We have invited Brooklyn District Attorney Eric Gonzalez (NYC) who often refers to himself as a “progressive prosecutor,” and speaks largely about his office’s efforts to prevent violence, rather than prosecute it and the nations’ second black Governor of the US, Gov. Michelle Harris TV host of Alive and Well TV has tips on creating a spa day at home –how to create an oasis of relaxation and self-care in your own home.
1.Spray your favorite aromatherapy mist or use a diffuser in the room you want to relax in.
2.De-cluttering your space if needed for a more relaxing vibe.
3.Get your fluffiest towels and robe together and add in some relaxing music. This will give you that wonderful feeling of walking into a spa without leaving your home!
4.Michelle recommends a pineapple-lemon- Black Elderberry wellness shot! Pineapple juice is rich in digestive enzymes, lemon is wonderful at detoxification and Black Elderberry syrup is rich in immune supporting antioxidants (and it tastes great). It’s the perfect pick me up for an at home spa day.
Quick homebased treatments:
Home Facials:
Regular facials are one of the keys to good skin. First, gently clean and exfoliate skin.
Next, every facial needs a nice steam to clear pores. This can be as simple as putting your face over a container that has hot water steaming up.
After steaming, nothing feels better than a mask.
Use a favorite brand or make a simple homemade hydrating mask with aloe, avocado and olive oil.
Combine1 tsp fresh aloe, 1 tsp olive oil and ½ of a totally mashed avocado (it will stay on your face more easily). Apply and rinse after 10 minutes for glowing skin!
The final step in any facial is serums and moisturizer. Apply them and your skin will look like you just left the spa.
Happy Hands and Feet
One of Michelle’s her favorite things when getting a spa treatment is those great gloves and/or booties they use with a rich moisturizer to keep your hands and feet soft.
Wear them with a heavy-duty cream made for the body or hands and feet. Don’t forget the cuticles. Many creams made for the hands and feet will contain essential oils like peppermint. This adds to the therapeutic benefit and smells incredible.
Keep gloves or booties on for an hour while watching television, reading, or relaxing. For super soft hands and feet, wear gloves or booties to bed and wakeup with baby soft skin.
Relaxing bubbles
A tub full of bubbles is the perfect way to relax and feel calm. Research even shows that taking a bath on occasion helps to decrease stress, fatigue and muscle pain. Look for bubble baths with natural ingredients and essential oils. Ingredients like oatmeal and coconut are wonderful for soothing skin. Don’t forget to loofah and exfoliate skin while you soak. Add a cup of your favorite herbal tea for even more relaxation.

Now an Innovative 4-H Program Is Changing That for Millions

The “American Dream” is built on the idea that with hard work, upward mobility and success are possible. In our ever evolving and technology dependent society, digital skills and broadband access are necessary tools for achievement.

However, more than 24 million people living in the U.S., including 19 million in rural communities, do not have access to broadband, also known as high speed internet. That leaves a large portion of today’s teens locked out when it comes to high speed internet. This essential service in today’s economy impacts everything from children’s education to their future economic mobility.

Recent research shows that overall, teens without broadband access feel less equipped online with it comes to connecting, creating and learning. The research also shows:

 Almost half of teens surveyed said they’ve struggled to complete homework due to slow internet connections
 Teens without broadband are less optimistic about their social mobility for higher education & careers
 43% of rural teens surveyed plan to leave their hometowns and 34% of those teens cite poor internet connectivity as the reason; which means these towns are losing talent and future innovation.

As leaders in positive youth development, National 4-H Council partnered with Microsoft on the 4-H Tech Changemakers program. The initiative is aimed at closing the connectivity gap in rural areas by empowering teens to bring technology and digital skills to their communities. The program works to position digital skills as a valuable life skill that’s necessary for improving non-urban communities’ path towards economic mobility.

The 4-H Tech Changemakers are working with broadband service providers throughout the U.S., along with community members and civic leaders to help teens gain the digital skills needed to benefit from technology and high-speed connectivity, which includes everything from online safety to computer basics and device training.

On Friday, April 24, join members of the 4-H Tech Changemakers to learn more about the programs being implemented, how they’re helping to bridge this technological gap and make sure that all community members across the country have the tools and skills they need to achieve the American dream.

BIO: Dr. Henrik Klitgaard – Vice President and Fellow, UCB Medicines
Neuroscientist and epilepsy researcher
Henrik Klitgaard, PhD, is currently Vice President, UCB Fellow, Neurosciences Therapeutic Area and is located in Braine-l’Alleud, Belgium. He received a PhD in Human Physiology in 1989 at the August Krogh Institute at the University of Copenhagen, Denmark. During his university career, Dr. Klitgaard worked at the Pasteur Institute in Paris, France, and at Harvard University, Boston, US.

Dr. Klitgaard has published around 100 peer-reviewed original papers, reviews and book chapters, and is a frequent speaker at neuroscience and epilepsy science meetings. His memberships and accolades include a position on the U.S. National Institute of Health’s epilepsy advisory committee and membership on the Neurobiology Committees of both the International League Against Epilepsy and American Epilepsy Society. In 2013 he was the recipient of the Lifetime Accelerator Award of the Epilepsy Therapy Project and Epilepsy Foundation for his contribution to the advancement of therapies for the treatment of epilepsy.

For more than 25 years, Dr. Klitgaard has conducted antiepileptic drug (AED) discovery in the pharmaceutical industry. He has contributed numerous publications on basic and applied aspects of epilepsy research and has frequently been an invited speaker at epilepsy congresses and meetings. During his career in the pharmaceutical industry, Dr. Klitgaard has been involved in the discovery and development of several AEDs at both Novo Nordisk A/S and at UCB, most notably Levetiracetam and Brivaracetam.

BIO: Loretta – Epilepsy Patient and Advocate
Loretta has a long history of living with epilepsy, from her older sister’s epilepsy to her own seizures as a teenager, to the epilepsy diagnoses of three of her sons. During her own seizures, Loretta struggled with feeling different. Even after she gained greater seizure control by getting serious about taking her various epilepsy medications as directed, something she continues to this day, the stigma lingered.
But the real challenges with epilepsy began when her son Daniel began having seizures as a toddler. The number of his daily seizures skyrocketed and the family had trouble keeping track of his seizures. Although Daniel was on medication, the seizures continued and he began having severe side effects that affected his behavior. Brain surgery and a VNS implant did little to lessen his seizures.
She didn’t give up on finding something that would help Daniel, and eventually worked with his doctor to add a new medication that would control his partial seizures. Today, they’ve found medication that works for Daniel and he is able to live and work more independently.
Despite SUDEP taking the lives of two of her three sons, Loretta has made peace with epilepsy being part of her life. As an Epilepsy Advocate, Loretta hopes sharing her personal experiences will build further awareness and understanding on living well with epilepsy.
