Early Detection is Key to Reducing the Chance of Serious Outcomes of
Coronary Artery Disease (CAD) and Peripheral Artery Disease (PAD)

www.vascularcures.org

When most people think of heart disease, their association is with coronary artery disease (CAD), where fatty deposits and plaque can build up in the arteries that carry blood from your heart through the body. But artery disease can affect more than just the heart. The limited blood flow caused by artery disease can be dangerous, leading to blood clots and a lesser known but very serious disease called peripheral artery disease (PAD).

CAD is the most common type of heart disease and is the greatest cause of morbidity and mortality in the U.S.1 Approximately 18.2 million adults over age 20 are living with CAD in the U.S.2 PAD affects an estimated 20 million Americans,3 yet only approximately 8.5 million are diagnosed.4 If left untreated, CAD and PAD can increase the risk of serious health outcomes such as heart attack, stroke,5 and – in the case of PAD – acute limb ischemia or even a lower limb amputation.6

It’s important to be aware of the potential connection between these two artery diseases. If you have CAD, you may have an increased risk of PAD – and vice versa.6 In fact, more than 40% of individuals with CAD also have PAD.1

Further, these conditions have overlapping risk factors – including hypertension (high blood pressure), diabetes and smoking (even formerly smoking).6 In fact, smoking is the most common preventable cause of PAD.7 Up to 90 percent of people with PAD have a history of smoking,8 and smokers have a 4x greater risk of PAD than nonsmokers.9

Early detection is key to reducing the chance of serious outcomes. Knowing your risk of CAD and PAD – and talking to your doctor – are important first steps.

Dr. Veita Bland, renowned hypertension specialist and family physician, and Pamela Parker, PAD patient and passionate advocate for artery disease awareness, discusses the importance of early detection, intervention and management of CAD and PAD.

IT’S HEARTHEALTH MONTH AND AN IMPORTANT TIME TO TALK ABOUT ARTERY DISEASE.

[ALT, if live or airing before February 1: HEART HEALTH MONTH IS JUST AROUND THE CORNER AND IT’S ANIMPORTANT TIME TO TALK ABOUT ARTERY DISEASE.]

ARTERY DISEASECAN AFFECT MORE THAN JUST YOUR HEART AND EARLY DETECTION IS KEY TO REDUCING THECHANCE OF SERIOUS OUTCOMES.

HERE TO TALKABOUT WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT CORONARY ARTERY DISEASE (C-A-D) AND A RELATEDCONDITION, CALLED PERIPHERAL ARTERY DISEASE (P-A-D), ARE FAMILY PHYSICIAN ANDRENOWNED HYPERTENSION SPECIALIST, DR. VEITA (“Veeta”) BLAND, ALONG WITH P-A-DPATIENT AND ADVOCATE, PAMELA.

BIO’S:

WHAT’S AT THE HEART OF A DECISION FOR PATIENTS WHO MAY NEED STENTS?
Understanding the right questions to ask about stents can have a meaningful impact on patient health

In the last 20 years, treatment options have proven so commonplace and effective in treating coronary artery disease (CAD), the most common type of heart disease, that many patients spend little time asking doctors about treatment advances and benefits. They instead limit their questions to economic or logistical matters, but what they should be asking is how quickly they can get back to their daily lives.

In fact, a recent Harris survey showed that most Americans have little information about stents until they develop CAD. So what are the other questions that patients should be
asking? What are the latest developments in stent technology? What benefits do these advances offer patients? Who are the best candidates?

Knowing the right questions to ask proved to be of special significance for CAD patient Shawna Dukes. A combination of active research and persistence with doctors enabled Shawna to ask the right questions, which ultimately saved her life. After consulting with a number of physicians who could not determine the cause of her extreme fatigue and overall discomfort, she finally found answers from her interventional cardiologist. He determined that getting a stent that promotes faster healing was the right treatment option for her, and one that gave her back control of her health again.

Shawna is just one of the more than 15 million Americans affected by CAD.[i] For the many others affected by CAD, understanding advances in stent technology can be the first step in becoming an active, knowledgeable advocate for your health.

Shawna and her interventional cardiologist Dr. Colin Barker of Houston Methodist Hospital shared their personal experience, provide an overview of this evolution in stent technology, and helped to answer the toughest questions surrounding the role of stents.

Dr. Daryl Gioffre is a chiropractor, alkaline lifestyle expert, health coach, certified raw food chef, triathlete, ultra-marathoner, author, and lecturer who uses innovative technology and cutting-edge nutrition to achieve and maintain an OPTIMAL level of health and energy.

Dr. Daryl’s dedication began when his own athletic career was restored through the power of chiropractic following a serious injury he sustained while playing soccer for the United States Under 20 Men’s National Soccer Team. Passionate about his work, Dr. Daryl’s ultimate reward is helping people breakthrough barriers and plateaus in their health that have been holding them back from living a life filled with energy and vitality.

A former sugar addict turned health machine, Dr. Daryl knows firsthand what it takes to overcome adversity and challenges in your health. His approach is one of moderation, not deprivation, and is an inspiration to his patients as he ‘walks the talk’ everyday to higher levels of health, fitness, and energy. His specialty is uncovering the root causes of chronic illness, using a comprehensive yet simple set of steps, making healthy changes more convenient and sustainable.

Dr. Gioffre has been practicing chiropractic for 14 years, and opened the Gioffre Chiropractic Wellness Center on the Upper East Side of Manhattan in 2004. In 2013, Dr. Gioffre founded AlkaMind, with the goal of optimizing individual’s health and energy by simplifying the pursuit of an alkaline lifestyle. AlkaMind’s focus is on the ONE UNIVERSAL CONSTANT regarding health: the more alkaline your body THE BETTER, the more acidic THE WORSE.

Call Dr. Gioffre today to find out how he can help you live your best life!
