The U.S. Army Reserve joins the nation in celebrating National Hispanic Heritage Month by recognizing the contributions of Hispanic Americans to the Army, society and culture. Today, just as in generations past, Hispanic Soldiers can be especially proud of their achievements and embodiment of core Army Values.

The Army Reserve story cannot be told without reflecting on the remarkable impact made by Hispanic Soldiers. Hispanic Americans have a proud legacy of military service dating back to the Civil War. Whether their heritage can be traced to Spain, Cuba, Puerto Rico, Mexico, or one of dozens of other Spanish-speaking countries or cultures, they’ve answered the “call to duty,” defending America with unwavering valor and honor. The theme for the 2022 Hispanic Heritage Month, “Unidos: Inclusivity for a Stronger Nation” underscores the Army’s celebration of diversity and commitment to building high performing and cohesive teams.

Today, more than 17% of America’s Soldiers are of Hispanic or Latino descent, making this the fastest growing segment of the Army. Thousands of Hispanic American Soldiers fulfill vital roles supporting Army Reserve operations around the world, continuing a legacy of professionalism, selfless service and courage that will inspire generations to come.

Battalion Command Sergeant Major (CSM) Anthony Taylor as he discusses notable achievements of Hispanic Americans in the Army Reserve. He will also talk about his Peruvian heritage, his family’s proud history of service and his dedication to helping Soldiers reach their potential.

About the Apollo Theater
The legendary Apollo Theater—the soul of American culture—plays a vital role in cultivating emerging artists and launching legends. Since its founding, the Apollo has served as a center of innovation and a creative catalyst for Harlem, the city of New York, and the world.

With music at its core, the Apollo’s programming extends to dance, theater, spoken word, and more. This includes the world premiere of the theatrical adaptation of Ta-Nehisi Coates’s Between the World and Me and the New York premiere of the opera We Shall Not Be Moved; special programs such as the blockbuster concert Bruno Mars Live at the Apollo; 100: The Apollo Celebrates Ella; and the annual Africa Now! Festival. The non-profit Apollo Theater is a performing arts presenter, commissioner, and collaborator that also produces festivals, large-scale dance and musical works organized around a set of core initiatives that celebrate and extend the Apollo’s legacy through a contemporary lens, including the Women of the World (WOW) Festival as well as other multidisciplinary collaborations with partner organizations.

Since introducing the first Amateur Night contests in 1934, the Apollo Theater has served as a testing ground for new artists working across a variety of art forms and has ushered in the emergence of many new musical genres—including jazz, swing, bebop, R&B, gospel, blues, soul, and hip-hop. Among the countless legendary performers who launched their careers at the Apollo are Ella Fitzgerald, Sarah Vaughan, Billie Holiday, James Brown, Stevie Wonder, Gladys Knight, Luther Vandross, H.E.R., D’Angelo, Lauryn Hill, Machine Gun Kelly and Miri Ben Ari; and the Apollo’s forward-looking artistic vision continues to build on this legacy.

In fall 2020, the Apollo Theater will mark its first ever physical expansion with the theaters at the Victoria, part of the vision for a future Apollo Performing Arts Center. The theaters at the Victoria will support the growth of the Apollo’s artistic programming as it continues to provide a home to artists of color, create an expanded 21st century American performing arts canon, and provide additional educational and community programming in Harlem and beyond. For more information about the Apollo, visit www.ApolloTheater.org.

Support
The Apollo’s 2019-2020 season is made possible by leadership support from Coca-Cola, Citi, Ford Foundation, Howard Gilman Foundation, Jerome L. Greene Arts Access Fund in the New York Community Trust, and The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation.

Public support for the Apollo Theater is provided by the National Endowment for the Arts, the New York State Council on the Arts with the support of Governor Andrew M. Cuomo and the New York State Legislature, and from the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs in partnership with the City Council.

News Release Nov. 9, 2015

USCIS Will Host Naturalization Ceremonies to Honor Veterans and their Families

WASHINGTON—Veterans, service members and military spouses across the country will become U.S. citizens this week as they take the Oath of Allegiance at special Veterans Day naturalization ceremonies. U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services will highlight the sacrifices that military members and their families have made while serving our country. From Nov. 7-13, USCIS will welcome more than 10,000 new citizens in nearly 130 naturalization ceremonies across the country and around the world. Of those being naturalized, more than 255 are veterans, service members and military spouses.

Many current and former military members and their families are eligible for citizenship, including expedited screening and overseas processing, under special provisions of the Immigration and Nationality Act. Since Oct. 1, 2001, when data collection on military naturalizations began, more than 109,000 service members have become U.S. citizens, including individuals serving in Iraq, Afghanistan, South Korea, Germany, Japan and elsewhere. In 2015 alone, USCIS hosted nearly 175 naturalization ceremonies at military installations in the U.S. and abroad.

“On Veterans Day, we salute the men and women who have so courageously served our country and defended the freedoms that it was built upon. Among our brave veterans are thousands of immigrants, many of whom vowed to defend their new home even before they were citizens,” USCIS Director León Rodríguez said. “It is because of their extraordinary sacrifices, and those of their families, that we can enjoy the rights and liberties of living in this great country.”

USCIS has a robust military outreach program that provides information about immigration and naturalization to service members and veterans at military installations, Department of Veterans Affairs hospitals, universities and various military organizations. USCIS also has offices on multiple military installations, including Fort Benning, Georgia; Camp Lejeune, North Carolina; and Joint Base San Antonio-Lackland, Texas. These offices identify recruits who may be eligible for naturalization.

USCIS’ Veterans Day activities this year will feature a naturalization ceremony at the USS Torsk and USS Constellation, located at the Inner Harbor in Baltimore, Maryland, on Nov. 11. During this event, Dan Renaud, USCIS associate director for the Field Operations Directorate, will administer the Oath of Allegiance, and Sgt. Maj. Mercy A. Diez of the U.S. Army Band will be recognized as an Outstanding American by Choice.

Other ceremonies include events at:
· American Heroes Air Show in Orlando, Florida, on Nov. 7.
· Cullman Performance Hall of Tryon Palace in New Bern, North Carolina, on Nov. 11.
· Joint Base Lewis McChord in Seattle, Washington, on Nov. 13.

In addition, 12 recruits will become new citizens at the Marine Corps Recruit Depot in San Diego, California, through the Naturalization at Basic Training Initiative. Developed with the Department of Defense, this program allows enlisted service members to complete the naturalization process during basic training.

USCIS invites new citizens, and their families and friends, to share their experiences from the ceremonies through Twitter and other social media using the hashtag #newUScitizen.

Pablo Raul Alarcon Sr. and Raul Alarcon Jr. of the Spanish Broadcasting System receive The Giants of Broadcasting & Electronic Arts, this prestigious award. Sigourney Weaver Confirms Appearance Women’s Pioneer Virginia Pate Wetter Joins Lineup

The Giants of Broadcasting & Electronic Arts has its 12th anniversary awards luncheon and ceremony in New York’s Gotham Hall on October 16, 2014. Noted actress
Sigourney Weaver will return from work on her most recent movie in England to present a remembrance of her late father, the distinguished mid-20th-century network executive
Sylvester L. (Pat) Weaver Jr., and Virginia Forwood Pate Wetter will be celebrated as a veteran of small town radio and one of an elite group of women who pioneered in the management ranks of what had long been almost exclusively a man’s world.

The announcement of Mrs. Wetter’s election to the prestigious honors event rounds out a roster that now includes the famed talk and game show host Regis Philbin, such eminent entrepreneurs as David Barrett of Hearst Television, Peter Smyth of Greater Media and Pablo Raul Alarcon Sr. and Raul Alarcon Jr. of the Spanish Broadcasting System, the veteran all-network programming standout Fred Silverman, journalists Chuck Scarborough of WNBC-TV New York and Judy Woodruff and Gwen Ifill of the PBS NewsHour. The event will be climaxed by a tribute to Pat Weaver, who as president and chairman of NBC became one of television’s and radio’s most iconic figures from the past, and whose influence continues to this day. Sigourney Weaver’s career includes roles as Ellen Ripley in the “Alien” film series, Dana Barrett in Ghostbusters and Ghostbusters II and Dian Fossey in Gorillas in the Mist. She recently starred in USA Network’s miniseries Political Animals.

The Giants of Broadcasting & Electronic Arts awards program was created in 2003 by the Library of American Broadcasting to identify and recognize distinguished excellence and performance in radio, conventional television, cable TV, the internet and prospectively the social media, as well as those in associated fields. Its honor roll comprises an historic “A-list” of individuals and programs that with the addition of 2014 honorees will number 182.

The full story of the Giants is recommended reading at giantsofbroadcasting.com.

THE LIBRARY OF AMERICAN BROADCASTING (LAB) — located at the University of Maryland — is in its 43rd year of serving as the national information resource for the radio and television industries and the academic communities that rely upon it for depth and expertise. Its collections of historic documents, professional papers, oral and video histories, books and photographs are among the nation’s most extensive. LAB is evolving from a conventional library into a “homepage” for the world at large, no longer confined to responding to constituents one at a time but reaching thousands simultaneously through the Internet. Industry outreach includes lectures, symposia, print and the broadcast media themselves.

Virginia Hubbard Morris, president of Hubbard Radio, based in Minneapolis-St. Paul, is chair of the Library of American Broadcasting Foundation, which created the LAB and is responsible for its direction and fundraising. Donald West, former editor-in-chief of Broadcasting & Cable magazine, is chair of the Giants of Broadcasting & Electronic Arts awards program. The dean of libraries at the University of Maryland is Patricia Steele, and the curator is Chuck Howell. The Library has been honoring leaders in the broadcasting industry annually since 2003. Previous honorees among the honor roll of 170 include such industry notables as Guglielmo Marconi, Philo T. Farnsworth, David Sarnoff of RCA and NBC, William S. Paley and Frank Stanton of CBS, Leonard Goldenson of ABC, entrepreneurs Stanley E. and Stanley S. Hubbard and Lowry Mays, entertainers Bob Hope, Lucille Ball, Jack Benny, Arthur Godfrey and Johnny Carson, and journalists H. V. Kaltenborn, Edward R. Murrow, Walter Cronkite, Paul Harvey, Barbara Walters, Charlie Rose, Bob Schieffer, Brian Williams, Christiane Amanpour, Tim Russert and documentary filmmaker Ken Burns.
