treatment of RLS. These guidelines may have a major impact on how people with RLS are treated with the goal of finding the most effective treatment for symptom relief.

Dr. John Winkelman, MD, PhD, Chief of the Sleep Disorders Clinical Research Program in the Department of Psychiatry at Massachusetts General Hospital will be available to discuss the latest advances in RLS treatment guidelines and what patients and physicians should be aware of.

Liver cancer is the sixth most commonly diagnosed cancer worldwide and third-leading cause of cancer-related deaths in the United States.1,2 Hepatocellular carcinoma, or HCC, is the most common type of liver cancer, yet more than half of patients are diagnosed at advanced stages of the disease often when symptoms first begin to appear.3,4 Historically, the prognosis for advanced HCC has been poor, with only 7% of patients surviving up to five years after diagnosis.4

But today, there is reason for optimism. Advances in research and medical innovation are signaling a shift in patient expectations, offering hope for more time for patients navigating their unresectable HCC or uHCC diagnosis. Here to explain the progress being made in the treatment landscape is Dr Shroff [shrawf] with the University of Arizona Cancer Center.

BIO:
Rachna T. Shroff, MD, MS, FASCO, is associate director of Clinical Investigations and co-leader of the Gastrointestinal Clinical Research Team at the University of Arizona Cancer Center (UACC). She also is a professor with tenure in the Department of Medicine, Chief of the Division of Hematology and Oncology, and Medical Director for the Oncology Service Line. Dr. Shroff also served as Associate Dean for Clinical and Translational Research for the University of Arizona College of Medicine – Tucson; 2021 – 2024. She came to UACC from MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston, where she was on faculty from 2010-18 after completing her medical oncology fellowship there.
Research Interests
Dr. Shroff is a clinical and translational investigator focused on developing novel therapies for pancreatic and hepatobiliary cancers. She holds multiple positions nationally due to her expertise in these areas, including serving as the Hepatobiliary Subcommittee co-chair for the Southwest Oncology Group (SWOG) and as Chair for GI ASCO 2025, a meeting sponsored by the American Society of Clinical Oncology focused on gastrointestinal cancers. Most recently, she was elected to serve on the ASCO Nominating Committee. She also is a member of the Scientific and Medical Advisory Board for the Cholangiocarcinoma Foundation.

Dr. Shroff has led numerous clinical trials focusing on pancreaticobiliary tumors and is the national PI for SWOG 1815 which investigated a triplet chemotherapy regimen as a potential new standard of care for biliary cancers. This is based on a phase 2 study she led that is now published in JAMA Oncology. Dr. Shroff has been invited to speak at national and international meetings on topics related to targeted therapies for pancreatic and biliary cancers and has numerous peer-reviewed publications in this area.

Subsequently, Harmony joined the Global Clinical Safety and Pharmacovigilance team at GSK, where she provided safety strategy and governance for several large global clinical development programs in the pharmaceutical space. She then led a large, global team overseeing the safety aspects of GSK’s large Classic and Established Medicines portfolio. From there, she joined the GSK Consumer Health business, where she spent three years as the Chief Medical Officer. There is now a new treatment option for the estimated 2 million people in the United States living with moderate-to-severe plaque psoriasis1,2,3 whose symptoms may make day-to-day life more challenging. For those that aren’t familiar with psoriasis, it is a widely prevalent, chronic, systemic immune-mediated disease.4

And up to 90% of patients with psoriasis have psoriasis vulgaris, also known as plaque psoriasis,5 which is characterized by distinct round or oval plaques typically covered by silvery-white scales.

One of the challenges that both doctors and patients face is that despite the availability of therapies, many people living with plaque psoriasis in the United States are untreated or undertreated.5,6

But good news has arrived. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has officially approved a new treatment for adults with moderate-to-severe plaque psoriasis who are candidates for systemic therapy or phototherapy.

Dr. April Armstrong, dermatologist and clinical investigator in one of the treatment’s trials and Associate Dean and Professor of Dermatology at the University of Southern California, alongside Leah M. And that’s exactly what they’ve done. After researching potential treatment options Jordan and his family decided to enroll him into a clinical trial for a new treatment for patients with Duchenne muscular dystrophy. The family had so much hope that this could help their son.

Now, Jordan and his family are celebrating the success he’s had in the clinical trial for the treatment which was received Accelerated Approval by the FDA for Duchenne patients who have a specific mutation like Jordan. His mom says it’s been incredible to watch all the positive changes he’s been experiencing, during the four years since he’s been receiving the treatment. Jordan who is now 12-years old, says he tries to make every day the best day ever.

Jordan is one of an estimated 10,000 boys in the U.S. with this rare disease. Early signs of Duchenne include delayed ability to sit, stand or walk. Patients face increasing loss of mobility and by adolescence many require the use of a wheelchair. In teenage years patients begin experiencing problems with heart and lung function that leads to serious, life-threatening complications.

Laura McLinn talks about her son Jordan’s journey and how she and her family approach every day and never gave up hope. She’ll also discuss how she has become an advocate for helping others with Duchenne muscular dystrophy and will offer advice to other parents about options available that can help.
