Leslie is a psychotherapist with a private practice in New York City, and she has been a Consultant for the foster care system for seventeen years. Leslie has been a Program Director for programs for at-risk youth in the South Bronx, for six years created and implemented long-term intensive arts and after-school programs in inner city schools for at-risk and hard to reach youth, developed and led staff development trainings in creativity, and for two years pioneered a poetry project at Rikers Island Correctional Facilities for Men and Women. In a world where technology exceeds our wildest expectations, we are still without tools with which to unlock and discover the most precious and fundamental parts of ourselves.  Leslie Robinson, the creator of the Keep It Real game, invented this game to provide a space where people can come together to explore, discover and share their innermost thoughts, feelings and desires, to create connection which has meaning, to help people to communicate deeply, and to celebrate the extraordinary diversity of the human psyche.

The Keep It Real game asks real questions you have always wanted to ask but never dared to, and real questions you have always secretly wanted to talk about such as: Do you believe in “an eye for an eye” or turning the other cheek, and why?; What do you think keeps love alive?; What does freedom mean to you?; What is something you would like a second chance at? Think of a race different from your own – how would your life be different if you had been born into that race?; Would you rather be a famous rock star or a great politician, and why?; Have you ever had a spiritual experience? Explain.

The rules of the game are simple: you move around the circular track responding to questions in five categories (determined by the roll of the dice): Personal, The World, Fantasy/Imagination, Reflection and Action/Description. In the Interaction category you engage in unusual and enjoyable interactions, and in the Challenge category you are prompted to move out of your comfort zone, and to be glad you did.  You have opportunities to win gold coins in the challenge category, and from your fellow players. Regardless, the sad fact is that divorce rates are high. Many Americans are choosing to endure the pain and loss that will inevitably result from a divorce rather than work on their commitment to their partner. Despite the statistics, divorce is not the best possible option in every circumstance. Issues in a marriage can be effectively resolved if a couple is willing to work together. A divorce is a long and difficult process which should not be entered into lightly. The consequences of litigation can be painful at best. The proceeding could negatively impact the financial, emotional and social well being of both parties. Prior to rushing headlong into the process, every couple should carefully consider the reasons they feel a divorce is necessary and the options available. There are circumstances where a divorce might be unavoidable. Remaining in a marriage with a partner who is physically or emotionally abusive or an addict is problematic. More often than not cycles of abuse and addiction will continue creating strain and inevitable harm to both spouses.

Additionally, if one spouse is adamant about divorce and cannot be persuaded otherwise, chances are the marriage will end. He will find a way to implement a divorce regardless of the feelings of his spouse. On the other hand, a divorce should not be the result of an argument which occurs naturally during the course of a marriage. Disagreements are bound to occur at times and most can be resolved in an amicable way without litigation. Divorce is not always the best option and can be avoided. A marriage is a work in progress. Both spouses should be committed to making their relationship work effectively. Taking time alone together, such as a romantic trip, a date night or a dinner at home without friends or family, can work wonders to rekindle the flame. Couples should realize that the intense desire that was present in the initial stages of their relationship will have been replaced with a more comfortable camaraderie. Additionally, physical appearances change with age and needs and opinions develop over time. Recognizing the changes in your partner and allowing your relationship to develop as a result is beneficial. On the other hand, many couples find it difficult to resolve major issues in their life together.

Differences of opinion about money, children, lifestyle and religion can be devastating to a marriage if not properly resolved. Again, both spouses need to be willing to work together for the benefit of their marriage in order for any resolution to work effectively. Communication with each other as well as outside parties is an effective tool in such circumstances. Marriage counselors are often useful in helping a couple resolve issues and remain married. A professional is an objective observer who can listen effectively to both sides in a nonjudgmental manner. Marriage, although based on love, is a contract and more business oriented than most people realize. It is effectively an agreement between spouses to love and support each other as well as share economic benefits that may accrue. A married couple can be entitled to a share in a spouses estate, health insurance coverage under their partners policy and other economic incentives, that would not be available to their single counterparts. Prior to making the commitment to spend a lifetime with another person, it is important to consider the economic and emotional results of your decision. Lives move faster and information is more accessible than ever before. As a society, we are more effective and productive however we do not always take the time to consider the effects of our actions on our personal lives.

A romantic spark or physical attraction can be mistaken for love. Couples do not find the time to spend together prior to their wedding in order to form a strong basis for their relationship. A marriage is easier to arrange today than it ever has been. A quick trip to Las Vegas or to the local courthouse is a cheap and quick alternative to planning the traditional marriage ceremony. Unfortunately, rushing into marriage without considering the consequences can lead to serious problems. Taking the time to know the person you are hoping to spend the rest of your life with can help to reduce the chances of divorce.

Many factors should be considered prior to making the decision to get married. First, it is important to understand your own values.

What is your relationship to money?

Are you a spendthrift or a saver?

Do you feel that money is something to be used for mere enjoyment or saved and invested for the benefit of your heirs?

Do you want children? If so, do you feel their concerns are primary or secondary to your own?

Should your income be used primarily for their benefit?

Is religion, education or employment status important?

If you understand your own ideals you are in a better position to determine whether the person you are planning to marry is the right one for you. Although no two people think exactly alike, forming a relationship with someone who has similar values to your own is so much easier than struggling with a person whose ideals you do not appreciate or understand. Once a marriage has occurred, a certain amount of work is involved to maintain the relationship. Invariably, disagreements arise. Many times, during the course of an argument, couples will say things to hurt each other in the heat of anger that they do not necessarily mean. It is very easy to threaten a divorce when you are not thinking clearly. A divorce is not an easy process and should not be entered into lightly.

It will have a severe impact on your emotional well being, economic situation and overall quality of life. There are circumstances where divorce is the best option. For example, it would not be beneficial to remain in a marriage where abuse, adultery, addiction or criminal activity exist.
