Low vaccination rates among adults puts them at risk for preventable diseases like shingles, a painful rash that develops on one side of the body.[i] Did you know that approximately one in three people in the US will develop shingles in their lifetime?[ii] As a person ages, the immune system is impacted in such a way that the body is less capable of preventing the virus from re-activating and causing shingles.[iii] Anyone 50 years or older – even if you’re a healthy, active person – is considered at-risk for shingles.

Interior designer and gymnastics judge Kathlyn, 54, thought she had an outbreak of adult acne or a spider bite, but soon realized something was wrong when the bumps spread across half her face causing her eye to swell shut. Much to her surprise, Kathlyn’s doctor immediately diagnosed her with shingles, leaving her in pain and unable to spend time with her family. As someone who did not have shingles on her radar, Kathlyn works to educate others and urges them to talk to their doctor or pharmacist about shingles vaccination to help protect against the disease.

Kathlyn and Dr. Len Friedland, Vice President and Director, Scientific Affairs and Public Health, Vaccines, at GSK, will be available to discuss the topic of getting up-to-date on adult vaccinations and details about shingles.

(born March 24, 1940) is an American fashion designer and costumer, best known for his dressing of entertainment icons such as Joan Rivers, Cher, RuPaul, Barbara Eden, Bette Midler, Diana Ross, Judy Garland, Liza Minnelli, Tina Turner, Carol Burnett and Mitzi Gaynor. He was the costume designer for Carol Burnett on The Carol Burnett Show during its entire 11-year run and designed the costumes for its spinoff, Mama’s Family, and for the 1993 television adaptation of Gypsy.

Mackie began his career as a sketch artist for legendary French haute couturier Jean Louis, who is perhaps best known for crafting stage gowns worn by screen legend Marlene Dietrich during her career as a cabaret singer. Mackie and future life partner Ray Aghayan worked with legendary costumer Edith Head in 1961 while working as a novice designer at Paramount Studios. In 1969, Mackie was hired to design costumes for Diana Ross, The Supremes, and The Temptations in the television special GIT:On Broadway.[citation needed]

In 1972, he and Aghayan were nominated for Best Costume Design for “Lady Sings The Blues”, starring Diana Ross. Mackie and Diana Ross continued their collaborative efforts well into the 21st century, with Mackie designing stage costumes for Ross’ 2010 “More Today Than Yesterday” tour.[citation needed] Mackie designed costumes for the Las Vegas Strip-based burlesque shows, Hallelujah Hollywood, which was inspired by the Ziegfeld Follies and ran at the MGM Grand (now Bally’s Las Vegas) from 1974 to 1980, and Jubilee!, which ran from 1981 to 2016. Both productions involve intricate, elaborate costumes and grandiose sets. Images of many of Mackie’s design drawings for these productions are available in the “Showgirls” collection from UNLV Libraries Digital Collections.

Two of Mackie’s best-remembered creations had a humorous aspect. While working on The Carol Burnett Show, he designed a “curtain dress” (complete with a curtain rod across the shoulders) that Carol Burnett wore in Went with the Wind!, a parody of Gone with the Wind. He designed the exotic ensemble worn by Cher at the March 1986 Academy Awards: black stretch pants, a bejeweled loincloth, knee-high boots, a black chainlink top, and a huge feathered Mohawk headdress that was one and a half times taller than her head. Introduced by Jane Fonda with the words, “Wait’ll you see what’s gonna come out here”. “As you can see,” said Cher, “I did receive my Academy booklet on how to dress like a serious actress.”

Mackie designed costumes for Whitney Houston, especially splashy evening gowns which she wore for many years during concert tours and award shows. He was often referred to as “the sultan of sequins” or “the rajah of rhinestones”, known for his sparkling and imaginative costume designs. He has won nine Emmy Awards for his designs, and has been nominated three times for an Academy Award.[citation needed]

Mackie has said, “A woman who wears my clothes is not afraid to be noticed.”

In 1981, Mackie guest starred as himself on two episodes of the television series The Love Boat.

In 2002, Mackie was inducted into the Television Hall of Fame.

Personal life
Mackie was born in Monterey Park, California to Charles Robert Smith and Mildred Agnes Smith. He attended Pasadena City College and Chouinard Art Institute but left without earning a degree from either school. On March 14, 1960, he married LuLu Porter (née Marianne Wolford), a singer, actress, and later an acting teacher. She had given birth to the couple’s only child, a son, Robert Gordon Mackie Jr. (called “Robin Mackie”), the previous year. The couple divorced in 1963. Robin Mackie, a makeup artist, died in 1994 of an AIDS-related illness, predeceasing his parents.

Mackie’s life partner was costume designer Ray Aghayan, whom Mackie had started working with as an assistant. The two worked together through the 1970s, as well as having separate clients. They remained together until Aghayan’s death in 2011.

Major General Shavendra Silva, WWV, RWP, RSP, USP, psc, CR is a Sri Lankan general and diplomat. The current Sri Lankan Deputy Permanent Representative to the United Nations in New York, he was the former Director of Operations, Sri Lanka Army and the General Officer Commanding, 58 Division during the Sri Lankan civil war. Early life Silva was born on 22 June 1964 and had his education at St. Joseph’s College, Anuradhapura, Vijaya College, Matale and St Thomas’ College, Matale. At school he was the band leader of the western band, Captain of the first XI cricket team and Sergeant of the Senior Cadet Platoon, St. Thomas’ College, Matale. Silva is married and has two daughters. Sri Lanka Army Silva joined Sri Lanka Army on 1984 and he was the former Director of Operations, Sri Lanka Army and the General Officer Commanding, 58 Division during the final phase of Sri Lankan civil war. He was a highly decorated Commando officer, being awarded the Weera Wickrama Vibhushanaya, Rana Wickrama Padakkama and the Rana Sura Padakkama at once, a first in the Sri Lankan military history. He was the youngest promoted as a commanding officer. As an officer instructor at theSri Lanka Military Academy (SLMA) in Diyatalawa, he trained the first foreign cadets to attend SLMA and went on to become its commanding officer. During 2002–2004 peace talks he took part in negotiations to open the A-9 Main Supply Route (MSR). With the resumption of hostilities he become the Brigade Commander of the Air Mobile Brigade and later took command of the famous 58 Division and was instrumental in the military capturing several former LTTE strongholds including the Mannar rice Bowl, Vedithalathivu, Nachchikuda, Mulangavil, Devils Point, Pooneryn, Kilinochchi, Paranthan, Elephant Pass, Dharmapuram, Vishvamadu, Suvandipuram, Thevipuram Puthukudirippu, Puthumathalan, Wellamullu vaikkal and the last inch of enemy held Karayamulli vaikkal in the mangroves of Nanthikandal lagoon in the Mullaithivu district. After the end of the war he was appointed as Director of Operations of the Sri Lanka Army and promoted to the rank of Major General. In 2010, he took up position as Deputy Permanent Representative to the United Nations as the only serving army officer to hold such a post at the time of appointment. As at present he holds the rank and title of Ambassador in addition to his post at the United Nations Headquarters.
