It’s the New Year and for adults who are significantly overweight or have obesity and looking to maintain healthy weight loss –it’s a good time to be extra careful that they’re sticking to their healthy lifestyle choices and, in many cases, anti-obesity drug schedules.

It’s no secret that it can be difficult for many people living with obesity who are struggling to comply with their medication regimens and lifestyle changes, including diet and exercise.

With obesity projected to impact one billion people worldwide by 2030, there is an absolute necessity for these individuals to “stay on course.”

Experts are stressing that the obesity crisis can best be addressed with a combination of the new weight loss drugs or GLP-1 agonists and older, more established oral prescription drugs.

The GLP-1 drugs have many benefits, but there are some areas of concern, too. Many individuals need to stay on them long-term to maintain results and they’re sometimes very costly and often not covered by insurance. A recent analysis reported that the GLP-1 agonists are simply not cost-effective, and found that older, more established oral prescription drugs are more cost-effective.

According to weigh-loss experts, the best advice for those managing obesity is three-fold:
· Make sure you’re taking the drug that works best with your goals.
· Be sure you’re keeping your “eye on the ball” with treatment, diet, and exercise.
· Finally enjoy yourself as much as possible throughout all yearly celebrations.

JOINING US TODAY TO SHARE MORE IS DR. MICHELLE CARDEL, HEAD OF WEIGHTWATCHER’S CLINICAL RESEARCH AND NUTRITION.

What she does at WW

Michelle is an obesity and nutrition scientist and registered dietitian with a focus on the development and implementation of evidence-based healthy lifestyle strategies for adults and children, particularly those from medically-underserved backgrounds. At WeightWatchers®, Michelle oversees the company’s academic research partnerships and clinical trials, nutrition portfolio, and science communication. In collaboration with fellow scientists and teams across the organization, she plans and executes research studies, then implements and disseminates the findings for WeightWatchers members, the scientific community, and the greater community at large. She also leads the company’s nutrition point of view using the latest in nutritional science, and works across the organization to translate the evidence in member content, programs, and beyond.

Her background

Before joining the WW Science team in 2021, Michelle was an assistant professor at the University of Florida College of Medicine. She was also the founder and director of the University of Florida Obesity Research Alliance, and an associate director for the Center for Integrative Cardiovascular and Metabolic Diseases. She holds a PhD in nutrition sciences and a master’s degree in clinical nutrition from University of Alabama at Birmingham, and a bachelor’s degree in biological sciences from Florida State University. She also holds specialized training in motivational interviewing, acceptance and commitment therapy, implementation science, and is a dedicated advocate for diversity, equity, and inclusion.

Throughout her career, Michelle has authored over 70 scientific publications and received numerous honors including the Excellence in Emerging Outcomes Research award from the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, the Superior Accomplishment Award for Diversity & Inclusion in the Workplace from the University of Florida Health Sciences Center, and the University of Alabama at Birmingham’s Outstanding Woman Award and Outstanding Young Alumni Award. She was also awarded Fellow Status for The Obesity Society, in recognition of her outstanding contributions to the field of obesity. Michelle is a skilled proponent of science communication and has conducted dozens of media interviews, including a recurring segment on nutrition for Channel 9 News in Denver. She’s also highly active on social media in efforts to translate scientific findings to the public.

What brought her to WW

Michelle has focused her career on the etiology, prevention, and treatment of obesity among diverse populations. She is committed to meeting people where they are and using science-backed practices to help them become their healthiest selves. When given the opportunity to join the WW team, she jumped at the chance to channel this passion into real-world application for 4+ million WW members across the globe.

Most exciting part of the job

According to Michelle, it is all about impact. She loves utilizing her science background and collaborating with others to improve the health and wellness of WW members.

Get to know Michelle:

In her free time: Michelle, her husband, and their two young children spend as much time as they can outside. Whether camping, hiking, swimming, skiing, or jumping off a rope swing, they find joy together as a family in the great outdoors.
You might be surprised to learn: Michelle is terrified of heights. In an attempt to overcome that fear, she has bungee-jumped at the highest jump in the world (South Africa) and gone skydiving. That said, she still gets nauseous when looking over a third-story balcony.
The wellness advice she gives her friends: Find what works for you and aligns with your value system. “Nourishing and moving our bodies, doing things that bring joy, and prioritizing sleep and mental health are all ways that we can become the healthiest version of ourselves,” she adds.

Registered Dietitian Leslie Bonci Offers Advice and Shares New Solutions for Better Digestive Health
New LiveActive Movement Helps Americans Achieve Digestive Wellness

60 to 70 million Americans suffer from some sort of digestive health issue. And four out of five women, about 80%, experience occasional irregularity.

The LiveActive Movement was just launched to help guide the millions of Americans who suffer from digestive health issues toward better gut health and overall health and wellness. A new lifestyle–based approach to feeling good inside and out, the LiveActive Movement is designed to help people keep up with their busy lifestyles and achieve digestive wellness by maintaining a healthy balance of good bacteria in the digestive system.

By joining the Movement, Americans can follow a tailored LiveActive Everyday Plan that includes tips on how they can do good things for their gut daily by incorporating regular exercise into their routine, choosing foods that promote gut health and making sure they get enough fluids each day.

Leslie Bonci, Director of Sports Medicine Nutrition at the University of Pittsburgh, nutritionist for the Pittsburgh Steelers, Penguins and Pirates and a registered dietitian, helped develop the LiveActive Everyday Plan and can explain the LiveActive Movement, as well as provide steps for tailored eating and fitness and lifestyle tips for bettering your digestive health and overall well-being. These steps include:

• Keep Things Moving. Maintaining a balanced routine of exercising, stretching and relaxing work with your body to help move things along.
• Incorporate gut-friendly foods — like those rich in probiotics and prebiotics — into your everyday diet. These items are getting easier and easier to find in common grocery stores across the nation — particularly in the dairy aisle. Three Tips for Dealing with and Managing Chronic Pain
While everyone feels pain from time to time, such as pulling a muscle or having a backache, chronic pain is tremendously different from everyday pain. www.Medtronic.com

Chronic pain is defined as pain that lasts longer than three months and can continue when the injury or illness has been treated. Chronic pain is a disabling condition that affects 100 million American adults every year, a number that keeps growing, which can negatively affect one’s wellbeing. Working, sleeping, or even seemingly simple tasks like walking up the stairs are activities that become harder if you’re living with chronic pain. In fact, chronic pain is one of the most common reasons adults seek medical care and costs the nation approximately $560-635 billion annually in direct medical treatment costs and lost productivity.

Michael Fishman, MD, MBA, double board-certified anesthesiologist and Interventional Pain Medicine specialist and his patient Genevieve Watycha, who suffered for more than 30 years with chronic pain, will be available to discuss the journey of chronic back pain management, including how Genevieve finally managed her chronic back pain, which had previously prevented her from sleeping properly, walking long distances and going about her day-to-day activities.

Three tips that may be helpful in managing chronic pain:
• Mind-Body Therapies: Mind-body therapies are treatments that are meant to help the mind’s ability to affect the functions and symptoms of the body. Mind-body therapies use various approaches including relaxation techniques, exercise, meditation, guided imagery, and hypnosis. Relaxation techniques can help alleviate discomfort related to chronic pain.
• Manage your diet: Believe it or not, diet has an impact on a person’s ability to fight pain away. Omega-3 fatty acids, found in foods such as salmon or tuna, have been known to reduce inflammation. Yellow, orange, and red fruits/vegetables are from a group of phytochemicals known as carotenoids – which have also been known to help reduce inflammation.
• Talk to your doctor about treatment options: In the case that medication or lifestyle changes won’t fix or lessen your pain, it’s crucial to speak to your doctor about the latest treatment options. Your doctor may recommend a number of treatments, including pharmacological, relaxation and/or physical therapy, or DTM Spinal Cord Stimulation, to help alleviate the pain.
Interview is courtesy: Medtronic
It all began in 1943, as a dream of Hick & Nellie Shoults. A dream to have a business the whole family could share in-both the responsibilities and the joys!
From their little farm in Bear Bottom, nestled in the Piney Woods of East Texas, they started with just a few Turkeys, a small little Smokehouse… and a whole world of dreams yet to be realized!
The year was 1943, and the country was at war. Times were tough during those years, but the dreams and aspirations of Hick & Nellie were very much alive! Their son Bobby, then a toddler, was beginning to help Hick feed and tend to the Turkeys as well as do other chores around the Smokehouse.
As the years passed, Bear Creek Smokehouse grew from its humble start… And so did its reputation! The smoked Turkeys that had fulfilled the seasonal orders from the local grocers and Agriculture Extension office were enjoyed so much that the word spread! Year after year the demand grew for a greater selection of delicious smoked meats! Finally, Hick, Nellie and Bobby made the decision to cease raising the livestock and purchase what they needed so they could concentrate their efforts on running the growing Smokehouse!
In 1959, Bobby married his sweetheart Brenda and brought her home to Bear Creek!
Brenda eagerly cherished her new role in the growing family business, cheerfully answering the seasonal calls and taking orders for the ever-expanding list of smoked meat selections that Bear Creek now offered through a catalog!
Then in 1960, Bobby & Brenda welcomed Robbie to the family! This also marked what would become the next phase of remarkable growth for Bear Creek! As the years passed and the Smokehouse expanded into larger facilities, Robbie grew up receiving a first-hand knowledge of the business and he began to form his ideas of what direction to take it!
In 1990 Hunter was welcomed into the Bear Creek Family! As he grew up, he gained a first-hand education in Smokehouse 101!
Even though Bear Creek had a significant wholesale business in place, Robbie yearned to take it to the next level. He & his bride Tracy continued to forge the growing business, complimenting it with several Holiday Gift Shows around the country. These shows met with overwhelming popularity and the business continued to grow over the next few years!
Hunter grew up, opening the door to the modern growth for Bear Creek! He turned his attention to leading the company, along with his new bride Stacia, into the next era of Bear Creek’s expansion… Fundraising!
Now, with Hunter & Stacia’s kids, Cooper & Barrett…The Fifth generation and future look bright for Bear Creek!
From our humble beginnings to todays 43,000 Sq Ft facility with our wide array of products… It has Always Been About Family & Quality… Always Will Be!

learn more about why Poorly managed high cholesterol is a significant public health threat

Nearly 62 million adult Americans have high cholesterol[i], and that number is growing. Of these, up to 34 million people are on standard treatment, which typically includes statins, on top of diet and exercise. However, 1 in 4 still aren’t able to control their cholesterol and continue to have elevated LDL-C levels[ii], putting them at increased risk for cardiovascular disease – the #1 cause of death in the U.S.[iii] In fact, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) expects deaths from cardiovascular disease to increase by approximately 25% by 2030.[iv]

Additionally, up to 2 million people have genetically high cholesterol, also known as familial hypercholesterolemia (FH), which is harder to manage and puts them at up to 20-times higher risk for developing early heart disease in their 30s, 40s and 50s.[v],[vi]

People who require additional LDL-C lowering on top of statin therapy represent a high-risk population, who may need to consider other options when their cholesterol remains high despite standard treatment. Fortunately, there are non-statin treatment options that may help people reach their LDL-C goals.

As we approach February, American Heart Month, it’s important for people to think about their long-term health and how they can take care of their heart. Working with a healthcare provider to keep your cholesterol in check and finding a treatment option that helps you reach and maintain your goals are important ways people can take care of their health.

Katherine Wilemon from the FH Foundation, who had a heart attack at age 39 due to undiagnosed and unmanaged FH, and Dr. Pamela Taub, an Associate Professor of Medicine in the Division of Cardiovascular Medicine at the University of California San Diego, will be available to discuss the risks associated with poorly managed cholesterol, risk factors for FH and treatment approaches that can make a difference for people who struggle to reach their cholesterol goals.

The ketogenic diet (or keto diet, for short) is a low carb, high fat diet that offers many health benefits.

In fact, many studies show that this type of diet can help you lose weight and improve your health (1Trusted Source).

Ketogenic diets may even have benefits against diabetes, cancer, epilepsy, and Alzheimer’s disease (2Trusted Source, 3Trusted Source, 4Trusted Source, 5Trusted Source).

Here is a detailed beginner’s guide to the keto diet.

Keto basics

The ketogenic diet is a very low carb, high fat diet that shares many similarities with the Atkins and low carb diets.

It involves drastically reducing carbohydrate intake and replacing it with fat. This reduction in carbs puts your body into a metabolic state called ketosis.

When this happens, your body becomes incredibly efficient at burning fat for energy. It also turns fat into ketones in the liver, which can supply energy for the brain (6Trusted Source).

Ketogenic diets can cause significant reductions in blood sugar and insulin levels. This, along with the increased ketones, has some health benefits (6Trusted Source, 7Trusted Source, 8Trusted Source).

There are several versions of the ketogenic diet, including:

Standard ketogenic diet (SKD): This is a very low carb, moderate protein and high fat diet. It typically contains 70% fat, 20% protein, and only 10% carbs (9Trusted Source).

Cyclical ketogenic diet (CKD): This diet involves periods of higher carb refeeds, such as 5 ketogenic days followed by 2 high carb days.

Targeted ketogenic diet (TKD): This diet allows you to add carbs around workouts.

High protein ketogenic diet: This is similar to a standard ketogenic diet, but includes more protein. The ratio is often 60% fat, 35% protein, and 5% carbs.

However, only the standard and high protein ketogenic diets have been studied extensively. Cyclical or targeted ketogenic diets are more advanced methods and primarily used by bodybuilders or athletes.

The information in this article mostly applies to the standard ketogenic diet (SKD), although many of the same principles also apply to the other versions.

What is ketosis?

Ketosis is a metabolic state in which your body uses fat for fuel instead of carbs.

It occurs when you significantly reduce your consumption of carbohydrates, limiting your body’s supply of glucose (sugar), which is the main source of energy for the cells.

Following a ketogenic diet is the most effective way to enter ketosis. Generally, this involves limiting carb consumption to around 20 to 50 grams per day and filling up on fats, such as meat, fish, eggs, nuts, and healthy oils (6Trusted Source).

It’s also important to moderate your protein consumption. This is because protein can be converted into glucose if consumed in high amounts, which may slow your transition into ketosis (10Trusted Source).

Practicing intermittent fasting could also help you enter ketosis faster. There are many different forms of intermittent fasting, but the most common method involves limiting food intake to around 8 hours per day and fasting for the remaining 16 hours (11Trusted Source).

Blood, urine, and breath tests are available, which can help determine whether you’ve entered ketosis by measuring the amount of ketones produced by your body.

Certain symptoms may also indicate that you’ve entered ketosis, including increased thirst, dry mouth, frequent urination, and decreased hunger or appetite (12Trusted Source).

Ketogenic diets can help you lose weight

A ketogenic diet is an effective way to lose weight and lower risk factors for disease (1Trusted Source, 2Trusted Source, 3Trusted Source, 4Trusted Source, 5Trusted Source).

In fact, research shows that the ketogenic diet may be as effective for weight loss as a low fat diet (13Trusted Source, 14Trusted Source, 15Trusted Source).

What’s more, the diet is so filling that you can lose weight without counting calories or tracking your food intake (16Trusted Source).

One review of 13 studies found that following a very low carb, ketogenic diet was slightly more effective for long-term weight loss than a low fat diet. People who followed the keto diet lost an average of 2 pounds (0.9 kg) more than the group that followed a low fat diet (13Trusted Source).

What’s more, it also led to reductions in diastolic blood pressure and triglyceride levels (13Trusted Source).

Another study in 34 older adults found that those who followed a ketogenic diet for 8 weeks lost nearly five times as much total body fat as those who followed a low fat diet (17Trusted Source).

The increased ketones, lower blood sugar levels, and improved insulin sensitivity may also play a key role (18Trusted Source, 19Trusted Source).

Diabetes is characterized by changes in metabolism, high blood sugar, and impaired insulin function (20Trusted Source).

The ketogenic diet can help you lose excess fat, which is closely linked to type 2 diabetes, prediabetes, and metabolic syndrome (21Trusted Source, 22Trusted Source, 23Trusted Source, 24Trusted Source).

One older study found that the ketogenic diet improved insulin sensitivity by a whopping 75% (25Trusted Source).

A small study in women with type 2 diabetes also found that following a ketogenic diet for 90 days significantly reduced levels of hemoglobin A1C, which is a measure of long-term blood sugar management (26Trusted Source).

Another study in 349 people with type 2 diabetes found that those who followed a ketogenic diet lost an average of 26.2 pounds (11.9 kg) over a 2-year period. This is an important benefit when considering the link between weight and type 2 diabetes (Trusted Source24Trusted Source, 27Trusted Source).

What’s more, they also experienced improved blood sugar management, and the use of certain blood sugar medications decreased among participants throughout the course of the study (Trusted Source27Trusted Source).

Other health benefits of keto

The ketogenic diet actually originated as a tool for treating neurological diseases such as epilepsy.

Studies have now shown that the diet can have benefits for a wide variety of different health conditions:

Heart disease. The ketogenic diet can help improve risk factors like body fat, HDL (good) cholesterol levels, blood pressure, and blood sugar (28Trusted Source, 29Trusted Source).

Cancer. The diet is currently being explored as an additional treatment for cancer, because it may help slow tumor growth. (4Trusted Source, 30Trusted Source, 31Trusted Source).

Alzheimer’s disease. The keto diet may help reduce symptoms of Alzheimer’s disease and slow its progression (5Trusted Source, 32Trusted Source, 33Trusted Source).

Epilepsy. Research has shown that the ketogenic diet can cause significant reductions in seizures in epileptic children (3Trusted Source).

Parkinson’s disease. Although more research is needed, one study found that the diet helped improve symptoms of Parkinson’s disease (34Trusted Source).

Polycystic ovary syndrome. The ketogenic diet can help reduce insulin levels, which may play a key role in polycystic ovary syndrome (35Trusted Source, 36Trusted Source).

Brain injuries. Some research suggests that the diet could improve outcomes of traumatic brain injuries (37Trusted Source).

However, keep in mind that research into many of these areas is far from conclusive.

Keto tips and tricks

Although getting started on the ketogenic diet can be challenging, there are several tips and tricks that you can use to make it easier.

Start by familiarizing yourself with food labels and checking the grams of fat, carbs, and fiber to determine how your favorite foods can fit into your diet.

Planning out your meals in advance may also be beneficial and can help you save extra time throughout the week.

Many websites, food blogs, apps, and cookbooks also offer keto-friendly recipes and meal ideas that you can use to build your own custom menu.

Alternatively, some meal delivery services even offer keto-friendly options for a quick and convenient way to enjoy keto meals at home.

Look into healthy frozen keto meals when you’re short on time

When going to social gatherings or visiting family and friends, you may also want to consider bringing your own food, which can make it much easier to curb cravings and stick to your meal plan.

Tips for eating out on a ketogenic diet

Many restaurant meals can be made keto-friendly.

Most restaurants offer some kind of meat or fish-based dish. Order this and replace any high carb food with extra vegetables.

Egg-based meals are also a great option, such as an omelet or eggs and bacon.

Another favorite is bun-less burgers. You could also swap the fries for vegetables instead. Add extra avocado, cheese, bacon, or eggs.

At Mexican restaurants, you can enjoy any type of meat with extra cheese, guacamole, salsa, and sour cream.

For dessert, ask for a mixed cheese board or berries with cream.

Side effects and how to minimize them

Although the ketogenic diet is usually safe for most healthy people, there may be some initial side effects while your body adapts.

There’s some anecdotal evidence of these effects often referred to as the keto flu (38Trusted Source). Based on reports from some on the eating plan, it’s usually over within a few days.

Reported keto flu symptoms include diarrhea, constipation, and vomiting (39Trusted Source). Other less common symptoms include:

poor energy and mental function

increased hunger

sleep issues

nausea

digestive discomfort

decreased exercise performance

To minimize this, you can try a regular low carb diet for the first few weeks. This may teach your body to burn more fat before you completely eliminate carbs.

A ketogenic diet can also change the water and mineral balance of your body, so adding extra salt to your meals or taking mineral supplements may help. Talk to your doctor about your nutritional needs.

At least in the beginning, it’s important to eat until you’re full and avoid restricting calories too much. Usually, a ketogenic diet causes weight loss without intentional calorie restriction.

Risks of the keto diet

Staying on the keto diet in the long term may have some negative effectsTrusted Source, including risks of the following:

low protein in the blood

extra fat in the liver

kidney stones

micronutrient deficiencies

A type of medication called sodium-glucose cotransporter 2 (SGLT2) inhibitors for type 2 diabetes can increase the risk for diabetic ketoacidosis, a dangerous condition that increases blood acidity. Anyone taking this medication should avoid the keto diet (40Trusted Source, 41Trusted Source).

More research is being done to determine the safety of the keto diet in the long term. Keep your doctor informed of your eating plan to guide your choices.

Frequently asked questions

Here are answers to some of the most common questions about the ketogenic diet.

1. Can I ever eat carbs again?

Yes. However, it’s important to significantly reduce your carb intake initially. After the first 2 to 3 months, you can eat carbs on special occasions — just return to the diet immediately after.

2. Will I lose muscle?

There’s a risk of losing some muscle on any diet. However, protein intake and high ketone levels may help minimize muscle loss, especially if you lift weights (50Trusted Source, 51Trusted Source).

3. Can I build muscle on a ketogenic diet?

Yes, but it may not work as well as on a moderate carb diet (52Trusted Source, 53Trusted Source). For more details about low carb or keto diets and exercise performance, read this article.

4. How much protein can I eat?

Protein should be moderate, as a very high intake can spike insulin levels and lower ketones. Around 35% of total calorie intake is probably the upper limit.

5. What if I am constantly tired, weak, or fatigued?

You may not be in full ketosis or be utilizing fats and ketones efficiently. To counter this, lower your carb intake and revisit the points above. A supplement like MCT oil or ketones may also help (42Trusted Source, 43Trusted Source).

6. My urine smells fruity. Why is this?

Don’t be alarmed. This is simply due to the excretion of by-products created during ketosis (54Trusted Source).

7. My breath smells. What can I do?

This is a common side effect. Try drinking naturally flavored water or chewing sugar-free gum.

8. I heard ketosis was extremely dangerous. Is this true?

People often confuse ketosis with ketoacidosis. Ketoacidosis is dangerous, but the ketosis on a ketogenic diet is usually fine for healthy people. Speak to your doctor before starting any new diet.

9. I have digestion issues and diarrhea. What can I do?

This common side effect usually passes after 3 to 4 weeks. If it persists, try eating more high fiber veggies (55Trusted Source, 56).

The bottom line

A ketogenic diet can be great for people who:

are overweight

have diabetes

are looking to improve their metabolic health

It may be less suitable for elite athletes or those wishing to add large amounts of muscle or weight.

It may also not be sustainable for some people’s lifestyles and preferences. Speak with your doctor about your eating plan and goals to decide if a keto eating plan right for you.

Why One Nonprofit Offers Free Weight Loss Consultations

Tired of struggling to lose weight? Dr. Stern can help!

SEATTLE, Wash. – (December 18, 2020) – According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the prevalence of obesity is over 42%. The weight loss and diet industry in the country is estimated to be around $72 billion. There are millions of people who struggle with losing weight, pouring money and time into programs that leave them no lighter and searching for the next one to try. One retired doctor is on a mission to change that, offering free weight loss consultations at his newly launched nonprofit called Seattle Weight Loss Center, in an effort to help as many people as he can to achieve weight loss success.

“I know what it’s like to struggle and yo-yo diet for years,” explains Dr. Michael Stern, founder of the Seattle Weight Loss Center. “I’ve been there, and I’ve learned a lot along the way that I want to share with others, so they can have the same success with their weight loss.”

Dr. Stern, a retired urologist who has extensively studied weight loss from a variety of angles, has become a weight loss specialist. A former marathon runner, he was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis in 1995, and today is a quadriplegic. Seeing how so many people struggle with weight issues, which bring about or exacerbate underlying health conditions, he founded the Seattle Weight Loss Center. Through the nonprofit organization, he is on a mission to help as many people as he can to take control of their weight, successfully shed the extra pounds, and improve their overall health and well-being.

Conducting everything through Zoom, Dr. Stern is able to help people with their weight loss journey from wherever they are in the country. His weight loss program, called Dr. Stern’s Rotation Diet, is shared in his new book by the same name on Amazon. The diet offers a weight loss program that focuses on four main components, which are motivation, disciplined endurance, diet, and exercise. With Dr. Stern’s Rotation Diet, people pick two or three diets that work for them, and rotate them to increase success rates. One of the other key aspects of the plan is to know the “why” so you know what motivates you to lose the weight.

His program goes beyond just what one eats and how many calories they burn. He explores the psychological aspects of weight, including teaching people to incorporate mindfulness, meditation, and more. He helps people gain an understanding of the keys to success, how to stay the course, and hacks to help people achieve long-lasting weight loss. His program shares the secrets of how he lost 70 pounds in seven months, without exercising Vat all.

“With my program, people will overcome the challenges and barriers to weight loss, help reduce comorbidities, and once and for all stop yo-yo dieting,” added Dr. Stern. “Plus, people have nothing to lose but the weight because my advice is free. Helping as many people as I can is something on my bucket list, so it’s a win-win situation.”

Dr. Stern has attended weight loss conferences, as well as worked with a variety of professionals in the field to gain a better understanding about weight issues, including nutritionists, physical therapists, and psychologists. As part of his program, he will also be recommending ongoing treatment to board-certified physicians and surgeons in obesity medicine in each patient’s local area. After spending 60 years yo-yo dieting, he has successfully applied all he has learned about losing weight and maintaining the loss. His new book, “Dr. Stern’s Rotation Diet,” is now available on Amazon. While his weight loss consultations are free, the organization does accept donations to help cover costs.

We can all expect an occasional sleepless night during and after pregnancy. But, baby aside, there are plenty of external factors that might be causing you to stare at the ceiling night after night. Fortunately, there are also plenty of ways to fight back. Keep reading for smart advice that will put you right to sleep.

Do you have a sleep disorder?

Before you start making changes to your lifestyle, it may be a good idea to talk to your doctor about the potential of having a sleep disorder. According to Harvard University, there are many different types of sleep disorders, from insomnia to obstructive sleep apnea, the latter of which can be fatal. Rule out any serious medical concerns before moving forward.

Diet and exercise

Now that that’s out of the way, take a look at your diet. If you’re pregnant, you may have started eating differently than you did before. Hopefully, this means that you’ve added lots of healthy foods to your diet. But even the healthiest dinner can keep you awake all night if it’s too heavy. First, as your abdomen expands, it takes less food to feel full. Plus, your body — and sense of smell — reacts differently to even your favorite foods, meaning that tacos may wind up giving you unbearable heartburn until delivery. Instead of overdoing it at the dinner table, have a light meal and a healthy snack before bed. You can also use this trick on children who tend to toss and turn the first part of the night.

Did you know that certain minerals and vitamins can improve your sleep quality? Calcium, magnesium, potassium, and vitamins D and E can all give you a little extra help sleeping, so make sure you’re taking a quality multivitamin. A multivitamin can also reduce sluggishness and prevent your mood from dipping.

You’ll also want to make sure you’re getting plenty of exercise since this is the best way to wear your body out and bring on uninterrupted slumber.

Environmental factors

Your behaviors are only one thing that can bring on unwelcomed insomnia. If your family hasn’t purchased new mattresses in a few years, it’s time to start evaluating your sleep styles. Many adults find that sleeping on a firmer mattress is most comfortable. Kids, however, might cozy up better on a soft bed with a down topper. A good mattress to try is Purple, which is a middle-of-the-road brand (it’s not luxury, but it’s not low-end either). When picking a mattress, keep your body weight in mind. If you’re on the larger side, the firmer, the better since your body weight will exert more force on the top few layers, making a mattress that the kids would call “brick-like” feel a bit too soft and squishy for you.

If you’ve switched mattress out and still can’t sleep, pay attention to the temperature. Most experts agree that somewhere in the mid-60s is good for sleep. But, if you have hormones swirling through your blood, you may experience night sweats, which can wake you from a deep sleep. Consider changing your bedding to a material that wicks moisture away and can handle frequent laundering. Keep in mind that night sweats are not just for moms; people of all ages – about three percent of the population – experience it due to medication, diabetes, or, for women, menopause.

Finally, if you’re eating well and have a comfortable surface to rest on at night, you may have to concede that the problem is your bed partner. Snoring and tossing and turning from the other side of the bed isn’t pleasant. And as much as you may not want to, there is no shame in separating bedrooms temporarily. This applies not only to husbands but to kids and pets as well. You can always try sleeping in earplugs or with a sound machine if noise is the only issue.

Remember, sleep isn’t a luxury – at least it should not be. Getting eight hours on most nights is one of the best ways to improve your mood and your health overall. It is not always easy when you have a growing family, but making a few changes, such as eating well and utilizing a mattress that fits your sleep style, is a good start.
