I had an interesting conversation today with a senior corporate executive. As we wrapped up, she said something that made me realize we really need to clarify that the Institute for Sustainable Development is trying to break through with new concepts that the current frame of talking about community shocks and stresses doesn’t take into account:

   “It’s a shame you focus so much on disasters.”

At ISD, we actually don’t.

Our mission is grounded in the opposite idea: communities shouldn’t have to endure a disaster to get the resources, attention, or leadership they need to become stronger.

What we focus on is community continuity—reducing the harm from future disruptions and strengthening resilience every single day.

Businesses already understand this. They don’t build “Business Emergency Plans.”They build Business Continuity Plans because interruptions cost money, customers, and competitiveness. Continuity is practical. It’s strategic. It’s how organizations stay viable.

Communities deserve the same logic.

BIO:
John O. Beckner, R.Ph.

John is a pharmacist consultant with the National Community Pharmacists Association. Most recently, he served NCPA as Senior Director of Strategic Initiatives where he helped independent community pharmacies develop diversified revenue streams and maximize patient care activities. In his current role, John continues to be involved in several diabetes and immunization related activities, and he hosts Independent Rx Forum, NCPA’s podcast. He is a staunch supporter of innovative community pharmacy practice, especially with respect to immunizations. During his tenure as Director of Pharmacy and Health Services for Ukrop’s Super Markets, the company received numerous awards for excellence in immunizations, including the Immunization Champion and Pinnacle Awards from APhA.  John is a member of the Virginia Pharmacists Association, of which he served as president in 1996-1997. He received the 2014 APhA-APPM Distinguished Achievement Award in Pharmacy Management and the 2015 Bowl of Hygeia Award for outstanding community service, sponsored by APhA and NASPA. Most recently John received the Ed. D. Spearbeck Virgina Pharmacist Service Award for 2024.
John holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in biology from Wake Forest University and a Bachelor of Science degree in pharmacy from VCU/ MCV. He is on the board of directors of the Virginia Pharmacists Association Research and Education Foundation, the Board of Trustees of the MCV Foundation, and the VCU School of Pharmacy National Advisory Council.  John has served on the board of the Central Virginia Chapter of the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF), the board of CrossOver Healthcare Ministry, the Health Practitioners Monitoring Committee for the Virginia Department of Health Professions, the board of Health Quality Innovators, and the Virginia Board of Pharmacy. John serves on several industry advisory boards including the Novavax Advisory Board and the Drug Store News Editorial Advisory Board. He is a luminary for CPESN VA and has been involved with the network since its inception.
John and his wife Pam have 3 children, 2 grandchildren, and 2 chocolate rescue labs!

Silvia Taylor

Silvia Taylor is the Executive Vice President and Chief Corporate Affairs and Advocacy Officer at Novavax. Karin Wagner Bio
Karin has led marketing acquisition programs for various organizations, including CaringBridge.org and UnitedHealthcare. She now owns a marketing agency specializing in lead generation, based in St. Paul, Minnesota where she lives with her husband and two boys. Karin has been surviving and thriving with Lupus for 13 years and works to help others with autoimmune diseases live a higher quality of life. Karin strives to expand treatment options for people with Lupus and eventually reach a cure.

Alexia Papavasilakis
Alexia is a New York-based artist who, in Spring 2021, will graduate from Parsons School of Design with a BFA in Illustration. “You Got This, Kid!: Words of Advice for Young Leaders” is the first full-length book that her work has been published in, but over the past couple of years she has done editorial for Slate Magazine and Bias Journal of Dress Practice. Aside from that Alexia works on commission and occasionally displays her work in gallery spaces across New York City. Sustainability is an issue that always struck her interest, so from being a conscious consumer to being a conscious producer of art, she is willing to lend a hand to the environment in any way she can.

Woodstock came out of the time.

DoorDash & NY Urban League Partner to Support Black New Yorkers

Partnership will provide direct relief, resources for Black workforce, Black-owned businesses

New York, NY (November 12, 2020)—The New York Urban League (NYUL) and DoorDash today announced a partnership to provide direct relief to Black-owned businesses and restaurants through NYUL’s COVID-19 African American Family Relief Fund, support for NYUL’s workforce development programming and expanded access to low-barrier-to-entry earning opportunities like earning on the DoorDash platform through Dashing, and expanding support for Black-owned businesses. The partnership will build on NYUL’s 100-year history of civil rights work.

With an array of synergies between the organizations, NYUL & DoorDash are partnering on several engagement opportunities including three key initiatives:

1. Direct relief in the age of COVID: DoorDash will contribute to NYUL’s COVID-19 Family Fund to support black owned business, restaurants, and NYUL programming.
2. Workforce Development: DoorDash will partner with the New York Urban League to promote and support NYUL’s existing workforce development programming, counseling and referrals to help un- and underemployed individuals become job ready and take advantage of meaningful employment opportunities, as well as raising awareness among NYUL members of low-barrier-to-entry earning opportunities like Dashing through member education.
3. Expanding support for Black-owned businesses: ​NYUL will work with DoorDash to expand DoorDash’s Black-owned business program to NYUL members. In addition, DoorDash will work with NYUL to identify opportunities for DoorDash to support NYUL’s programming through providing gift cards or discounts for DoorDash orders. This will enable the NYUL to access free or discounted meals for Urban League events and programs.

Highlights of the New York Urban League’s Covid-19 Response Work

African American Family Relief Fund: NYUL’s Relief Fund for African American children and families provides direct cash grants of up to $1000 to assist families with rent, utilities and other bill payments during the pandemic.

Educational Town Halls: The New York Urban League has organized and hosted a series of Virtual Town Halls with local, state and federal officials, civil rights leaders and medical professionals, serving to provide information and to dispel myths and untruths about the coronavirus. Five such Town Halls have been held, including “The COLOR of COVID19” NYUL Virtual Town Hall on Health Disparities, Beyond the Classroom: Resources and Support for Virtual Learning and Support for Small Biz.

Highlights of DoorDash’s Support for Black-Owned Business

This summer, DoorDash announced a number of new initiatives and actions to support Black-owned businesses and stand for justice. These include the following: 

• Highlighting “Black-owned” businesses on both the DoorDash and Caviar platforms to help customers easily support Black-owned restaurants. A month later, DoorDash saw a 275x increase for these searches over the previous month.
• Donating $1 million, with $500,000 going to Black Lives Matter and $500,000 to create a fund to be directed by the Black@DoorDash Employee Resource Group (ERG) towards state and local organizations.
• Establishing a Dashers of Color Council to advise the company on issues facing Black Dashers, including safety and access.

New Book Reveals How To Achieve Financial Freedom Within 5 Years!

Even a successful couple earning six-figure annual incomes don’t have true financial freedom. David and Leslie Shippy went from being a middle-class couple to obtaining financial freedom in just a few short years.
