HCP Bio: Dr. James Dugan

Dr. James Dugan is a hematology/oncology specialist, and the physician lead for the transplant and cellular therapy department for Novant Health Cancer Institute in Winston-Salem, North Carolina.

Dr. Dugan was drawn to the field of oncology by the opportunity to improve a person’s life during a difficult time. He believes that to properly treat the whole person and not just the disease, physicians need to engage in active conversations with the patient throughout the treatment process. Dr. Dugan approaches medicine and oncology as a partnership between the physician and the patient.

Dr. Dugan is a member of the American Society of Hematology, as well as the American Society for Transplant and Cellular therapy. His membership in these organizations keeps him up-to-date on the latest research and treatment options in the field.

When he is not seeing patients, Dr. Dugan enjoys time with his wife and three daughters. He is an outdoor enthusiast who enjoys skiing, scuba diving, kite surfing, and long-distance running. He is passionate about the shared human experience and loves meeting new people and exploring new ideas and places.

Patient Bio: Jen

In 2014, Jen was diagnosed with Philadelphia chromosome positive chronic myeloid leukemia (Ph+ CML) in chronic phase (CP).
Prior to her diagnosis, Jen devoted her career to serving others. After dedicating 20 years to running inner-city youth programs, Jen became a social worker, supporting women as they rebuilt their lives after incarceration or experiencing domestic violence.
Jen was actively working as a social worker when she was diagnosed with CML. Unfortunately, her diagnosis required her to step away from her career for a period of time. Working closely with her doctor, she navigated the treatment landscape to find a treatment option that worked for her.
Today, she is a teacher in her rural community, educating K-8 students in a one-room schoolhouse. She is also passionate about sharing her journey and advocating for other adults with CML, helping them access the information and support they need to have meaningful conversations with their doctors and navigate their own patient journeys.

To Help Americans During Critical Operations

Energy Action Month in October is a time to bring awareness to the goal of conserving energy in every aspect of our lives. Everyone is a part of the fight, and the small changes Americans implement at work and at home can add up to significant energy savings.

From the electricity that powers facilities to the fuel that powers vehicles, energy touches nearly every aspect of the U.S. Army Reserve mission. As extreme weather events like tornadoes, hurricanes and wildfires increase, so does the threat it imposes on Army Reserve readiness.

This is why the U.S. Army Reserve is focused on energy and water resilience, or the uninterrupted access to these resources, to ensure Soldiers can maintain operations while also supporting federal agencies during natural disasters or other times of disruption. The U.S. Army Reserve Energy and Water Program targets investments that make facilities sustainable, modern, efficient, and affordable so they may remain operational in the face of power outages, water shortages, and other issues brought on by climate change and cyberattacks.

Threats to energy are constantly on the rise. We must all take action to reduce energy and water consumption to protect America’s energy future. Personal resilience is just as important as Army resilience, and conservation is a key element of both.

Some simple yet effective changes to remember for all Americans:

Powering down lights/electronics when they are not in use

Turning on energy saving modes on copiers/printers

Using natural light whenever possible

We spoke to Colonel Daniel Cederman, Director, Army Reserve Installation Management Directorate, will be available to outline how the U.S Army Reserve is increasing energy and water resilience at facilities across the nation through innovative solutions. He’ll also discuss how the public can similarly do their part to reduce energy waste.

BIO: COLONEL DANIEL L. CEDERMAN Director, Army Reserve Installation Management Directorate

Colonel Daniel L. Cederman enlisted in the United State Army Reserve in June, 1993, and was commissioned as an Officer through the Reserve Officers Training Corps at Rochester Institute of Technology, Rochester, NY in 1997. He is currently serving as the Director of Army Reserve Installation Management for the Office of the Chief of Reserves in Ft. Belvoir, VA where he is responsible for the strategic planning and resourcing of all Army Reserve facilities, and manages the Army Reserve Military Construction program. COL Cederman’s previous assignments include: Combat Support Equipment Platoon Leader and Executive Officer in the 642nd Combat Support Equipment at Fort Drum, NY; Battalion Maintenance Officer, 2nd Engineer Battalion at Camp Castle, Korea; S3 Plans Officer in the 14th Engineer Battalion, deployed to Iraq in 2003 in support of 4th Infantry Division during Operation Iraqi Freedom. In 2004, COL Cederman transitioned to the U.S. Army Reserve and became Company Commander of 3-414th Infantry (Training), 104th Training Division and then mobilized as a Civil Affairs Team Bravo (CAT-B) Leader for the 402nd Civil Affairs Battalion, Tikrit Iraq, in support of 3rd Brigade, 82nd Airborne Division. Subsequent assignments include Chief of ROTC Operations for the 104th Training Division, Fort Lewis, WA; Mobilization and Readiness Chief for the 416th Theater Engineer Command, Darien, IL; Professor of Military Science at Hofstra University, Hempstead, NY; and Chief of Community Planning and Stationing at U.S. Army Reserve Command, Fort Bragg, NC. COL Cederman holds a BS in Computer Engineering from Rochester Institute of Technology, a MA in Organizational Leadership and Design from Chapman University, and a MA in National Security Strategy from the National War College, National Defense University, D.C. His military education includes the Engineer Officer Basic and Advanced Courses, Command and General Staff College (ILE), the Civil Affairs Qualification Course (Mobilized), and National War College. Today, the U.S. Army Reserve is home to over 60 percent of the total force’s critical care nurses, orthopedic surgeons, emergency physicians and obstetricians. The Army Reserve provides the active Army with 306 medical units.

Despite expanded lung cancer screening guidelines, accelerated progress in the treatment of lung cancer and a continued increase in survival rates, lung cancer remains the leading cause of cancer death in the U.S., 2 Almost one-quarter of all cancer deaths are due to lung cancer – more than breast, prostate and colorectal cancers combined.

Due to the complexities of lung cancer, the adoption of personalized medicine is critical to ensuring people receive the right treatment for their specific type of cancer at the right time. However, many people with the most common type of lung cancer—

non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) — are not receiving a fully-informed diagnosis due to a lack of comprehensive biomarker testing that can help identify important characteristics about an individual’s cancer and more precisely inform treatment decisions.

LUNGevity Foundation, the nation’s leading lung cancer-focused non-profit, recently launched No One Missed – a new campaign that aims to increase awareness of comprehensive biomarker testing and empower patients and caregivers to discuss testing with their doctor for a fully-informed diagnosis. 1. PROPOSAL SUMMARY.

The proposal will authorize bonds to fund live feed satellite coverage into every fire station in the state to cut the response time of our honorable firefighters and increase speed and accuracy of advance warning to affected citizens.

2. PROBLEM.

At present most firefighters are on call. Based on research, firefighters too frequently lack access to the latest data regarding fire movements. This results in unnecessary delays for the firefighters to reach critical areas. It also results in firefighters not being able to alert citizens in a timely and efficient manner.

3. SOLUTION.

This proposal addresses the need for immediate live feed coverage into every station so that the firemen can carefully monitor their geographic area. Surveillance will include computer signaling of potential trouble spots to be investigated. In response multiple approaches can be initiated including surveillance drones, alerts through smartphone apps or live crews for additional protection.

3. Gives the firefighters the ability to respond more efficiently by being deployed to target an fight fires in their geographic area.
