JEWISH WISDOM

On Passover we
Opened the door for Elijah
Now our dog is gone.

Jewish Buddhism:
If there is no self,
Whose arthritis is this?

Beyond Valium,
Peace is knowing one’s child
Is an internist.

After the warm rain
The sweet smell of camellias.
Did you wipe your feet?

Her lips near my ear,
Aunt Sadie whispers the name
Of her friend’s disease.

Today I am a man
Tomorrow I will return
To the seventh grade

Testing the warm milk
On her wrist, she sighs softly
But her son is forty.

The sparkling blue sea
Reminds me to wait an hour
After my sandwich.

Jews on safari —
Map, compass, elephant gun,
Hard sucking candies.

The same kimono
The top geishas are wearing:
I got it at Loehmann’s.

Mom, please!
There is no Need
to put that dinner roll In your pocketbook.

Sorry I’m not home To take your call.
At the tone
Please state your bad news.

Is one Nobel Prize
So much to ask from a child
After all I’ve done?

Today, mild shvitzing.
Tomorrow, so hot you’ll plotz
Five day forecast

Quietly murmured
At Saturday Synagogue services,
Phillies 5, Red Sox 3.

Be here now.
Be someplace else later.
Is that so complicated?

Drink tea and nourish life; With the first sip, joy;
With the second sip, satisfaction;
With the third sip, peace;
With the fourth, a Danish.

Wherever you go,
there you are.
Your luggage is another story.

Accept misfortune as a blessing.
Do not wish for perfect health, or a life without problems.
What would you talk about?

The journey
of a thousand miles
Begins with a single Oy.
Zen is not easy.
It takes effort to attain nothingness.
And then what do you have?
Bupkis.

The Tao does not speak.
The Tao does not blame.
The Tao does not take sides.
The Tao has no expectations.
The Tao demands nothing of others
The Tao is not Jewish.

Breathe in, Breathe out.
Forget this and attaining Enlightenment
will Be the least of your problems.

Deep inside you are ten thousand flowers.
Each flower blossoms ten thousand times.
Each blossom has ten thousand petals.
You might want to see a specialist

Be aware of your body.
Be aware of your perceptions.
Keep in mind that not every physical
Sensation is a symptom of a terminal illness.

The Torah says, Love your neighbor as yourself.
Buddha says there is no self.
So, maybe we’re off the hoo

The mysterious and little understood system called guardianship, or conservatorship, burst into the public consciousness in 2021 with the case of pop star Britney Spears. After living under court-ordered restrictions for nearly fourteen years, Spears finally spoke out about her plight: she had been stripped of her civil rights, forced to work, involuntarily medicated, denied the right to freely travel or spend the money she earned, and rejected when she wanted to marry and have a baby.
Britney isn’t the only adult who has lost crucial rights through the guardianship system. An estimated 1.5 and 2 million Americans are currently living under similar court-mandated circumstances. Many of these arrangements for so-called “wards of the court” work out well. But after a yearslong study of the system, author Diane Dimond discovered the number of predatory players appointed by the court to control the life and finances of wards is astounding, and the number of victims is staggering. As Dimond writes in We’re Here to Help, “Consider that every year new guardianships and conservatorships place more than $50 billion under the control of others, and with the average case lasting about six years. . . . Informed critics estimate that predatory players illegally divert multiple billions of dollars from this monstrous cache of money each year.”
Dimond insists that “the sheer numbers of these abusive cases—reported by loving family members and worried friends across the United States—screams for attention to be paid.”

We’re Here to Help reveals that:
• Anyone can file a simple petition with a state court asking that a guardianship be established. Petitioners can be family members, angry business associates, neighbors, former lovers, or total strangers.
• Those at risk include young people with inheritances; individuals who’ve won sizeable workman’s comp or medical malpractice settlements; veterans with attractive pension payouts; and victims of mental illness or brain injuries who, even after they recover, find it nearly impossible to break free from the system.
• Divorce attorneys in contested cases have counselled male clients to petition for guardianship of their uncooperative wives—and judges have complied. The cases highlighted in the book were found in Pennsylvania, Ohio, New York, and Florida.
• Women are most affected by guardianship. As elderly widows they become ripe for conscription and their caregivers are most often their daughters, not their sons.
• Guardians give presentations at senior centers and nursing homes urging audience members not to saddle their children with caretaking responsibilities. Guardians may share contact information for those interested with estate and elder law attorneys, who pursue court ordered guardianships.
• Lawyers, guardians, and conservators operating in the guardianship field can charge between $250 and $600 an hour for tasks as mundane as opening mail, paying bills, or answering an email. They can hire any number of assistants, including financial advisors, in-home health care, cooks, landscapers, and personal shoppers. The ward’s estate pays for everything.
• Jurists often allow the guardian to ignore a ward’s will, power of attorney, and other legal documents.
• While some states are enacting reform bills to regulate the current system, there have been no proposals to overhaul it. Congress has known about guardianship’s systemic problems for nearly half a century, but no definitive legislation to curb the exploitation has ever been passed.
By highlighting a multitude of real-life stories, We’re Here to Help explains this secretive process step-by-step. Readers will come to understand how family squabbles over what to do with an at-risk relative can spiral into a complicated nightmare of unwanted court intervention.
Dimond includes chapters about alternative programs a judge could establish, and protective legal steps readers can take to help safeguard their families.

Five Questions for Diane Dimond
Qz; What is guardianship and why write a book about it? Guardianship, or conservatorship, is a system that was set up in the late 1800s and it was designed so that any citizen who couldn’t care for themselves got help from the state.
Traditionally, it protected elderly people with dementia or those with profound physical or intellectual disabilities and had no family to care for them. They became a “wards of the court.” But I discovered the system has morphed over the years into something almost sinister. Judges routinely declare all sorts of people as “incapacitated” and assign strangers—lawyers and guardians—to take control of wards’ personal lives and money. These appointees have enormous power because once a person is declared “incapacitated” they lose all their civil rights. Realize, wards can’t hire a lawyer, vote, write a check, or decide where to live or travel. They can be isolated from loved ones and, most shockingly, overmedicated to keep them compliant. Guardianships or conservatorships must be approved by a judge.
Q: Do “petitions for guardianship” state why the person in question needs to be guardianized?
Yes, but frequently a judge accepts whatever claims a lawyer has made in the petition. These might be exaggerations or outright lies; I found that’s not uncommon in these petitions. But these judges don’t have the staff or the time to vet the contents. They take the word of the officer-of-the-court and approve the guardianship. And, once a person is caught up in the system it’s very expensive—and almost impossible for their family to get them out. Court appointees love the fight because it means more time in court and more hourly fees they can charge.
Q: You’ve been writing about abusive guardianships since 2015. There have been other print and TV exposés about it. Why is it that a majority of the public doesn’t know about this system?
Because most guardianship/conservatorship proceedings are conducted in secret. The court and the players—the lawyers, the guardians, and all the rest—say the outside world cannot be privy to the inner workings because of federal HIPAA laws that protect the privacy of a person’s medical information. There have been some great exposes written and aired on individual horror stories—but never a big-picture, in-depth investigative look at the system as a whole.

Q: How did you obtain such detailed information about this secretive system?
In short, very brave family members came forward—at the risk of contempt-of-court charges and hefty fines—to tell me what their loved ones were going through. They shared horror stories about exploitive and abusive guardians: wards being isolated from the family or forcibly overmedicated, outright theft, even allegations of physical and sexual abuse. Most importantly, these relatives provided me with court documents to back up their allegations. And then they steered me to other families that had similar stories to tell. Throughout the book, you emphasize the role judges play within this system. Why should judges bear special scrutiny? To my mind, the ultimate responsibility for these obvious abuses begins and ends with the judge who ordered the guardianship in the first place. If judges need more training to truly understand what can happen after they establish a guardianship, or more money and staff to get the job done in a compassionate way, then their state legislature needs to step up. If a judge is found to be taking campaign contributions from those they appoint to these very profitable positions (and yes, I discovered that has happened), then that cash flow should be made illegal. If there are repeated complaints against a particular judge, then the state judicial board needs to seriously investigate and consider removing that judge. Think of it this way: most people plan where they want to live, travel, and how to spend their retirement. One judge shouldn’t be able to take all that away under the guise of “protection.” Some people really do need help living their life, but that doesn’t mean they should lose their civil rights or be subjected to humiliating and even criminal behavior.

November is Bladder Health Month
With more people getting vaccinated, this holiday season, many of us can finally get back to spending quality time with our loved ones.
But for some, getting through the holidays with overactive bladder (OAB) can be frustrating and embarrassing, leaving many running for the bathroom throughout the festivities. But, OAB doesn’t have to be disruptive, and you aren’t suffering alone.
Common symptoms of OAB include:
 Urgency: a sudden need to go[ii]
 Frequency: the need to go oftenii
• Urge urinary incontinence: leakage episodesii
If you think you may be experiencing symptoms, contact your healthcare provider who may recommend behavioral therapies such as bladder training or pelvic-floor muscle training. If these therapies don’t work, you may need medication. Make sure you talk to your healthcare provider about ways to manage your OAB symptoms and understand which medicines may work best for you.
In the short-term, if you plan on traveling to visit family and friends this year, just be sure to plan ahead.
Tips for Managing OAB During the Holidays:
 If you’re traveling, plan to stop every 2-4 hours to reduce strain on your bladder. Drink plenty of water, but limit your intake a few hours before traveling
 If you can, avoid certain foods and beverages that can irritate the bladder such as alcohol, coffee, spicy and citrusy foods.
 Relax and try to control the urge

Dear Friends + Colleagues,

I am writing on behalf of CorStone to ask for your urgent financial support in response to the current COVID-19 surge in India.

As you are no doubt aware, the situation in India is horrific. Over 350,000 new COVID-19 cases were reported in the last 24 hours alone, though media reports indicate the true number is likely 4-5 times higher, with over 1 million new infections per day. Hospitals have run out of beds, there is an extreme shortage of oxygen, and basic items such as personal protective equipment (PPE), thermometers, and oximeters are in short supply. The many photos posted on social media of mass cremations reflect a devastating humanitarian disaster.

The state of Bihar, one of India’s poorest states with a population of 100 million, has been hit very hard. Bihar is primarily a rural state, with millions of migrant workers. The situation, already bad, is expected to worsen over the next few weeks as workers continue to return home from cities across the country in an effort to escape the outbreak, but in many cases bringing the virus home with them.

CorStone has been working in India since 2009, and in Bihar since 2012. We have nearly 60 employees in Bihar, many of whom, along with their family members are currently suffering from the virus. We have close relations with the state ministries of Health and Education. In consultation with the Bihar health department, CorStone has initiated a targeted relief effort at three high-need hospitals, each of which has been selected due to a large uptick in patients and a shortage of basic supplies.

In partnership with the hospitals we have determined that our relief effort will be two-pronged:

First, we are providing 600 high-quality oximeters for distribution directly to Frontline Health Workers, known locally as ASHAs. ASHAs, all of whom are women, are a critical component of the community health system, providing basic healthcare to millions of villagers across the state. Each ASHA cares for 1,000 villagers. Each of the 600 ASHAs we are supporting will be provided 1 oximeter, thus enabling much-needed oxygen readings for up to 600,000 villagers in all.

Second, we are providing take-home kits (1,000 per hospital) for distribution to patients. In all this includes 15,000 masks, 3,000 bottles of hand sanitizer, 3,000 thermometers, and 3,000 electrolyte sachets for dehydration.

We expect 100% of supplies to reach the hospitals no later than Monday, May 3rd.

We seek to urgently raise US$20,000 in support of this effort. Please know that 100% of your donation will be allocated to the purchase and immediate distribution of these supplies. All CorStone personnel involved are volunteering their time. Please also be assured that we know well the medical officers in charge of each of the hospitals to which we are contributing. We are fully confident that all supplies will reach intended recipients.

I would greatly appreciate it if you would consider giving what you can—and forwarding this letter to others in your network who might be interested to support this cause.

Prior to that, Friend was the assistant news director at WABC-TV in New York City. He rose from producer to executive producer before being promoted to assistant news director during his seven years with the station.
Friend’s career in television news began in 1978 as a news writer at WPIX-TV in New York City. He was promoted to producer and won an Emmy® award for “Best Local Newscast” before being named senior producer.
In 1983, Friend was the first to produce live special coverage of the Macy’s Fourth of July Fireworks show, a tradition that continues today.
In this role, Hyman is responsible for all marketing, brand development, creative direction, production, media strategy and execution. This dedicated space is the first of its kind in New York television, and allows the PIX11 News team to be competitive online through a 360-degree approach to storytelling.
PIX’s recent citywide bus advertising campaign ‘Your Fight is Our Fight’ is a reflection of many of PIX11 News’ most high-impact stories and is an extension of its New York’s Very Own brand. Hyman’s art direction is unconventional – a dramatic shift from traditional marketing – and highlights issues that have resonated passionately with PIX’s core audience.
Prior to joining PIX11, Hyman served as Vice President, Creative Director for NBC Nightly News with Brian Williams from 2009-2012. Hyman was executive producer and liaison for all local programming with oversight for all syndicated programming from major studios. He also served as executive producer for the Emmy® award-winning series Jane’s New York with host Jane Hanson. In addition, he was charged with developing key station relationships and marketing campaigns for all WNBC cultural partners including Lincoln Center, MOMA, the Wildlife Conservation Society and the Tribeca Film Festival. While at WNBC, Hyman was also directly responsible for forging the relationship with LXTV, ultimately purchased by NBC, and was a collaborating partner in the development of their two long running signature shows, Open House New York and First Look New York.
Over the course of nearly thirty years in broadcasting, Hyman has won many prestigious awards including fifteen Promax International Gold Medallion awards, sixteen New York Emmy awards, seven New York State Broadcaster awards, the GLAAD Media award and NATPE’s National Iris award for best public service campaign in America. Sue then got hired in New York City to anchor Live at 5 with Jack Cafferty; doing interviews with celebrities and paving the way for entertainment shows of the present. Her partnership with Cafferty lasted almost twelve years.
She was also paired with Chuck Scarborough to anchor the 11pm newscast. Chuck and Sue (as they were known in New York) were together for 32 years, the longest running anchor team in New York television history! Sue worked at WNBC-TV for 32 years until June of 2012.

Simmons’s final broadcast was on June 15, 2012. During that program, show biz entertainers, sports figures and longtime co-workers appeared with fun farewells. She’s fondly remembered for her on-air impression of a groundhog. It became a tradition!

After her run at WNBC, Simmons made cameo appearances on various TV shows – Law & Order, 30 Rock, and Elementary. She even appeared in a few movies: The First Wives Club, Set It Off, and Exiled: A Law & Order movie.

My name is Qi Men. I grow up in Yantai, Shandong Province, mainland China. I went to Beijing for college, graduated 1st of the academic year and became an English teacher at China’s biggest language and test preparation school— New Oriental (NYSE EDU). After teaching for four years and accumulated good reputation of my passionate lecturing style, and also inspired by students I teach, I decided to learn more and do more. So I pursued further education in Brooklyn Law school in New York. After graduation, I represented the law school to recruit students in China, covering law schools, government departments and bar associations. I’ve helped build relationships between Brooklyn law school and almost 50 Chinese law schools. And I’m in the middle of building an international law school with a top-ranked Chinese law school.

Now I decided to also practice law with an excellent law firm — Diane Bradshaw Law Group, PC., hoping to help not only students, but companies, and many others to find the best solutions to their obstacles. We are helping clients from both domestic and international channels to grow. If you need legal consultation, feel free to reach out to us at ‭+1 (917) 783-8125‬, or email us at Qi.men7@gmail.com. Collaborating with leaders like Georgetown’s Global Social Enterprise Initiative, (http://socialenterprise.georgetown.edu/ ) MIT AgeLab & MedStar Health, new initiative to explore technology, services & solutions for successfully aging well

July 13, 2015 07:30 AM Eastern Daylight Time
WASHINGTON–(BUSINESS WIRE)–Today during the White House Conference on Aging, Philips announced the creation of the AgingWell Hub (AWH), a unique new research center for open innovation that will examine and share solutions for aging well. The initiative will identify new technologies, products and services, as well as provide thought leadership in collaboration with older adults, caregivers, healthcare systems, payers, policy makers, corporate innovators, entrepreneurs and academia. The AWH will also seek solutions to improve technology adoption among older adults and make aging well a reality for more people, by enabling them to better connect with their communities and healthcare providers.

“This rapidly growing segment of the population has critical needs that are not being met”
Tweet this
As part of the first phase of this initiative, Philips will collaborate with industry and issue experts, including leaders with a common interest in aging well such as American Architectural Foundation (AAF), eHealth Initiative, the Global Social Enterprise Initiative (GSEI) at Georgetown University’s McDonough School of Business, Georgetown University Urban and Regional Planning Program, Humana, MedStar Health, Merck, Respect a Caregiver’s Time (ReAct), Smart Living 360, StreetScape USA, Westchester County’s Department of Senior Programs and Services (New York) and The Gary and Mary West Health Institute. AWH thought leaders and experts will create a blueprint for a research hub, expected to be based in Cambridge, Massachusetts. In addition, Philips is in discussion with the MIT AgeLab to advise on the lab design and research program.

“This rapidly growing segment of the population has critical needs that are not being met,” said Kimberly O’Loughlin, Senior Vice President and General Manager of Philips Home Monitoring. “By bringing awareness, collaborating with industry leaders and innovators, and creating an ongoing dialogue, we can help drive solutions that allow older adults to remain independent, healthy and socially engaged. Transforming the experience, improving outcomes and lowering costs requires that we work together to drive simplicity and interoperability. The AWH gives us a platform to test and learn and innovate together.”

The Philips AgingWell Hub will have three key areas of focus:

1.

Drive Open Innovation by creating learning labs to accelerate transformation and improvements in the aging journey. This would allow for open co-creation by engaging older adults, caregivers, healthcare systems, payers, policy makers, corporate innovators, entrepreneurs and academia. The goal is to understand the true cost and performance of care and how it can be improved with innovation and collaboration.

2.
Share Thought Leadership by leveraging data, analytics and dialog to create and share insights that foster transformation. These insights will allow healthcare systems to be more proactive and preventative, enabling aging adults to live at home for as long as possible. As part of this commitment, AWH will share insights, as well as collaborate with other industry leaders on how to improve the efficacy of care delivery, solutions and services for living well.

3.
Promote Positive Image of Aging by working with others to promote a positive image of senior care, helping to tackle the “stigma” that can limit caregiving support and seniors’ access to it. AWH would develop communications materials and drive a positive and enabling image of aging and older adults.

The AWH expands on the Philips Center for Health and Well-being Aging Well Think Tank, as well as its work and researchwith GSEI, which has examined the attitudes and behaviors among the aging population and their caregivers regarding the adoption of technology. Through this work, Philips and its collaborators have found that a new approach is needed – a consumer-centric approach that involves government, industry, healthcare systems, academic institutions and nonprofit organizations as partners in the design of new programs and smart technologies that will empower older adults to thrive.

(note the one “gifted hypnotherapist ..”)

As a teenager I only had one pair of jeans and became terribly embarrassed and ashamed when a cute boy at school smiled at me, because I was certain that he was laughing at my old jeans.

It took me many years to summon the strength to share my story: I grew up in poverty in the Ukraine (part of the Soviet Union at the time) and later in Israel, after my parents relocated there due to persecution based on a religion we didn’t follow or even know much about.

My parents were working many hours to make ends meet and we barely had money for food, everything else was considered a luxury we couldn’t afford.

After college graduation and completing my service in the Israeli Navy, I married my high-school sweetheart of 5 years. He soon turned out to be an abusive husband. I suffered years of daily mental abuse and humiliation, feeling too ashamed to tell anyone and having such low self-esteem that I thought that I probably deserved it. Living in New Jersey, we would go, on a regular basis, to see our friends in Brooklyn – a few couples we’d met when we moved to the United States. Consistently – after every visit – I would get hell on earth for a long time with him analyzing and criticizing what seemed to be my every word and action. We put up a great façade: our friends had no idea of the hell I was going through, believing us to be a loving and compatible couple. After a while I participated less and less in the interactions during our visits, in fear of his wrath. The abuse escalated and increased even more after our daughter was born.

One day, after a long sequence of mental abuse and threats of violence, I seized an opportunity when he was in the shower, grabbed in my arms the dearest thing in the world for me: my toddler daughter, and ran away. That same day, I had to seek police protection, as he came after me and threatened to kill me.

The story ends with me being swept off my feet by a prince charming on a white horse, as we rode happily-ever-after into the sunset… well; it was actually a two-seater white convertible (car). I am now in a loving and supportive relationship with my soul-mate and every year of the last twenty has been like a continuous honeymoon.

Since a young age, I have memories of being able to advise people as to the solution to their problems. It seemed easy and natural to sense myself in their situation and feel what the appropriate move for them was. As far back as I can remember when I was still in Ukraine, I had a desire to help people, to better their life. At every opportunity I would volunteer it, much to the disdain of my parents. People often asked for more.

I refined and developed my expertise many years later, when I was the director and cofounder of a marriage-minded introduction service, Right Match. In the position of a matchmaker, I spend countless hours guiding and coaching my clients as to the best way to present themselves and how to develop a happy, long-lasting romantic relationship that would ultimately lead to marriage. During that time I received many letters from clients thanking me for matches that were way beyond their expectations. It was easy for me: after seeing the person I simply felt his/her personality. This – combined with graphology analysis, personality testing and interviews – made the matching effective and successful. It gave me a tremendous satisfaction to hear that as a result of my help, many people’s lives had been changed and improved. With time I expanded to international matchmaking and established contacts in several western countries.

For many years I’ve been studying and researching the power of the mind and its ability to transform us. As a Master Clinical Hypnotherapist I was fortunate to reach thousands of people around the world and to help them better their life and achieve their highest goals. I’ve developed an in-depth hypnotherapy course that I’ve been teaching for over 12 years and have certified many hypnotherapists. My subliminal, audible and hypnosis self-help series of recordings have been online since the 90s, with over 40 different subjects that use “whole brain” methods to guide the listener to let go of limitations and transform their life.

As a Reiki Master Healer I’ve been teaching and training students to heal themselves and others. I was fortunate to live on three different continents and I feel that it gave me multiple perspectives and an uncanny ability to look in from outside and feel how best to help the person I am working with.

artist: Jonathon Earl Bowser

I receive thank-you letters from around the world for helping people tap their unlimited potential, improve their lives, find their soulmates and lead happy and productive lives; I feel that I am learning more and more every single day and the love in my heart is expanding and multiplying!

In the 1990s I felt a strong desire to study the 2500-year-old Japanese healing method of Reiki (literal translation: Universal Life Force Energy). I had the privilege of completing all of the levels with Diane Stein (and became a Reiki Master in 1995. I don’t think words can begin to express the experience…!!! It seemed as if many doors simultaneously opened around me and my awareness spread in many directions… and I felt as one with all. My consciousness soared up and about and the sensation of Universal Union was stronger than it had ever been before. And the amazing phenomenon is – that it has remained this way ever since…

At that time I created and trademarked Reikinosis, which is a revolutionary healing modality that facilitates deep healing on all levels. Since then many clients were able to benefit from it.

Is it time to come down to earth? When you listen to my recordings you’ll feel the sincerity and love with which I’ve created them. And, of course, I personally make sure that the Reiki healing energy is within each and every recording. After you try some of my general recordings, I’m sure you will find them beyond your expectation. When you are ready to progress further on your evolutionary path, you have a choice of seminars or one-on-one coaching with me.

As we work together to achieve your deepest desires, you will find that you become more in touch with yourself. As you become more in touch with yourself, the sessions will touch your core issues deep inside your subconscious more intimately, and the results will become more powerful and effective.

And as the result of these deeply personalized sessions, you will find that as you grow – you progress towards your own personal happiness!

I’m a Libra-Tiger (Chinese horoscope) and spend my free time (when I have the time…) scuba diving, rock climbing, sky diving, mountain bike riding, dancing, enjoying my wonderful daughter and amazing son and my kind and loving husband and reading, reading, reading.

I have been been published in several magazines such as Third Eye and Inner Realm. Some online articles of mine:
