A NEW WAY TO MANAGE TYPE 2 DIABETES THAT ELIMINATES INSULIN INJECTIONS FOR MILLIONS OF AMERICANS
Diabetes management has taken a significant step forward following FDA clearance of the Omnipod 5 Automated Insulin Delivery (AID) System, for adults 18+ living with type 2 diabetes, making it the first and only AID system cleared for the treatment of both type 1 and type 2 diabetes.

Type 1 diabetes can’t be prevented or cured. However, it can be detected early through autoantibody screening before any noticeable symptoms arise, before insulin is required, and potentially before any serious complications occur. One such complication is diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA), a serious healthcare crisis that can be life-threatening. Early screening may help people potentially reduce their risk of going through DKA by up to 50%.

There’s a powerful social movement underway called “The 1 Pledge” that includes diverse voices of the type 1 diabetes community. The goal of the movement is to take action and get screened. Anyone can be screened for type 1 diabetes-related autoantibodies. What are diabetes home tests?

Testing blood glucose, also known as blood sugar, is an essential part of your diabetes care plan.

Depending on your current condition, you may need to visit your doctor several times a year for formal testing, according to the American Diabetes Association. You may also need to reach out to your doctor for preventive testing, such as cholesterol checks and eye exams.

37.3 million Americans – about 1 in 10 – have diabetes, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.1 The chronic disease can take a severe toll on an individual’s quality of life, affecting their physical, mental, and emotional well-being.

Some people with diabetes also suffer from painful diabetic peripheral neuropathy (DPN), a deliberating and progressive neurological disorder that affects approximately 30% of the diabetes patient population.2 DPN can be caused when high blood sugar (glucose) damages nerves, most often in the legs and feet, leading to chronic numbness and burning or stabbing pain.

Dr. Silky Patel, an interventional spine, sports and pain management physician in Houston, will be available to discuss the impact of DPN and the latest innovative way to treat the condition. Ms. Farrah Stewart, a patient of Dr. Patel’s with painful DPN and a spinal cord stimulator, will join in the conversation to share her experience and the impact spinal cord stimulation has made in her life.

Conventional medical approaches, such as compression socks, topical creams, and prescription medications, do not always resolve DPN symptoms. But there is hope for these patients. Recently, spinal cord stimulation (SCS) has been FDA approved as a therapy for treatment of painful DPN of the lower extremities. A National Institutes of Health review finds that spinal cord stimulation for painful DPN is an effective and safe option for treatment.3

SCS is a proven long-term and effective therapy for managing chronic pain.4,5
• A spinal cord stimulator is an implantable medical device that works by disrupting the pain signals traveling between the spinal cord and the brain.
• Patients with DPN are 17 times more likely to experience significant pain relief if treated with SCS compared to conventional treatment.6,7,8
• 86% of patients experienced treatment success after receiving SCS therapy for one year.9
• SCS can offer proven long-term therapy for managing chronic pain, with the majority of patients experiencing meaningful pain relief through five years of treatment using the device.9

CKD is a progressive condition and patients with CKD have an increased risk of having heart disease.[1][3] However, most patients don’t know they have CKD, in large part because it is a “silent” disease, with most patients feeling no symptoms until the disease has progressed.[4] In fact, while approximately 15% of US adults are living with CKD, 9 in 10 are unaware they have CKD.[1]

Now, a new treatment option has been proven to help slow the progression of CKD – a huge scientific innovation for CKD patients at risk of progression with and without T2D. This approval is the most significant advancement in the treatment of CKD in over 20 years.

Because CKD may be overlooked until symptoms appear at advanced stages, it is especially important to be aware of risk factors and the serious complications that can occur.[1][5]

CKD tends to get worse over time, so the earlier treatment starts, the better the patient outcomes are. [3]

On May 19, Neil Skolnik, M.D., Professor of Family and Community Medicine, Sidney Kimmel Medical College of Thomas Jefferson University, will be available to discuss the latest treatment option approved by the FDA. Dr. Skolnik will also discuss risk factors and the importance of early detection of CKD.

Whenever I teach clinical medicine to students in the fourth year of medicine, I ask the following question :

What are the causes of mental confusion in the elderly?
Some offer: “Tumors in the head”. I answer: No!

Others suggest: “Early symptoms of Alzheimer’s”. I answer again: No!

With each rejection of their answers, their responses dry up.

And they are even more open-mouthed when I list the three most common causes:

– uncontrolled diabetes
– urinary infection
– dehydration

It may sound like a joke, but it isn’t. People over 60 generally stop feeling thirsty and consequently stop drinking fluids.

When no one is around to remind them to drink fluids, they quickly dehydrate. Dehydration is severe and affects the entire body It may cause abrupt mental confusion, a drop in blood pressure, increased heart palpitations, angina (chest pain), coma and even death.

This habit of forgetting to drink fluids begins at age 60, when we have just over 50% of the water we should have in our bodies. People over 60 have a lower water reserve. This is part of the natural aging process.

But there are more complications. Although they are dehydrated, they don’t feel like drinking water, because their internal balance mechanisms don’t work very well.

Conclusion:

People over 60 years old dehydrate easily, not only because they have a smaller water supply, but also because they do not feel the lack of water in the body.

Although people over 60 may look healthy, the performance of reactions and chemical functions can damage their entire body.

So here are two alerts:

1) Get into the habit of drinking liquids. Liquids include water, juices, teas, coconut water, milk, soups, and water-rich fruits, such as watermelon, melon, peaches and pineapple; Orange and tangerine also work.

The important thing is that, every two hours, you must drink some liquid. Remember this!

2) Alert for family members: constantly offer fluids to people over 60. At the same time, observe them.

If you realize that they are rejecting liquids and, from one day to the next, they are irritable, breathless or display a lack of attention, these are almost certainly recurrent symptoms of dehydration.

COVID-19 has many feeling stressed and isolated, exacerbating mental health challenges across the country.
