Chaplains help families build resilience as they deal with unique challenges while also supporting Army Reserve leaders as they manage difficult decisions that ensure the safety and future of our country.

Army Reserve Chaplains help Soldiers develop a personal spiritual practice – whatever that may look like for them – and provide them with tools for support in times of stress and hardship. A holistically healthy Soldier is better able to use their unique skills and talents to make a real difference in people’s lives.

Some of the ways Chaplains make a difference include:

Providing marriage and family counseling
Serving as a staff chaplain at a medical facility
Becoming an instructor at one of several Officer service schools
Tending to the spiritual needs of every Soldier both at home and while on deployment

Blake. “While many of the characters are real, the history is pure, and the ideas behind the story are very real and important. People need to see what slavery was really like, through the eyes of those who were slaves.”

The series examines three co-existing 19th-century American cultures – the defeatist South’s response to the post-Civil War era of reconstruction, the former Black slaves who are attempting to adjust to life as freedmen, and the noble nomadichunter-gatherer society of the Plains Indians fighting to defend and to maintain their way of life.

“I have all of my adult life, served and loved this country,” says Blake, a US Navy veteran. “I think it is important that readers learn about our nation’s history, especially what it was like a century-and-a-half ago when the country was ripped apart by a civil war, slavery, and the United States’ 19th century policies towards Indians…Native Americans.”

About Marvin V. Blake
Following his graduation from Baltimore’s Southern – High School, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy. During his more than six years of active duty, in the Navy, Marvin attended and graduated from the US Navy’s Hospital Corps School, and the US Navy School of Medical Technology.
Following his discharge from the Navy, he earned his undergraduate Degree from Long Island University, and his graduate Degree from New York’s New School University. His long professional career was spent as a senior hospital administrator of several prestigious teaching medical centers in NYC and Nassau County. “Peace Corps Week is about sharing the volunteer experience and the incredible cultural exchange that results from Peace Corps service,” Hessler-Radelet said. “I encourage both current and returned volunteers to participate in Peace Corps Week to share the world with their local communities and bring Peace Corps service to life.”

Hessler-Radelet will participate in Peace Corps Week events starting Tuesday, Feb. 25 at the University of Miami, where she will speak with students and community members about the inspiring work of Peace Corps volunteers today. She will be joined by University President Donna Shalala, who has been an active supporter of the Peace Corps since completing her service in Iran 50 years ago. On Thursday, Feb. 27, the Acting Director will deliver remarks at the National Press Club in Washington, D.C. on the Peace Corps in the 21^stcentury, and later that day, she will talk with students at the University of South Florida via live video conference.

New this year, Peace Corps’ Office of Third Goal and Returned Volunteer Services invited current and returned volunteers to get involved in Peace Corps Week by participating in a Video Challenge and a Classroom Challenge designed to support Peace Corps’ Third Goal of sharing other cultures with Americans. In the lead up to Peace Corps Week, current and returned volunteers have organized more than 525 classroom events to share the Peace Corps experience, engaging nearly 35,000 students across 49 states. Videos showcasing some of the most remote locations in the world were also submitted to Peace Corps’ #PCWeek2014 YouTube playlist, offering a cultural window into life abroad.

Peace Corps volunteers travel to the farthest corners of the world where they work toward sustainable change while gaining hands-on experience and developing the skills employers are looking for now more than ever. Volunteers who serve with the Peace Corps return home with a global perspective as well as cross-cultural, leadership, community development and language skills. He may also be considered to be a part of the “Shriver political family”, since his ancestor David Shriver was a delegate of Frederick County, Maryland who signed the Maryland Constitution and Bill of Rights at Maryland’s Constitutional Convention of 1776, and his father is Sargent Shriver, the first director of the Peace Corps upon its establishment by President John F. Kennedy on September 22, 1961, a former ambassador to France and the 1972 Democratic Vice Presidential candidate. Mark Shriver has written a memoir about his father, A Good Man: Rediscovering My Father, Sargent Shriver.[4] His sister, Maria Shriver, is a former journalist and the former First Lady of California (she was married to former Governor of California Arnold Schwarzenegger until mid-year 2011).

Shriver attended high school at the Georgetown Preparatory School, North Bethesda, Maryland. Afterward, he earned a bachelor’s degree from the College of the Holy Cross in 1986, and a master’s degree in public administration from Harvard University in 1993.

From 1989 to 1994, he was a member of the Maryland Juvenile Justice Advisory Council. Starting in 1991, he also served on the Board of Directors of the Public Justice Center. From 1991 to 1992, he served on the Maryland Governor’s Task Force on Alternative Sanctions to Incarceration. From 1994 to 1995, he served on the Maryland Governor’s Commission on Service.
 
In 1994, he was elected to the Maryland House of Delegates, the lower house of the Maryland state legislature, representing Montgomery County, Maryland, District 15, and was reelected in 1998. He did not seek reelection in 2002 and was succeeded in that post by Brian Feldman.
 
In addition to serving as a delegate, he worked on the Task Force on the Maryland Prepaid-Tuition Savings Program in 1996, and on the Task Force to Study the Governance, Coordination, and Funding of the University System of Maryland from 1998 to 1999. He was a Founder and Executive Director of The Choice Program, an at-risk youth intervention project of the Shriver Center at University of Maryland, Baltimore County established in 1998. He then served on the Advisory Board on After-School Opportunity Programs from 1999 to 2003. From 2000 to 2001, he served on the Judith P.
