504-578-6685ABOUT THE FESTIVAL CREATIVE DIRECTOR, DONALD HARRISON JR.

New Orleans-born saxophonist 2022 NEA Jazz Master Big Chief Donald Harrison Jr. is a

musician and composer whom master musicians consider a master of every era of jazz, soul, and

funk, and a composer of orchestral classical music. A genius according to fellow music geniuses

like Eddie Palmieri and Mike Clark, his alma mater, Berklee College of Music, awarded

Harrison an Honorary Doctorate in 2021. In the HBO drama “Tremé”, Emmy-winning director

David Simon created two characters to portray how Harrison innovated new styles of music. He

appeared as an actor/musician in nine episodes of “Tremé,” in Oscar-winning director Johnathon

Demme’s film “Rachel Getting Married,” in Spike Lee’s “When The Levees Broke”

documentary, and Marvel’s “Luke Cage.” Harrison is also the recognized Big Chief of the

Congo Square Nation in Afro-New Orleans culture and was Chiefted in 2019 by Queen Diambi

Kabatusuila from the Democratic Republic of Congo, Africa.

Harrison honed his experiences playing with legendary artists such as Roy Haynes, Art Blakey,

Eddie Palmieri, Dr. John, Lena Horne, Dr. Eddie Henderson, Miles Davis, McCoy Tyner, Dr.

Lonnie Smith, Ron Carter, Billy Cobham, Chuck Loeb, The Headhunters, hip-hop legends

Digable Planets, Guru’s Jazzmatazz, The Notorious BIG, and The Chicago Symphony Orchestra.

He has performed with over 200 jazz masters and innovated three influential styles of jazz. At

nineteen years old, Harrison created a modern jazz take on the New Orleans second-line tradition

and introduced his composition, “New York Second-Line,” to the jazz world in 1979. By the

mid-80s, he had created the sub-genre of Nouveau Swing, a distinctive sound that blended the

swing beat of modern jazz with hip-hop, funk, and soul music. In the ’90s, Harrison recorded hits

in the smooth jazz genre. He then began exploring music through the lens of quantum physics in

2000.With “Quantum Jazz,” Harrison expanded music from a two-dimensional state into a

four-dimensional state. He has since mentored artists as diverse as Christian “Chief Adjuah”

Scott, Darius “Deezle” Harrison, Jonathon Batiste, Esperanza Spaulding, Trombone Shorty, and

The Notorious BIG, just to name a select few. He remains one of the world’s foremost authorities

on the musics housed under the popular name of “jazz.”

In 2024, Harrison will perform and release his new recordings “Magic Touch,” “Congo Square

Suite,” and” The Art of Passion” from his Omniverse Music multi-genre singles concept.

“If there is one message that echoes forth from this conference, it is that human rights are women’s rights….And women’s rights are human rights.” – Hillary Clinton, at the 4th UN Conference on Women, Beijing 1995.

This conference was the birth of The Beijing Platform for Action, the most progressive blueprint ever for advancing women’s rights. Our founders were in Beijing 25 years ago, and every day since we’ve continued to call for the recognition of the fundamental human rights of women.

25 years later and gender equality is far from being realized. Every five years since 2000, Equality Now has highlighted explicitly sex discriminatory laws that need to be reformed in our Words & Deeds report.

Today we’re releasing our 5th Words & Deeds report and we need your help.

YOUR WORDS & DEEDS TO DO LIST:

? In the Democratic Republic of the Congo, the law says the husband is head of the household.

The event will be hosted by comedian Eddie Kadi and will feature an exclusive performance by the legendary Lokua Kanza. Music by DJ Hardy Indiigo, photography by Richard Foulser, art by Congolese painters, jewelry and fashion by talented African designers.

Guest speakers will include former prosecutor of the International Criminal Court Luis Moreno-Ocampo; humanitarian and daughter of Muhammad Ali, Khaliah Ali, who placed the first stone of the GMF school in the Congo; Kara Gerson, Executive Director of the Voss Foundation which partnered with GMF to create two fresh-water wells; Joe Whinney, CEO of Theo Chocolate, who has just collaborated with Ben Affleck to produce a fair trade organic chocolate bar using Congolese cocoa; Dr. Amy Lehman, Founder of the Lake Tanganyika Floating Health Clinic in Congo; and fitness expert Holly Rillinger from Flywheel, who will talk about her recent trip to the GMF school to create a sports program.

About the Georges Malaika Foundation

The Georges Malaika Foundation (GMF) is a non-profit organization dedicated to unlocking the potential of African girls and their communities in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) through education.

Named in memory of Noëlla Coursaris Musunka’s father, Georges, and the Swahili word malaika, for ‘angel,’ GMF empowers through education. GMF is dedicated to the advancement of African communities by providing educational opportunities to young girls. In 2011 GMF finished construction on their first Girls’ School in the DRC. 152 girls are enrolled and receive a fully comprehensive program including free tuition, school supplies, uniforms, and two healthy meals a day. In 2012 GMF built two fresh water wells as part of a collaborative effort with the Voss Foundation, and is now providing clean drinking water to the entire community. GMF’s latest project is a partnership with FIFA to build a community center that will function as a base for sports, health, education and enterprise.

About Noëlla Coursaris Musunka

Noëlla was educated in Belgium and Switzerland, and after achieving a degree in business management, she moved to London and broke into the world of international modeling.
