Every October, the Army observes Energy Action Month to raise awareness of the critical role that energy resilience plays in our everyday lives. Whether you’re a Soldier in the Army Reserve, parent, student or community member—we can all work together to affect change in our communities. The small changes we implement at work and at home can add up to significant energy savings.

This year, the Army Reserve’s theme is “Readiness Through Resilience,” highlighting the integral link between mission capabilities and energy availability. From the electricity that powers facilities, to the fuel that powers vehicles, energy touches nearly every aspect of the force. This is why the Army Reserve is investing in resilience technologies, such as microgrids and energy storage, and hybrid tactical vehicles. Access to uninterrupted energy is a core enabler of national defense.

Threats to energy are on the rise as we continue to experience more frequent and damaging climate hazards and extreme weather events. But we can all make small changes to reduce energy and water consumption to help protect America’s energy future.

Personal resilience is just as important as Army resilience. Some simple ways all Americans can conserve energy include:

Choose ENERGY STAR® certified models when you purchase electronics and appliances, choose.
Take advantage of all technology has to offer: LED light bulbs, smart meters, energy efficient appliances and electronics, etc.
Change your heating and air conditioning system’s filters regularly.
This fall, weatherize your home to eliminate air leaks and add insulation to make your home more energy efficient and comfortable.

Join Colonel Martin Naranjo, Director, Army Reserve Installation Management, Directorate, Office of the Chief Army Reserve to learn more about the energy conservation efforts of the Army Reserve. He’ll also discuss how we can all implement changes to conserve energy and save money and resources.

The Army Civil Affairs Regiment helps military commanders and staff work with local authorities and populations while also assisting and supporting the civil administration of a unit’s area of operations. This month the Army Reserve is saluting Soldiers in honor of the Civil Affairs Regiment’s 68th anniversary.

Established on August 17, 1955, the Civil Affairs Regiment has served as the “eyes and ears” to foreign military and civil organizations. These Soldiers engage and partner with communities around the world, to increase stability, enable local governments, and improve quality of life for civilians.

This regiment’s work extends beyond humanitarian assistance as Civil Affairs Soldiers are the Special Operations community’s warrior-diplomats. As persuasive and diplomatic negotiators, Civil Affairs Soldiers work on the ground to ensure the U.S. interests are on the table and have a strong position when bargaining with foreign governments. They also protect civilians and reduce the root causes of instability around the world.

National Engineers Week gets underway on February 19th – which coincides with the birthday of President George Washington – America’s first engineer. Native Americans have a proud legacy of military service, dating all the way back to the Indian Wars in the 1600s. These Soldiers have served with honor, dedication, and distinction and continue a long legacy of professionalism and selfless service.

As we celebrate Native American Heritage Month, the Army Reserve recognizes the importance of inclusivity and understands the value individuals bring through their lived experiences. America and its people have changed throughout history, but the spirit and culture of indigenous people can be seen throughout society and our Army Reserve.

This Veterans Day, the Smithsonian will be honoring their military service with the formal dedication of the National Native American Veterans Memorial.

For some Army Reserve Soldiers, their mission extends beyond land operations. Every day Soldiers take to the skies with careers in aviation and aerial defense. Army Reserve crew members perform a multitude of missions, including transporting troops and personnel, distributing supplies and equipment, directing search and rescue missions, providing combat support, and more in support of the Army’s mission here in the United States and around the world. This National Aviation Week, the Army Reserve commemorates the achievements and innovations of Soldiers in this field.

The Army Reserve has a range of opportunities in the aviation community. Most notably, Army pilots are responsible for flying fixed-wing aircraft, helicopters, and drones. However, careers in Army aviation also include aviation operations specialist, air traffic control, aircraft electricians, helicopter mechanics, aircraft structural repair, and flight paramedics.

It takes a team of highly specialized professionals to make aviation missions successful. The skills and hands-on training Soldiers gain in an Army aviation and aerial defense career can’t be matched anywhere else. Energy Action Month in October is a time to bring awareness to the goal of conserving energy in every aspect of our lives. Everyone is a part of the fight, and the small changes Americans implement at work and at home can add up to significant energy savings.

From the electricity that powers facilities to the fuel that powers vehicles, energy touches nearly every aspect of the U.S. Army Reserve mission. As extreme weather events like tornadoes, hurricanes and wildfires increase, so does the threat it imposes on Army Reserve readiness.

This is why the U.S. Army Reserve is focused on energy and water resilience, or the uninterrupted access to these resources, to ensure Soldiers can maintain operations while also supporting federal agencies during natural disasters or other times of disruption. The U.S. Army Reserve Energy and Water Program targets investments that make facilities sustainable, modern, efficient, and affordable so they may remain operational in the face of power outages, water shortages, and other issues brought on by climate change and cyberattacks.

Threats to energy are constantly on the rise. We must all take action to reduce energy and water consumption to protect America’s energy future. Personal resilience is just as important as Army resilience, and conservation is a key element of both.

Some simple yet effective changes to remember for all Americans:

Powering down lights/electronics when they are not in use

Turning on energy saving modes on copiers/printers

Using natural light whenever possible

We spoke to Colonel Daniel Cederman, Director, Army Reserve Installation Management Directorate, will be available to outline how the U.S Army Reserve is increasing energy and water resilience at facilities across the nation through innovative solutions. He’ll also discuss how the public can similarly do their part to reduce energy waste.

BIO: COLONEL DANIEL L. CEDERMAN Director, Army Reserve Installation Management Directorate

Colonel Daniel L. Cederman enlisted in the United State Army Reserve in June, 1993, and was commissioned as an Officer through the Reserve Officers Training Corps at Rochester Institute of Technology, Rochester, NY in 1997. He is currently serving as the Director of Army Reserve Installation Management for the Office of the Chief of Reserves in Ft. Belvoir, VA where he is responsible for the strategic planning and resourcing of all Army Reserve facilities, and manages the Army Reserve Military Construction program. COL Cederman’s previous assignments include: Combat Support Equipment Platoon Leader and Executive Officer in the 642nd Combat Support Equipment at Fort Drum, NY; Battalion Maintenance Officer, 2nd Engineer Battalion at Camp Castle, Korea; S3 Plans Officer in the 14th Engineer Battalion, deployed to Iraq in 2003 in support of 4th Infantry Division during Operation Iraqi Freedom. In 2004, COL Cederman transitioned to the U.S. Army Reserve and became Company Commander of 3-414th Infantry (Training), 104th Training Division and then mobilized as a Civil Affairs Team Bravo (CAT-B) Leader for the 402nd Civil Affairs Battalion, Tikrit Iraq, in support of 3rd Brigade, 82nd Airborne Division. Subsequent assignments include Chief of ROTC Operations for the 104th Training Division, Fort Lewis, WA; Mobilization and Readiness Chief for the 416th Theater Engineer Command, Darien, IL; Professor of Military Science at Hofstra University, Hempstead, NY; and Chief of Community Planning and Stationing at U.S. Army Reserve Command, Fort Bragg, NC. COL Cederman holds a BS in Computer Engineering from Rochester Institute of Technology, a MA in Organizational Leadership and Design from Chapman University, and a MA in National Security Strategy from the National War College, National Defense University, D.C. His military education includes the Engineer Officer Basic and Advanced Courses, Command and General Staff College (ILE), the Civil Affairs Qualification Course (Mobilized), and National War College. COL Cederman’s awards include the Bronze Star Medal (2nd Award), Meritorious Service Medal (3rd Award), Army Commendation Medal (3rd Award), Army Commendation Medal (for Valor), Army Achievement Medal (2nd Award), Parachutist Badge, Air Assault Badge, Combat Action Badge, and Sapper Tab. Each year, millions of Americans face the reality of living with a mental illness. Part of that reality may also include living with the stigma and negative attitudes associated with mental health care, which can pose a significant barrier for individuals to seek help.

The issues surrounding mental health also impact Soldiers serving in the Army Reserve. These men and women face the stressors that come with holding down a civilian job along with the responsibilities of school, family, and being a U.S. Army Reserve Soldier.

In order to help combat the problems surrounding mental illness, confiding in others can be a great comfort and help for those suffering from psychological health issues.

Helping address these issues with Soldiers is not only important to them, their careers and their families, but also to the nation and the Americans that they serve.

However, often those in the military may choose to try and handle these types of problems on their own. That’s where the Army Reserve Psychological Health Program can serve a crucial role.

The trained psychological health professionals who are part of this program are passionate about delivering world-class behavioral health services. They offer clinical assessment and referrals for mental health issues to achieve and sustain the most resilient and mentally fit force in the nation.

We All Play a Part in Energy Conservation
October is Energy Action Month. It’s the time of year when we turn our attention toward the importance of energy conservation and resiliency. The call to save energy can reach everyone this October, from Soldiers to civilian employees to families. The U.S. Army Reserve is leading that call because conservation advances their mission, protects communities and empowers Soldiers to charge ahead.

From the electricity that powers Army Reserve facilities, to the fuel that powers their vehicles, energy touches nearly every aspect of the Army Reserve’s mission. Conserving power can help protect our energy future.

However, we all face threats to our energy security; from increasing global demands to natural disasters, fluctuating fuel costs and innovative adversarial attacks like cyber weapons. Conservation helps ensure Soldiers have the energy they need, when and where they need it, to accomplish their missions – at home and abroad, now and in the future. The Army Reserve is also focused on prioritizing energy and water security requirements to ensure Soldiers always have available, reliable power and water to continuously sustain critical missions.

Energy Action Month is an opportunity for the Army Reserve Energy Program to help the public understand the important role everyone can play in energy conservation and resiliency and offer practical, smart energy tips that everyone can implement in their daily lives.

Simple ways for everyone to reduce their energy footprint include:
 Weathering your home to eliminate air leaks and adding insulation
 Replacing your incandescent light bulbs with energy efficient compact fluorescent lights (CFLs) or light emitting diodes (LEDs)
 Creating a more energy efficient office by using natural light wherever possible
 Powering down computer monitors at end of each day
 Unplugging electronics that aren’t in use for extended periods and using power strips
 Recycle packaging materials like paper and cardboard, as we continue to increase shipping supplies to our homes
 Adjusting your thermostat to 68 degrees during the fall and winter and 78 degrees in the spring and summer

Colonel Daniel Cederman, Director, Army Reserve Installation Management Directorate will be available to help your audience learn more about reducing their carbon footprint. COL Cederman will also discuss the energy conservation innovations employed by the U.S. Army Reserve and how the public can similarly do their part to reduce energy waste.
