The CTA Foundation worked hard all year to continue making the world more accessible and welcoming to older adults and people with disabilities.

In 2023, the Foundation awarded grants to 17 nonprofits and universities to support their efforts to solve accessibility and aging challenges. We were also able to add a new roundtable, hosted in Washington, DC during National Disability Employment month to advance the conversation on accessible employment. All of this work is thanks to the generosity of individual donors like you, and industry sponsors.

With just a few minutes of your time, you can, make your donation securely online so our work can continue into 2024.

Your gift will join the collective generosity of all our donors to ensure 2024 sees continued gains in making this world more accessible for all. In addition to our existing programs, the Foundation plans to expand our efforts next year to include a Hackathon targeting accessible solutions for digital healthcare, and a unique partnership to deliver connection to at-risk senior communities using virtual reality. We can’t do any of this without you.

I hope you will consider being a partner in our work once again. We have several options for giving, including the ability to give tribute gifts, or break your giving into bite-sized chunks through our Capacitor Society.

Happy New Year,

Stephen Ewell
Executive Director, CTA Foundation
Can I interest you in a story that’s sure to be “hot stuff” on Staten Island – a new, very special local farm where 22 Staten Islanders with developmental disabilities will grow peppers for hot sauce, and other produce …and all with a purpose.

https://smilefarms.org/

Smile Farms at CP Unlimited will host its ribbon cutting ceremony, opening the 9th Smile Farms campus in the New York City metro region.
Smile Farms is a not-for-profit that develops partnerships with other NFPs to create jobs for people with developmental disabilities. Smile Farms at CP Unlimited will create 22 such opportunities for Staten Islanders, teaching them to grow produce (hot and sweet peppers to be used to make hot sauce!, among other things), providing them with marketable skills, independence, and mental wellness benefits. They will also support “Good Neighbor Organics” grown nearby and distribute it in local SI neighborhoods identified as “food deserts.” Smile Farms was founded by Long Islander and 1-800-FLOWERS.com Founder/Executive Chairman Jim McCann, inspired by his brother who has developmental disabilities.
Fun Facts: Since its founding in 2015, Smile Farms has:
– employed more than 200+ people with different abilities in the NY metro area
– harvested 629+ lbs. of peppers (and counting!) that have been made into 1,773 bottles of “BurnAbility” hot sauce ??????
– delivered produce to nearly 600 food insecure customers
– farmed produce for 55 group homes, feeding 400 residents
– wholesaled 62,000 planted pots of annuals and perennials
– provided produce for celeb Chef Tom Colicchio’s newest restaurant, Small Batch, and much more.
This is SUCH a feel-good story. If you’d like to interview James Cuomo, (a Smile Farmer at CP Unlimited), Jim McCann (Founder/Chairman Smile Farms, Founder/Exec Chairman of 1-800-Flowers) or Susan Constantino, (President and CEO of CP Unlimited), I’d be glad to arrange it for you. I’ve attached a media advisory for you and a flyer about Smile Farms.

Jim McCann – Bio

As a child, McCann grew up in Ozone Park, Queens, and is the oldest of five siblings in an Irish-American family; McCann is a third-generation American.[1][2] For college, McCann attended the John Jay College of Criminal Justice in Manhattan, and graduated in 1974 with a bachelor’s degree in psychology.[1]

McCann first entered the flower business in the 1970s, when he purchased flower shops in New York City.[1][3] He had previously worked as a social worker and as a part-time bartender in the Queens and Manhattan, respectively.[1][4]

According to his autobiography, “Stop and Sell the Roses”, he came up with the idea of building a nationwide flower service while “listening to the radio as he was shaving”. In 1986, he bought a nearly bankrupt company in Texas which owned the phone number 1-800-Flowers.[3] McCann changed the name of his chain accordingly.

In 1992 and 1994, McCann established deals with online pioneers CompuServe and AOL, making his company one of the first retailers to establish an online presence.[3] In 1995, McCann established the website www.1800flowers.com, becoming one of the first retailers to establish a web presence. The company went public when it filed its IPO in 1999 under stock ticker FLWS.[1][5][6]

As of 2016, McCann stepped down as Chief Executive Officer of 1-800-Flowers in favor of his brother Christopher G. McCann.[1] McCann owns 40% of the company.

McCann serves as a director for Winthrop-University Hospital, a trustee for Hofstra University, a trustee for the Cancer Research Institute, Inc. and Children’s Progress Inc.[6][7] He is often sought after to speak on topics of entrepreneurship, marketing and the Internet. He also serves on various corporate boards.[6]

Lila is wheelchair bound and skates through technology assisted braces. In real life Lila, was one of the series’ first readers and was introduced to the author by Errin Hakstol, wife of NHL Assistant Coach, Dave Hakstol.
More than 15 NHL superstars have endorsed the book series.

“Lila truly has a million-dollar smile,” says Jones, “and I call her the queen of grit and determination.”

The book has three other characters with special needs (Down syndrome, autism and sled hockey) and continues the series traditions of competitive play, joys of winning, lessons of losing and sportsmanship. At the end of the fifth book the children decide to start a community spirit award for inspiring kids making a difference, impact or sharing good will.

What Others Are Saying

“Work hard. Play hard. Keep getting better every day!” – Jack and Leslie Jablonski, Bel13ve Foundation

“I loved it! Hockey really is for everyone!” – Lila, Inspiration for ‘Lila’ character

“All our kids love these books! They really teach valuable lessons for life that go way beyond the game.” – Jordan and Jamie Leopold, American former professional ice hockey defenseman and community volunteers.

“I love the way this book celebrates individual differences, strengths and similarities. When children learn about themselves, others and the world around them, that is the ultimate hat trick.” – Aimee Jordan, Lila’s mom and fierce advocate for people with disabilities.

“It’s really cool to see my name as a character in a book, especially a children’s book. I hope it helps other kids to be inspired to think, create, and invent. It’s neat to think my name might motivate readers to get out there and do things and dream big like I did because I know what it’s like to be one of them.” – Tripp Phillips, President and Inventor, Le-Glue

“I grew up as the typical Minnesota kid. Hockey is my life. These books are a hat trick!” – Luke Delzer, Totino-Grace High School Varsity

Real Estate developers and philanthropists Don and Katrina Peebles, and their daughter Chloe, a competitive junior equestrian on the First Blue Show Circuit, saddled up with Rolls-Royce, Goldman Sachs and Georgina Bloomberg raising nearly $50,000 to benefit Give Back for Special Equestrians at a Bridgehampton benefit in support of children and veterans with disabilities. The summer soiree was held at the stunning Peebles’ estate against an opulent backdrop of serenading Juilliard School violinists and 2018 Rolls-Royce Motor Cars. A lively mix of celebrities, elite equestrians, local Hampton residents, and business executives celebrated the power of horsemanship and the unique ability horses have in healing the mind, body and spirit.

Notable attendees included: Don Peebles, Katrina Peebles, Chloe Peebles, Donahue Peebles III, Georgina Bloomberg, Sissy De Maria-Koehne, Dr. Heather Kuhl, Isabel Ernst, Ramona Singer, Nicole Cicogna, Jukai Sugarman, Tomoko Sawamura, Isabel Ernst, Dr. Heather Kuhl, Virginia Terry, Shana Kaufman, Lauren Marcus, Colin Harrison, Sarah Bray, Lynn Scotti, Dr. Guenther Koehne, Grant Kennedy, Michael Snell, Mary Kong, Lauren Reischer Sol Reischer, Libby Karmely, Shahab Karmely, Jan Juran, Bernard Lackner, Anetta Nowosielska, Joe Farrell, Chris Reardon and Paul Iritani.

The lovely evening took place on the Peebles lawn surrounded by a beautiful garden landscape. Distinguished guests mingled under the illuminated tent enjoying wine and spirits provided by event sponsor Black Stallion Winery. Greeting his guests, real estate developer, author and family man Don Peebles expressed his gratitude and what it meant to his family to be a part of the virtuous cause.

Don Peebles spoke highly of his daughter’s motivation to support Give Back for Special Equestrians. He introduces Chloe by saying, “I am so incredibly proud of you for not only your accomplishments as a competitive equestrian, but in your compassion for others and your desire to share your lifelong love of horses through your involvement with this charitable organization.”

Chloe Peebles, who has maintained a successful 14-year equestrian career, followed suit in thanking her parents and guests for joining in support of Give Back for Special Equestrians. She says, “Give Back for Special Equestrians is changing the lives of so many and to be able to support such a wonderful cause within the equestrian community has always been a dream of mine. For 14 years, especially during these past teenage years, I have come to realize and appreciate how impactful the relationship with horses and the equestrian culture can be.” Eloquently, Chloe expressed her passion for horseback riding and her fondness of the majestic animal, further describing the pivotal role the sport has played in her life. Chloe also thanked First Blue Stables, who helped sponsor the event, for all the training and support over the years. Her heartfelt words brought smiles to the faces of attendees and warmed the spirits of donors prepared to give back.

CEO and founder Sissy DeMaria-Koehne, alongside co-founders Dr. Heather Kuhl and Isabel Ernst, started the all-volunteer organization Give Back for Special Equestrians on a mission to raise funds to provide therapeutic horseback riding and equine-assisted scholarships for children and veterans with Autism, Spina Bifida, Paralysis and Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder among other disabilities. Sharing a passion for horses, they wanted to bring the joys of horsemanship, in addition to the life-changing benefits of equine therapy, to those facing some of life’s most difficult challenges. The transformative benefits of equine therapy help people with disabilities improve balance, posture, hand-eye coordination, as well as self-esteem, self-confidence and self-control.

“Thanks to the benevolence of our title sponsor, Don, Katrina and Chloe Peebles of The Peebles Corporation, Rolls-Royce and all of our generous supporting sponsors, we are able to pay forward our mutual joy for horses and horsemanship to offer more children and veterans living with mental, cognitive or emotional disabilities direct access to ‘horsepower’ that heals,” said Sissy DeMaria-Koehne.

As part of the evening’s festivities, Rolls-Royce Motor Cars presented a $5,000 donation to Give Back for Special Equestrian, supporting The Peebles Corporation’s and Give Back for Special Equestrians’ $30,000 donation to New York City therapeutic stable partner, GallopNYC. Accepting the donation, Executive Director Nicole Cicogna of GallopNYC was joined by accomplished equestrian Jukai Sugarman and her mother Tomoko Sawamura, who is also a volunteer of the nonprofit organization. The support of the generous contributions made by the Peebles Corporation and charity partner Give Back for Special Equestrians will provide therapeutic riding programs for children and adults with disabilities.

Philanthropist Katrina Peebles presented the opportunity to give back as a combined effort to provide at least 25 annual riding scholarships to riders like Jukai. One-by-one, donors raised their hands compelled to support Give Back for Special Equestrians. Guests also enjoyed a lively auction of a round-trip flight from Manhattan to the Hamptons on Blade aviation, an event sponsor. Another lucky winner received a three-night stay at Rosemary’s Cottage exquisite vacation cottage filled with historic, old-world charm and modern comfort donated by The Fisher Island Club in Miami. The event was catered by Shiraz, one of New York’s premier event companies, providing decadent hors d’oeuvres throughout the elegant evening.

Sponsors included title sponsor The Peebles Corporation, as well as supporting sponsors Rolls-Royce, Goldman Sachs, VistaJet, Fisher Island Club, Hamptons Magazine, KAR Properties, 2000 Ocean, One River Point, First Blue Stables, Alexis, Blade and Black Stallion Winery.

National Meningitis Association

NMA works to protect families from the devastating effects of meningococcal disease by educating the public, medical professionals and others about the disease and vaccines available to prevent it. NMA was formed in 2002 by parents whose children died or live with permanent disabilities from meningococcal disease. Like many families, NMA’s founders were unaware that meningococcal disease vaccination could have prevented their anguish. Since NMA was founded, great strides have been made in meningitis prevention. NMA has supported the creation of broad recommendations for meningococcal vaccines to protect all preteens and teens, worked to advocate for state vaccination requirements, and helped increase awareness and vaccine uptake. The organization also provides emotional support for individuals and families who have experienced meningococcal disease.

To accomplish its goals, NMA develops programs and resources that reach audiences on national and grassroots levels. Parents, disease survivors and other family members help carry out NMA’s mission by conducting community awareness activities across the country through two key programs: Moms on Meningitis (M.O.M.s) and Together Educating About Meningitis (T.E.A.M.). For disease and prevention information, downloadable resources and personal stories from M.O.M.s and T.E.A.M. members, please visit nmaus.org.

OUR MISSION
ReelAbilities Film Festival is the largest festival in the US dedicated to promoting awareness and appreciation of the lives, stories and artistic expressions of people with different disabilities.
Initiated in NY in 2007, the festival presents award winning films by and about people with disabilities in multiple locations throughout each hosting city. Post-screening discussions and other engaging programs bring together the community to explore, discuss, embrace, and celebrate the diversity of our shared human experience.

ABOUT US
ReelAbilities Film Festival
ReelAbilities Film Festival was initiated in New York at the JCC Manhattan in 2007, founded by Anita Altman and Isaac Zablocki. The festival was the first of its kind to present a series of award-winning films by, about and for people with disabilities. As the festival progressed, screenings continued to take place at multiple venues across the city and all films are followed by discussions that engage the community in promoting inclusion and celebrating diversity, while providing accessible conditions to match the different needs of our multi-layered society.

ReelAbilities North American Program
In 2012, other cities across the US followed New York’s footsteps by hosting a ReelAbilities Film Festival, starting at Cincinnati, Ohio. Since then, Reelabilities events have been held in over a dozen cities in North America. ReelAbilities events have expanded from the US to Canada and soon – Latin America, and take place in many different forms – film festivals, year round screenings and special programming that goes beyond film. Since its start, ReelAbilities has been consistently receiving an increasing number of outstanding film submissions from across the globe.
The ReelAbilities North America headquarters has recently moved back to the Marlene Meyerson JCC Manhattan in NYC.
