INVOLUNTARY MOVEMENT DISORDER IMPACTS THOUSANDS OF AMERICANS

One in five U.S. adults live with a mental illness. Some people living with a mental health condition may also experience an involuntary movement disorder called tardive dyskinesia (TD). TD is a chronic condition, associated with taking certain mental health medicines (antipsychotics) to treat conditions like depression, bipolar disorder, schizoaffective disorder, or anxiety disorder. It is unlikely to improve without treatment.
Approximately 600,000 people in the U.S. may be affected by TD, yet only approximately 25% have been diagnosed. The condition is characterized by uncontrollable, abnormal, and repetitive movements often seen in the face, torso, limbs, and fingers or toes. It can impact patients socially, emotionally, and physically–these movements can cause worry, frustration, and self-consciousness. According to a survey of 350 patients with diagnosed or suspected TD, patients reported the condition moderately or extremely affected them in the following areas:

Ability to work: 46%

Ability to sleep: 53%

Ability to eat & drink: 35%

Despite the number of people impacted by the condition, many people are still unfamiliar with TD. However, for patients living with the condition, their families, and their care partners it’s important to know they’re not alone.

As of this year, 50 states and Washington, D.C. and various advocacy groups have recognized Tardive Dyskinesia Awareness Week as the first full week of May (May 1-7, 2022) to support people in the U.S. with TD. May is also Mental Health Awareness Month, and as efforts are underway to increase awareness and support for those impacted by mental health conditions, it’s important to remember those living with a mental illness and taking antipsychotics for a prolonged time may develop or already have TD.

Dr. Rakesh Jain, Clinical Professor Department of Psychiatry, Texas Tech University School of Medicine, Austin, TX, will be available to discuss the emotional, physical, and social impact of TD as well as talk about the condition’s signs and symptoms. Dr. Jain will also explain how critical TD Awareness Week is to those living with a mental health condition and TD.

Clinical depression, known as major depressive disorder (MDD), is much more serious than just a case of the holiday blues, and can have a significant negative impact on all aspects of life.

Website for more information:
Spravato.com

In fact, depression is the leading cause of disability in the world, with an estimated 17.3 million American adults experiencing at least one major depressive episode in the past year.1,2

What’s more – one-third of people in the U.S. with MDD have treatment-resistant depression (TRD), meaning they have not responded adequately to at least two different antidepressants of adequate dose and duration in the current depressive episode.3,4

If you or someone you know are living with depression, now is an important time to check in and make sure the right care plan is in place. If symptoms persist after trying several treatment options, a discussion with a doctor may be needed to determine whether it’s MDD or TRD.

Craig Chepke, MD, will be available to discuss the signs of challenging to treat depression and the treatment options currently available. He will be joined by Sally, a patient living with TRD who is currently taking SPRAVATO® (esketamine) CIII nasal spray to help treat her depressive symptoms.

Looking for a guest to bring hope to those who may be discouraged from fighting the good fight to help a family member through these debilitating diseases? Faith McDonald, author of On the Loving End of Crazy: Finding Hope and Help to Face Your Loved One’s Crippling Anxiety and Depression, is that guest!
This book offers hope and help to those who love someone who faces anxiety disorder and major depression. The story starts when Faith’s son Matt begins college; however, instead of attending classes and learning to thrive, he flounders and fails. His life becomes a series of arrests and reckless, self-destructive acts culminating in a suicide attempt. In the wake of his bewildering behavior, Faith worries that his life will never get back on track. She longs for her son to thrive. She aches, prays, and wonders how to intervene.
As Faith watches her beloved son self-destruct, she grapples with challenges that will resonate with readers:
• I feel helpless.
• I don’t know where to get the help I need.
• I’m embarrassed that we need help like this.
• I’m angry with my son.
• I feel furious with my husband–can’t he cope more competently?
• I’m worried that our family will fall apart.
• I feel misunderstood by my church friends and pastors.
How will Faith keep her namesake and family when anxiety disorder and depression masked by substance abuse threaten to destroy Matt’s life? With statistics in 2016 showing that 33% of college students felt so depressed that they found it difficult to function, and the number of students seeking help for anxiety has soared, it’s difficult to fathom.
However, as your audience journey’s along with Faith, they will learn that when life seems like a series of heart-wrenching disappointments, God is powerfully present. Matt’s journey is harrowing, but with faith, prayer, support of friends, and psychological help, he begins to thrive. Faith shares the essentials she learned to encourage anyone with a loved one who battles mental illness.
This story helps your audience to:
• Find Comfort–they don’t face the journey alone.
• Persist in seeking professional help for their loved ones.
• Find the courage to endure the dark days of the illness of their loved one.
• Stop blaming themselves or others for the dark days.
• Share their stories to fight stigma and shame.
• Ask for support from those around them.
I look forward to hearing your interview interest for Faith McDonald and On the Loving End of Crazy soon.
Sandra Shaw Homer is an environmental activist, author, adventurer, and survivor.

She has lived in Costa Rica for the past three decades, where she has taught languages and worked as a translator. For several years she penned a regularly published column, Local Color, for the English-language weekly, The Tico Times.

Homer is the author of three other books: Letters From The Pacific: 49 Days on a Cargo Ship, Journey to the Joie de Vivre, and The Magnificent Dr. Wao.

Finding Hope: A Birthmother’s Journey into the Light by Hope O Baker
Publisher: Lioncrest Publishing (October 21, 2019)

At twenty-one years old, Hope O Baker made one of the hardest decisions a person can make: she placed her son for adoption. She lived with her son’s adoptive mother while she was pregnant and pursued an open adoption. After her son was born, Hope tried to resume her life.

But the difficulty of letting her child go gnawed at Hope. Even though she had it together on the outside—graduating college and excelling in her career—on the inside she was battling a destructive cycle of depression and addiction. When life was at its darkest, Hope managed to find her way back to the light. It’s a journey she continues to this day.

Now, in this love letter to her son, Hope shows how messy and chaotically beautiful adoption can be, by sharing the authentic details of her remarkable story. From her struggles, you’ll see how the community can help you rebuild and be reminded of how important it is to find your voice and speak up for what you need when life hands you unexpected difficulties.

Hope will grip your audience’s attention no matter what stage or type of parenting experience they’ve had. There are many relatable moments that can dispense needed wisdom to new parents, and get knowing nods from those who have had kids and been through the journey of parenthood and now have an empty nest. The amount of value here and the nuggets one can take away are numerous, and each time she speaks, you can find new “ah-ha” moments to grab onto. Hope has been through some very rough emotional turmoil, made some agonizing decisions, and has come through the fire to let us know that she has found her namesake as she emerged from places where she almost lost it.

About the Author:
After placing her newborn son for adoption in 2013, Hope O Baker struggled with depression, addiction, and overcoming the stigma that surrounds birthmothers. In her first book, Finding Hope: A Birthmother’s Journey Into the Light, she shares her story of a successful, open adoption—and all the heartache and light that came along the way. Hope is a passionate advocate for those on all sides of adoption. You can find her online at HopeOBaker.com or follow her on Instagram at @HopeOBaker. Hope visits her son regularly and is a passionate advocate for those on all sides of adoption. You can find Hope online @ hopeobaker.com or follow her on IG, Facebook, Twitter, and Linkedin

The holiday season can be a joyous time of year, but it can also be a stressful time for many people. Whether it’s financial worries over a long gift list, anxiety about difficult family dynamics, exhaustion from juggling a hectic schedule, or loneliness being apart from loved ones due to these unprecedented times, emotions are often heightened at this time of year and mood changes are common.1
Even people with no history of mental illness may feel confused about whether they are experiencing the temporary feelings of “depression” associated with the “holiday blues” or if symptoms may be something more serious that should be discussed with their healthcare provider.
And for the 1 in 5 Americans who are living with pre-existing mental health conditions, research shows that the holidays can be particularly challenging.2 In fact, 64% of people with mental illness report holidays make their conditions worse.1
This can be especially true for people who struggle with certain mental health conditions that can be exacerbated by stress. For those living with bipolar I disorder, for example, stress, sleep disruption, and heightened emotional reactions to their environment—all common around “the most wonderful time of the year”—can trigger both manic and depressive episodes,3,4 so it’s important that people work to manage stress and monitor symptoms closely.
Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner, Dr. Jessica Whelan, discusses why the holiday season can be particularly challenging for people living with mental health conditions like bipolar I disorder, the difference between holiday blues and bipolar I disorder, and a treatment option people living with bipolar I disorder can discuss with their doctors.
Dr. Jessica Whelan is a compensated spokesperson for AbbVie.
Good News speaks to Bert Askwith on his way to work at 103 years young. Bert is our Good News Business Leader of the Month for his tenacity and being a Good Samaritan.

Campus Coach Lines President and Founder Bert Askwith, Honored by ABA Board of Directors
The American Bus Association Board of Directors honored longtime motorcoach owner/operator and
industry legend Bert Askwith at its spring board meeting May 2 in suburban Washington, D.C. The
presentation was made by ABA Chairman Tom JeBran to salute Askwith for nearly 85 years of
continuous service to the motorcoach industry.

In March, Bert turned 102, celebrating his birthday by going to work in Manhattan where he is President of Campus Coach Lines. Bert founded Campus Coach Lines in 1928 while he was a student at the University of Michigan, taking classmates from Ann Arbor to the east coast at a fraction of the cost of rail travel. The company was so successful that he put himself through college with the money he earned. In 1931, while the Great Depression weakened the economy; Bert moved the business to New York City where it continues operations today, 83 years later.

During his long and distinguished career, Bert has served in a variety of high-profile national and
regional industry leadership positions, including a nearly 20-year tenure on ABA’s Board of Directors.
In 2010 the Board made him an honorary lifetime member. Bert also served as the first Chairman of
the ABA Foundation Board of Governors and continues his service to the ABA Foundation as
Chairman Emeritus. Bert also served for six years as the President of the New York State Bus
Association.

Bert is also known for his generous charitable contributions. Among his favorite charities are the
United Way and his beloved University of Michigan in Ann Arbor.

In typical fashion, Bert is always looking ahead, and as he accepted the award, he told his colleagues,
“Thank you for this honor, I am looking forward to working with you for many more years.” ABA Board Chairman Tom JeBran said of his longtime friendship and associate.
